I do not think that my unit was defective. This was a reviewer copy and may possibly be updated when released. I have no idea if that will happen. The Power Base converter cannot be applied as it cannot fit. I tried the Power Base Mini and it did not work. Game carts load every time. The games sound accurate and frame drops were not very noticeable when playing in person. I stand behind my review I gave as being as honest as I could be.

On atariage you wrote that you noticed lag on the sega genesis flashback but no lag on that atari flashback. I quote, " Lag with the Atari ones not an issue. A little more noticable with the Sega one, not bad." Considering the reviewers got a bad production run of units, it may be useful for people to know what you wrote on the forum. As it addresses one of the issues in the reviewer production run. You are very well respected in the gaming community. Clearing up this confusion will help people consider buying this product, especially after the Gamestop "Don't buy this review". This is my feeling and only in my opinion... It seems that atgames wants to put out a completely upgraded and well functioning product this time around... without any of the small problems from the reviewer production units. Bill Loguidice has been pretty confident on atariage in saying that the public units will be fixed. His direct quote, "There are a few key issues with the review units that are out there now. One, the controllers require two presses on each button and direction to "wake up" that button or direction. Once woken up, it's OK, but you shouldn't have to do that obviously between power cycles. Some games run at half speed or perform poorly. These and other things are all being addressed before this goes to full production (tracking down where the problems were introduced and addressing them), but it obviously doesn't help that the sample run for reviewers has those issues. I'll obviously let everyone know if for some reason a problem is NOT solved."
John Hancock I'm new to your channel, as for some gamers we want the real feel experience but on a budget, this being priced at 79.99 do you feel you get the most bang for your buck? I feel you could buy a genesis cheap or a system and game bundles for under 30. Plus it annoys me you cant use the sega brand 3 button controllers.
Love that "Tingy" music. No piece of game hardware sounds quite like a Sega Master System/Genesis. I can still hear the title theme for Chakan in my head all these years later. As always, great video. . .
Does it store the cart dumps on the console or are they dumped out every time? It looked like in one of the shots it had multiple carts listed in the cartridge section.
Finally! Looks like this IS actually all what they promised! I wish 3-button controllers worked on it but other than that minor gaff - this is amazing! Great job on the review John!

Atgames have had the license for years, the previous versions were really crappy and just cheap gift ideas. It wasnt until Nintendo released the mini classic that they realized they had a gold mine. I bet Sega now regrets licensing the rights, atgames probably bought the rights for next to nothing, this is the first one that seems decent.

I still would not pay for this crap, with the dropped frame rates, no 3 button controller support, 32X support, no SMS power base support, no SEGA CD, the lagging wireless controllers, and over all lack of classic like Streets of Rage series, then I'll stick to my model 2 Genesis, and emulation via my Homebrewed Wii, and Android phone with a MOGA controller, Plus I've been burnt one too many times by AT@Games crappy product over the years to give them anymore of my hard earned money.
Still does not change my opinion, because I feel they should either do a full on proper remake, or not even bother. AT@Games has made shit products for years, and this is just more shit with with an HDMI output on a cheap Chinese SOC. I will give them this the sound is 98/99% correct this time unlike all the other times they tried to pump out these cheap overpriced Genesis/Mega Drive remakes.

I can't wait for these flashback consoles this year. They finally moved up to HD, and I am willing to fork up the extra cash for a better quality product. Hopefully I can find them! Great review too. There was something so special about the Genesis when I got it. I remember looking at the cases of the games and the details on the console; as a 10 year old, I remember feeling like I was upgrading to a "big kid's" video game system. Thanks for making this! me and my sister used to play that tails adventure game a lot back in the 90's. i remember liking it a lot, it was definitely one of the better game gear games we had back then.
very nice review, well presented, and nicely addressed key points. I agree with some who commented here that a lot of other great games in the SEGA era are not included. Buying the cartridges then also not guarantee the game will work. As for turning the device off to insert the cartridges, I think its good idea, because it protects your game from being damaged as well as your console, plus that was the way we used to do it back in the days. Great video. Growl, Shadow Dancer, Splatterhouse, Trouble Shooter, Flashback, Castlevania, Haunting and Golden Axe were my top favorite games on this system. The system looks pretty good with the controllers and the option to use your cartridges. Maybe this will be asking too much, but it would have been cool if it had an option to connect to a Sega CD system for that price tag. Either way, neat looking flashback system.
John! I have the older version of this without the HDMI cable. I appreciate it for what it is and I use a real Genesis controller with it. The sound is sadly not very good and the controllers it comes with are also the same where you have to use a screw driver. I thought they changed it until I saw you trying to open it and realized it was the same. Great video!!! Possibly in the future do a favorite arcade memories video!
i think for sport fans, the sega was the best for sport games, and im missing that on this system, they could at least throw in an nba or an madden football game or something, even in my country the sports games are very expensive, butt cool console, im a huge sega and nintendo fan. and the turbografx 16 bitt games are cool, and i have gotten all the new consoles, butt i like the 16 bitt games the most.... i still cant decide what console i love more the megadrive/genesis or the super nintendo it was the best of gaming times.... hee great video again my friend, hope youre doing well, my greetings to you and everyone in the retro gaming community

I had this mini Genesis that had built in games and used carts. The IR controllers were hell to use. They were impossible to use in 2 player mode as the system couldn't register both at the same time. This seems sooooooooo much better.
Adding it to my list. I just bought the Super NES classic. I want to get all of these mini systems. It seems the coolest thing about this one though is being able to play the old cartridges so you don’t have to go back and buy the old system if there are games on the system that you want but aren’t on the hard drive.

One more thing, since you had the unit four a while has your feelings changed on it ? Have you discovered any bugs or does it still function the same as you first received it ?
I picked up one of these used for £25 and I love it. Most of my favourite games are already on it and then I found out that I can add carts to my collection without having to invest in original hardware again, bonus. The last Time I brought a megadrive was when my son was about 3 or 4 and I remember thinking how cheap it felt compared to the modern consoles at the time so had it not been for picking this up I'd still be enjoying my Sega classics on the 360 instead.
I've watched SEVERAL review videos and I respect yours the most. The reason I respect your review because you summed up the video I needed one short sentence "you can just pop in your cartridge". A lot of reviewers are fake "purist", they bitch and complain about sound, lag, frame drops, and spec info. But truth be told, it's a third party product backed by the Sega brand and if they're such purist... you wouldn't even waste time and money buying this product. I wish they just go buy the original system and spend several hundred dollars building a library. This is more for the consumer than for the collector
Awesome in depth review. You might have put up a Genny Model II to show size, but we've got a pretty good idea as far as size is concerned. Did you also try the console with some of the Electronic Arts and Accolade cartridges. I thought I had heard that the early EA games didn't work with some of the remake consoles. Especially the first 3 (Madden, Zany Golf, and Budokan). Again, thanks for your time, and great videos.. I will definitely have to order one from Another Castle.
For those complaining about the framrate and stuff like that: The "creators" released that some units that they sent to reviewers have some noticeable bugs such as that in them, and they will most likely be fixed in the final version.

From the video, the games seem to be missing frames, i thought that was quite obvious. I felt that your overview of the product should be on its own,using its included peripherals not having to use a wired controller to cover up what has to be a major shortfall of the game in its laggy controllers. Choppy gameplay plus laggy controllers cannot possibly give a good experience? This seems like a throwaway product and is mighty expensive at $80. Your incredible gaming collection and enthusiasm is awesome and cool (which is why i am subbed),but that product is in no way, in the way you have presented it, neither awesome nor cool.

I saw it in Walmart yesterday, I thought it would not have a cartridge slot to play my Wrestling games but it does. Also the Portable Genesis looks cool. To bad the wireless controllers could not work for the Atari!

and i have gotten all the new consoles,
butt i like the 16 bitt games the most....
i still cant decide what console i love more the megadrive/genesis or the super nintendo

it does not have an sd card slot!, and since it downloads the cart to memory everdrives cant work either.
I had this mini Genesis that had built in games and used carts. The IR controllers were hell to use. They were impossible to use in 2 player mode as the system couldn't register both at the same time. This seems sooooooooo much better.
I was not going to get one, but now after watching this I'll be getting one.
Back in January I got the Sega Genesis Classic Game Console by Atgames from Kohls which is the preveus version of this. But now I want this one.

Adding it to my list. I just bought the Super NES classic. I want to get all of these mini systems. It seems the coolest thing about this one though is being able to play the old cartridges so you don’t have to go back and buy the old system if there are games on the system that you want but aren’t on the hard drive.

One more thing, since you had the unit four a while has your feelings changed on it ? Have you discovered any bugs or does it still function the same as you first received it ?
I tried loading the ROM of SUPER Street Fighter II on my 2018 Genesis Flashback HD and it still has issues. Sprites register but backgrounds do not.
I picked up one of these used for £25 and I love it. Most of my favourite games are already on it and then I found out that I can add carts to my collection without having to invest in original hardware again, bonus. The last Time I brought a megadrive was when my son was about 3 or 4 and I remember thinking how cheap it felt compared to the modern consoles at the time so had it not been for picking this up I'd still be enjoying my Sega classics on the 360 instead.

I've watched SEVERAL review videos and I respect yours the most. The reason I respect your review because you summed up the video I needed one short sentence "you can just pop in your cartridge". A lot of reviewers are fake "purist", they bitch and complain about sound, lag, frame drops, and spec info. But truth be told, it's a third party product backed by the Sega brand and if they're such purist... you wouldn't even waste time and money buying this product. I wish they just go buy the original system and spend several hundred dollars building a library. This is more for the consumer than for the collector
Awesome in depth review. You might have put up a Genny Model II to show size, but we've got a pretty good idea as far as size is concerned. Did you also try the console with some of the Electronic Arts and Accolade cartridges. I thought I had heard that the early EA games didn't work with some of the remake consoles. Especially the first 3 (Madden, Zany Golf, and Budokan). Again, thanks for your time, and great videos.. I will definitely have to order one from Another Castle.

For those complaining about the framrate and stuff like that:
The "creators" released that some units that they sent to reviewers have some noticeable bugs such as that in them, and they will most likely be fixed in the final version.

Never heard of it nor seen it back when I was a Genesis Guy, but I paused your vid, put it in FULL SCREEN and I noticed that thumbnail for the game looked familiar to this computer game my wife loves To Freakin DEATH! called "Zuma" I mean it looks awfully darn close man. Wondering if you get the time, would you mine sharing a clip of gameplay on that? I've searched YT and Google for Bubbles Master Sega Genesis and I'm not getting anything is why I ask. John, any word from AT Games they fixed the defective issue that happen on the demo units that went out ? Hope they addressed the issue before the final units ship.
question - I've seen many reviews of this console and I'm wondering if you got a defective one or a good one. Atgames said they sent out defective units and were correcting the issue. This review is more positive than those and so I was just curious.

Given the At-Games Namco "Dongle Debaucle," would you still recommend this hardware? I'm a bit on the fence, although this video (scan lines included) sways me strongly in favor of a purchase.
From the video, the games seem to be missing frames, i thought that was quite obvious. I felt that your overview of the product should be on its own,using its included peripherals not having to use a wired controller to cover up what has to be a major shortfall of the game in its laggy controllers. Choppy gameplay plus laggy controllers cannot possibly give a good experience?

I saw it in Walmart yesterday, I thought it would not have a cartridge slot to play my Wrestling games but it does. Also the Portable Genesis looks cool. To bad the wireless controllers could not work for the Atari!
