- Leading exponents of traditional Japanese instruments perform with Orchestra of the Swan, shakuhachi Grand Master James Nyoraku Schlefer and Yumi Kurosawa, one of the most exciting young soloists on Japan's national instrument, the koto, delicacy and virtuosity in harmony
"KOTO CONCERTO: GENJI" (A Kyo-Shin-An Arts commission)
Composed by Daron Aric Hagen
performed by Orchestra of the Swan
Soloist Yumi Kurosawa -- koto
Conductor David Curtis
Born and raised in Japan, Kurosawa's training on the 13 strings Koto began at age three. She studied with her parents Kazuo and Chikako Kurosawa both accomplished Koto players. At age fifteen, Kurosawa began her studies on the 20 strings Koto under Nanae Yoshimura.
@@missplainjane3905 what kind of question is this? This has no relation to the topic or the performance. And your comments are kind of shallow in nature, not just by the fact that you could have typed them into your Google search engine, but also in the manner which you phrase your questions. What are you implying when you ask those questions about highly advanced society etc? That Asians are lowly in nature and barbaric compared to you westerners?
@@samuelng6441
There's nothing wrong in what I'm asking. Furthermore, I'm not even from any western nation to begin with. Please don't make any assumption.
I was looking for a green cyborg ninja dude but found this instead. I love it

Kurosawa has toured extensively throughout Japan, Malaysia, Russia, Germany, Canada and the US and has received praise for her performances in the NY Times and Washington Post. She continues to perform in local New York City venues such as Joe’s Pub, the Highline Ballroom and the Blue Note.
Her first album “Beginning of a Journey” was released in 2009.
She holds a BA in International Relations and is a member of the Computer Music Lab at Keio University, Tokyo.
The entire performance is gorgeous, however the piece at 29:16 is absolutely stunning
Since her arrival to New York City in 2002, Kurosawa has worked within the traditional Japanese and contemporary classical music genre but also collaborates with a range of artists including a multitude of musicians, dancers and visual designers. The innovative approach in her original compositions is without boundaries, seamlessly blending her traditional training with elements of modern Jazz and electronica.
Kurosawa is a recipient of multiple awards including first prize at the Japanese National Koto Competition in 1989 and 1992 and a scholarship from the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan in 1998. That same year, she performed with the Prague Cello Ensemble at Suntory Hall in Tokyo and was featured in the NHK produced GENJI MONOGATARI WAKANA as principal soloist, playing Koto amongst an all western string ensemble.
Kurosawa made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2006 at Weill Recital Hall. In 2011 she was principal soloist in Daren Haven's KOTO CONCERTO GENJI which premiered in New York City, US with the Lark String Quartet and in Stratford-upon-Avon, England with the Orchestra of the Swan. The piece continues to be performed by string quartets Voxare, Arianna and Lark String Quartet. In 2013, Kurosawa was principal soloist for the premier of THE MEMORY STONE music by Marty Regan at the Houston Grand Opera. She is currently composing music for Mathew Ozawa's FALLEN and will act as co-composer and featured performer. The piece is scheduled to premier in Chicago, 2014. Also she is principal soloist in Koto Concerto GENJI with Hawaii Symphony Orchestra on May 17th and 18th, 2014.
She isn`t only playing the instrument, she is living the music, you can see her feeling the sounds...

Awesome! I was planning to do this at my high school with the Orchestra for a concert! Recently I introduced my Koto to the Orchestra and showed them this video and seem intrigued to do such a concert right away! Arigato gozaimasu! Thanks a lot for the upload!

I can't imagine what would a koto concert would sound like if this instrument was discovered in the late 18th century...

Really is beautiful

I'm really wanting someone to do a Shalamar song on koto, but I'm digging this.
Ah... O koto em sua força e suavidade...

Who is this wonderful composer?! His arrangement is absolutely gorgeous!
The words "East Meets West" isn't the title of the song.
The person who uploaded this realized that it was a mix of western and eastern instruments, thus East Meets West.
It's not ridiculous at all but rather gives a quick explanation of the style of the song
+Ivan Ong
If you really want to be accurate, you should also be aware that this piece isn't a song. "Song" is one of the most misused words in the English language.
I need koto (you know in what voice to read this, come on)
more textured tones and more percussive, and illusive, the zheng instrument is very flowing and water like, koto sounds like paper, ink, stone, earth and impermanence...
How pretty.
Just send an email to Daron in care of his website and he'll put you in touch with the right folks to get the music!
Eheeeeeem
WOW! 31:20 beautiful
Thank you UA-cam I’m having an identity crisis now :)
Im currently trying to compose for a koto among western instruments using sibelius. Is there any major dos and don'ts? Thanks :)
Sibelius has many Northern Lights sounds that fit this stuff.
After watching kono oto tomare! and Nodame Cantabile be like:
Koto is original from Chinese tradional musicial instrument-Guzheng. Nowadays most of Koto still 13 strings like in China Tang dynasty and Guzheng now in China 18-23 or more strings.
koto was developed from the zheng. they are both beautiful
What is the encore again? Sorry I couldn't hear her.
+Natheniel Becken The name of her composition is Inner Space, as you can see here: www.amazon.co.jp/Beginning-Journey-Kurosawa-Yumi/dp/B002KWLTLU/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1432042671&sr=1-1
The Koto needs to be heard more loudly to make more impact or state more forcefully its theme.
Where is Ivor?
0:33 this is like a Soundtrack from liyue from genshin dang the vibes it give me chills it's so beautiful and calm and soothing
Bello concierto... interesante, dulce. Pero lo que creo es que al Koto le falta sonoridad para estar en plan de concierto con una orquesta... Es mas como para musica de camara... Me pregunto si un luthier japones pudiera hacer un instrumento mas sonoro...
Koto is weirdly way too similar to a Turkish instrument called "Kanun". I recommend checking that as well
is that a 20 or 21 strings koto???
Is this the same orchestra that did 5 composers 1 idea?!
I need healing (?
is it wano logo? lol
I'm here because of DnD
a Guzheng is usually shorter than a Koto. Most of musicians know what is the different between the Koto and Guzheng. Personally, I prefer the Koto. It could produce better dynamic sounds...
29:16
Her playing is very good. Lets talk about her dress: a weird combination of Japanese Kimono Obi (Belt) and Chinese Traditional Underwear Dudou. Kinda stange. Also the piece sounds sometimes like Chinese music. No offense though.
twosetviolin brought me here
mmhmmm
not true most musicians don't, unless they are familure with eastern instroments.
most people in the west have no idea what a koto, guzheng, shamisan, or shakuhachi,ect... even are.
She should wear kimono
普通
wow it just struck me how ridiculous the title is? "east meets west"? what is east and what is west anyways? not very imaginative sheesh.
Kinda sounds Chinese to me.. especially the beginning
