Hello, My ENT recently confirmed what I had been told by my orthodontist over 20 years ago after extraction orthodontia. I did not realize that this condition is the cause of a myriad of ongoing debilitating issues I was currently having. I suffer from sinusitis several times a year so I keep my ENT on standby. Within the last year, I’ve been under extreme stress and in a period of six months I’ve developed migraine headaches, vertigo, blurred vision and now am wearing Rx to work, tingling in my toes and an annoying ringing in my ear which is presently keeping me up at 2am. I’ve always had the clicking jaw. It is effecting my mood and overall life as many times it is difficult to focus. After a bout of ER trips, docs visits and CT scan no one can find anything specifically wrong. I now have an appt with a neurologist next month. It was not until my ENT told me I had TMJD I started to put everything together. I did not know that it effected your whole system in this way initially. It was quite difficult finding a dentist in the area who specializes in this disorder. I’m finding that insurance unfortunately does not cover much of the treatment and the NTI guard which is several hundred dollars. This treatment at this point is not optional for me because I cannot function normally at this point. Is there anything you can suggest that would offer immediate relief to immediately relieve the pressure that is causing all the symptoms. Thanks so much and God bless!
Very helpful. I got TMD after extraction retraction procedure. I actually didn't stick with the procedure and have now an implant. But I do have muscle tightness/tenderness in my jaw chronically which also spreads to my neck, back and basically whole body, not painfully but annoyingly, uncomfortable. Now I am thinking about getting orthodontic treatment to get it fixed. I am mainly worried about not finding a highly skilled doctor and cost of treatment.
At 9 years old, I was diagnosed with locked jaw. Over the years, my jaw stopped locking up and started popping and pain. I lived with it for over ten years. Now I am 35 years old, I just got diagnosed with TMJ and trying to get help for it. I saw an orthodontist that I will have to pay out of pocket for.
Hi! It can be a tall task to expand the jaw once a certain age has been reached. Also, the long-term effects of extraction/retraction were unknown for a long time.
Hi Dr Priya - I'm a subscriber and have learned much from watching your videos. What is your take on Invisalign Vs Braces as a treatment option, and what precauations that we need to take, if any?
Hi doctor, would you be able to let us know the different types of splinter and the usage of it (probably in the next video), and also which kind is more suitable to tmj wearer. I understand there are also day and night splinter, may i know the differences. But for people with bad bite / clencher will splinter be the long term solution?
Hello doctor!! I have TMJ and I'm wearing splint for past 1 month...I have a wisdom tooth to be removed in 2 weeks...does removal of wisdom tooth worsen TMJ?
Hi! Please stay tuned for my video this Friday as it is about wisdom teeth and TMJD. The short answer is that extractions can exacerbate TMJD symptoms.
Hi pooja, may i know if wearing dental splint helps in your tmj condition? If so how does the splint looks like? I checked online there's so many different splint and night guard out there.
Hello there. Im not sure if you will answer to this as this is an old video. I've had TMJ for more than 15 years and almost always my jaw is locked closed. What I do to unlock it is push a small muscle on my joint and I can open fully. My teeth were not aligned for my bite to be correct, so I now have Invisalign hoping that fixing my bite will relax the overactive muscles. Keep in mind that I only had a problem on the left side. A few weeks now and after 1 year of Invisalign (i still have some months left) I now have a problem on my right side. Im in pain and I have to push the muscle to unlock my jaw to open. Im very worried as to how I should continue. My dentist seems to not make the connection, im not sure she is a tmj specialist but there arent many in Greece. What I want to ask is if you think that theres a chance Invisalign made it worse, and if so, who should I be advised from and what kind of tests should I do to find out whats going on. I wish i was in the US so I could visit you, but im trying to get as much insight as I can on what my next steps should be over here . Its very frustrating, I have a lower quality of life because of this and I cant take it anymore
Can you do a video on what you do for your patients that had pre-molars extracted that now have TMJ problems? Obviously, we can’t get those them back. 😞 Are they always treated the same way as those w/out extractions? & are these patients more difficult to treat?
Premolar extraction/retraction patients are treated the same ways my other patients. Oftentimes their TMJD condition is pretty severe but we still get good results.
Hey doctor! I currently have TMJ and I’ve been wearing my splint for around 2 months now. My TMJ doc told me I should wear it for around 6 months. Was wondering if I could get braces once my treatment is done? I have an overbite and crooked teeth, and I’ve always wanted braces to straighten them and fix my bite.
Hi there! It’s really best if you consult with your doctor about this. I don’t feel comfortable advising you unless I examine you in person. Good luck! 👍🏼
Hey doc. Will controlled arch braces make my face widen than before? I have narrow face so will it make my face shorten like little cheeky? And aesthetically good looking?
Theoretically, if you’re teeth never touch (correct posture) does that mean occlusion shouldn’t matter? Occlusion matters only when your are occluding. Is that a better way to look at it?
Hi there! Our teeth come together 1000 times a day when we swallow and also when chewing, clenching, and bruxing.. so occlusion does matter :) Certain occlusal schemes have a higher chance of leading to TMJD.
I have a small airway to begin with, and an open bite. Will I require orthodontia? Also, my understanding is for LVI dentists, orthodontia is not optional, rather it is an integral part of the treatment they offer.
Hello ma'am, 1) Does overbite cause the TMJ? 2) And does orthognathic bottom surgery can help to correct the jaw overbite and cure the TMJ at the same time? Or overbite and TMJ are different issues? I do have jaw overbite and TMJ which I found recently and looking forward to have the Invisalign. Please help which treatment would be the best in long run. Thank you very much.

Hello, i have tmd caused by braces and got braces put back on to help correct it. how will i know that my tmd is going away? should i avoid extending my jaw too much to let it heal?
I got braces 8 months ago and started getting tmj symptoms ear pain, dizziness, headaches. Since you got your braces back on have your tmj symptoms subside?
Hlo , I got braces and my mouth didnt opened fully after that (i didnt realised it until my jaw started to make noice) my 4 teeths got extracted for braces. Now my tmj specialist said to get braces to expand my palate width to get rid of tmd. Can you pls tell me is it possible to cure tmd permanently by expanding arch? Pls pls rply
I had braces when i was 7-8 yr ago age 14, then after it got removed there was jaw dis alignment on my left jaw, no pain and clicking sound. Can it be treated by any surgery or method?? Pls ans.
Doc, I have this recent problem that is right-side of my inner cheek is literally getting smashed by both wisdom teeth (upper and lower). Is there any possibility to correct this with braces and palatal expander?!! Sorry to ask, last question doc.
I have the same issue, my joint doesnt open and close at the same time. my left joint goes too far forward when opening my mouth but the right side is fixed in its position thats why my right cheek is bigger. may because muscle is stiff. i had my braces installed 3 months ago because I have class 3 underbite. will braces help? because I'm starting to find chiropractors who could help me fix my jaw alignment
My right side teeth was grown very inward than left due to which i have swollen cheek on right .... As i having braces my right teeth will repositioned to ideal place. Will my cheek swolleness will be cured?
Hi Priya, I have started getting TMJ a few months into braces to straighten my teeth. I never had a problem with jaw pain before braces. Do you think I should discuss discontinuing treatment with my ortho or would it be worth it to complete treatment and see what happens after? Thank you for your channel!
@@harshitbhatia139 hey, I ended up asking my orthodontist to take the braces off. He didn’t want to, but I am so glad I did it. I refused a retainer and let my teeth move back to their natural positions. Now my TMJ is almost nonexistent.
@Sarah i too have got them removed last week, how long did teeth take to fall back to original? anything else u did to ensure they get to their natural place?
@@harshitbhatia139 Congrats on getting them off! I would say it depends on how long you had the braces on for. In my case, I had them on for 4 months, and it took about 4 months for teeth to reverse back. Everyone is different so your teeth may move faster or slower than mine. But the pain got better with every passing week for me. I did use CBD oil to manage some of the pain and inflammation while I was waiting for my bite to go back to normal- I don’t need it anymore though!

Great question - the terminology is kind of confusing. The term "splint" can be used interchangeably with the term "nightguard" and the term "orthotic". But an orthotic is not the same as a nightguard.
Ok wow that is confusing! I’ve been given a couple nightguards and a splint before. I definitely do not want to get anymore nightguards made for me. Can orthotic splints be made with different types of qualities? I was given one for my upper jaw before, but im not sure if it is an orthotic. I could not eat with it or anything. , but I found a better place I think from the iccmo site you recommended. They make orthotics to be worn 24/7.

Hi Dr Priya - I'm a subscriber and have learned much from watching your videos. What is your take on Invisalign Vs Braces as a treatment option, and what precauations that we need to take, if any?

It's not so much about the type of splint or orthotic; it's more about the relationship between the upper arch and lower arch.
