Mind you, never ran into an issue myself with anything like that. Granted, I usually deployed severely large fleets by the endgame, so it may have been harder for me to notice :P I still found fighters useful in enough numbers...it's been years, but the number 37,000 comes to mind ^^ This was one of the most remarkable RTS games of all time, though...space battle, ground battle, city-building, and exploration. None of it super-complex, but not overly simplified either.
Sorry for late comment. Yes, at that number of Heavy Fighter (the highest tier fighter) maybe useful, but it's not cost efficient compare to cap ship. I just checked the stats. 1 Battleship cost 300k on average, while 5 Heavy Fighters cost 12k, which mean for a cost of 1 BB you get 125 HF. But that number of HF certainly can't deplete BB's Shield, let alone killing it! I and my brother tried 500 HF vs 1 BB in multiplayer once, can only depleted Half of BB's Shield before all Heavy Fighters die.
But then again, broken equipment is mitigated by the fact that you can train spies to steal it from enemy, or just flat out incite revolt on their colonies, so I think it's not that bad. But if said enemy is Kra' Hen, well... good luck trying to jam their capitol ship with Computer Jammer to prevent Destructor Ray from going Death Star on your fleet. At least Kra' Hen never get Combat Cloaking though, I guess it balanced out a little bit even though it still broken.
A truly great intro, but it makes absolutely no sense regarding to the campaign. I mean, there are no "rebels", no dictator (since YOU are the ruler), and the battle chatter is utterly meaningless. It's mostly Star Wars-type yammering.
TheLambdaTeam Actually it is. This is the past, that dictator guy was the first who want to find the crystal of the gods(or something like that), which is the key element in the story. I think that (here come the SPOILER!!!) -----if you win the campaign with diplomatic victory, the Shinari let loose the guy from the freezer, initiating a bloody civil war amongst the humans----, you can see that in the end video.
the end of the solarian fed have the option of recover the four cristal and unfreeze the dictator and end the campaign with a civil war, the same in the aliance ending of the shinari
I wish these cinematics would work on Windows 7. Intro videos and such play correctly, but when I start Solarian Campaign, it jams at loading screen. You can still hear video sound, but there just reads "loading". Everything else works perfectly on Windows 7, but videos are blank.
6 years late, but believe it or not, the original CD version of this game works fine on Windows 10 64 bits (!) The only thing you need is to apply unofficial patch 1.14 , which despite released decade earlier to fix the issue this game has on Windows NT, it also (accidentally) make the game runs on Windows 10 64 bits. You have to simply set the admin rights and Windows 98 compatibility. The cinematic also run properly when you run this game on Windows 10 too.
This game isn't all that, the AI tends to rush all the time, so if you have even a single fighter more then you.....war gets declared. The only time the AI made peace with me is when i had a fleet so large it would block the view of the Deathstar from Starwars.
This game has few flaws, particularly broken equipments on your capital ships. Ship Manipulator and Destructor Ray are the biggest offender as it let your fleet defeat enemy many times its strength easily, combined with Combat Cloaking and they'll unable to find you before those weapon finish charging. And Fighters in this game is useless once you got Cruiser as even thousands of these can't even scratch them. But even with these flaws, the game still enjoyable, more than some games I played.
@Deterdalek2 I know that I was just beeing geeky as i am a fan of BSG i know the game has nothing to do with the show. Just miss the game as its awesome.
love the music as the fighters fly over the city
anyone know where the track can be found?
"We lost a corvette, lets prepare for landing" No fks given.
i swear.. of all space games, this remains the pnly one that is genuinely fun. and then i can safely say i tried ALL space games. :)
The only minus of this game is lack of infantry during ground battles.
This game had great movies. I always liked this one best because of the naked man.
I get starship troopers and babylon 5 vibes

Loved this game, it was one of my 2 first PC games along with Age of Empires 2 !
The dialogue for the space battle leaves something to be desired, but it's still pretty cool
Epically epic ! :)
