When it comes to picking a deck to play. I personally like to take into consideration 3 things: is the deck relatively easy to learn?, is it fun to play?, and how much does it cost?, I like to not just play a deck cause it’s META rather because I want to play it though power level does come into consideration when I’m making my decision

Its just really disappointing when you find an archetype you like, then you realize its not destined to go anywhere.
Maybe its to restrictive, the gameplan isn't as efficient, or its to commital.
I just wish Konami would throw a bone to the lessers.
Idk I play evil eye alot and if that normal summon or field spell gets negated you better hope you have the perfect hand because you don't do much of anything. Same if your Cutie gets ashed and what not.
Don't even start on the even older decks that needed 5 pieces to land on a single card..... fortune ladies.
Not everything is equal and nor do I think it should be. Just wish there was less disparity and more love for those that can not. You got decks that can play through 3 negates + and those that lose to a single one. Atleast try to get more decks to a playable modern stand.

    • @KikiCatMeow

      Me with Watts lmao
A TON of those older archetypes just can’t compete with even the most mediocre modern decks unless they’re splashed with a newer archetype (following the Watts example, Watts+Thunder Dragons) but then it just feels like the modern archetype is being bogged down by the old one, and you’d be better off just playing a pure version of the modern
I don’t think there’s really a way to fix this without completely overhauling like 15 years worth of decks unfortunately

I often view an archetype/engine's power by how well the archetype performs its intended design and how splash-able it can be. An archetype that isn't splash-able can still be powerful if it has solid game design and synergy with itself. And vice versa where an archetype may be bricky with on its own, but can increase its strength by mixing with other archetypes.

It's just that they crumple to ash blossom a bit too easily and require so many in-archetype cards to work that if you run too many techs or hand traps you end up being unable to use a bunch of the cards. So many times you end up having to just summon nasten or indulged darklord, set 2 and pass with almost no resources to recover if you don't get killed outright. When looking at archetypes I look to see if there are any locks in the archetype and if not is there a way to splash them with other stuff. An example is as funny as it is when a friend started taking games with Appliancers it had me noticing some of them lack a once per turn or can spam themselves out but within the archetype itself the ceiling is only so high. And that’s where people much smarter than most of the playerbase find that other archetype to run with the weaker one so Lunalights with Time Thief or Orcust, or Tribrigade with Lyrilusc. I love seeing these archetypes merging together because it speaks to the creativity of the community in their deck building. Like who wasn’t surprised to see Lunalight win a YCS in a format of orcust and thunder dragon?

The thing with engines and decks in general is that, it reminds of that one quote "the more things change the more they stay the same". I've been listening/watching to Cimo's History of Yu-Gi-Oh whenever I'm in game or not from time to time, and I've noticed that there's not really that much of a difference this current format is compared to the formats of yu-gi-oh's younger days except probably for the pace of the game, where most decks are technically just goodstuff decks with different flavors. The best example of this are most GOAT format decks and more especially the TeleDAD decks, and the point gets even clearer as the format moves forward into the future where the set releases start featuring archetypes in them more frequently. People would argue that the powercreep started when Cyber Dragon got released, some would say that Dark Armed Dragon was the tipping point, others would even go as far back as the Gravekeepers despite only peaking in relevance during the late Synchro to early Xyz era, but regardless of all that, patterns exist for a reason, and we will eventually have a format where you'll see a lot of goodstuff/kitchen sink decks running around, determining the standard of what it takes to be the best deck and if anything, we might already be there. That's not to say that it's a good thing entirely, though.

I like the God Cards, I am really annoyed how those didn't get animations in Master Duel other than the most niche card among them, Ra Phoenix Mode. I feel like they are due for getting upgraded versions, closer to what they can do in the anime. Take Slifer for example, what would be so hard about just making him work on Def as well, like in the anime, also give all of them them Kaiju protection, which they also have in the Anime. The title is very true, not all decks are created equal, but something you only briefly talked about is the huge amount of powercreep in this game. It is not just that things are not created euqal, stuff has escalated so far, that something like original Anime Ra with a literal page of effects would now a days be just fine for a boss monster, since it is pretty hard to bring out. So yeah, while you are right that there is a good reason for not all decks being designed on the same level of complexity or power, I feel like there is no good reason for the seemingly countless amount of boss monsters, that were obviously designed as big scary boss monsters, that just aren't like that anymore or never were to begin with. I feel like the more I think about it, the more annoying it gets, because the game could have so many more things actually be really decent if the powercreep wasn't that severe or was addressed somehow.

Actually, that would be pretty cool, as it would give you some incentive to run a god card to potentially remove opposing god cards, while also giving you something pretty decent. Combined with their field spell that would actually give them some staying power, considering they can't for example get Zeus-ed to oblivion in that case. They would still be far from OP, they may still gett skill drained or something. But yeah, something like that + Kaiju protection and a buff to Slifer's ability to also target def is probably a good way to start.

Some of them happen to be really strong, which is nice, but all of them are fun to mess around with. The power levels, a deck seem to be most powerful based on how consistently it can make GENERIC boss monsters, gamebreaker GENERIC cards or play powerful engines and play trhu interruptions, this seems pretty obvious, but I would like to put emphasis in generic, in master duel the top decks seem to be tribrigade zoodiac, and drytron, drytron can play thru a couple of interruptions and can go into an insane boss monster that's NOT from their own archetype, and can afford to play engines or good cards such as eva/cyber angel/heralds as well as hand traps, tri brigade can easily go into Zeus, virtual world into vfd, phantom knights into rhongobongo, and all them can go into apollousa and accesscode, if we take duel links as an example shiranui was insane because it could just play all the traps that for a while were the most powerful cards in duel links, and in the tcg, decks that can go into predaplant anaconda to go into any boss monster, decks that can play the adventure engine, decks that can go into accesscode or apollousa, and I gotta say, that's not fun at all, I stopped playing my agent deck (that was by far my favorite archetype) because the better it was, the most it looked like any other deck, ending in apollousa + borrelsword + any other floodgate, and at that point it migth as well be any other deck, like dinos, or phantom knights, what was the point of playing a unique deck if it would end up into the same board as any other deck, I switch to weather painters and I gotta say, as slow and annoying as it is it was also the most fun I had, the archetype has a unique gimmick, that even if you could easily go into other monsters, you really had no motivation to do so, it's nearly impossible to play other cards in that deck, and the only reason to go into non archetype is for a plan b, and the boss monster unique to this archetype is also pretty good tough harder to make effectively, playing more competitively doremichord is also an archetype I really enjoyed, while it also ended in generic monsters most of the time the in archetype cards were nothing to sneeze at, a pure solfachord deck is actually pretty decent, and in a world were all decks were archetype exclusive it would be one of the strongest, that's were I'm getting at in my wishlist, giving archetypes strong boss monsters but limit them to the archetype, archetypes like shaddolls or mekknigths, still make it able to play good generic cards for consistency, but limit the boss monsters to their own archetype, a pure tri brigade or tribrigade lyrulisc would still be insane, but it couldnt go into Zeus, virtual world that couldn't go into vfd, drytron that can't go into herald, the same decks, without the generic boss monsters, and drop the engines, like adverturer or halqifibrax, that only benefits some decks, this would make it so you actually had to choose what deck you are playing making all of them equally interesting, and you can still deckbuild for whatever makes your deck, more consistent, not all archetypes need to be only archetype cards, but all the bosses would need to be summon with that archetype.

As the only one who regularly competes, I feel obligated at times to build a much lower tier deck in order to not completely ruin the fun.

I can understand certain decks having advantages over others or just being better. I think the problem a lot of people have myself included, is that the game they're giving us is very different from what they're showing us and it's to the point where it feels like a completely different game than what was advertised. Imagine you're an anime watcher and you pick up a deck from the show because you like how it looks, how it works, or becauseit reminds you of a character you like. Then you go to play in real life at a locals and everyone is playing a deck that you never saw before on any season of the anime or its various iterations and now you're getting bodied by all these annoying negate spam, lock down, and wombo combo meta decks completely unprepared because they never pulled this crap in the show. Well okay they do combos because we want to see people playing the game, but the combos in the show usually don't end on negate spam like they do irl. You'd be pretty darn peeved because now you feel like you just wasted your time and money on a game that isn't what you thought it was. And for some bizarre reason, Konami refuses to accommodate for the audience it cultivated. Catering exclusively to a hyper competitive crowd that could literally care less.

This is a great comment. And an interesting perspective to hear. I enjoyed the OG anime as a kid, but once I learned competitive aspects of the game, I started to dislike the anime, bcz the experience I was having was so different. I realized that Yugi and almost all the protagonist deck's would suck IRL and that they are all essentially cheating.
So as a competitive-minded player I dislike the anime, while you are a more casual player who enjoys the anime and has been put off by competitive play. Very interesting to see the opposite side of the coin.
I personally think the anime should focus onthe in-game lore. Duel Terminal, World Legacy, this Dogmatika arc would be amazing to see in the anime. But, if they were stay with the same formula, it would be nice to see the main characther have an actually viable meta deck. and see them use Forbidden Droplets, Evenly Matched, etc.

Plus meta is just boring. All the so called "competitive" decks focus on is locking the opponent out of the game. Seems pretty Anti competitive if you ask me. There was this one duel in Vrains where Yusaku was dueling a bot whose strategy was ripping his hand away before his turn even started and it's implied that the bot could play in a way that kept him from ever getting cards. It was basically a next gen Yata lock. And it was the most boring episode ever. I dont like the anime because it doesn't represent or showcase the most competitive elements of the game. On the other hand, as a fan of the anime, you dont like how competitive play has no resemblance to the anime. Essentially both of us are dissatisfied that the anime is so different from TCG play, only we are dissatisfied for different reasons. I find that interesting, do you not? Let's be real, konami makes certain archetypes better than others solely cause of money. They want to make really powerful archetypes and/or engines and make them really expensive so people will buy them and they will make more money. A modern example being the brave engine. And I feel it's often at the cost of making the game more unhealthy and less fun. Sworsoul tenyi which just came out to the tcg just last year many would argue has already been powercrept by top decks now such as all the different kinds of pile on decks or the decks/cards expected to come to the tcg later this year which is ridiculous. If konami is gonna keep power creeping this game in such short periods they should at least continue to give older archetypes like volcanics, amazoness, harpies, crystal beasts, cloudians, monarchs, the egyptian gods, and so forth the support to at least be decent rogue options. These archetypes are what brought a lot of people into yugioh in the first place and are very liked and memorable to old school players like myself which gave yugioh the popularity and recognition when it first became a thing in the West to be as successful and well known as it is today. Just like how dark magician, heroes, and blue eyes have gotten tons of support to make them good rogue options the same should be done for all the archetypes from the duel monsters and GX era.

I honestly see it pulling traditional Yu-Gi-Oh players away from the actual, physical card game. Master Duel has done something unprecedented by making it available across all platforms not excluding cellphones and tablets. This is starting to make all content Master Duel content. I already didn't care for the virtual/video form of card gaming to begin with. It just always seemed so impersonal. I prefer to see the misplays, hear the fun, see the deck building process; partially & just enjoy the overall experience of a group of friends having fun as if I was right there. I've actually pulled away from a lot of people I've subscribed to because of they have become all about Master Duel. I can appreciate that you have remained consistent and understand how to adapt in moderation. I'd love to see more theme duels. Those were very entertaining to watch. PS can we get Alex and Alek in the same duel. Please. It's like we never see them together anymore. That would be awesome to see them as captains in a two on two team duel.

Like why does Exosisters (which I love btw) get 3 support cards already while Rikka and Solfachord which have been around for a lot more get just one. Solfachord in particular is basically unplayable, they could really use some decent support...

I love volcanic decks. But people that played the game just stop playing with me due to them saying that it's weak. This video will help people realize that not all decks are going to be the same and the power level will be different and so will people's play styles.

It's nice to have the odd bogie deck, the ones you try because you want a challenge. Likewise it's good to have more...brainless ones for when you can't be bothered, or don't have time. Concerning the competitive Meta, I think the game caters a bit too much to players who want ' archetypal triangle formats', rather than a varied Meta of strategies. There's always a few archetypes and strategies that are so competitive they leave a huge gulf between themselves and everything else.

i personally enjoy the metaphys archtype the most but i dont think itll get to much more(if any) support and i find that metaphys is powerful and fun but its first turn is typically just a normal summon which is depressing.

perso if every archetype could have hope that going pure they can pass 1 negate and go to an end board(1 in archetype boss monster/win-cond on the field) with at least 50% of their hand.
    Then I would be happy.

I just wish that all archetypes would be finished products after 2 or 3 sets and would be playable. Not at meta capacity, but playable.
I definitely think engines have a right to exist but an engine should be a complementary aspect of an already functioning deck, not carrying the entire metagame. I love the way Adventure is designed but it is just too expensive for me. If Gryphon did not have an omni negate the engine would not have seen this much meta relevance and more players could have enjoyed the actual archetype for what it brings to the table as a whole.

And then there are arctypes, once strong, then only an engine and now a one out of five win. Looking at you Subterror. Since link monsters came out, wich cannot be flipped face down even Guru becomes a Garnet.
Arctypes in general cannot be equally strong because arctypes are build around a certain playstyle. Some playstyles are stronger than others, some even allow FTKs (and are hit by the banlist if they can pull that of consistently).
But that is one reason I prefer Yugi over other CCGs. Different playstyles and diffent ways to win not only beatdown.

I like this because this is what i was thinking in my self about konami.. Me playing raidraptors and hoping for support but all cards and archtypes have this power i think as a deck or as an engine or just for people who love thess types or arts and have fun seeing it in the game

I also play raidraptors and tbh they feel like they are 2 cards away from meta. They can make infinite negates going first. They can otk with arc rebellion but that is hard as they can't break boards. Their other problem being handtraps

Nah not rly, I don't have the money for dark ruler or lighting storm so I put triple kaiju and forbidden chalice instead. You can get rid of the kaiju from their side a million ways(revolution falcon, infinity, arc reb, dark requiem, rusty..). But yeah the field spell could work. I have 3 of the new simorgh just missing their field spell tho, they are pretty good in the deck

Ogdoadics are way better than I expected the new reptiles to be, but they're still bad and I'm actually ok with that. They're cheap and playable to a certain level, and that keeps their prices low and the masses from learning them. I hope we can see more new archetypes fill the pet slot for other people the way this one has for me

What frustrates me more than sheer power level of decks is random unnecessary restrictions and card interactions not working that seem so obvious.
My usual example of this is time thief adjuster, time thief is a bit of a fan favourite deck (or at least people love redoer) and they gave adjuster a 1 eff per turn clause it didnt need, then they release tempwhaler which summons itself from the GY by bouncing a TT monster you control. OH? So its meant to bounce adjuster, summon itself then trigger aduster for a rank 4 every turn right? NOPE it summons simultaneously so it wont trigger adjuster... WHY? Thats such an obvious interaction and yet it doesn't work like that and its just frustrating.

I've been playing Witchcrafter in Master Duel and Scroll is one thing I do not understand why they designed it the way it is. Once per turn you can draw a card if a spellcaster destroys a card by battle... It's the only one that isn't Witchcrafter specific with its effect, and if it was it wouldn't need to be once per turn because it's not like they have a ton of attack power.
