    My biggest lie....but I didn't know it was a lie until recently was......"The quilt top looks fabulous, but I am not good enough at the actual quilting part to finish it. And I don't want to mess my quilt top up with quilting that I will be embarrassed of." After I attended my first quilt show and saw my quilting was comparable in quality to many of the quilts in the show, I realized that I had believed a lie for years. Now I have started quilting my unfinished projects and turning my quilt tops into usable quilt. It is surprising what you can gain by appreciating the work other quilters do....and in turn, finding the confidence and encouragement you need to sew on.

      Also we tend to compare our quilting to the perfect quilting done by a computerized long-arm. Even the most experienced quilter won’t have that level of perfection! I know I am not a master quilter, but my quilts hold together and are appreciated by the recipient. I’m not quilting for a national show or museum, I’m quilting for people I know and love, or for charity. Besides, I will never get better if I don’t practice!

    It's a Positive Good Thing to have multiple projects on the go at once. When you lose patience with one, you'll get sloppy if you push on with it and you'll get more impatient and irritated and around and around. If you just put it aside and work on something else until you feel like getting back to it you'll do better work and enjoy it more. Really, it's the right thing to do! No guilt!

      I used to be "strict" with myself about 1 project at a time but I discovered the same thing! You are very wise. I have found that sometimes when a quilt just isn't "working" for me--putting it away for a time really helps me to see it with fresh eyes & fix the issue. Good advice.

    • @maureentaphouse5206
      @maureentaphouse5206 10 місяців тому

      I think this depends what type of person you are. It stresses me out to have too many on the go. Even if I've made several charity tops and they are neatly lying over my landing bannister it stresses me out to see more than 1 or 2 there. I feel a sense of relief when I've quilted them. So I say do what works for you and don't worry about what others do. The main thing is enjoy what you make and USE them ( which I do) so everyone wins.

    Promising yourself to make "a block a day" of one particular quilt", as you know this does not work. But will tell you what does work, at least for me. I sew "every day" at something, usually about 3-4 projects and I am turning out finished projects on regular basis. Fact is you don't feel like working on specific project because I don't feel like cutting all day, or applique all day, sewing at machine all day--just does not work, but what does is work on something daily gets it done. And I enjoy my sewing journey. FINISHED IS BETTER THAN PERFECT!

    I think we just have to ditch the guilt. It's a hobby - and "we" are the ones who should be making the rules or plan for ourselves - and we can change them. It's okay to change and evolve in what you do. I am positive not every painter only works on one project at a time. Authors often have several ideas simmering at once. We quilters are so hard on ourselves. Love those potholders you showed. Would love to get some of those for Christmas! :) (Not so much table things anymore - as my table is in constant use for fabric.)

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  11 місяців тому +2

      YES! Love this! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this! WE do need to be easier on ourselves! My parents always tease me about the amount of fabric I have, but they don't seem to tease my husband (a woodworker) about the amount of wood he has. It makes you think about the double standards, doesn't it? I agree--we should be allowed to treat our craft how we decide to treat it. Thank you so much for sharing!
      As for the projects, I pinned a comment with the playlist! ❤️

    Wow Kris you hit all the nails on the head!!! I tell myself all the time, but I am not going to buy fabric and then I do and yes, I feel guilty! I also feel guilty about being a squirrel and starting something before I finish something else. I have a whole big corner of this lie!! For our Quilt Guild we were told to make ourselves a name tag. I decided to make my background a squirrel. That’s me. I am a squirrel!!! I will never use all the fabric I have, but I keep buying more. Because it makes me happy! I have just decided to be happy. If I don’t get the Quilt done meh then it isn’t done. You’re right. We really don’t have deadlines with most of the things we make. So why take the joy out of it? Great video. It’s nice to know we’re not alone. ❤

    RE: Lie #3 - I will use up my scraps.
    The Good Night Irene tutorial proved to be the breakthrough scrap buster for me.
    Beth, at My Sewing Room, mentioned getting fabric from Marshalls Dry Goods in Arkansas, so I gave it a look.
    I ended up buying an entire bolt of 120" wide muslin. That made me feel safe.
    If I messed up, I had plenty of fabric for do overs.
    I forget if the bolt is 15 yards or 25 yards, but it looks like I haven't touched it yet
    However, I have "finished" 3 Good Night Irene quilt tops, another scrappy pattern, 35 10 inch string blocks (and counting), and a twin size quilt top of 4" half square triangles. Half square triangles were something scary to me. I would have never tried them without that safety net of a bolt of neutral muslin.
    That "bolt" has been my safety net so I know I will not run out of fabric. And, now the scraps are being used up. Life is good.
    PS. I also started the forever project of the Cathedral Quilt quilt. Simply because, if I mess up, I have more muslin for the squares.

    You are spot on! But besides fabric, I have a habit of buying project patterns. I have bags, table runners, aprons, and of course quilt patterns that I never seem to get to, but have fun looking at. But I think the worst bad habit I have that I am trying really hard to kick is that I tend to point out all my mistakes whenever somebody admires my work. What’s up with that? I also apologize whenever I give somebody a quilt that isn’t “perfect“. Which, of course is every single one. Thank you for putting so succinctly what all quilters deal with daily.

    This year, I only 3 family members quilts for Christmas. (I just had shoulder surgery so I had an excuse, LOL, plus I have one queen size quilt in progress and a new grandchild on the way.) But I also promised myself that I would use some of my stash this year, like last year, making lap robes, wheelchair lap robes and shawls for my doctor to give out to her homebound and hospice patients (one patient last year was 93, another 108). That brings me joy so it is a private priority. --- As for multiple projects, I have a bookcase in my sewing area that is just for current projects. When I get ready to sew, I pick out whichever project calls to me that day. I know they will all get done eventually because they are all right there in plain sight, and not stuffed away in a closet or bin. No guilt on that one.

    I am a fabric curator for my museum of fabric. You cannot tell me otherwise. I have a basic stash now though so now I only purchase fabric I just can't live without or would be perfect for an upcoming project. And I replace the colors/prints I use a lot (e.g., black, white, and sepia tones)
    I clean up as I go as I find it's easier for me to keep my sewing room tidy doing it that way. Then, after each larger project (a quilt or a more intensive garment) I clean the entire room (dust, put everything away, vacuum, make sure the sewing machine is cleaned too) so it's a "brand new" sewing studio each time.
    I'm the kind of person that prefers to do only one project at a time - because I pour myself into my sewing projects and am exhausted when one is completed. But if I am doing a larger project that will take some time (like a quilt) I will let myself do other smaller projects at the same time, like a simple bag or an apron.
    Stick to the plan??? I have rheumatoid arthritis and learned many long times ago sticking to a plan doesn't work. I might have a deadline goal I can't reach due to pain. Or I cut the last piece of a fabric wrong and don't have enough to cut out a replacement so have to substitue a fabric. Or a friend drops over unannounced. Or a winter storm cuts out electricity. Or...or...or...well, you get the gist. I have a saying: Life gets in the way of living.

If they get done, they get done. i could be sewing/piecing for over 3,000 yrs. and still be at it. I love your videos, and I enjoyed the one w/your son, and I learned a thing or two. It was a fun video. And I love to purchase fabric, while visiting my cousin in MO. last May, I was able to go to 2 quilt shops , one in Nevada, where she lives and the other in Lamar and I got some real nice fabric in 2nd hand stores that we visited, so much fun and so many memories. I have bought too much fabric recently. I know the reason. Lately, it seems like the fabric lines I like have sold out quickly before I have had a chance to buy all the pieces I want. I don’t have a local quilt shop, so I have to order online. I don’t buy precuts, so I like to buy just some of the fabrics to see if I like the line. Then if I decide I want more, the major online shops have sold out, and I’m sent scrambling to buy the other prints from a series of small shops because no one shop has everything I want. I worry that I might not have enough of a print to make a background or border, so I buy a larger amount than I might buy if I knew I could find more later. Does that all make sense? It seems to be a never ending cycle.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  11 місяців тому +5

      Oh my goodness-this makes so much sense! I am starting to believe that is part of the marketing strategy! Companies only do one run on fabric now. It didn’t used to be like that. It is super frustrating. No wonder quilts shops are struggling, too! They can’t keep up with the big guys. I can relate to everything you are saying. It is so tempting! And you don’t want to be searching all over for that one print that is out of stock. Completely understand. ❤️

      Thanks for describing your experience because I’m finding it increasingly stressful to shop for fabric. Within a couple of weeks of the release it’s difficult to find a store that has the complete collection. Then it becomes very time consuming and expensive because of shipping charges. I do think it’s a marketing strategy but in the long run people will become frustrated and possibly move onto another hobby.

    • @Carol_Sews
      @Carol_Sews 11 місяців тому +3

      @@dianelouise3944 It would be a shame to have this fabric frustration drive people away from quilting. I think some of the fabric lines are just too big. Smaller quilt shops can’t afford to carry entire lines. When I had a local quilt shop, I mixed fabrics from various lines. Now that I can’t see the fabrics in person before I buy, I choose from one line so that I know the colors won’t clash.

Finish before starting another, again not me as I have unfinished welding projects and been collecting for a retirement project and 2 days ago I bought even more material for the next quilt. Yesterday re-started current quilt after 3 weeks not even looking at it. After only about 10 quilts over 5 years I don't have a real lot of scraps. Well, as you say, I’m making a new memory, so who cares that I’m (temporarily) “ditching” my BOM and my new bed quilt for myself. It’s true that things can suddenly inspire you to go in another direction. So I’m going! 😊

    This falls a little bit with sticking with the plan. I had quilts I stopped working on because I got bored with them. I felt guilty because I was so excited to initially start it. I finally got the courage to allow myself to change the plan, which usually was something as simple as making it smaller than the original plan or even turning it into a pillow, table runner or wall hanging instead. This usually works really well for me because I still like the design and I feel good completing it

    I can relate to all of them. But I’ve put things away for a small season and not quilting for a while. I love it so much I am being convicted for giving it first place in my life. I homeschool my last two kiddos and very involved in church I feel like I don’t have a lot of time for quilting some days. That’s depressing. I am a work in progress. God is absolutely good! Blessings from Texas.

      Oh wow. I am so sorry you are giving up what you love, even if it is for a season. I wonder if you can set some time aside to quilt, since you love it so much? I wish I could help, especially since it is making you feel depressed. One of my favorite Bible verses is Proverbs 31: 13. Maybe it will help you, too? Or even adding a quilting minister to your hobby. Just a thought. Love and blessings to you, too. ❤️

    With regard to the tendency to grow our fabric stash much faster than we can use it, there is also the consideration of how much disposable income the family has. I have to be very careful most of the time not to overspend my income, and so I realized now that I cannot afford much impulse buying. But I do allow myself to buy fabric if I have a specific project in mind or if it will be the perfect thing to help me use part of my stash.

    Hi Kris. You were reading my mind!!! I have one extra guilt issue: I make lots of things for charity, so find myself guilt tripping if I don't sit at the machine for "just another 15 minutes" which turns into an hour. By then, my back is sore, I've overdone the work and the joy is gone. I'm working on this by telling myself that the energy in the project has to be joyful or it has to be put away for now. This has helped me stop while I'm still having a blast to enjoy a cup of tea (and a cookie of course!) Thanks Kris!

    (Jayne) as a fairly new quilter, I have found when a new line of fabric comes out and a pattern, if u don't buy it fairly quickly it maybe sold out when I'm actually ready to start the new quilt and then I'm scrabbling to find all the fabric and ending up spending alot of shipping from a number of shops I had to go to to get it all.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  11 місяців тому +2

      So true! I have had that happen to me more than once. It seems to be getting worse, too. I honestly feel it is partially a marketing strategy to create frenzies around new patterns and new lines of fabric. A great example of this is the pumpkin pattern I show in the video. The pattern works really well with 2.5” strips but the pattern has you making it with a specific layer cake. Unless you really have some experience, it would be difficult to transfer/translate that pattern to use other cuts of fabric. I wish I knew how to help. Just know you aren’t alone, Jayne! Thank you for sharing.

    I can relate to ALL the lies. I’ve found I really have to tell myself there is no one putting these pressures on me. I am putting pressure on me to make a wedding quilt for a specific date and I’ve procrastinated all the way to a month before the event to finish. They don’t know I’m doing this, but I’m determined. Thanks for this video, Kris. I get support from you in my slightly quirky approach to quilting and other crafts! Trying to keep it fun, trying not to be super critical of my finished products, trying to allow myself to have a Plan B when the first iteration of a project is a flop! I am also a multiple project person. Usually a quilt or two and a knitting thing are ongoing. And sometimes I put something away for months (like the Pumpkin project) if I am not jazzed about it. Often when I look at it again in a few months, I get interested and off I go again to finish it. Anyhow, thank you again for the helpful and supportive video!

    My lie is that I will use already fabric in stash for backing, but I'm very fussy in having the right backing so off I go to my quilt shop, now buy wide backs and find some times I'll make a scrap quilt in colours that suit the backings I have on hand. An excellent video, we all have at least some of these in common as quilters. I have all of these but I have solved most of them by saying, "Quilting is not a job, its a hobby, do it at the pace you want, dont work on deadlines. I also tell myself I can judiciously buy what I think I will use, as long as I don't spend myself into financial difficulty. I have several people I want to give quilts to but I have limited myself to one to two gift quilts a year. Everyone knows who is getting a quilt because I work with them to choose designs, etc. And I make them and give them and dont wait for the holidays. It saves myself deadline pressure also. The main problem I still have is keeping neat and tidy. I try to clean after every quilt but before I know it, scraps and strings are everywhere.

    Thank you for these words of wisdom. My husband has unopened packs of paint, hundreds of pencils and half a dozen blocks of drawing paper. This is not a horde! But my fabric is! I have permission to feel better. ❤👍from Somerset UK

      YES! I know what you mean! My husband doesn't really give me a hard time, but others do. My husband is a woodworker and has a ton of wood, but no one says anything to him. If anything, they commend him for having so much. 😂

    Yep I agree with them all. I used to buy projects and say I'm gonna do that when I retire. Well now I'm retired and too many projects to do. Oh no! Best thing I've done is make myself a monthly list and work from that. What I don't get done it goes on next months list. I love marking stuff off. Then I add those completed projects to 2023 and it makes me feel good to look at projects that I've gotten completed. Thanks for video. Enjoyed!

    Oh my goodness Kris, I was laughing through this as I am guilty of all of this. You know the lovely scrappy hoop hangings you made. I was totally inspired. I searched Op shops and have four great hoops. I bought some extra little trimmings and then thought about the fabrics I would use. That's as far as I have gotten so far. You have liberated me though about feeling guilty about buying more fabric etc at our up and coming quilt and craft convention in October. I said I wasn't going to buy anything, yes I will, I may as well just admit it now and start my budget! haha. Enjoyed this video.

    True about fabric and memories, and why I love my scrappy quilts so much. Quilting is emotional - who knew! lol. Years ago I made a scrappy doll quilt for Granddaughter using 1.5 inch squares, since then I save all scraps. ugh! Good video,,, we should try to feel less guilty about all areas of our lives.

    I check boxes on every item. I al see o have one more. I give myself permission to quit a project that I have come to dread looking at. Life is too short to make myself do something that I loathe. I return the materials to my stash and go on to something else. Occasionally I have restarted the project and AC finished it. Oh, the satisfaction!

    Kris I tell the same lies you do! I just ignore them as lies! I tell myself I am 70 and I should do what I want. Then I think I really need to use what I have because when I die my family doesn't sew or quilt and they won't have anything to do with it. I think I should leave a few names to send my fabric to. Would you like to be one of them? I can put you on my list. I would like to make the list of people that struggle that don't have the money to purchase the new lines that come which is what I buy. Cory Yoder, Sheri and Chelsi, Lori Holt, Camille Ross-Kelly.

    Je suis totalement d accord. Je ne peux m'empêcher d'acheter du tissu. Il faut se faire plaisir. En France, nous n'avons pas de magasins de tissus à portée de main, en tout cas pas là où j'habite, alors quand l'occasion se présente, j 'en achète même si je n'ai pas de projet précis avec. J'ai toujours plusieurs projets de commencer en même temps mais j essaie toujours dd les finir surtout les grands que je fais quilter par quelqu'un car je n'ai pas le matériel pour le faire et je ne sais pas encore quilter avec une machine spécifique. Je range régulièrement mon espace de couture, mais il est régulièrement en désordre car je n'ai plus assez de place mais ce n'est pas grave car lorsque je suis dans mon atelier, je suis relâchée et zen.

      J'adore que tu puisses comprendre ! Je me demande si je dépenserais plus ou moins d'argent si je n'avais pas accès au tissu. Hmmm. 😂
