Hi James, sorry to hear about the smart playing up. Funnily enough, I had the same issue when I purchased mine years ago. It did it on the way home at the petrol station 2 mins after buying it 200miles from home.. Turned out the sensor was loose! They are a bit prone to sensors playing up and then 'computer says no'. 30k after it is fine... As.you say, they are an 18 year old car and well out of warranty, so replacing a few bits is to be expected.
Worth a go. Seem to remember it wasn't too bad to get at with a few bits removed. But when you get that far and have the part it was worth changing it as I'm sure you will anyway. I know you love a private seller tale. I rang the guy I bought it from when this happened literally ten mins after rather than call the AA - just to ask if he'd had this before and if there was a work around (not to moan, I knew I had no rights...). He told me a tale about his garage saying if something like this ever happened to wiggle a certain area of wiring... 2 mins later and a wiggle in the right place and I was on my way! A known fault at sale I'm sure, but those are the risks. Buying from a good dealer like you who always goes the extra mile would have been worth the small extra!
Sniff, easy starts a big no, no, I used some years ago on a petrol car, diesels not too bad, the explosion was so violent that the cam belt stripped and every valve right over, not just kissed the valves but bent them right over, ended up scrapping the car, any problems, plug the scanner in St away.

I took it to school on Tuesday but had to drive uphill in first. That evening I set off with my granddad to pick up my dad in Glasgow but never got there as the clutch burnt out on the motorway. One of my uncles towed us back. Took it back on Wednesday morning and got a refund. A shock entry to the world of driving.
