OK so I know this might not be something that every camper ponders but this was in fact very informative and helpful! I recently had the same dilemma, I wanted something small and practical I could carry some simple spices in so I started the quest as well. I eventually went with the same thing, the MSR Salt and Pepper shaker! It's great, loved it, one small issue was that the holes were too small for some of the other spices I wanted to bring. I love Roasted Garlic and Red Pepper blend of spice, I put that schit on everything. But the holes were way too small. Here is where this video helped! I did not know they also made the "Spice" shaker with bigger holes! OK So I ordered it, have not gotten it yet so I can't testify that it will be good for my particular spice but judging from this video, it looks promising, at least better than any other option I have found.
Thank you Milo for a great video, I have subscribed to your channel!
Ohhhh I hope the single shakers work well for you!! Happy camp cooking to you Andrew and thank you so much for sharing your story. Glad you enjoyed the video ☺️
Great looking shakers, but I just find a small container that holds salt and pepper sachets that you can 'liberate' from fast food restaurants works just as well.
I do appreciate a great fast food liberation moment. I can respect the heck out of that, Chris.
I have them with me out there too, but feel guilty for the single use trash. Plus 1 for the MSR shaker, happy with it.
Loved the video. Ummm… I may have just ordered a set of shakers to go in my camp kit. They’ll go nice with my Snow Peak cutlery, spatula, and mug.
About time you got some variety in your gear load out, Bryan. Pshh, we can't expect Snow Peak to carry all the weight.😉
Great detailed, thorough, review. Always appreciate these thorough reviews before making purchases. Thanks Milo!
Thank you Jake! I’m so glad you enjoy the reviews and happy they help you make a new purchase with confidence!
Thanks for the videos. I have been watching and enjoying them.
I wouldn't have thought there was all that much to something like a spice shaker for camping. I was just going to go with Coghlan's salt & pepper shakers off of Amazon (or Walmart if I saw them there). I will try both and see which one I like better.
Again, thanks.
Thanks for the comment, ValentineOne! Whichever one you go with, I hope that all your outdoor cooking adventures are perfectly seasoned :)
And you'll have to let me know what you end up liking the most!
I had the Coghlan shaker as well as the GSI (the worst). The Coghlan was very similar to the GSI in that the tops cracked after very little time. I then got the Outbound shaker which I liked but I lost the dam thing and when I went to get a new one, MEC was not selling them anymore and I didn't see anything there I liked so I ordered the MSR from Amazon and (see above review) I am happy with them ;)
Thank you. This was very helpful. Have a great day!
Thank you for your lovely comment and I hope that you have a great day as well!
Love the video. I always have issues with my spices and what to carry them in. I will try these. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed, Liam! I hope the spice shakers serve you well!
im a trained chef and as such i dont go without my spice blends for cooking cheapest and best version ive come up with was a DIY spice kit, using 3.75 worth of dollar tree products, a single mints tin a set of art section gliter holders perfect for spices and a paint dropper bottle set of two from art section for storing cooking oil , this kit is extremely lightweight and cheap to make you can carry up to 5 spices , a couple boulion cubes in the tin and two 4 ounce bottles of oil
It sounds like you found something that really works for you! That’s a cool idea with the art set. Thank you for sharing and happy outdoors cooking! 🥘
Excellent topic! I am into the survival/camping gear, especially the micro items.
Thanks for the video!
Of course! So glad you enjoyed the video!
Can’t believe I didn’t find your channel earlier. Awesome production quality! and oddly calming 😂 Keep it up!!
So glad you enjoyed, Samuel! It's folks like you that I'm making this stuff for! Thank you for the comment :)
Thank you Milo! I just bought the single MSR spice shaker but now I think I’ll return it for the dual… have to have my red or black pepper and salt in the back country!
Honestly both are superb. Whichever one you go with I hope you have great adventures with it!
Great video. Surprised you didn't think of the little Tupperware spice containers. They rock.
Those DO rock and that’s a great call out! I have a set for car camping and those can really take a beating!
I love these. I bought the alpine kitchen kit and ended up ditching it other than the salt and pepper shaker that came with it.
They are soooo good. Glad you found the video and thanks for the comment!
I have the Wildo spice shaker. It has 3 compartments, a very hard to remove refill lid xD, and can "leak" some spices if it's something super finely ground, but overall I like it! It has no rubber so nothing to go bad in that regard.. Aaand of course it's orange so it fits with all my other orange items
Tiger, I love that you have “other orange items”. 😂
May we all spice up our lives on the trail.
❤️
I actually wouldn't mind the 6-spice container that sells pretty much everywhere for $5-$10, depending on how poor of a shopper you are. I'd be okay with the size because I took my father's out for a test drive on my last trip to the Rockies, and it's nice to be able to handle your shaker like a shaker. But it apparently cannot be refilled. I saw a video of someone refilling one, and you basically have to run a screwdriver around the inside of the cap to pry it off. That's not going to work too many times before the lid becomes loose, spices start creeping out of the top and you have to trash the thing, but maybe the limited number of times you'll have to actually do this makes it worth it.
But I'm ALSO someone who, when thinking about it, doesn't need 6 spices. I would probably just go with seasoned salt and pepper, but I'd like to add a couple. One should probably should be regular salt, but I mostly rehydrate and there aren't many meals I eat when camping/hiking that will be ruined by my salt having garlic powder, onion powder, etc., in it. Unless there's something I'm just not thinking of, if I get another 2-spice container I might just make one spice an additional seasoned salt and the fourth BRAGG Organic Sprinkle 24 Herbs & Spices or a Mrs. Dash option for a no-salt alternative. If you haven't tried BRAGG (they make that apple cider vinegar you see all over), where original Mrs. Dash tends to smell like chicken noodle soup spices, BRAGG smells like Thanksgiving stuffing spices. OR, I can always use Lemon Pepper (seriously, it's making a comeback) in one slot, although that's more of something you use when cooking, rather than to season with AFTER cooking.
I currently have a two-spice shaker that I love (Coghlans camper salt & pepper shaker) that is no longer available. It's got much better volume than those tiny little red-capped jobbies they currently make and the lids have a nice snap to them. Plus they measure only 2.5" h x 1.5" w. I'd just get a second one if I could do it for less than the $10-$15 it's now going for on eBay (for a $1.99, small plastic tower). The multi-shakers on Amazon tend to be about 3-4" tall. Even the 6-spice jobbie is generally smaller than that. The MSR ones look to be about 3.5"-4" long and cost $9 apiece. Given how much I like the one i have, that product just seems like a bit much in multiple ways. It IS a little amazing that there aren't as many options on Amazon as a person might think. I may have to check AliExpress. I'm sure there's a knock-off or two there that might be of interest. :)
Take care.
Good thoughts! I just continue to be fascinated by how folks feel so differently on such a seemingly simple object. Some people are fine with their cardboard salt and pepper shakers, others in a zip lock bag, and some in little plastic contraptions. Interesting to see the diversity in opinions!
Happy trails!
I have that double compartment shaker, it's really neat, however, despite having grains of rice inside (to absorb moisture) the dispensing holes get dirty with spice (more with salt than pepper) and opening them with one finger becomes impossible, I often end up holding it with both hands (one hand presses the lid, so it doesn't fall off) and open it on something I have around, like a table top. It jams really, really badly. Other than that it's really great.
Ufda, I’m sorry you’re getting some humidity issues with the shaker! I feel you when it becomes a harder open. I’ve also used the table top for opening it when it gets a bit harder to open. That or you have to have a thick nail which I’ve never been brave though to open even my pop cans with a nail only. Nice perspective and thanks for the comment!
Excellent review, thank you! I ordered one of each type. 👍
Hey I’m so glad you enjoyed, DevilDog! I have no doubt these shakers are gonna shake your socks off.
Now I have spent a camping life time searching for the perfect camping spice container…. I kid you not…
Man alive there are a fortune over here….£20 for one including delivery…. I would want them to come shake the salt on my food for that..🤣🤣
The grass is always greener on the other side of the pond. And apparently they want a lot of green to get something over it. Sorry my friend. ☹️
I favor a single plastic empty spice container. Inside, I've formulated an all purpose seasoning. Think homemade creole with my own twist. Works great on meats, soups, veggies. I control the salt percentage, as opposed to buying a creole seasoning. Salt, pepper, garlic, onion, cumin, rosemary, paprika powders as a base. Cayenne as needed. I get very few comaints.
That sounds delicious!
Thanks for the break down. I agree with all of your assessments here. Your Bio says you're a crafter, so why not design the multi-spice kit everyone is looking for?
3:21 - (Himalayan/Sea) Salt, Lemon Pepper, Cinnamon, Cayenne.
Shout-out from #612
I love the cinnamon add! I forget how essential that one is especially whilst camping for morning meals!
You’re right on the nose, I am back in school earning my MS in product design so there’s a very high chance this will actually get redesigned as a fun project in the future!
I try to keep it as simple as possible.... so I bring salt, pepper, season all, garlic, onion. The msr shakers are better than the GSI ones because the latter would get hard and 1 solid piece over time.
100% John! There’s shakers have continued to give. Thanks for sharing your personal experience as well.
Great review. Thank you!
Thank you for your comment! So glad you enjoyed the video!!
Milo , Are the tops interchangeable between the single and the two divider shaker?
I just tested it to make sure and yes you can!
@@milotash thanks so much! Just purchased them both on Amazon and can’t wait to use the one that holds more of one seasoning with the two hole cap for my ghost pepper seasoning
Great review!!
Thank you for the lovely comment! ☺️
@@milotash I was debating getting this MSR shaker for awhile now and have the GSI Missile but have a few issues with it. My mind is made up now, getting the MSR.
Great review!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the comment ☺️
We use lots of Thym 🤩
You might need a whole container just for that then! ☺️
Loved the video
Thanks so much Kelomang!
I have a new spice shaker design, you willing to try out?
Hey there! Happy to take a peek - you can reach me at my email in my bio. Looking forward to it!
I'm going for Half Size Containers
Well, these are super small do depending on what you’re trying to put in them, these would be great for spice sized items
I'm bringing Miso....Overlanding
Sounds tasty and adventurous!
The best ever container is a small thick plastic bag. and you are done.
Can’t beat a baggie, Sultan. That being said, I do love the rodent proof aspect to these especially when camping in areas in my neck of the woods. Cheers!
Every bit of GSI I’ve had has failed. The MSR look really cool but the lids look like a weak point. I use Nalgene bottles and jars for everything from cleaning to cooking stuff. I’ve never had a failure or leak and they are only a couple of bucks. They’re nothing fancy just well made and tough.
The Nalgene screw tops are consistent and seem to carry their own very well, I agree. I've had a few that do the job for small instant coffee / Dandy Blend canisters that are the size of a Tic Tac box that I love. Can't complain one bit. Thanks for sharing Warwick.
