How to load an Instamatic camera using an old catridge: www.photothink...
I bought the FAKMATIC catridge from here (in the US): filmphotograph...
You can buy it in Europe, here:

One trick I learned was to tape a matchstick to the other end of the film. That way, when the film is finished, you will feel resistance in the wind on lever.
This is a great idea!
@@edpavez I know people find it too much like hard work but as well as having a 56x, I also have an Instamatic 500. With a variable focus, 38mm f/2.8 lens it's a completely different beast. Want to shoot square with full manual control? f/2.8 - f/22 and 1/30 to 1/500 + bulb. Can also be had at silly low prices. That's what made me persevere a bit more with loading. Another tip is that a 24xp roll of film will fit perfectly in the take up chamber. 36 won't roll down small enough, but 24 is fine so if you don't roll your own film, you can take any roll of 24xp film and unroll it in the dark bag.
Hey Eduardo,
What scanner world you say it’s worth to look at to scan the film to digital?
@@Harlequin565hey!!
I purchased an instamatic 500, and I already had an FAKMATIC from a few years ago. Unfortunately, I am having trouble getting the FAKMATIC to work with the camera. The winding gear isn't tall enough to engage with the spool, and so it won't wind. Do you use the FAKMATIC, and if so, how did you deal with this issue?
@@purple-flowers Hi there. I use the Cameradactyl Fakmatic and have had no issues as long as you make sure the spool is the right way round (you can fit it upside down). I have to be honest though, I use a cracked original 126 can most of the time as I find it easier to handle in the dark bag.
Indeed, this is the camera I've inherited from my grandma, who sadly passed away few months ago, so this video has been like finding a treasure for me. Now I know how to use it and take pictures around the world with the memory of my grandma with me. I'm deeply grateful for your help! ✨
me too , today I found this camera at my grandpa house, i was searching a tv control which also gift me (he's blind)
and found 2 cameras today: this one and an rodestock, my god those cameras are beautiful. I don't know if he could gift me (for me it's too much with the TV) but I need to take pictures (always I've been wishing for a polaroid, instamax it's kinda nearly, 'cause the film and vintage style), not only photos for me, for him.
This seems like a lot of effort for this camera. As always very interesting!
I was recently viewing some Kodachrome slides taken on a 126 instamatic back in the 80’s. The quality of the lenses is surprisingly good 👍🏼. Well worth a play
The overlap is due to the sprocket holes, the original film had one per frame, can’t remember exactly how many but it’s something like one every five regular ones. I’m impressed by the effort you’re willing to put in with something this basic, I know I wouldn’t.
My first camera was an Instamatic 300 - and I still have it 57 years later! I think you might have convinced me to have a go at using it again. I have scanned some of the slides I shot, and am impressed with the quality - maybe it has a better lens than yours?
It's a fun camera. I used to buy some with left over film. I shot until all exposed. Then developed it and it was interesting to have someone's pictures decades ago with my freshly shots on the same roll. Anyway there was base fog due to the age of the film.
I just bought this camera at a thrift store and it already had 5 photos on it, I can't wait to see what they are
You can reuse it right? By changing the film?
@@sakshii7826 Yes but this film format is no longer produced.
I'm honestly surprised Lomography hasn't picked up this format, there seems to be a huge market for it. Sure with a lot of the 126 cameras mercury batteries depleted, and a majority of the Instamatics that used the format breaking down, the market is shrinking, but at the same time, they could market their own 126 cartridges and cameras like they do their 110 "baby Diana" cameras and cartridges.
Thank you for this great video. It's way better than mine in showing how the cartridge works. I really like the low-fi look and the overlapped scenery, but there still are some very capable instamatic cameras out there 😉
The pictures you takes in this are beautiful. I like the constrast and the color.
Thank you for making this! I thrifted a instamatic 233 Kodak camera for 2€ today and I hope I'll manage to do all of this since I've never shot anything with "real" film before!
in what link did u find it?
This was my first camera I got new all those years ago when I was a kid.
Dude!! my best friend just gave me one !! and I did not know how to use it, this is great, thank you very much! and what a beautiful joliette shirt! i love that band
Oh my goodness thank you❤️ I have two the 233 and 155x instamatic camera by Kodak both my mothers. I looked around all the camera shops asking if you could get something to make them work and the answer was always no.
The 133X was my first camera, 50 years ago. I still have it but I'm not keen to try it again! The pictures were very soft.
i have two of these cartridges on my camera shelf. i'm very tempted now! found them on the street some day. nice joliette shirt btw. saw them a few years back here in hamburg. big fan, love your videos! always a very comfortable mood.
Is it worth it? I think the general rule applies that if you have fun doing it regardless of results it is worth it.
Loved the tutorial! Just had a quick question. Does it matter what tape we tape we use for loading the film?
Not at all. Just make sure it’s not too flimsy. :)
Ohh, cuantos recuerdos.
If you ever want help filming around nyc/brooklyn, I'd be happy to lend a hand.
My first camera was a Kodak 126 I bought it at K-Mart for something like $25-$30, it used the 126 film, the body was mostly metal and it used flash cubes. In today's dollars that's about $190.00 ($25 adjusted). It came with a black case. My next Camera was an Argus-Cosina with a 50mm lens, I think an STL 1000, it cost much more, at least $500 in today's money, probably more like $550-600.
Encontré muy cool las imágenes 👌🏻
Good video and it is nice learning about your work.
But...
... where is your shop?
I closed it. Shipping was getting too expensive.
I got an instamatic 224. Do I need a battery to take pictures ? I feel like I don't
I have 3 rolls of 126 film sitting in my freezer. They've been there for over a decade. I first started taking pics back in the 80's with 110 and 126 film but moved on to 35mm and then ultimately digital. I throw nothing away and still have the cameras.
Thank you 😊 Do you know if I can use an old expired film and then i can reuse the black part, instead of buying the adapter?
Cant't complain that you tried something different. I would just shoot a Holga if your going for the "lomo look" and their easy and readily available with film. Not that you didn't already know that.
i tried this once, everything was mostly out of focus and the frames all overlapped but it looked nice. i just attached a 35mm can to the advance using a paper clip somehow and wound the film back into the can.
If I want to send the film to be developed as I don't have a darkroom, would it be possible with this way of unloading?
is the film not ruined because exposure to loghty
Love the videos
I´ve been searching info about it and someone, I dont remember who or where, said that the pictures tend to lay over te other, like a doble exposure. ¿Is that true? ¿Someone knows?
What film do u use and what type
is a really bad option to use an expire 126 film? i mean does it work? how the photo is gonna look? just wanna use the camera for fun and take random pictures like you did. thanks
But where will you develop 126 film? You would have to buy special stuff to develop it yourself. And the 126 film has been expired for decades and for sure in horrible storage conditions. Even if you ever get to find some, the results would be terrible. Get the adaptor and use 35mm. It’s simpler, cheaper and you can get predictable results.
@@edpavez hi was just wondering does that work on the 133x Kodak one
@@mischaturner7627 the 133x is the camera I use in this video.
I want someone to love me the way that Ed loves turtles😩🐢
PARA USARLA ¿NO NECESITAS UNA PILA?
That's great ...very interesting 🙂
Hello this camera needs a battery????
Nope
Does ıt need battery or completly analog
no batteries needed, but you need to be able to measure light using your phone or a light meter, so you know the aperture needed.
My first camera :-)
Hahah. Las tortugas son lo mejor!
Definitely picked up mine from a second hand store..........
Nice. A camera that you can still find at the goodwill for .99
Even "Smena-8m" looks way better instamatic
Fackmatic should sell the cartridge with the film already inside!!!!
It was my first one, and all these decades and lots of cameras later, still one of the crappiest I've ever know
Joliette ❤️
a step up from a holga - almost like a pin hole camera?
very interesting - "ARTISTIC" lol

You need a lot of light with an instamatic camera.
Nice!!! From Brazil What yout ig
1971 allover again
Weeell.. pretty rough results and a lot of effort eh?
Once you have all the elements, the effort is not as big. But yeah, it’s quite an investment for little return. I’m glad I did it so other people know what to expect.
So much love, it seems to me, in your videos, that just kind of shines through. Never had one of those cameras but you did get some nice results with it. Definitely worthwhile.
