This is the first episode in this build series and the longest one I have ever uploaded. There is a lot of work that goes into the hull to get it to the point where you can put some paint on it. That's what this video is all about. Future videos should be much shorter.
To see how to make serious corrections to the hull in order to get the most "accurate" build possible, check out Nigel's Modeling Bench here on UA-cam. But be warned, he is conducting VERY advanced modifications to the hull. His techniques may not be suitable for beginners. But definitely go give his channel a "LIKE" and "SUBSCRIBE". He does amazing work.

I was listening to music and then stumbled upon the two of you....I love creating and working with models (I am in the middle of handcrafting a double-hulled Hawaiian voyaging canoe...48" outriggers bow to stern....milled and carved the wood) and appreciate the challenge of working from scratch. I will be watching this project you are working on...it looks to be a real beauty! Thank you for your service (me....tour of duty Viet Nam 1967-1968 USARV). Best wishes to both of you.

First of all, I want to say thank you for your service. I was in the Marine Corps for 8 years. Actually this T-Shirt is perfect for me, because I was a 0341 I was in Mortars. I was a Mortarman. And yes I did call for fire. Perfect. I will be getting one, also to help other vets. Actually that is more important to me than anything else is to help other vets. Just make sure you get ALL of your V.A benefits ok. Ya'll take care.

you are one of the people i admire on this hobby , researching everything to the last detail, making corrections on the kit, adding all sorts of missing stuff etc. I doubt I'd have such patience, i much prefer to just build the kit straight away, so kudos to you sir

Thanks Mike! I honestly don’t do that “much” research. I benefit a lot from others who I consider subject matter experts. And yes, I too enjoy building a model straight out of the box after any big in-depth project. That’s why I have my little Ban Dai Star Wars kits sitting off to the side when I need a quit and easy break.

Aircraft Maintainer for 35 years! Air Force! I loved everyday of it! I retired last April. I worked A-7's way back in the late 80's and the rest of my career from about 1991 was F-16's! It was such a wonderful career! Contrary to the t shirt I don't want my "MRE". :) I know this video is 2 years old, (How did you know I would be watching this two years later? ) :) but somthign that might be fun is artists doing paintings to hang on the walls of the build. Not sure what teh scale size of that would be and perhaps that is crazy I don't know. :)

Very first episode and we get an 80 minute video; hope this is a sign of things to come.👍😁
I'm only about 12 minutes in and I can't say Im all that impressed with the kit. Going by the flaws on the hull pieces, probably considered the two most important parts of the kit, it looks like you're going to be spending a lot of time fixing 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠 - not a great start.
And 80 minutes just flew by. Loads of progress, probably because you've got help this time.😁
The "paint a passenger" scheme is genius, I wonder how many you'll get. My painting skills, or lack of, rule me out of helping but it should be a whole lot of fun, seeing what, or who, everyone sends in. I'm really looking forward to this build, especially as it's a passenger vessel, rather than a warship.
Herself should have no trouble finding "Tales from the Titanic" for each episode; there's just 𝒔𝒐 much written about the ship, her passengers and the crew.
    Cheers for now,
    Dougie.

Yeah she has the Maker. It WILL cut all the way through the styrene, but it was going to be a bunch of trial and error to pick the best setting for that. Since we were already cutting 3/4 of the way through, that was more than good enough for what we needed.

  • @JeffreyStrader

Instead of using flexible, breakable drill bits, try using Milling Machine Bits. They are much, much stronger!

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  3 роки тому +1

That's a good idea, but I'm not sure they make them small enough for the size she broke. Its rare that I even use bits that big on these models. Usually they are much much smaller.

First of all I'd like to thank you for your service in the armed forces, I myself had 5 uncles who served, 2 in WWII, 2 in Korea and a married in uncle who served in Vietnam. I myself have not served, I guess I was lucky to have been born in "58" so I wz too young for Nam & to old for Desert Storm, but never did I let my age hinder my respect for my uncles or any American Veteran who has served, and to express my respect for them, I wrote poetry for our troops back in 08 & 09 and sent 2000 booklets of poetry to Iraq & Afghanistan through care packs for our troops. With that said I too Im building the 1/200 Titanic and was wondering what exactly are the drill sizes for the portholes in the hull of this titanic model? You also mentioned that the stern is missing 4 portholes, I believe if you look again you'll see 2 more missing one on each side of where it says: Titanic liverpool. Anyway guys if you said the sizes I must have missed it, but that's what I'd like to know : ) otherwise I'll watch it again to be sure. Some of my poem titles are as follows: Soldier's Tale, Infidel sniper, casualties for freedom, forever vigilant, ghillie suit, soldier's prayer Pride and Glory, and Memorial Day blessing. Anyway you 2 I'll be watching. 😜👍👍

Thanks, Jack! I appreciate the comment. So I mention that you should measure your holes careful before drilling out the holes. But the common sizes that should get you close are 1mm, 2mm, and 2.5mm. Then things get bigger and off the top of my head I don’t remember. Just use a set of calipers or place the end of the drill bits in the port holes to see what matches. And yes, I mentioned and showed how to lay out the two missing port holes in the stern. I drilled those out, too. It makes the model look a lot better.

@@TheMidwestModelShop for sure on the missing portholes, and I do have a set of calipers too. I did manage to drill out most of the 1st set of holes that mostly lay central upon the hull at .070 then c/sunk them a little on the inside of the hull using a .125 drill all holes I did with a pin vise took me forever but I still have all eternity to finish before paint, then my palette will be set, I saw your video on the stern plates and tried to order them from scale the titanic, but that site closed its doors indefinitely, I really was hoping for them.
The good thing is I have plenty to do and hopefully someone else will take over for them by then. Anyway thanks a million for your help. 😜👍✌

What you guys s are doing looks great. I believe the art of kit modelling is to improve on the "out of the box", which will always be flawed, to the highest standard you can.

I was considering this but after watching some of nigels modifications I thought against it. I’ll watch your build and see what it’s like. Might jump in.

I totally respect that. If your mind is set on KNOWING the model is super super accurate.... then yeah, unless you’re willing to make Nigels modifications, you should pass. But if you just like the titanic and can handle something that you know is pretty close to accurate, then give it a go! It’s still the most accurate representation out there.

Hi, I am getting to grips with Nigel's hull mods which if done really carefully work really nicely. I have started as he suggested and made a good start on the hull shaping at the stern. I am having working props too so that was an added interesting time! It's mainly the hull being too square that I found annoying. It is though very time consuming. Having all the scale the Titanic PE sheets too I wanted to get the thing as accurate as possible. I have already spent three times the cost of the basic kit on this project....so far!!!!! The KA upscale kit is excellent :-)

@@johnnyhollis9977 I think that those who finish her the way Nigel is demonstrating will be really pleased. I would love to see a side by side of a standard kit hull, and one modified to be the correct shape.
