As a proud man from Huddersfield the town has a special place in my heart. It’s not our fault that the council has mis-spent millions over the past 20 years and not invested anything in the town. Now we’re starting to get trickled a bit of the HS2 money to renovate the centre. Hopefully they can keep the rents low enough to attract start up businesses to the centre as that’s the main factor in shops starting and failing. Thanks for visiting some of the sweet spots though!
The Plaza is being demolished soon, like most town centres is pretty dead compared to days gone by. But I'm born and bred and would never leave. Only London and Bath have more listed buildings than huddersfield and of course the greatest football club in the world

I was there for 4 years from 1998. It was a vibrant friendly relatively safe town. Drug gangs, knife crime and an almost intentional leveling down from the powers that be have made it a sad depressing place.

When the old market hall was demolished, there was a massive protest about it (granted, it came to nothing, but at least the council was given a roasting,) When Kirklees Council bought the piazza off Coal Pension Properties (using whose money, we ask...?) and promptly announced they were going to demolish it ... and replace it with - quote: "... an open space, where young people can gather..." rather than using the development to offer retail accommodation at reasonable rents, no one complained. Kirklees Council as an entity is too remote; people feel they have no voice, so they just take it.
I live in holmfirth, work out of Huddersfield ambulance station, so spend far too much time In the town centre due to this. In which I wouldn’t dream of going into the centre for anything if I have to now. The council have ruined it all, and unfortunately it’s spreading out from the town. Will only get worse. Used to be great, and the night life used to be banging, ghost town even on a Saturday night now.
I've lived in huddersfield all my life and I can tell you the town centre is a toilet I go to halifax of leeds to shop the council has raped/pocketed or waisted all the money owt of it. I wouldn't recommend anyone comes to huddersfied to shop there is next to nothing left.

Kirklees council, run from Huddersfield, is bankrupt but with Counsellors who would struggle to get organised enough to sweep up in a hair dressers it is unsurprising that they have lost all our money.
Sadly the town centre has gone downhill but there are plans to revive it. However, there are still some gems in the town centre. For examples the Byram Arcade with a number of great independent shops and the fantastic Arcade café, Coffevolution, Northern Tea House, Moon Cafe. MedOne Restaurant is fabulous too! Then the villages such as Lindley, Holmfirth, Slaithwaite, Marsden all have fantastic shops, cafes and pubs. The surrounding countryside is breathtaking also. You can get to Leeds and Manchester very easily on the train to from Huddersfield and a number of village stations on route.
I grew in Huddersfield and the late 80s and early 90s were amazing. ❤Huddersfield. Sort it out and bring this very special town back to its best. Btw the women in Huddersfield are gorgeous 😍
The Grove was missed, best pub I've ever been to. Huddersfield also has close rail links to Leeds, Manchester and York which is nice, shame it's over an hour to Sheffield.
Huddersfield town centre is undergoing renovation but honestly, this should have been done 10 years ago. The town was a lot more lively and had a lot more to offer when I was younger. The only thing that has changed for the good is the university and leisure centre. Most areas surrounding Huddersfield centre are dangerous, but this can be said for most towns and cities. Wakefield Road is the only place that is safe at night. Even the centre isn’t safe. The outer areas tend to be safe with a few exceptions. The best part of Huddersfield is that rail-wise, it is right in between Manchester and Leeds, and road-wise, less than an hour between Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield.
Greenhead Park, George Hotel ( birth place of Rugby League) , railway station and both station bars, birthplace of Harold Wilson ( statue outside station) and James Mason with Patrick Stewart born just round the corner in Mirfield. What's not to like?
The government and councils in every town/city in the UK has destroyed centres and shops. It's the main reason I moved to Dorset, they can't destroy wildlife and scenery. Also I'm not too far from Devon and Cornwall.
The piazza is being torn down, then rebuilt into a green space i believe. The reason all the units are empty is because the tenancies have all reached their end and the council/landlord will not be renewing them now. Other than that, 3/5 seems pretty fair 😊

Greenfield/Uppermill pls. I've been there a few times with my family and it's quite rural but it's really nice. It has many hills that you can go up aswell and a cool bit of history is that you can see little "stubs" on many ppls front garden walls where railings used to be but they were taken off to be used to make weapons for WW2

Moved to Huddersfield 17 years ago and it's pretty bad in comparison to what it once was mostly due to the most incompetent council in England (I guess you could start a video series on that!). I mean, it's not like we didn't have much going for us. We had Town promoted to Premier League and still failed to attract investors leaving no alternative but to go out and spend money elsewhere (York, Leeds, Junction 32, Manchester). Places like Barnsley and Wakefield evolved. We got left in the dust. Still, it's a nice place to live.

The Piazza is part of major redevelopment works at the moment, new music venue, food hall , library and art gallery i being built on that site. Town centre isn’t great but the real beauty in Huddersfield is the villages and smaller communities outside the centre.
So if you ever go to Huddersfield town again please pop into Tommy's lounge, it is a cafe for Veterans but anyone is welcome. It is by the train station, a little hidden down an alley way at 17 station street. The mother and daughter who run it are so lovely and the little company needs help and support to stay open.
You missed the giant “sculptures” they spent 3/4 of a million on also the new “floor” they spent god knows how much on. The 170 nail bars and charity shops, the local pissheads outside maccies usually fighting and the 100 people that pester you on your lunch break asking you to buy stuff. That’s Huddersfield.
Its no different to many other towns. Some run down areas, some really smart places. The Piazza Centre is being redevloped, but that will likely take many years to do.
It is not the Plazza Centre, it is clearly Piazza. On that same topic, it hasn't been "abandoned", the area where the Piazza is will be the centre piece of a 10 year long redevelopment that is currently underway.
I used to live there 15 years ago. It’s gone rapidly downhill since whereas neighbouring Halifax has recently gone shooting up because of the huge success of the Piece Hall and many TV dramas/films bringing in millions for development.
Castle Hill and Greenhead Park are lovely and the views from Castle Hill are stunning. I live a few miles out of the town and it’s very sad. Hopefully the regeneration planned for the town will help it grow as it has a great University and it should be vibrant and thriving. Thank you for your honest comments
The plaza centre got shut down because very close to, like 3-5 minutes away there is this giant mall kind thing, which attracted more visitors and generally was more appealing to the regular customer, this lost loads of loyal customers of the plaza shops, which were mostly closed down. A few of the shops, however, were relocated either at the mall or near the mall, for instance the entertainer.
Plaza centre and the Queens gate market behind those empty shops is getting refurbished. I've been told its the next major project for the town. There's been a gang problem in recent years but I've seen places much worse.
Nah, incompetent politicians hit it 10 years prior. It's been in decline since 2009 while places like Barnsley got renovated. It's ridiculous. Still like living here though but have to go out to find stuff to do.

Its not a bad town. Its exceptionally beautiful in certain areas. The problems are 1) one of the most dysfunctional and corrupt local councils in the UK 2) Town was hit particularly hard by austerity, has some of the highest poverty rates in the UK 3) its geographically close to much bigger wealthier cities such as Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield which makes it difficult to attract investment

The councillor's are the ones to blame they don't even truly represents the wards they are from. Most to busy pleasing others within the council rather than asking what the locals want. Huddersfield crime rate is extremely high, sexual and viloent offenses are disgusting. I could go on and on how bad the really are but most council's the same.
I stayed with family friends there for a month and i loved it the nature was nice, it was fun to walk around and all that, but id say the sketchiest part is the bus station. I would always see groups of teens in ski masks being loud and trying to fight each other and the cops. Besides all that i loved it
Central government has cut council funding 18% per person in real terms since 2010 leaving Kirklees Council with a £47million deficit and the government are forcing them to sell off 50 assets, the only reason for this is the political choice of austerity forced on us by first past the post, we need proportional representation to get rid of the 2 party duopoly of Labour and Tories.

How most towns are going unfortunately. Shops are empty because you can get almost everything you need online.

I mean, it's not like we didn't have much going for us. We had Town promoted to Premier League and still failed to attract investors leaving no alternative but to go out and spend money elsewhere (York, Leeds, Junction 32, Manchester). Places like Barnsley and Wakefield evolved. We got left in the dust. Still, it's a nice place to live.
The same guys in charge of the Barnsley revival have started a 10 year regeneration project in Hudds, so hopefully that works out

The Piazza is part of major redevelopment works at the moment, new music venue, food hall , library and art gallery i being built on that site.
Town centre isn’t great but the real beauty in Huddersfield is the villages and smaller communities outside the centre.
So if you ever go to Huddersfield town again please pop into Tommy's lounge, it is a cafe for Veterans but anyone is welcome. It is by the train station, a little hidden down an alley way at 17 station street. The mother and daughter who run it are so lovely and the little company needs help and support to stay open.
Piazza is going under renovation works where queens gate market is being closed and rebuilt with a shopping centre that’s why it’s all empty
The centre is a mess but the surrounding areas are nice. The suburbs and market villages have really nice restaurants, pubs and great for walks
You missed the giant “sculptures” they spent 3/4 of a million on also the new “floor” they spent god knows how much on. The 170 nail bars and charity shops, the local pissheads outside maccies usually fighting and the 100 people that pester you on your lunch break asking you to buy stuff. That’s Huddersfield.
Its no different to many other towns. Some run down areas, some really smart places. The Piazza Centre is being redevloped, but that will likely take many years to do.
It is not the Plazza Centre, it is clearly Piazza. On that same topic, it hasn't been "abandoned", the area where the Piazza is will be the centre piece of a 10 year long redevelopment that is currently underway.

I used to live there 15 years ago. It’s gone rapidly downhill since whereas neighbouring Halifax has recently gone shooting up because of the huge success of the Piece Hall and many TV dramas/films bringing in millions for development.
I went to Huddersfield once. Won't go again.

Castle Hill and Greenhead Park are lovely and the views from Castle Hill are stunning. I live a few miles out of the town and it’s very sad. Hopefully the regeneration planned for the town will help it grow as it has a great University and it should be vibrant and thriving. Thank you for your honest comments
The plaza centre got shut down because very close to, like 3-5 minutes away there is this giant mall kind thing, which attracted more visitors and generally was more appealing to the regular customer, this lost loads of loyal customers of the plaza shops, which were mostly closed down. A few of the shops, however, were relocated either at the mall or near the mall, for instance the entertainer.
Plaza centre and the Queens gate market behind those empty shops is getting refurbished. I've been told its the next major project for the town. There's been a gang problem in recent years but I've seen places much worse.

Nah, incompetent politicians hit it 10 years prior. It's been in decline since 2009 while places like Barnsley got renovated. It's ridiculous. Still like living here though but have to go out to find stuff to do.

Its not a bad town. Its exceptionally beautiful in certain areas.
The problems are 1) one of the most dysfunctional and corrupt local councils in the UK 2) Town was hit particularly hard by austerity, has some of the highest poverty rates in the UK 3) its geographically close to much bigger wealthier cities such as Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield which makes it difficult to attract investment

Tbf the development of the Piazza is still ongoing, as is Kingsgate, so feels unfair to judge on that, plus the new performance space opening in the church gardens next month. Much to work on but nowhere near the worse

The centre is more or less a dump these days sadly but go to Holmfirth, Honley, Slawit or Marsden and you’ll see a different side x
The councillor's are the ones to blame they don't even truly represents the wards they are from. Most to busy pleasing others within the council rather than asking what the locals want.
Huddersfield crime rate is extremely high, sexual and viloent offenses are disgusting.
I could go on and on how bad the really are but most council's the same.
I stayed with family friends there for a month and i loved it the nature was nice, it was fun to walk around and all that, but id say the sketchiest part is the bus station. I would always see groups of teens in ski masks being loud and trying to fight each other and the cops. Besides all that i loved it

Central government has cut council funding 18% per person in real terms since 2010 leaving Kirklees Council with a £47million deficit and the government are forcing them to sell off 50 assets, the only reason for this is the political choice of austerity forced on us by first past the post, we need proportional representation to get rid of the 2 party duopoly of Labour and Tories.

What happened to the plaza centre? Just read the signs which says it's under development and a new place is emerging.

Kirklees council is the main reason the centre is a 💩 hole. I live a little further out in a lovely area. Its abit like dropping a turd the further out. You go the less shitty 😂 the train station is stunning as you said but the train service is diabolical 😅.
