So Jim Belushi as The Mutant is great, but Adam West as the Galloping Gazelle is what really sells this game for me. Holy Goosebumps, Batman! (I have no shame.)
@@EpicMickey777 True, although at least in this game he’s not as cowardly or wimpy as in the TV series or the original book. In the latter two, the Mutant kidnaps GG in order to lure Skipper (the protagonist) back into the Mutant’s lair; Skipper manages to rescue GG, and together they go after the Mutant, but after being tripped by the Mutant during a whirlwind attack (and, in the book, being faced with a leopard-Mutant), GG suddenly bails and leaves Skipper to fend for himself against the Mutant.
See, games like this are the definition of "so cheesy/bad that it's actually good". They've got a certain charm to them. I really think you should play more games like this. And I'm down with you reading your stories.
I had the Escape from Horrorland game as a kid and it scared me and my sister so much! We got stuck in the mummy's tomb as we were too scared to move forward. I finally finished it like a decade later lol. I've never played this one, but I liked the episode they did based on the book.
Oh, man... When you uploaded the Jumpstart 4th grade game the other day, I immediately thought of this game and how I was so scared as a child I couldn't play for more than a few minutes. Now that I think about it, Goosebumps always scared me. Thanks for playin' this!
i feel so old. And goosebump wasn't that famous in Italy, so i'm like an old hipster granny: "i used to watch it before it got famous". Lovely game, a trip in nostalgia land.
Oh my god, I also used to write shitty Goosebumps & Fear Street rip-offs as a kid. One was about a killer carrot who "murdered my family." R.L. Stine really hadn´t a good influence on me. :D Anyway, a reading of your own stories would be hilarious!
XRosellaX It's OK - I wrote one story that spawned three sequels, about a jack-o-lantern headed monster. It was very heavily inspired by Night of the Living Dummy - one night the dad brought home a pumpkin for Halloween, to turn into a jack-o-lantern. Then that night, the pumpkin came to life and tried to murder everyone. Only the main character could see the pumpkin for what it really was: evil! Basically exactly the same plot as Night of the Living Dummy, except instead of a dummy it was a fucking pumpkin. Another NotLD ripoff I made was almost exactly the same plot, except it was a Mr. Potato Head instead. I believe I titled it "The Evil Mr. Potato Head". I wish I were kidding. The most shameless one I wrote was called "Worms Everywhere!" that was a one-page version of Stine's "Go Eat Worms". I also wrote one about a shrunken head, one about vengeful lawn gnomes and one about a nocturnally locomotive scarecrow - all of which were based off popular Goosebumps books that you'll probably be able to identify just based on those descriptions. I should really start up a new series and read all of them, with interjected analysis. They are fascinatingly terrible.
4:24 Oh yeah, let’s just _head inside_ the place where you know that there’s at least five bad guys, waiting for some superheroes to show up to try and tear them apart. What could *_possibly_* go wrong?
Never played this but I remember a trailer for it running on loop in a video game store when I was a kid and thinking it looked so so cool. Thanks for the nostalgia hit John!
dude, you have no idea how much i appreciate you uploading this. you ran into the SAME EXACT issue i had with the comic that ive spent almost an hr trying to figure out. thank you so much!!! i had no idea u could rekey these controls
This is the real deal? When I saw an advert of it I thought it was a satire, since I never saw a real copy of the game back when I was a kid. Damn, I missed out. And holy uncanny valley everyone! I don't remember everyone looking like an animated blow-up doll.

update: thank you again for uploading this. couldnt actually finish the game, so my stream watched ur walkthrough. thanks for putting such a wild game on the internet for everyone to see!
Ok lets see if I can remember where all the costume pieces are from where I was a kid... 1. The shirt, or maybe it was the cape, can be found at the very beginning of the game, when you go into the hedge maze to escape Rootrot. You have to look around for it to find it, but it's there. If you go back later in the game I think it's gone, so if you want it you have to look around the first time. 2. You can find another piece if you use the key earlier on to go inside that room with the giant fan (on the same floor with the juice box and printer). If you go further into it than he did, you'll see there is a system of air vents you can go into and somewhere deep in their is the piece. Be careful because it's crawling with responing monsters. 3 and 4. In the event that you see two elevators open instead of just one, one of those elevators will take you to a secret floor, either a red sifi floor or a green dungeon floor. Somehow he managed to miss the floors each time in this video, but if you go in the elevator he didn't you should make it there. Both floors have a blaster you can use, but it disappears when you leave. The red floor has a piece hidden past a platform puzzle, and the green floor has a piece hidden behind a prison cell you have to use a sarcophagus to open. 5. The boots are in the hidden ice dungeon room, like you saw him get. 6. The mask (final piece if you get them all at the earliest point possible) is hidden around the frog level. I think that's where all the pieces are, note that I haven't played this game since I was a kid so I might have forgotten something.
I had a great time watching this, John. It's pretty hilarious. It's a bit perplexing though, because most Goosebumps stories had dark, cliffhanger endings, as I remember, and this was nothing like his usual writing style as far as plot. I'd like to see you play escape from horror land as I had it when I was younger and couldn't beat the blasted thing. And I'd like to hear your old Goosebumps stories.
I'd love to see Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland. A friend of mine had it when we were little and I remember always being freaked out by the werewolf.
Despite its flaws, this has a surprising amount of interactivity and immersion, and I like of few of its ideas. The game itself is an interesting blend of adventure gaming and first person shooting. It's kind of like a Goosebumps variation of Normality, with bits of other FPSs mixed in. The puzzle-based boss fights are an interesting feature. I think this game deserves a remake, probably in mod form. I've seen some modders turn obscure bad FPSs, like Exploding Lips and Operation Body Count, into some inspired modifications for Doom 2. The textures and sprites of this game are all good, and would work well in a mod. I'd like to see Attack of the Mutant expanded into a game which blends elements from Cybermage, Rise of the Triad, Hexen, and Chex Quest. I think the premise itself has a lot of potential.
Why does every single syllable invoke such movement in every body part of each character. Why xD i know its an old game, and these must've been top notchon the graphics list, but why? Its hilarious. I love it
Ah yes Goosebumps. By the same creator of the Fear Street series. I'm not sure why, but I fell in love with this series. I've probably read everything goosebumps related right up to the new stuff. (And by new stuff I'm talking some of the horrorland/choose your own goosebumps) and the newer stuff that's just coming out. Yeah as a fellow writer, I'd really be interested in the reading. It's always good to do a reading because that kind of thing shows the viewers something that you achieved. This was a great game play through and I'd love to see your play through of Horrorland.
Lol, Adam West was in this game. I also thought Dinah's VA sounded a little bit familiar, so I looked her up. Turns out she's also the VA for Oracle in the Batman games. Oh man, this video made me feel all nostalgic. I loved Goosebumps growing up. The books and the show. Never knew about any of the games when I was younger though. Can't help but feel like I've missed out on something. I would love to see you play more Goosebumps games in the future. Since you like Goosebumps so much, I was wondering if you ever got into his other series, Mostly Ghostly. I remember reading it back when I was in middle school. I liked Mostly Ghostly but I'm much more fond of Goosebumps. Haha, just thinking about the intro to every episode of Goosebumps still freaks me out to this day. Thanks for the great video!
This was actually fun to watch! You should definitely play more Goosebumps games! :D I used to do that all the time when I was a kid, write horror stories which were totally not a rip-off of all the Goosebumps books I read & movies I saw! ;D
XD I used to like the books as a kid.. Though I never considered them to be horror books back then.. But at that age I was also already desensitized to stuff due to my mother used to be a horror fanatic.. Used to watch movies with her and before I learned how to read she would also read me horror stories XD. ( Oh and of course I was also hooked on horror movies,books,ect.. ) Stuff like this brings me back. Really miss her a lot. Sadly only got to spend 9 years of my life with her but I am thankful for the time I had. XD I was going to leave the comment at that but I just remembered her cooking some meat and me just eating that once with katchup on it.. While watching the original Dawn of the Dead... Think I might go watch some zombie movies now due to this!
Watched the trailer for the new Goosebumps movie today and remembered this game! I used to fearquit this too - don't think I ever made it much further than the first encounter with 'Root Rot' before I'd turn it off! Seriously can't believe how old this game is now, though :S Btw, just as you didn't intend to play the full game, I didn't intend to watch the full video - but I've just stayed up way too late to watch this! Great voiceover, John - so funny at 53:49 "see you lat- oh no!" (And I probably felt a bit too sad for the toad thing that you accidentally killed at 54:55 ...!) Anyway thanks very much for uploading this - real regression session! #TBT
My initial feeling was disappointment that this wasn't Broken Age (I'm obsessed) but I watched it anyway because I always love the commentary and, of course, I wasn't disappointed. Goosebumps never scared me though. Now you make a game version of Are You Afraid of the Dark and I am so done.
That door that was 'blasted open' was where the Galloping Gazelle kick Pinky through, also the Wartlock (the creature you destroyed in Toad world) was the same hideous creature you saw in the same room (the art room)
I honestly don't remember this game growing up and I did game on the PC. I found it at goodwill today for a few bucks and I'm glad I did. This is too cool.
Also, I'm all up for some "Harshly Critical Reads" videos. Can't get enough of your "nerdy" voice. (my dad's description, not mine) Edit: I'd love to see more Goosebumps games as well~
Lol so apparently Ultra Lord from Jimmy Neutron stole the Masked Mutant's clothes... xD But yeah seriously they look like twins... wonder if it's a coincidence or not.
This was absolutely cheesy & absolutely perfect! I knew I would love because I loved Goosebumps so much little. The feedback credo (29:46) was beautiful: Look hot, stay cool. I'm down wit it. Lol. I'd love to see that other game you have. Brings back fun memories of childhood _"oooooh"_ scares! Thank you for playing this!! ^w^
This game was the faint memory that my mind automatically chalked up as a lucid dream to never be brought up again. Man it's odd to see it after all this time.
Man the nostalgia, used to play this game with my best friend at her house when we were around 10 years old. It actually looks pretty good for such an old game honestly! I haven't watched the whole video here but I just remember the part that sticks out in my mind most is a bit where there's more than one of some girl or something and you gotta pick the right one haha
This was great xD Very cute game, I actually liked it and how they did those silly cutscenes - extreme closeups and all. My first horror game was probably Resident Evil 3 at 13. My sister's boyfriend said I'd be too scared to play it (not because I was a girl, mind, that sister was a horror buff/collector) and that was such a cliche thing to say even back then that I had to sit down and beat the whole game one weekend. He was so impressed he got me Resident Evil 4 when it finally came out :3 If you're looking for nostalgia recs, my first "let's play" was watching that boyfriend and an older brother playing "Redneck Rampage" together. That game was quite entertaining, in my memories. xP
I love this! I've never even heard of this game existing before. But it actually still looks quite appealing visually, and dat soundtrack is AMAZING. (It sounds like something by Tommy Tallarico?) This seems like a super charming game.
I feel like I did play this game years ago, but I can't quite remember, I remember playing a first person game that was in a hedge maze, with some kind of plant monster, although I remember him as a weird green big-foot. It was either this game, or another, since other details don't match with my memory. Maybe it was the same game, or maybe it was another one.
Goosebumps collection and reading of your old stories would be hilarious. This game is really wacky, the good guys almost end up being the scary ones because the animation is so in your face with no regard for personal space.
Oh my god, its "Food Fights" more handsome, and muscular cousin . . . . . . I love it! :D - Scratch that, im done, im out. This LSD bus is going *TOO FAST!!!!*
10:50 "THE CONTROLS ARE MESSING UP! THE CONTROLS ARE MESSING UP! MY CONTROOOOOLS!1!!!1!!!" -HyperCritical viewer Sorry, that was a really old joke, but I couldn't resist~
Oh, God! I used to read these books all the time, as a child! They were my absolute favorites. ;A; I'll stop the gushing, there, because otherwise, this comment will have 60+ lines worth of reading. Damn, John. All of this nostalgia o' mine you're bringing back, what's next? Talking about retro food and toys that have been discontinued for almost a decade? Lol, but hey! I'm certainly not complaining.
Oh man watching this type of game(3d qith 1 ppv) gives me a bit of a headache, but i would still watch it until the end of the video because of you. Stay critical as aways.
Yeah, game may be old, but still looks good. And it's cool, even now! Can't believe it's 22 yrs. old, which makes it all the more amazing! How old were you when you played this game? Man, the anticipation waiting for the bug-looking enemie! 7:25 to 8:10
Aw man Goosebumps was awesome. I only managed to read them from my friends since I couldn't afford to buy my own books. Would be nice to prolly find some and read the rest of them. Have you read the Ghosts of Fear Street series too? And yes reading!
So Jim Belushi as The Mutant is great, but Adam West as the Galloping Gazelle is what really sells this game for me. Holy Goosebumps, Batman!
(I have no shame.)
+MyLaundryStinks OMG No way!
LoverWitch he also was the Galloping Gazelle in the episode version of Attack of The Mutant.
No wonder his voice sounded familiar! 😂
Rest in peace Adam West

Jesus, the awkward animation is scary enough on its own. And have these people ever heard of personal space?
It's like if the CD-I Zelda characters were always up in your face.
Seriously why is everyone so fucking twitchy
Rina's face was enough nightmare fuel to get the nightmares going...
Kyle Greer almost competes with ps1 cgi.

Tommie Serveaux how you feel about Jeff Goldblum?
Same! That was so eerie
I loved playing it on my DS when I was younger it was so fun collecting all the cards for the monsters
"It's really not scary"
And then we see that 90s animation at 1:30... probably the scariest part of the entire damn game.
Oh, man... When you uploaded the Jumpstart 4th grade game the other day, I immediately thought of this game and how I was so scared as a child I couldn't play for more than a few minutes.

The intro song for Goosebumps still scares the shit out of me. I shudder to think of the intro itself.
***** that fucking dog man.
All I heard was, "ARF ARF ARF AR-ARF!"
my little brother is also scared to death whenever he hears the song, does it have to do w how u got scared as a kid?
Pfft, come on, John. It can't be _that_ old, I used to watch Goosebumps as a kid!

I'm interested in both the other Goosebumps game and a reading of your short story bootlegs. That'd be pretty cool.
You better keep these gossebumps videos all of them every last one!!!!!!!!!
This game was the faint memory that my mind automatically chalked up as a lucid dream to never be brought up again. Man it's odd to see it after all this time.
That Pinky guy or whatever looks like he belongs in Fallout: New Vegas... or is that just me?
mewtuwa He would be probably a mascot or a horror movie character in NV.
pepper Mill I imagine him as the leader of a gang of raiders or something, what with that mohawk, that suit and those weird finger thingys.
mewtuwa that....could kind of work....
You should totally read your childhood writings in front of a spooky fireplace.
Man the nostalgia, used to play this game with my best friend at her house when we were around 10 years old. It actually looks pretty good for such an old game honestly! I haven't watched the whole video here but I just remember the part that sticks out in my mind most is a bit where there's more than one of some girl or something and you gotta pick the right one haha
it's the bit at 1:10:00 haha I'm honestly surprised we got that far in the game/finished the game
I would legit die of happiness if you were to ever upload you playing The Pink Panther: Hokus Pokus Pink. 😭
This game, is true horror.
Ahhh memories, thanks for the up load I always wanted to know it ends
This was great xD Very cute game, I actually liked it and how they did those silly cutscenes - extreme closeups and all.
My first horror game was probably Resident Evil 3 at 13. My sister's boyfriend said I'd be too scared to play it (not because I was a girl, mind, that sister was a horror buff/collector) and that was such a cliche thing to say even back then that I had to sit down and beat the whole game one weekend. He was so impressed he got me Resident Evil 4 when it finally came out :3
If you're looking for nostalgia recs, my first "let's play" was watching that boyfriend and an older brother playing "Redneck Rampage" together. That game was quite entertaining, in my memories. xP
Those models are fucking terrifying.
Especially the girl and the guy with pink hair.
I love this!
I've never even heard of this game existing before. But it actually still looks quite appealing visually, and dat soundtrack is AMAZING. (It sounds like something by Tommy Tallarico?) This seems like a super charming game.
Is this satire?
Just discovered this video. Loved it, I'd love to see you play the other Goosebumps game and do the story reading.
SO MUCH NOSTALGIA!
Goosebumps collection and reading of your old stories would be hilarious.
This game is really wacky, the good guys almost end up being the scary ones because the animation is so in your face with no regard for personal space.
Oh my god, its "Food Fights" more handsome, and muscular cousin . . .
. . . I love it! :D
- Scratch that, im done, im out. This LSD bus is going *TOO FAST!!!!*
Also, that reading you mentioned would be incredible

"THE CONTROLS ARE MESSING UP! THE CONTROLS ARE MESSING UP! MY CONTROOOOOLS!1!!!1!!!" -HyperCritical viewer
Sorry, that was a really old joke, but I couldn't resist~
Awesome late upload! I almost ran out of vids to watch to delay sleep.
I completely forgot about Escape from Horrorland! It was my first experience with anything Goosebumps, would love to see you play it.
Oh man watching this type of game(3d qith 1 ppv) gives me a bit of a headache, but i would still watch it until the end of the video because of you. Stay critical as aways.
I loved this game as a child and still do.
Oh please play escape from horror land i wanted to read that book when i was little but i had to give it back to the library lol
Yeah, game may be old, but still looks good. And it's cool, even now!
Can't believe it's 22 yrs. old, which makes it all the more amazing!
How old were you when you played this game?
Man, the anticipation waiting for the bug-looking enemie! 7:25 to 8:10
A reference to The Shining?
I'm glad you've resisted a "Here's Johnny!" reference temptation. I hope.
I was expecting dog barking in the intro music. That was my favorite part in the show.
*cry*, *sob*
I really want to play this again lol, what a nostalgia trip
Aw man Goosebumps was awesome. I only managed to read them from my friends since I couldn't afford to buy my own books. Would be nice to prolly find some and read the rest of them. Have you read the Ghosts of Fear Street series too?
And yes reading!
Omg the memories of the Goosebumps books :D with the 3d title on the front cover imitating real goosebumps lol yay for the nineties!
And this is where my anxiety began. This game scared the shit out of me as a kid. I couldn't continue past that green house 😭
Did he ever do a reading of the books he wrote when he was a kiddo?
I dont care how cheesy this game was it scared the shit out of me.
