Railroad Crossings of Madison County, AL
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 жов 2024
- Decided to compile this video since I've been able to record each and every public signalized crossing in the county, of which there are 42 of. Each crossing will have the road name, along with the town it's located in, and the reporting mark of the railroad that owns the crossing.
The reason why I specified PUBLIC signalized crossings is that behind a plant near Slaughter Road, there is a private crossing with gateless signals. Zooming in with my camera on the crossing from Slaughter Road shows that it has what appears to be Safetran 12x20 inch lights and a Safetran mechanical bell. However, as I'm not able to access it, I didn't include it in this video.
Also, since Huntsville is the largest city in the county (and thus the county seat), most of the crossings featured will be from within the city of Huntsville.
A few more things of note:
The vast majority of the crossings in the county (33/42; thanks to NS) use incandescent lights.
Just under half of the crossings in the county (20/42) use mechanical bells.
Just over half of the signalized crossings in the county (23/42) are gateless as well.
Madison County, AL actually has four different railroads within it, one Class I railroad (NS) and three shortlines (HMCR, HMCAA, and the M&C), however, the last one, the Mercury & Chase (M&C), doesn't have any signalized crossings along it anymore, so it isn't shown in this video.
Lights shown in the video:
WRRS (8 inch)
WCH (12x20 inch, 12x24 inch; 3rd Generation, 4th Generation)
Safetran (8 inch, 12x20 inch, 12x24 inch; Older-style, Hawker Siddeley, Newer-style)
RACO (8 inch)
Federal Signal (8 inch, 12x20 inch)
Modern Industries (12x20 inch, 12x24 inch; 2nd Generation, 3rd Generation)
Harmon (8 inch, 12x24 inch; Older-style; Newer-style)
Bells shown in the video:
Safetran (mechanical, Type-2 electronic, Type-3 electronic)
WCH (1st Generation mechanical, 2nd Generation mechanical, electronic)
Modern Industries (mechanical)
Federal Signal (mechanical)
General Signals (Type-1 electronic, Type-2 electronic)
RACO (mechanical, dead)
WRRS (mechanical)
LEDs:
Harmon (12 inch; Dotted, Fading)
WCH (8 inch, 12 inch; 1st Generation; 2nd Generation)
Dialight (12 inch)
Gate mechanisms:

Madison Alabama nice video truck trailers keep up the good work and be careful out there flim awesome frieght trains untied states
Thanks!
Love the second one
The horn perfect
Beautiful P5 just at the start!
At 1:00:42 I get why you said "WOAH!" That gate needs repairing.
BTW when I said "LEDs fading on and off while the crossing is active" I meant during the flash sequence they will get dimmer and dimmer until they are off then slowly get brighter and brighter until they are fully on. Not fading at the end of the light "on" period. Get what I mean?
At 1:18:07 why did the bell sound again when the gate raised?
At 1:29:29 does the left hand signal have two working bulbs?
What you're describing with the "fading" of the lights is purely an effect from my camera caused by its frame rate and how rectified DC electricity tends to work. They don't do that IRL, at least not in a way that's visible to the naked eye.
Nice catches of the trains.
Thanks!
freebrickproductions Your welcome.
Nicely done!
Thanks!

The good news is that it's been repaired for a while now, though it still has issues:
ua-cam.com/video/s0NsKZHzOjc/v-deo.html
Again, the LED's "fading" is due to the camera, not the crossing. The LEDs themselves operate like any other LED in real life.
***** I see what you mean.
Sorry, I am constantly updating my comment a I watch the video.
1:18:07 - That's how NS set-up most of their new crossing installs from the 1980s to the early 1990s.
1:29:29 - Yes, yes it does. However, the right-hand light wasn't very visible due to the angle of the lens relative to where my camera was.
***** OK. Also, I was wondering what controls the gate lights to flash in sync with the main signals as they are on the same wire. Here in the UK all the gate lights come on when the first gate starts to lower. [steady on] Then they go out again when all the gates are fully raised.
That's got to be a lot of crossings in one area!
There's over 2,000 crossings in Alabama alone, according to the FRA. The Birmingham Metro Area probably has the most out of any one specific area in the state.
*****
There's more than 1800 crossings in Victoria. Around 170 of which are in urban Melbourne...
@@TrickyMario7654 Dude: Victoria -- 227,600 sq kms
Alabama -- 133,915 sq km
It sounds like that horn is always used on the NorthFo
lk Southern Engines at 0:1 particularly on those specific engines
It’s a ns sd40-2
From 20:11-22:19 how the hell do they not have crossing gates at that RR Crossing on such an obvious busy main road!?!? They're just asking for trouble!!!
The HMCR doesn't like to use gates. And, believe it or not, there hasn't ever been a single accident at that crossing, at least since the FRA started recording them (which I believe was back in the 1960s or so).
Which parts of this long video have a WRRS High Pitched Mechanical Bell or a P5 besides 0:00
12:45 I'm telling you dude if you want the engineer and conductor to see you, you gotta wave a little bit earlier. Try to wave when the nose of the leading engine is around 20-40 ft from you. Trust me, they'll either see you and wave, see you and give you a horn show, see you and do both, or see you and ignore you. I've had the experience. Just giving you some advice lol

1:07 What's that horn? One of my favorite crossings in this video too.
K3LA or K3HA, I believe?
@@freebrickproductions Ok yes it is a k3ha.
Cool vid. I thought that the lights at 23:57 were incandescent. Not LEDs. Also, Why do the LEDs fade on and off when the crossing activates? And at 27:30 that is a tiny bell.
At 39:20 LOL malfunction!
At 49:56 Why did the train go into reverse?
Thanks!
The lights at 23:57 fade due to my camera's frame rate having trouble capturing the LEDs. They used to all be incandescent, but the signal on the right was knocked down and replaced as nothing could be salvaged from the old signal.
The bell at 27:30 is a standard Safetran mechanical bell mounted on the relay case.
The train at 49:56 was switching the Huntsville International Airport Intermodal Terminal.
***** Thanks for the info. I will continue watching the vid now. Dentist sucks. :(
Travis Bare Why? Just Why?
George Munks Fire alarms and trainspotting Eh, he was just a bad troll, so I just decided to block him outright.
***** good. Ever thought of visiting Plant City, Florida? The crossings there have strangely operating quad-arms.
26:23 I know that that’s a K5LA right?
yes
1:22:10 was that Conrail 8098 and a killer RS5K

BEST VIDEO AMAZING TRAIN CARGO!!!!!

I love the horn 30:14
Yea, RS5Ts just sound awesome.
At 100:34 why did the gate just bounce when it went down that was crazy
The gate mech was broke.
27:24... I hear bells but don't see any!
It's on the relay case on the right.
44:24 55:55 same horn
That's because its the same train
Same train dude..
Did you get a chance to eat at the Main Street Cafe? The one RIGHT NEXT TO THE TRACKS in Madison?
Been meaning to, but have not sadly.
They need to replace that gate mechanism on Derrick street
It was fixed, and the signal has since been replaced with one from Belle Mina, AL.
not noted but,,,,this is the first rr west of the smokie mountains and still on the same grade. Lotsa traffic between memphis and knoxville. huntsville ala, and chattanooga, bridgeport, stevenson, decatur, florence, and points west.....no telling how many tons hauled there. Civil war was important to the trains also
Technically, that was the part of the Memphis District between Tuscumbia and Decatur that was the first railroad west of the Smokies (and even then, that's technically preceded by an even earlier railroad built between Tuscumbia and the Tennessee River).
@@freebrickproductions yep but same grade, same cities. The section past florence was built before tva dams and was to get freight past muscle shoals. The tenn river was sooo shallow there that barge and steam boat freight couldnt get over the shoals. So boats unloaded onto wagons and went overland to be reloaded once again on other steam boats or barges to continue. I remember my dad telling as a kid if they went to florence from the south side, the river was sooo shallow that it only came to about axle depth on a farm wagon, and mules had an easy crossing on the muscle shells under their feet.
1:00:29 WOAHHHH
Does anybody happen to know how old the Church St crossing is in Madison
I'm guessing the signals were installed in the 1960s at the latest with the lights, bell, and gate mechs being replaced in the 1980s.
What about the Sullivan St crossing what replaced it ?
Zachary Poole Probably a 1990s install.

Is this video in 4K UHD?
No. I don't even have a camera capable of recording that, I believe.
@@freebrickproductions Oh. Then why is it so HD-like?
@@4funJust4you Because it was recorded in 1080p (30fps though), as that's what I usually always record in these days. (Only exceptions are for stuff I record on my Canon, which only shoots in a maximum of 720p for videos.)
@@freebrickproductions I see. You know, 4K Ultra HD was released around late 2016. It's like Blu-ray Disc but with more lighting quality.
Nastiest train horn I ever heard

At 1:00:42, that gate could have broke!

How so?
Sounds like a play on the title of the novel and movie, "Bridges of Madison County" :)
