  • Grant Stewart Quartet Live @ The Cellar Restaurant/Jazz Club in Vancouver. Jesse Cahill - drums, Jodi Proznick - bass, Tardo Hammer - piano, Grant Stewart - tenor sax.
In 10 years The Cellar Restaurant and Jazz Club has established itself as not only the top jazz venue in Vancouver, but as one of the top jazz clubs in the world. In an ambitious undertaking, club owner Cory Weeds bought the establishment in the summer of 2000 and quickly turned it into the premier jazz venue in Vancouver. The focus of the club was to promote Vancouver and Canadian jazz musicians. The room has seen visits by every major player from the Vancouver Scene and across Canada. In addition Weeds has brought in many of the major names on the international scene to the club either with their own band or more often then not, to join forces with the best that the Vancouver jazz community has to offer. Some of these international musicians to perform include David 'Fathead' Newman, Tom Harrell, Charles MacPherson, Benny Golson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Ed Thigpen, Kenny Garrett, Les McCann, Scott Hamilton, Joey Defrancesco, George Coleman and Eric Alexander. The Cellar Restaurant / Jazz Club is often compared to the legendary New York nightspot, The Village Vanguard for its vibe and acoustics.

For an old man who has loved jazz for over 50 years it is thrilling to hear that jazz remains in such excellent hands. Punchy, ebullient tenor playing from Mr Stewart who, though following tradition, finds so much that is new to say. Wonderful accompaniment especially from the marvellously-named Tardo Hammer but indeed all are worthy of mention. My sincere thanks for this.

Wherever jazz goes, there will always be room for some smokin' bebop. Beautiful playing all around.

Grant is a great tenor player. I have played a bunch with him over the years and the guy is always fun to play with and be around. I think the compare game we all get into at times is just personal taste. Grant is one of very few tenor players in his generation that I think comes from Newk and Dexter. He has such a strong vocabulary behind him that he is always full of surprises in his solos.

this really has a vibe going for it. As for who's better...ha... we all get excited sometimes and say silly things. all i know is that Grant swings like crazy and he likes what he likes! I likes it too. He has a lot of influences going BUT I can recognize him quickly by his personal sound..

There are always cats dedicated to their craft in various styles that the beauty of music. The masters set the standard not the style. It's all the small pieces of the puzzle that make up the bigger picture and give genius an opportunity to emerge.Imagine a world with no music

@declaminator Whoa dude. Get a pair of ears before you go slamming someone who is waaaay above you. That's the kind of unnecessary rudeness that will keep you from being anyone in any scene. "Lavano has none" is superfluous to getting your statement across.

Can anyone explain to me why Joe Lovano is a star and Grant Stewart is not? Can't be the sound because Lovano has none and Grant has it in spades. Inventiveness? Technique? Swing? Drive? What am I missing? Lovano does dress better, though. Yes, that must be it.
