S. Smith's reaction is CLASSIC :) And I LOVE when the audience goes "OOOOoooooh" when they get the 4th square--everyone knew at that precise moment that Shelley had enough time to take him to the top!
$100,000 was a lot of money back then. Still is today, but it's value has been dropped since the million-dollar game shows came around in the late 90's. It was serious and huge situation for the contestant. These types of situations still are huge and serious. We're talking life-changing for the potential winner. You still hear this asking for the audience to be quiet during the final spin and bonus rounds on Wheel of Fortune to this day.
Man, I love it at 1:08. Shelley jumps up and down while the John Oates lookalike stands there in shock for a few seconds, not realizing he seriously won that $100,000. It's just priceless!
This was thrilling to watch, as someone else said here, but it was even more thrilling back when it first aired because this final lasted TWO WEEKS before someone could win the $100K. It was incredible stuff.
An amazing video. I, too, was wondering at first how "curved, wet wood" could have been a valid clue for the "Things That Are Warped" subject. I looked in the dictionary and "curved" doesn't seem to be a synonym for "warped" or vice versa. He won the $100,000 anyway. Congrats to the guy!
The name of the 5th contestant was Denise Bumbliss. Im actually, going to try to find a way to post a profile on the site. I also have an old episode on tape of the 11th $100000 win from Tracy Trench. I would like to see this show come back. I personally did not like the Donny Osmond version, and if it does come back, it will have to be close to the original way. Same concept to qualify for the tournament.
He was on the episode where Ann whammied on one spin and threw a fit. She was on the old '84 intros. $100,000 seems a lot harder to win nowadays no thanks to shows like Deal or No Deal, though. It seemed like in the '80s, the $100K was always up for grabs on Pyramid. Darn good times. :0)
Well Dick Clark may not be hosting Game Shows anymore, but he's still working off camera as a producer sometimes and also, his longtime friend Ed McMahon may be up in age, too, but he's still doing commercials and as for Casey Kasem, he is still going strong on TV and Radio and so is William Shatner and Robert Vaughn from Man From U.N.C.L.E. is also going strong as well and so is Wink Martindale. Clark, Ed, Casey, Shatner and Robert Vaughn and the Winker TRUE TV Legends and that's a fact.
If I'm not mistaken, Richard's PYL win was the very first PYL episode that aired on Game Show Network when they first acquired the rights 5 years ago. It's also interesting to note that Richard's wife (who can be seen toward the end of the clip) won $25,000 on "The New $25,000 Pyramid" a few years earlier. Richard and son Brian can be seen coming on stage to celebrate that win. So the entire Mahaffey family has won almost $150,000.
Mr. McMahon died a month or two ago. He'll always be remembered for two things: Dick Clark's sidekick on "Tv Bloopers and Practical Jokes," and "Heeeeerrrrreeee's JOHNNY!"
I thought she had said "Earths wet wood" but I can be wrong; I just found this site yesterday (8/21/06) because I was looking for old pyramid clips. I use to watch reruns of pyramid alot. Shelly also helped a contestent win the 5th tournament after winning $5000 in a 21-21 tie. If I was in the tournament I would want her to be in the winners circle with me
Hello, I have read that the reason why the entire audience rushes out of their seats is that they wanted "camera time", or that they just wanted to congratulate the contestant in case his or her relatives could not make it in person. Whatever the reason, it never bothered me any; I just thought it was to make such a win more exciting than a $10,000 or $25,000 win.
Dick Clark was and always WILL be "Pyramid" as far as I'm concerned. The only emcee that came close was Bill Cullen, and sadly, I never watched much of his version of the show. It sure is sad that Dick can no longer host game shows again - he was one of the best!
Well I doubt the judges had Word for DOS as their reference. However, Microsoft's MSN Encarta lists warped as a synonym of curved. I'm glad the guy won, but I still think there should have been a BUZZ!
I NEVER understood why the audience clapped each time they guessed one of the doors correctly -- destracting to the players as well as it could cover up the first clue for the next door.
Things that are WARPED? An ALBUM that was in the HOT SUN. (That happened to me) My mom bought an album to her class (When she was a teacher), but left it in her HOT CAR, (accidentally) and My album WARPED I CRIED like a baby!! (This was OBVIOUSLY YEARS AGO).
You always remember the FIRST! Also, I believe the Winning bells sounded longer for this win then any, listen carefully and you may know what I mean! In addition, the graphic never stopped flashing!
To add, not only do I think curved is a synonym, but I think "curved wet wood" would have fit under the too discriptive rule. I'm not saying this to be mean, but IMO it would only be fair to the other contestants competing.
Man, Ms. Cluegiver should have gotten buzzed TWICED, once for her "Crazy Mind" which would be a synonym of "Warped" in that instance, and then for "Curly Wood", another synonym for "Warped". In later eps, the judges were very strict about this, in this one they were asleep :p
Of course I do, but I feel that the joke is getting a little bit out of hand. Let's put the joke to rest, and disregard anyone who tries to continue it (about mistaking Richard Mahaffey for John Oates). -Matt
I told you the truth! I'm right. If John Oates were on this show, he would have been a celebrity player helping a contestant--NOT a contestant winning in the winner's circle!!! Please stop this mistaken identity for once.
Very good! Here's one for you: Old men Young Men Preachers saying Amen Taking a collection Playing on a bass drum How come the city never sleeps at night?? A Nancy Sinatra song from 1966, titled The City Never Sleeps at Night.
Actually police agencies are enfored. The FBI is enforced by the Justice Department to make sure they're in line. State police agencies are enforced by their respective state, but I would have buzzed them for curved wet wood.
You know... it's people like you is why I stopped taking comments on a couple of my other clips... if you have something bad to say or JUDGE someone, then keep your fucking trap shut... otherwise, watch the damn video and enjoy.

Congrats to John Oates (Hall & Oates) on his big win.
That was thrilling to watch! Very exciting! I was on the edge of my seat! Mr. Clark is Mr. Pyramid, no one else.
For some reason I could only think of "mustache" for every clue.
I also remember Richard Mahaffey being one of the first two contestants when "The $100,000 Pyramid" debuted in syndication in Sept. of 1985.
The name of the 5th contestant was Denise Bumbliss. Im actually, going to try to find a way to post a profile on the site. looks like Kim Carnes and John Oats

That is Shelley Smith
I love the guy's mustache! LMAO!
And after he wins, half the audience comes up to congratulate him.
A family also picked up Richard Dawson on "Family Feud" one time.
At the time, Shelley Smith was a co-star of ABC's short-lived sitcom, "THE ASSOCIATES" (1979-'80).
man its so nice 2 see someone WIN wath a TRIP
THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY BACK THEN!!!
@ProfMike789 They aren't synonyms. A curved hockey stick blade, for instance, isn't warped, since it was manufactured that way.
Three seconds left wow.
Hello,

Whatever the reason, it never bothered me any; I just thought it was to make such a win more exciting than a $10,000 or $25,000 win.
@2themoon Actually, I think it would've been buzzed because of the prepositional phrase rule (you can't use them in the bonus round).
Dick Clark was and always WILL be "Pyramid" as far as I'm concerned. The only emcee that came close was Bill Cullen, and sadly, I never watched much of his version of the show. It sure is sad that Dick can no longer host game shows again - he was one of the best!
Lucky to get away with "curved wood", judge must have been hovering over the buzzer on that one.
i looooooooooooove this
I love Dick Clark's comment at the beginning. It sounds like he's got a gun and is robbing the set of the $100,000 Pyramid.
They used that San Francisco category in the 4th win posted here too, in the $100 spot
Well I doubt the judges had Word for DOS as their reference. However, Microsoft's MSN Encarta lists warped as a synonym of curved. I'm glad the guy won, but I still think there should have been a BUZZ!
The goofy judge needs to lay off the bell... DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING DING Okay we get it- he won.
mullet stampede , pmsl
@ 0:38 someone's DEMENTED MIND @ 1:15, GREAT, CONGRAT'S (is that guy Darryl Hall (or John Oates) Hall & Oates? It kind of looks like ONE of them
That question was already answered. The celebrity is Shelley Smith.
RIP Dick Clark
I NEVER understood why the audience clapped each time they guessed one of the doors correctly -- destracting to the players as well as it could cover up the first clue for the next door.
Dick's kind of mean.
NOBODY MOVE. :)
You gotta love this show.
with that blonde hair on one side and moustache on the other, I thought that was Hall and Oates
Things that are warped was a COMPLICATED clue 2 describe!
lordy what is that a toupe?! geez....at least he won the money!!! :)
anybody happen to know what the shortest amount of time (in terms of days) a tournament lasted before the $100,000 was won?
Because she had used these clues previously.
thought for SURE he wouldn't get the "Warped" one
I think the reason why that this was the first tournament and Dick probably didn't know how the audience would be.
adjectives are fine. The wood of a curved/wet tree would not be; because that would be a prepositional phrase.
You always remember the FIRST! Also, I believe the Winning bells sounded longer for this win then any, listen carefully and you may know what I mean! In addition, the graphic never stopped flashing!
I would have thought "curved wet wood" would have disqualified them. They were lucky! "Pass it!" usually means they're not going to win.
Timing and scoring says 57"745 (02"255 remaining)
I thought the same exact thing. I guess once they give it they'd look like creeps taking it back....
I'm surprised with the way they are on clues they didn't buzz them on the curved wet wood clue!
I honestly think it was encouraged by the producers of the show, just to get ratings? Just my opinion.
Old (or heated) records.
Well....the audience moved...they clapped after every correct response.....
To add, not only do I think curved is a synonym, but I think "curved wet wood" would have fit under the too discriptive rule. I'm not saying this to be mean, but IMO it would only be fair to the other contestants competing.
Time. Time Warped. I might have gotten that one quickly.
just wondering how could "Curved, Wet, Wood" have been a legal clue?
He was completely credulous
It's awful nice to see John Oates win the big money. This is one time that pesky Daryl Hall won't upstage him!!!!
@nextbarker Naw well nowadays. The best clue would be a Level-skipping Mario.
I dunno. Cheaper than confetti I guess :).
I believe it would have been acceptable.
Man, Ms. Cluegiver should have gotten buzzed TWICED, once for her "Crazy Mind" which would be a synonym of "Warped" in that instance, and then for "Curly Wood", another synonym for "Warped". In later eps, the judges were very strict about this, in this one they were asleep :p
Did those contesters know each other?
What is on this guy's head? It just growled at me!
Would "a sense of humor" been buzzed down as descriptive or allowed as part of a list?
@ThirdOfJune4444 why doesnt Dick Clark do the pyramid anymore he is so good at it
Nice to see John Oates win that $100 K. Suck it, Hall!
Of course I do, but I feel that the joke is getting a little bit out of hand. Let's put the joke to rest, and disregard anyone who tries to continue it (about mistaking Richard Mahaffey for John Oates).
-Matt
@Singingboy1978
A demented person's mind.
Oh, lighten up, for crying out loud....
I told you the truth! I'm right. If John Oates were on this show, he would have been a celebrity player helping a contestant--NOT a contestant winning in the winner's circle!!! Please stop this mistaken identity for once.

You mean Mr. Osmond isn't great?
LOL. $25K & $100K Pyramid aren't SHIT without the DC presiding.
Actually police agencies are enfored. The FBI is enforced by the Justice Department to make sure they're in line. State police agencies are enforced by their respective state, but I would have buzzed them for curved wet wood.
That was not John Oates. His name was Richard Mahaffey; but he did look almost identical to John Oates, though.
You know... it's people like you is why I stopped taking comments on a couple of my other clips... if you have something bad to say or JUDGE someone, then keep your fucking trap shut... otherwise, watch the damn video and enjoy.
LOL!!
That guy was not John Oates; his name is Richard Mahaffey. Please don't confuse him with John Oates.
Please don't confuse John Oates with this guy who won the $100,000!
Do you not understand joking around or sarcasm?
NOBODY MOVE!! LOL---- yikes...
