The PA AMEK 200 lives on my mix bus and Howie's presets are indeed a regular (and often timesaving) starting point when I'm mixing. Howie masters a lot of the stuff I produce and he is an absolute joy to work with... the same energy, positivity, and enthusiasm you see in this interview is what you get in person. Love this guy.

This mention of compression. I don't understand why the industry hated heavy compression so much. I love the heavily compressed sound. It makes it feel like I'm in the room with the musicians. Tom Coyne had it absolutely nailed. I use a song (the streets by jay z and r Kelly on best of both worlds album} mastered by Tom Coyne as my reference track for everything. It isn't quite flatlined but has very heavy compression and it just sounds crystal clear. It is totally immersive and powerful. I have never found any lightly compressed songs that give me that feeling of being in the room with the musicians like heavy compression does. The reduction in dynamics really brings it out of the speakers in to the room. Keep it hot. Fuck dynamics.

I actually feel the opposite, heavily compressed SOMETIMES feels like the band is hitting a wall and they can't surround me. and it's fatiguing, so I end up turning it down.Green Day Revolution Radio is not a rock album to me, it s flat, cold, I can't understand or feel it. I prefer American Idiot rem HiRes remaster ( basically the original mix). I was surprised to enjoy an old Guns and Roses CD, not for the production but for the music. Then I keep cranking, it feels good, for long minutes. and then BOOM a drum fill that is scary jumping out, dangerous ! it grows on me, dynamic music I tend to dive in, or be alert because anything can happened. some very compressed can be ok too, depends on the music.

The EQing and Saturation is on point
a professional mastering engineer like Howie may receive quite regularly, songs that are So Perfectly Mixed, by some of the world's best Mix Engineers, that the compression is already so totally perfect, that adding extra compression may not even be necessary at all. But if he were to get a song sent to him from an amateur mixologist like me? I can assure you a compressor will be Totally Necessary.

The details to control the nuances is sort of how I think about sound. I love recorded and live sound.
