Thank you so much, you’re a gifted teacher and painter. I’ve learned so much about value, warm, cool colors, and planes, to create atmospheric perspective. Your way of analyzing the paintings with visuals is invaluable. The teaching on the limitations of a photo reference and simplification with large shapes of value was fantastic. Again thank you so very much. I look forward to learning more from you! Susan
Great video! Thanks for featuring the painting at Fifth Lake by Edgar Payne, my all time hero, me also being a painter of the Sierra Nevadas. I've painted at fifth lake years ago, lovely spot at 10k feet, mule packed in for a week; we camped at one of Payne's old camp spots!! Where is fifth lake you ask? Well it's between 4th and 6th lakes of course! They are also great places to paint. Spent a day at 6th Lake, at 11,000 foot el. Tying your boot laces is a big deal up there, let alone trekking with painting gear on your back, but so worth it!! If you ever want to go Phil let me know, Big Pine Canyon; I'll put you in touch with my friend who was with me then, but I'm too old to go now!! ;D
I really like this way of looking and thinking - its as if light is floating as a magic stick embracing everything through subtle value changes - warm pink cool orange its songs of colour and nearly same value = its very beautifull
Nice work, Phil! I’ve learned a lot from you over the years that has helped me improve. You’re a great teacher and an awesome artist. Keep up the good work!
Merci beaucoup; vous avez décris avec beaucoup de talent l'essentiel pour comprendre la vibration des couleurs et de la lumière , cela est très instructif ; Aldo
Thank you! I had to search really hard on UA-cam to find some instructors who actually know what they’re talking about. You must keep it up! Do you have a Patreon?
And I thought I was strange! People say it was easier to paint from photos because the camera already transforms 3 dimensions into 2. But I too find it easier to work from life. Maybe a photo is already an interpretation and might take away what I might have left in. I don't know. But nice to find someone who feels the same way!
Great video and information. Thanks for taking the time to make this one. Much appreciated.
I love your tutorials, they are incredibly informative. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Your welcome Chris

Sorry for the late reply, glad you enjoyed the videos, I’m starting them up again very soon.
I find working from black and white photos gives you better values than colour.
Can you please list the names of all the painters. I’m hard of hearing and struggled with what you said. Thanks.
I will do that on videos in the future Claude

I can’t paint from a photo. No way. The camera doesn’t show what I see at all.
You're right Elsa, photos are definitely a step down from the real thing, but are a useful tool.
