In fact, that was the general idea of LD working in conjunction with other systems as well (including arcade LD-based games).

Well, that sound is the game program which is encoded and loaded through the tape input (as usual back in the 80s).
It made sense that they put it there for the computer to display the game right.
Most computer's often relied on that including modems for early internet apps like Compuserve or BBS.
