Knowing Squidward, he probably brushed this off initially, but then went home and spent a good thirty minutes looking himself in the mirror, questioning all of his life choices.
"That fish was right, I guess I am being a bit too hard on others. It's not about my art, my music, none of that. It's my behaviour. Alright Squiddy, about time you put an end to this self-ruining act. Starting tomorrow will be a new me. If I ever see that fish again, I'll thank him for everything he told me today." -Squidward, probably.
As a child you dislike squidward because he's mean to spongebob. As an adult you realize that he's mean to everyone and needs someone to say this to him
though to be fair, squidward has a lot of reasons to be the way that he is. He literally is trapped dealing with 2 idiots who've sent him to the hospital on multiple occasions 24/7. He gets paid peanuts, his rival who goes out of his way to humiliate and degrade him is living his dream life whilst squidward is having to work as a hospitality worker. He's constantly the butt of every joke, he rarely gets moments of happiness and everytime he lashes out, even if it's truly reasonable of him to, he gets punished for it in the end. squidward doesn't just have a bad life, he's in hell. He can never escape, nobody respects him, he can never make his life better cause it just turns against him inevitably and most of the time he just has to take it whilst constantly being burdened with spongebob's nonsense who mind you, breaks into his house on the regular basis and annoys him like a literal child but of course he's the nice one because he says hi to people. Try appreciating his greeting after having to spend 20 years putting up with his shenanigans, spongebob's existence gave his DRIVING TEACHER PTSD!!!! he is the lapdog to the scummiest crustacean to ever exist in the bottom of the ocean that his greed hilariously outweighs the embodying sin of greed mammon's own selfishness. christ, mammon from the helluva boss series is partly inspired by mr krabs and if it wasn't already confirmed, it wouldn't shock anyone to be the case and squidward has to work under him, he gets fined for breathing and existing in his restaurant and was almost murdered by krabs so that he could sell his artwork for easy money. squidward has every reason to be an asshole, it's lucky thats all he is. It just shows how much more patient squidward is cause for literally ANYONE else to put up with so much grief and loneliness, they'd become a serial killer.
Squidward: "Have you been dealt with being fined by your boss for breathing, having that same boss tried to kill you for extra cash, constantly dealing with two idiots that break into your house everyday who also destroy it every week, been brain damage by those idiots to the point that you're mentally a baby? No? Then Order your food sir"
Frankie: “🤦♂️😤😮💨 Ok Squidward… So would you like to tell me that having a REALLY rough, miserable life - something that *TONS* of us suffer from in one way or another - automatically gives you the right to treat other people like utter garbage even if they’ve done nothing to deserve that kind of treatment? Y’know, sorta like how *_you_*_ never deserved to be shit on so much in _*_your_*_ life?_ Have you ever considered for just a second that maybe, JUST MAYBE, that the reason the world seems so terrible and mean to you is because of people like you who continue the cycle of generational trauma and living by a principle of “my life sucks, therefore I get to make sure other people’s lives suck too”? Please think about it, Squidward. Because at the end of the day, you are not alone in your suffering and it only makes everything worse for everyone (including yourself) to act like you’re superior or are suffering more than any of us.” Squidward: *insert another “””genius””” snarky reply or another sad self-pitying rant here* Frankie: “Thank you for your service, Squidward. And I hope you have a pleasant day and that things get better for you some day. I really do. Oh and hi SpongeBob! I look forward to seeing you at my sister’s wedding next week!”
Ya know I always hear people say that they didn't get Squidward as a kid until they grew up and got a similar job, then they understood him. But I feel like this is basically sort of a great summary of why we understand but also criticise Squidward. Speaking as a Retail worker myself. I understand where Squidward comes from. There have been plenty of days where work just sucks or constantly gets on your nerves be it due to customers or what your job demands of you, and sometimes your job expects too much out of one person, and depending on the pay it gets frustrating and miserable. I understand that fully. But the one thing you should never ever do, is take it out on others ESPECIALLY your customers. Customers can be fickle and annoying and there are the cases where they are just jerks. But you never take your misery out on them, because for the ones that aren't jerks, they don't know what you're going through, they don't know what the problem is. They're just there to do what they need to do and go. They are the ones that come in and pay for the stuff you sell, so by and large they are the reason you get a paycheck. As such, you have to try your hardest to be respectful as possible. Don't get me wrong there are ones that are mean and times when even your bosses will agree they are jerks, but sometimes the best thing to do is to just try and be nice or not say anything. Cause half the time it'll come back on you. It's not about changing minds or anything, it's about making yourself look good and keeping your job so you can earn cash and pay for food and bills. I have no doubt in my mind that if Squidward were to work in a place similar to the Krusty Krab, but it was more like our world, he would be fired in possibly a week or two because of his general attitude and customers complaints because of his comments and just being a general grouch. Again I get where he's coming from and nobodies perfect, trust me I've had my fair share of complaints and junk, but at the end of the day if it's about what matters more to you, and being able to earn my own money and pay for the things I need matters more than whatever annoying thing a customer does or whatever my job does. At least until I can get a better job anways.
@ Yeah I know, I was just referencing that old "Red Mist" creepypasta. I wouldn’t do this for an actual continuation. I’d want Squidward to actually reflect on himself and on what this guy told him.
This rant really works for episodes when Squidward is just grouchy for no reason, but falls flat for episodes where the entire town just lives to torture this man.
I really try to emulate a little spongebob in my everyday, because the last thing I want is to grow old and bitter to every inconvenience. There is real power in a kind attitude when faced with meanness or rudeness. It has gotten to the point where I don't even notice when people are being mean or brushing me off because i always have empathy for others to consider what they might have going on. Or I just don't hold on to baggage about a customer, there's always another face to greet. People have thanked me for just being myself and that made me realize what a joy it is that living honestly and lovingly can do that for people. All this to say, i'm sorry you're having a bad day squidward. Let me get you a lemonade.
Honestly, this builds a character, not to squidward, but to the fish. Makes him memorable instead of just one random background gag character. Love it.

What? The town loves Spongebob. He's good friends with most of the citizens unless they're just straight up evil or are Mrs. Puff. Even Squidward secretly cares for Spongebob This is just blatantly false
@Lonk2976 No, it isn't. There's a literal holiday dedicated to getting away from him for an entire day. His former classmate moved locations when SpongeBob called him to get away from him. SpongeBob isn't widely loved by everyone in Bikini Bottom. Everyone tolerates him at worst.
