- All my Landsknechts finished for now...
this is the contents of the starter army box set plus 30 additional minis and a few Animals on the command bases.
Flags are from “Flags of War”
You have done a FABULOUS job on this army!
This is one of those periods that don't really interest me, until I see the troops. There is something about the colours and uniform flair, the two-handed swordsmen...man. I also had a small Empire army a few years back, and I just do love the aesthetic.
Thanks Justin. Yeah it’s not really a period in history I know much about or have a great deal of interest in but I kept looking at them and thought they’d look really different and colourful when they were all together. Pleased they’re finished now though.
Absolutely brilliant - you must have a wonderful sense of achievement.
Thanks Ralph. It’s a great feeling getting a project finished isn’t it. I’ve got my 15mm Romans on the paint desk now after your recent video.
Congratulations Leon. What an huge effort to paint all those fancy pants figures.
Lol thanks Paul. Happy it’s over now.
Wow. That's beautiful. You've done a really great job on these. I know how hard it is to stick it through with these guys. Excellent work on the command base with the cat and chickens.
Thanks James. Even though I batch painted them it was getting very tedious on the last pike block. Glad it’s over now lol. Love the animal frame from Warlord. I’ll be sneaking in more animals on my command bases from now on lol
First rate mate 👍😀 one of the best looking armies I've seen for ages. I like the versatility. Those flags really finish them off nicely
Thanks buddy 🙂. Glad it’s finished... for now lol. Yeah the flags are lovely. Overall I’m quite pleased and if you close one eye and shut the other you can’t see any of the mistakes 😂😂
Stunning work Leon, really fantastic looking army. After watching all of your videos over the months about these dudes, seeing them together as one completed army is brilliant. Top work all round! :)
Thanks buddy. Yeah it’s taken about 3 months to get here. I’m glad they’re finished now and I think it was a good idea to leave the flags for this final reveal
I think the flags just gave it that last excellent touch and really fit the ethos of the entire army :)
Brilliant! That army is worth a lot of $$$. Must feel prettygood gatting them done. Congrats on that. Favorite parts are the flags. So big and colorful. Oh, and the herd of chickens and cat! Well done.
~K
Thanks buddy. I’m so pleased to be finished so I can paint something else now. Yeah the flags came out really well. No army would be complete without a herd of chickens lol
Wow, most impressive work...I myself am painting similar units (in 15mm) but I am far from obtaining such a spectacular result ...Gorgeous and colorful, congrats!!😍😍😍
Thanks Phil. I think they’d be a lot harder to paint in 15mm. Especially the stripes.
Stay safe buddy
Looking really nice Leon. I think the work was worth it :) I always find the last 6-12 in a battlion to be a struggle (and where I take the short cuts) so think this army is outstanding!
Thanks mate. Yeah I really did struggle to finish the last pike block. Had to force myself to get them finished. I know there’s quite a few mistakes in that unit but I’ve hidden them in the rear ranks lol
Stunning looking army Leon, mate I think you’ve done an awesome job 👍😁 those flags certainly add to the aesthetics, thanks for showing them 👍
Thanks mate. I’m pleased they’re finished now 😂.
The work is truly astonishing and shows the hard work you put into it, great army mate!
Thanks buddy. 🙂
That is a stunning army. And nothing beats the feeling when you finish a project of that magnitude and get to set them all up. Well done mate, well done.
Thanks Tristan. It was hard going at the end. It’ll be a while before I feel like doing any more lol.
Outstanding painting. A really lovely army. very colourful.
Thanks Scotty. They’re a really striking looking army when they’re all together
A great looking mercenary band, Charles the Bold and Archduke Maximilian I von Habsburg would be very proud. Well done. How about some Swiss to chomp each other up! Great work and lovely to see projects complete. Thankyou for posting!
Thanks Andy. Yeah I was thinking that maybe the Perry’s mercenaries plastics could be a good pick to fight them.?
The cat is a wonderful addition. Beautiful work.
Thanks mate. Good to have some interesting things on bases
Just wonderful looking units. The Black Band looks menacing.
Thanks Buddy. I’m glad I decided to do one unit as the Black band. Adds something different to the army
Magnificent Leon. They have to see the field sometime when the madness is over
Thanks Dom. Yeah it’d be a shame for them to spend forever in a box after all the effort
This is brilliant Landknechts army. Well done .
Thanks I John
Exquisite army...thanks for sharing it as a whole. Great job, and im sure youre relieved to be moving on to other projects now as you say! Regards, Dan
Thanks Dan. Yes mate, definitely pleased to have them finished lol
Realy nice Leon, looks like a labour of love!. Enjoyed seeing this project progress.
Thanks Mate. I was struggling with the last pike block. Really had to force myself to finish them. So pleased I’ve finished now.
@@leont66wargaming31 Worth it in the end! It's going to be brilliant having it all layed out on the wargames table.
Definitely. If I ever get round to painting an opposition army lol
Stunning, amazing job brother, convinced me to buy the box for Empire Averlanders
Thanks buddy. Yeah I’m thinking something similar for my Empire army, I might even rebase these.
Hey Leon! I knew you'd done this video but I can't believe I've only just gotten around to watching it! My interest in mercenaries for my Wars of the Roses project has bled over into an interest In Swiss Mercenaries / Pikemen, Landsknechts, Burgundian Wars and The Italian wars...and I'm keen on starting a force. These are lovely mate - truly superb work! Any pointers for a beginner to look for inspiration re colours, uniforms and force composition for this period? Great work on these.
Hi mate. Thanks for that. I have to be honest and say I kinda just went for various colours to make them all look quite vivid and lots of stripes. I watched a few videos of what other people had done and copied them a bit as well. Sorry if this isn’t very helpful. I do have a video of how I went about painting them and my thought process behind it. Hopefully it might help a bit?
ua-cam.com/video/JQgGNtqwu3Y/v-deo.html
they're looking absolutely crackin, Leon! Really well done, mate.
Thanks buddy. I’m quite pleased with them.
Fantastic Leon! Big pat on the back for you 👍👍👍
Thanks mate. So pleased it’s over 🤣
These guys are awesome. Your right the flags bring it to life. And I love the cat on the command stand. Great work buddy.
Thanks Anthony. I’m pleased they’re finished at last. I couldn’t remember the name of your cat so he doesn’t have a name yet lol
Lol it is Beau and it’s a she. She was a bit of a rat catcher in her day. She is only 10. But one summer she eradicated 9 rats all brought and deposited on the window sill.
Lol. Cats are brilliant. I wish I could get one but my son is allergic to the fur. The cat on the base is now a girl called Beau and has replaced Rats for chickens lol
Lol cool man. Chicken is her favourite meat so to be with chickens is spot on lol.
Totally wonderful work Leon. Always inspiring painting and videos you make. 198 minis, the bases and the flags are so impressive. Works of art!
Thanks Frederick. I agree the flags really make a difference
These look amazing and I hate to say you have me interested in the period now!
Thanks buddy. Sorry to have put temptation in your way lol
They look spectacular, great job, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mark 🙂
Absolutely beautiful army Leon!! Wonderful work
Thanks Vic. Hope you’re doing good
Such a stunning army mate thats very incredible work
Thanks Justin. Hope you’re well mate.
A fantastic looking army! Their enemies shall fall before the brilliance of their painting!
Haha thanks buddy. Let’s hope they don’t suffer from new model syndrome and all get wiped out first battle lol
Amazing work. You are going to need a warrior priest or two, some flagellants maybe some halberdiers!
Thanks Peter. Lol, Yeah maybe a Steam Tank as well.
stunning collection
Thanks buddy
Very impressive army which looks good and is certainly colorful.👍
Thanks buddy 🙂
Stunning Leon, they look superb
Thanks mate
Top stuff mate, really well done
Thanks mate 🙂
Overall effect is magnificent sir!
Thanks buddy 🙂
Simply amazing work!
Thanks Tracy
Fantastic job, well done! Pronounced Arcebuus, I have one on my wall funnily enough.
Thanks Mat. Nice. Wish we could have stuff like that in the UK. Hope you’re well mate and recovered or recovering. Stay safe.
great army. I like your bright painting style
Thanks mate.
Well done mate, a very colourful and great looking army
Thanks buddy 🙂
They look absolutely fab mate, looking forward to seeing what your next project is??
Thanks mate. I’ve ordered it. Just waiting for it to turn up now.
Fantastic looking army Leon. You have excelled on the painting! I can't think of a more challenging army to paint. Well done, you must be very proud of them....but will they fight as good as they look? 😂🤣
Thanks mate. The last pike block was a real challenge. Had to really force myself to get it finished. Happy it’s over now lol. They might not fight at all unless I paint some opposition 😂
Very nice Leon great work on a huge project
Thanks buddy. Glad it’s done... for now
Awesome, what a great job onn that many miniatures.
Thanks buddy
Epic army, great work! Love it, well done!👍
Thanks buddy 🙂
Nice video. Also, these guys make excellent empire state troops for warhammer fantasy.
Thanks buddy. Yep definitely
You've well and truly nailed that mate :) a really interesting, varied and beautiful army! Looking forward to see what you get up to next
Thanks buddy. I’ve ordered a new project. Just waiting for it to turn up
Awesome job! I wish I had the endurance to do something like this. Btw. Love how you say Zweihänder😉
Lol. Thanks buddy
Stunning army!
Thanks mate
Mate, they are awesome. Well done.
Thanks Buddy
I've got a bunch of these put on GW bases. I'm making an Averland army with halfling allies.
Very nice. They do make great Empire troops. Have you seen the Mantic Halflings, tempted to get some
Outstanding work on them Leon. Probably not accurate for colours, but who gives a toss as they look fantastic as an army.
Thanks Ken. Yeah I don’t think they wore quite that array of colours. But as you say. Who cares. They’re my toys after all lol
Very cool!!! They look beautiful!!!!
Cheers mate 🙂
Cracking work mate, would make a great empire army
Thanks mate. Yeah I’ll probably use them for that lol
Fantastic work Leon, any cavalry coming, I know how much you enjoy painting cavalry, lol, all the best Garry
Thanks Garry. Lol I might just do one or two units of Cav. But my new project has arrived so that’ll take priority for now.
Fantastic Leon. The army looks superb.
Thanks Paul. Could the Perry’s Mercenary box set be used as Swiss Guard for this period ish.? (Asking for a friend)
@@leont66wargaming31 Up to a certain point mate. I think 1530 would be the cut off date as fashions were on the change again. Add some italian or swiss heads to give them a a better feel. The swiss guard are part of a Papal force so would be a unit in an Italian style army. Not exactly sure when the swiss guard came into being and may have just been mercenaries at this time. It's a difficult question really as to exactly how the swiss looked at this point. Not sure if they were still wearing Canton colours or individual dress and how much they would be influenced by italian French or German styles. At the end of the day I would happily use them up until at least Pavia with appropriate heads and painting style.
Thank you mate. I’ll copy this and pass it on. It’s Lee Hughes that’s wanting to do them. My knowledge on this is very limited. I knew you’d be the man to ask 🙂
@@leont66wargaming31 no worries mate. I know bits but it's a difficult period to be sure about as it was in continuous flux with changes taking place in the renaissance.
Thanks for the info Paul. I’m finding it difficult to discover how the Swiss looked in this period, so the Mercenary box set with Swiss heads is going to be the one for me. I’m also thinking mainly canton colours too if only because it would be quicker. F**k knows how Leon managed to paint these Landsknechts.
I’ve found some Swiss/Papal Guards by TAG, so I’ll add those to the horde and I’ll paint them in the modern colours even though it’s not accurate as it’ll make them stand out.
Wonderful work
Thanks Robin
U should be proud of that army, hope u do some Cavalry for it one day 😁
Thanks buddy. I’ll have to look into getting one unit of cavalry I think. It’d be a nice little addition
These look amazing
Thanks buddy 🙂
That’s an impressive looking army. Great job. 👍
Thanks buddy. 🙂
that's one nice looking army
Thanks buddy 🙂
Amazing army so much colour great job not sure I would have the patience
Thanks Chris. I felt the same towards the end
@@leont66wargaming31 it would be nice if you got se cavalry and another artillery piece for it I think just to tie it up and give it a more complete finish but up to you as you will be painting it and I don't envy you the task. Thanks for the showcase though as its amazing
Get some Perry miniature men at arms and you’ve got a nice empire proxy army for the old world!
Yes definitely
Awesome job!
Thanks 😊
WOW !!!!! awesome work
Thanks Chris
Very nice, now to the cavalry... :)
Thanks buddy. Haha yeah... I might have to look into getting one unit of Cav. It’d make a nice little addition
Hi Leon, been following your vblog since the Austrian army (loved that video series!) and now this what a beautiful looking army, inspiring stuff! Would you be uploading the videos of the painting of the Landsknechts into a video playlist? And do you have any "how to" painting a Landsknecht from scratch as it were? Cheers Mark
Thanks buddy. Yeah I’ll have to put all these videos into a playlist. I have done a start to finish video when I painted the first pike block. I go through my painting process in that one
@@leont66wargaming31 thanks Leon I just started watching that this evening. I liked the colour in groups idea and I know what it's like painting the same colour again and again especially on 20 to 30 figures!
Great job.
Thanks Tony
Fantastic work mate. These look awesome. You have to make sure you do something with these, it would be criminal if they just sit in a box and never see the light of day. What’s next now these are done?
Cheers mate. They might get used as a Empire army at some point.? Or I might paint up some of the Perry’s mercenaries as Swiss to fight them in the future.
I’m finishing off the 15mm Romans and Gauls I have in the mountain for now while I wait for my new project to turn up.
Well done! They look amazing! I heard you say before about an opposition for these fellas, what opposition choices have you been thinking about?. Again, well done mate! Take care!
Thanks Dan. I have some of the Perry’s mercenary minis. Was thinking of painting them up for the Italian wars maybe. It’ll be a while though before I face painting more pikemen lol.
Nice job 👍
Thanks buddy 😊
Wow that is really cool👍
Thanks buddy
And if you want to meet Leon his pole dancing act starts at 9pm Tuesdays / Thursdays weekly
Sometimes on a Friday too, depending how the other 2 days went
Fantastic stuff. Unfortunately I’ve taken an interest in this period, saw an episode of ‘Ancient Assassins’ a while ago about the Swiss Guard and it’s been in the back of my mind ever since. I just put together the free frame I had (mine was the missile troops) but looking at their outfits they look complicated, can’t figure out what half the stuff they’re wearing is supposed to be 😫. I’ve started looking at various manufacturers now 😭, looks like its inevitable. Wondering if I can use my Perry plastic sets of European Mercenaries as Swiss for this period, it would be the cheapest option...
Thanks Lee. They’re a real labour of love to paint. I batch painted mine and by the end even that had become tedious.
Check out a channel called “the Yarkshire gamer” he used the Perry’s for his Italian wars.
ua-cam.com/video/YB-J62KPJ68/v-deo.html
There’s a link for you.
I have them minis as well and will probably get round to them at some point
I’ll ask Paul Richardson about the Perry’s being used for Swiss if he drops a comment as well mate. He knows a lot about this stuff. I’ll give you a link to his channel if I can find it.
Thanks Leon, I subscribe to Paul’s channel already, he jumps from one thing to another almost as much as I do! Also already know of the Yarkshire Gamer, looking through his blog is where I first saw that Mercenaries box set being used for Swiss but I had the idea from reading the leaflet in the box too. Some gamers feel that the box set is too early for the period but it says its for up to 1500. I’m interested in the 1527 battle in particular and I’m thinking surely uniforms and equipment couldn’t have changed that much in 30 years? I’m thinking of buying some Swiss and European heads from Perry, sticking those on and calling that good enough. The Assault Group also have a big range and they have some actual Swiss Guard figures.
Really though, I should just stick to the Jacobite Rebellions which I just started 😔
Paul’s just left a reply on this video. I’ve tried to copy and paste but I can’t get it to work lol. Sorry you’ll have to trawl through time find it.
Looks like you’re on the right track with the heads from what he was saying.
I wouldn’t be to upset mate. You are a hobby butterfly. I wish in one way I was the same so I wouldn’t get so fed up of painting the same thing. The Other minis aren’t going anywhere so you’ll get round to them when the feeling/enthusiasm comes back.
It’s tough to complete a project. The last pike block for these guys was a real struggle. I consoled myself by adding a new project to my mountain. My pile of minis gets reduced today but increases again when the postman turns up lol.
Thanks mate, just replied to his comments.
Don’t know how you managed to paint this lot and have them look so amazing. Not sure I’ll ever attempt them but the Swiss will need some opponents and this does look like a great box set....
Look forward to seeing what you’ve got from the postie.
Amazing work! Paint an opposing force!!! :D
Thanks Phil. Lol maybe in the future
Stunning army!!!....i just got hold of a box recently and was wondering how you did the flags btw?
Thanks buddy.
The flags are from flags of war.
Here’s a link to a video on how I put them on and shape them.
ua-cam.com/video/kGqDWJNPHiY/v-deo.htmlsi=ZQbicKEWZ4_-gEvj
Beautiful army, do you think these could be used alongside other GW models in an empire army? Hard to gauge if 28mm will look strange next to GW's 28mm heroic scale
Thanks buddy. It’s tricky to say for sure. My feeling is they’ll be a bit small compared to GW models.
I watched the short video on the Kislev and Cathy armies the other day. Really looking forward to the new Fantasy. I have a feeling it’s going to bankrupt me hahaha.
@@leont66wargaming31 That's exactly why I was looking for cheaper alternatives LOL. Haven't been this excited for a miniature game in a while. Hopefully they can really come out with a tight ruleset
WOW m8 .....Brilliant.
Thanks Nik. So glad it’s over
Amazing work Leon! Love them! Are you planning to command them in battle..? 😂
Thanks Nik. I’m thinking of painting up some of the Perry’s miniatures I have now to fight them 😂. But first something different or I’ll go mad.
A period I have no interest in whatsoever but Magnificent work there young fella. Must be as bad (if not worse) as painting an entire Napoleonic Army of Highlanders. I take it the Pikeman could have either crossbow or arquebus armed infantry as part of the formation? Gr8 stuff.
Not really a period I was interested in either lol. I got the box for my Birthday from my kids so needed to get it painted so I could get more toys this year hahaha. Yeah I’ve painted some highlanders. I think in the early renaissance period they still used crossbows but they were phased out over time as the guns got more reliable.
Awesome! subbed.
Thanks buddy 🙂
Absolute stunning. Wow! May I ask how you did the bases?
Thanks Chris.
I took a bit of time on these bases. Firstly I used filler/spakle. Painted it yellow ochre. Applied a watered down Agrax wash. Then dry brushed yellow ochre. I then added some geek gaming scenics Mediterranean basing and then a few tufts
@@leont66wargaming31 absolute worth it. Thank you so much for the detailed info
@@sooutofhere No worries mate, just to add, I didn't put the geek gaming stuff all over the bases, just picked out a few areas for it at random
im painting a somewhat bigger army than that, so if you dont mind im gonna copy some of the briliant paint schemes i see in this army ;)
Nice one mate. Copy away my friend
VERY NICE!! HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO PAINT THEM ALL
Thanks Andy, i think it took about 4 months in total
IVE JUST RESTARTED. IVE GOT PTSD FRPM TIME SERVED IN THE FORCES. AND MY THERA[IST TOLD ME TO TAKE UP PAINTING. SO HERE I AM!
Good stuff brother I find when I’m painting I can zone out from the world. Put some tunes on and just sit and chill.
Great looking army Leon, Who are they going to fight?
Thanks mate. Now that is the question. For now they’ll just have to fight amongst themselves lol
Cat-holics?
Hahaha. Love it
What rule set are these based for?
Hi buddy. I don’t have a particular rules set in mind at the moment. I have been told “beneath the Lilly banners” is a good one. I’ll probably just write my own rules in the end
@@leont66wargaming31 this is a period that sometimes is hard to get right. Best of luck to you and keep up the good painting.
Thanks buddy.
