You know, I don’t really think Superman needs a justification to be mad that a child was kidnapped. That’s something that most people would have a problem with.
I think it's more that people read that assuming Clark already knows bruce and thus would know there's probably a more reasonable explanation then "batman kidnaps child!" would imply, plus he'd be able to just go talk to bruce instead of having to speculate on why, and it seems like the fact the justice league doesn't exist yet and the pair aren't friends yet is revealed and explained later

I think it's more the way the anger was portrayed. Yes superman would get angry at something like that, but he's way more sensible than acting as if he wanted to rip batman a new asshole. In other situations similar, while not including batman, show superman simple finding and apprehending them.

If you had no concept of Batman and read this, the first issues would 100% make you think that Bruce payed off the assassin to kill the kid's parents.
Not only that, it would be super simple for anyone in the comic to draw thos connectins. Not Bruce, but Batman. Dude just happens to be in the same place where the kid's parents are murdered, by a man who is known to be essentially a criminal mercenary, and then he immediately kidnaps the now orphaned child. That should've been Vicki Vale's big scoop.

Imagine paying full price for a well drawn Batman comic by an industry legend, and it's about him & Robin painting themselves yellow and drinking lemonade to piss off Green Lantern, and basically nothing else happens

Honestly, that would make a much better comedy based Batman series
Considering that Batman is a character that is well characterized as being someone who is logical and direct, I see two potential choices for making him a bit more in character in regards to having him use yellow against Green Lantern.
The first, though not the best option, would be to make it so that is the most logical route to take as if every other choice would cause something bad to happen. This seems difficult to implement as it would usually require having a villain to counter every option, of which would require quite a bit of effort.
The second, seemingly more ideal option, would be to make it the correct choice by adding another problem that being yellow can solve. In this case, we'll assume that Batman is someone who is intent on solving problems themselves. Next, have a character, lets assume Wonder Woman, who although in some ways agrees with Batman's moral code, thinks that the best solution is to use violence. After some debate on how to communicate with Green Lantern, Batman decides to show how violence isn't always the best solution, decides to paint the room in yellow.
The yellow would then be the seemingly best answer as it would show that violence isn't always considered the best option in a very obvious manner, and would also allow him to talk to Green Lantern in person in a relatively safe manner.
But then again, I barely read any comics, and if this were the case, we wouldn't have The Batman boldly telling everyone to shut up in a cartoon-like fashion.

He probably wouldn’t be very good at it, but he’d at least try to reduce their trauma as much as possible (I’m imagining him covering the kid’s eyes as he helps them walk to the police station so that the kid won’t have to see all the dead bodies of Frank’s many victims).
I realize I’m sort of getting off-track with this, but to circle back to OP’s point: if I can imagine a scenario where the fucking _Punisher_ displays more empathy and compassion towards an innocent child than _Batman_ displays in this story, then that means something has gone horribly wrong.

Why is Batgirl wearing earrings? Not just earrings, but dangling earrings. That is probably the worst possible accessory to wear while fighting crime. A criminal could easily grab them and rip her ears up. Not only would it hurt like hell, it would also be very noticeable and hard to explain to her parents.

Some of Batgirl's costumes tend to be somewhat fashion-esque. I guess that's her thing.
My first thought was that they were clip-on earrings with some sort of trick functionality to them - like, maybe they double as a com-link, or maybe she can detach them and throw them at enemies like emergency Batarangs. But that would imply a level of competency and skill that every female character in this book is fundamentally incapable of, because this book is more misogynistic than a working-class middle-aged man in the 1950s.

I'm not gonna lie, Batman was being so terrible for so much of the story that the thought crossed my mind that it was Batman who called the hit on Dick's parents in order to get him to be his sidekick. Then Batman poisoning the hitman so that his mind is messed up would actually be him not wanting the hitman to be traced back to him. I genuinely thought for a moment that they were making Batman go full villain...instead of whatever the hell this iteration of him ended up as.

May I recommend Batman: Hush? It’s another Batman comic with art by Jim Lee (the artist of this comic) and it’s famous for different reasons than ASBAR is - i.e., actually being very well-written.

@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 That, and Batman's short but incredibly memorable moment with Superman that actually understands their relationship. And then there's Commissioner Gordon, whose appearance actually explains he has limits to Batman's antics.
Batman: Hush is a prime example that a superhero comic can be incredibly fun even if the plot point turns out to be mediocre. Hush himself is a poor villain and the sequels don't make him any better. It's still a memorable book nevertheless because the characters are intriguing and the actions are fun. Despite the disappointing main bad guy, the book did almost everything else right.
This Batman is so sadistic that he goes as far to paint himself, Robin, and an entire room yellow just to spite Green Lantern. It’s actually kinda hilarious in retrospect.
As someone who loves the color yellow, I see this as an absolute win.

One story did everything it could to show a possible ending to a character's story, giving closure to their relationships and paying homage to their entire legacy.
The other tried to retell the origin of a character while reframing their legacy around some of the character's worst aspects.

After seeing his parents gravestone, I just had to wonder "Did he really just leave Dick trapped in the Batcave for days or weeks until he could convince him to become Robin?! Further making him look like the criminal here, and psychologically manipulating him into telling the media that it was to protect him?!

And before mental retardation, the words for intellectual disability that even the most liberal people you know probably continue to use as insults to this day, yet they were never considered slurs. So no writer using it here would have characterized it as Batman using a slur.

It wasn't right mind, but at that age curse words and slurs are edgy y'know? As much as DC likes to make their heroes moral paragons who don't have sex, do drugs, have a hot temper and go off sometimes, and definitely wouldn't ever say something bigoted, in a more realistic reading a young Dick or Damien using a homophobic utterance to be defiant until Bruce set them straight about it would make sense to me.
ETA: Not to mention this comic chopped up the morals and attitudes we respect and like for most of the characters that appear in it, so in context a homophobic Dick isn't that out of the ordinary here.

My head canon is that this is a Dark Multiverse story and a prequel to the Batman-who-Laughs. It was always a bit of a stretch that just the joker toxin alone turned Batman into a mean sadistic psycho, but if he was already one like this iteration, that explains so much...

The reason Superman never flies in this comic is because Frank Miller decided to make it so that this version of Superman hasn't discovered his flight yet for no other reason than to try to make Batman seem smart by having him reveal in a throwaway line to Black Canary in issue 7 that he somehow knows Superman can fly even though Superman himself doesn't. It's as dumb as it sounds.

According to Frank Miller, this Batman is suppose to be the same Batman from Batman Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. In Year One Batman is very reserve and mellow, and even risks his life to save a cat from some incoming fire from police officers, and in The Dark Knight Returns, Batman saves Carrie Kelly (who was Robin at the time) from a fall, and comforts her by telling her that she is a good soldier, and never smacked in the head or called her names.
This is just a Sin City character using Batman's costume.

He did this on purpose. He revived batman basically and then other writers kept copying his work, making batman comics more dark, edgy, and overall ridiculous.
In interviews he commented on writers not having their own voice and direction, seemingly copying his work with the character and comics in general. He was frustrated.
He wrote all star to illustrate the stereotypes, tropes, ridiculousness of it all.
I'm not denying he definitely has problems, but he was purposeful with this.

I actually read a great fanfic once about the origin of Owlman and Talon (the Robin of Earth-3), which is basically the exact idea you described here. It also explores the idea of what a good/heroic Joker equivalent on Owlman’s world would be like, and how their rivalry develops, which I think is really interesting!

Frank Miller was going through a ROUGH period on his life from the early 2000s until very recently. He seems to have gotten better, but he had to deal with addiction, personal trauma after the 9/11 attacks (he was living close to ground zero), depression, a divorce, health issues (suspected to be cancer and/or a stroke, but he never announced it), everybody telling him how much of a legend he was and refusing to rein him in, etc. Honestly, look at recent pics of him, dude seems to have aged 40 years in the span of 5. He has disowned a lot of the crap he came up with in the 2000s (like Holy Terror) saying he wasn't on the right place at the time, I guess All-Star Batman is an example of that.

This comic frustrates me... the WHOLE POINT of Batman taking in Dick Grayson as Robin was because a) Im pretty sure Grayson was most likely going to chase after the guy who killed his parents anyway, and b) because he cared about the kid and did not want Dick to end up becoming a depressed angry loner like him, and putting him in the position of Robin gave him a healthy means of working through his trauma, and it works! He ends up becoming Nightwing, who is essentially a Batman who isn't a jerk (not to say that Batman is a jerk, but he does sometimes act mean to people that don't really deserve it)
Edit: turns out this wasn't actually the reason, at least in the original, since in the original story there was no good cop like Gordon to protect the kid, so Batman taking him in was his only option. This reminds me of comment that said something like.
"I wouldn't be surprised if this Robin became teen titans go Robin."
And I still find it weird how much sense that makes.
In the very first Dick Grayson appearance there was no commissioner Gordon (or any cops that weren't corrupt and in Zucco's pocket) so Dick would have died had he not been taken in away from the state as a ward of Bruce Wayne. Who no one could buy off or afford to attack his family.
Bruce took him in to save his life and because he saw himself in him. Then he let him become Robin because the kid was so skilled he actually already outclassed Batman at aerial stunts and speed. Bruce knew he'd be safer with him

This comment reminds me of that one scene from Young Justice where Wonder Woman is arguing with Batman about him training Robin at such a young age (I’m paraphrasing here somewhat, so cut me some slack):
Batman: “I was trying to help him. I wanted to give Dick the strength to bring his parent’s killers to justice.”
Wonder Woman: “Why, so that he’d end up like _you?”_
Batman: “So that he *_wouldn’t.”_*
Not to defend this comic book (because the writing is terrible), but this isn't mainline continuity where Dick turns out to be a great person. It's the Dark Knight Returns timeline where Dick turns into a superhero-murdering psychopath who hates Batman in The Dark Knight Strikes Again. It's implied in that book that Batman being way too hard on Robin as a child is part of what drove him insane, so this is the prequel depicting that. It just does it in some of the dumbest ways possible.
What's disappointing is that there's a counterpart, All-Star Superman, which is widely regarded as one of the *best* Superman stories ever with fantastic writing and characterization of Superman. They did the Dark Knight so dirty here.
Maybe the other comic also called "All-Star Batman" (minus Robin, The Boy Wonder) actually does the same as All-Star Superman. It was created by some other people not named Frank Miller back in 2016/2017

I just can't get over the fact that the writers decided to have batman crash his car against one that has his girlfriend and Alfred in it for no reason.
To paraphrase an old quote about Batman, it doesn't matter how grimdark and edgy of a bat God he is, because if you can see him comforting a scared child then you're doing something right, if not it's just the punisher
Even Frank has a heart towards innocents. If he didn't have that he'd just be a mass shooter with an agenda.
That's exactly the reason I adored the flooded arena scene in The Batman. The first person he helps is a child, and we get to watch him go from a violent avenger to a hero who wants to help.
I think back to the final episode of Justice League Unlimited where Bruce comforts a child in her last moments before she dies. Batman might be portrayed as moody or very stern, but he has a heart.
Hell even the Punisher had moments of humanity sprinkled in.
The ironic part of that quote is that in the Dolph Lundgren movie, Punisher ACTUALLY takes the moment to comfort the kid of a GUY WHO HE KILLED.
Even someone like Frank Castle is kinder than Miller Batman. (Or should I say: Crazy Steve?)
Small clarification for anyone who doesn’t know, but Bruno isn’t just another one of this comic’s horrifying creations. She actually originated in The Dark Knight Returns, swastika boobs and all. I have no fucking clue what Frank Miller was on back then, nor when he wrote All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder, but I guess he’s just really proud of making Bruno that he just had to include her in another story.
I was about to say, was Frank Miller accidentally plagiarizing himself or deliberately making a cringe-ass callback? In this particular era of Miller losing his fucking mind, either one could be true.
In the Dark Knight Returns comic book she also has her ass cheeks hanging out with swastikas plastered on them too lol

What's weirder is that I like the concept of an insane, sociopathic Batman with no morals fighting an imaginary war. It'd be cool for a villain trying to emulate Batman or an Elseworlds character like Flashpoint Thomas Wayne. That sounds awesome!
But normal Batman? This doesn't work if it's supposed to be a faithful take on Bruce.

Its important to note that this is basically an elseworld character. All Star Batman & Robin takes place in the same continuity that The Dark Knight Returns takes place in. Not the mainline DC universe.

I don't know what it is, but something about the line "Dick Grayson, Age 12" just keeps popping up randomly in my head every few months; it's hilarious.
Bruno almost killed me. When you described that panel, I was so dumbfounded that i literally laughed so hard that I could feel myself passing out.
And it's kind of funny, because I almost immediately called it the moment he said the reason he censored it wasn't nudity!

@@Derkosson I remember seeing here in that too, which is confusing. Due to when The Dark Knight Returns takes place, that has to be Bruno's daughter or something.
What kills me is the idea that Dick Grayson's parents' killers wanting him dead, too, and chasing after him in the wake of their death, and NEEDING Batman to get him to safety, is a really compelling idea for a reworking of the story. But we unfortunately got Frank coked-out-of-his-mind-for-decades Miller to write the story
Yeah that would 100% fix 1% of this comic.
