i wonder why since i was a little boy i always find rail way crossings so fascinating..we didn't have a car but sometimes my aunt would take her car and sit by a crossing for up to an hour and wait for a train to pass so i could see it..all these years later i still enjoy crossings and r.i.p to my long departed aunt for being such a kind lady

Love the video. I have a place known as Girard, IL. And it is an excellent place for railfanning! One side of the road is the Joilet sub, and the other is some BNSF line (which they cross over a diamond).
At 3:10, it says the railroad crossing is a private crossing. That means the crossing is on private property, but you noticed that the private railroad crossing is equipped with gates and lights. That's great! No matter if it's a public or private railroad crossing, every driver needs to have a warning or an indication that a train is approaching.

joethenark my town in Louisiana only has one signal on both sides. 4/7 of those are gateless cantilevers backed up by regular signals with gate motors behind them. the rest are standard signals with gate motors. overall they all have the best gs bell: the type 1 tuned to sound like a type 2. pretty cool. only trains we get through here are KCS, KCSM, UP, and NS. VERY FEW IC trains pass through here.
I liked all. Best one, is when gates are down, the bells stop. Lights keep flashing. Some signals have a strobe like effect as the lights alternate left and right.

Thanks for uploading. This brings back memories going back (for me) to the late 1950's. Of course, the system was in place in one form or another earlier than that.
But they come down all together, that is risky if some vehicle enters it and it starts closing, the gates in the incoming traffic should close first, and after a few seconds the other 2 (exits) so vehicles can go escape if they are already in
In the UK most of our level/railway/railroad crossings have full barriers. Left lowers first (UK drive on left) and then once they are fully down the right ones lower. Most UK crossings are operated by a signaller

Australia has every bell from here but they are only missing the NEG e bell.

I grew up in Burbank, IL, about 45 minutes away from the Joliet Sub via I-80. I'd love to see some railroad crossings there. There's a crossing near Cicero and Southwest Highway that might be interesting to railfans.

The train drivers in Japan don’t even honk. I live near a rail road crossing and it’s always nice when it goes down, I know the trains schedule so I sometimes watch it
Very cool. Have you ever gone to the I.C.G. line? In Monee it present have crossing gates and lights. Because it passes thru Monee in the Cut. The trains are below grade and pass under the bridges. You go and stand over the tracks and face the train as it goes under you. Gives a great shot of AWESOME you feel as if the train will hit you. It is a spectacular experience. I used to live there right along the Cut. The trains would blow their horns when a person is over the tracks. Monee is my home town and I miss it. Check it out sometime it's a great rush.

This line probably has cab signal requirements now, since Amtrak is going above 80 MPH (which is the limit at which cab signals are required on a train). It's the reason why Amtrak only goes at 79 MPH through Bessemer, AL.

And the gates should not close all together, they should first close the ones in the incoming traffic,then the "exit" ones after a few seconds, so cars can get out even if they entered while the gate was closing.
All 4 gates descend at the same time, which is out of order. A vehicle on the crossing would have no way to escape, that is why the 4 quadrant gates are sequenced to allow escape. The fact that there is a Stop sign just 50 feet from the crossing means that vehicles could get backed-up on the crossing with no where to go when the lights start flashing. These crossings with a Stop sign on a busy highway are, in reality, Death Traps. When vehicles are bumper to bumper, as often happens at rush hours, it would be easy to get trapped on this crossing.

They did that to make this line 110 mph capable. So far trains haven't gone through there at 110, but hopefully soon.

That black SUV must have been driven by a railfan. Most people would not stop and reverse when they saw the lights at the crossing.
