I just did the entire NE BDR on my 701 in 7 days, perfect bike for it. Started in NJ so it was 2100 miles round trip. Seat Concepts and Kriega OS-32 bags and Shift Racks. Awesome BDR as far as great views, country and people. 16k on my, runs great… 300 two strokes for riding the NJ pines though.. 😁👍

I have 17,000 on my baby currently and was supposed to be heading back east in a week or so to do the MABDR and the NEBDR but my truck took a ### and the Mrs is having bit of trouble with health so riding the bike would take me to long :( Good to know it’s able to cross country because I’m going back to next year as hell yes 300 2 stroke and 701 are the perfect combo!!!!!!
@@2wheelsandatent I ran Pirelli MT-21’s, (rally knobbies) they lasted the entire trip, front is still very usable, rear has a bit more than a 1/4” on it (29lbs front, 31 back is the trick to reduce wear on slab) they were the perfect tire for it I think. Only advice, change out your clutch slave for an Oberon one before you leave and bring a spare fuel pump or put a new one and a filter in before you go. Both of those like to fail at inopportune times and Ktm/husky dealers are not handy, just one at the beginning and not close. I mapped out the most affordable motels and grafted them into the gps tracks, motels and gas stations are not to close to the trails in some areas as they folded up with Covid (we called every one to make sure they were not out of business and had rooms, what’s left were almost all full so call ahead. We brought spare gas on the bikes but never needed it, always found a station at about 120 miles and we both get about 150 a tank on the 701 and my buddies 690. Anyway hit me up if you have any questions, it’s all pretty easy except some pretty challenging rock sections and mud. No problem for a seasoned rider at all.

690/701 is still the best compromise out there especially 2019 model onwards as they are so powerful and smooth. I now own a 2021 690 but I rode my 2015 690 from NY to Miami 2 up no problems ( and I am 6.2" 200 lbs, she is 5'8' and slim admittedly! ) and also did the extended 7,350 mile TAT in 27 days (Average 272 miles a day) in the same year. No bike is a perfect "unicorn" but as compromises go, so far the 690/701 is still in pole position for that award. It is the only 74 BHP bike for the single traveller because it is easier to pick up than a WR250R due to the under-seat fuel tank and it has race level suspension and brakes as stock.
I’m glad you are loving yours! I love my 701 as well and agree it is the perfect bike to stitch travel on and off-road together while still being able to handle the serious off-road sections! Sounds like you had quite the trip from NY to Miami and 2 up wow that’s great! What seat do you use? That’s my only complaint is I can’t find a “step up” seat for the 701 and the Mrs doesn’t like being same level as we tend to knock helmets at hard stops lol.
@@2wheelsandatent For that trip stock 2015 seat with gel cover and she sat on rolled up foam bedroll! On the 2021 I use the stock seat as it quite plush ((good for 3 hours). Upgraded seat from the 20 model actually amongst other features such as gear indicator, Off-road ABS as standard (no dongle needed) rev counter function (albeit useless to actually use) and 34 clicks on front forks (extra 6 clicks v 20 model I think).

I have a 2021, bought used, but it remains mostly stock. Has 12k miles on it, which is not a lot for a bike like this. I put a Seat Concepts XL saddle on it, and a fuel dongle that allows the O2 sensor to still work, but at a richer target. Previous owner raised gearing with a bigger front sprocket, so I went back to stock size. My biggest complaint was with the suspension. The WP Xplor forks are terrible. The left side fork has almost no damping in it in the stock form. I searched around, and found a thread on KTMtalk forum where people are fixing these forks. The trick is to convert them to normal open cartridge fork design. You buy two adjustable base valves for compression damping adjustment, and convert the goofy left firk leg to be the same as the right one, which makes both of the top adjusters for rebound damping. You’ll also have to reduce the rebound damping shim stacks since you now have two forks performing that function, but you may find the stock base valve shim stacks are adequate on the new adjustable base valves, now that both base valves are actually doing something. I have no idea what WP was trying to do with the Xplor design, but it did not work.

I think you have it figure out! I have been looking at the ADV bikes and none of them can handle my riding style in the dirt, maybe a T7 or an Africa Twin but once you look at the weight of those and how they perform off-road I really think you have the best option out there! Well done.

I just got a bmw Gs 800 for the wife and I to 2 up in fact I am heading to Colorado tonight with her to try and 2 up the Colorado backcountry discovery route 🤞 But the 701 is the perfect bike for 1 up adventure in my humble opinion most versatile bike it and the 690 nailed it I swear but that’s just my opinion

Oh man I’m a bit jealous IDBDR is awesome!!! I would say ask yourself how off the beaten path you want to get and how far as to the bike choice. The 690/701 is an off-road machine designed to be at home off-road and can “handle” freeway miles and the T7 is a bit of the opposite. I mean I’m not saying the T7 can’t handle off-road great it seems to be more comfortable on “touring the tarmac” than the 690 or 701 and my 701 feels like a big dirt bike off road which it literally is but a 1,000 miles of tarmac on it is nothing like your GS :( I hear either choice would be a great choice! Enjoy Idaho and “ride right” especially on magruder ! Cheers!
I had the same dilemma deciding between T7 and a 690 or 701 I ended up with a 2019 690 and couldn't be happier, I do a lot of my riding by my self so 350lbs vs 450 it's big difference, I just did the Alpine loop in Colorado, and that bike will eat most of the big rocks, it's a fun big dirt bike, that will bring out the play mode out of you
@@2wheelsandatent I guess or hope you allready bought a bike. I own a T7 since 30.000km (1.5 years). Aweseome bike on and offroad. Not a single problem so far. But doesnt matter how good you ride. Dont ride the t7 alone offroad. I mean actually i would say never ride offroad alone... But if the t7 + luggage falls over at a place where your tank is lower than your tires. Have fun putting it up alone :D. Its possible but holy moly it takes a lot of strengh. So far i can tell you can even ride single trails with the t7. But keep in mind that weight ALWAYS matters. i am planning to buy a husky 701 supermoto next year. Just for the fun :D Cheers from Austria
As cool as my 890R is, it is no dirtbike. Its a good dirt road bike and gravel bike, and a wonderful on road bike. 500 mile day is no problem. Im a life long dirt rider but at this stage in life I dont really want a near 500lb serious off road bike. Near 600lbs loaded maybe. The 890R gas tank does work great, its like a bumper when the bike falls over, notice I said when not if. Although Ive only flopped it down twice trying to turn it around in a narrow rocky area. I'm 6 ' and my foot dont reliably reach the ground. I really love the 890, but have wanted a modern 690 for a good while. Love your reviews, your a tough guy to ride it on road that much. But Ive done 620 mile days on my DR650 with out much problem at all. So I could deal with the 690 just fine.
Well I just added a 2020 ktm 790 adventure R to the stable so hopefully I can give some pros and cons this year to both. The 701/690 is awesome I have been so lucky to have it. The 790 is meant for being able to 2 up with the wife not being as top heavy as the bmw I sold to get the 790. I’d say get the 690 if you can it is literally a big dirt. I did lower them I believe 3/4 inch was the suggested if I recall. I have been toying with the idea of raising them just to see how the bike handles but have not ever actually tried it yet. Good question ! I hope you are enjoying yours as much as I have been mine! On a side note I have been seriously considering the titanium firebox just for the weight savings because I love mine! The only thing that occasionally seems to make me leave it in some trips is the weigh. I had Duke 690 until it got stolen this past summer. Looking at replacing with husky 701. The 690 motor is the most versatile single you can buy. Also- I’d recommend to anyone with any 690 variant to replace the slave cylinder ASAP. Mine failed when I was 50 miles from home. Replace with the Oberon master slave cylinder and you won’t have issues.
I have replaced mine as well that silly slave cylinder lol. Yes I love the 701 it had treated me well and will go anywhere I dare to point it on not off road;) Sorry to hear about the KTM getting stolen that’s terrible 😢 Good luck and many adventures on your next 2 wheels!
I would suggest getting one! I may have to sell my baby since the wife is joining me now and we got a Gs 800 but the 701 is the most capable bike and funnest I have ever ridden. The 790 I got to ride last month was fun fun fun but a lot heavier to pick up. I thought I would love the 701 before I got it but after almost 20,000 miles on her I love her even more than I imagined!
Thanks for watching, the 701 is so fun especially off-road and the more I ride it on road the more I like it there. The 701 will never be a BMW Gs on the road but the GS will NEVER be a 701 off-road ;)
Is that Spanish Fork or American Fork Canyon? If you were at a dealership today and had no bike, knowing what you know.701 or 890? I had the chance to ride my neighbors 890. It is very impressive.
Knowing what I know today would be the 890, tough one because since I got the 701 my adventures and distances have changed DRASTICALLY! I was just planning on camping and riding up American fork (which is where that video was ... nice job :) The forst adventure was Idaho Bdr with Tim and then the Arizona Bdr with Tim and then Utah Bdr 2 time’s (so far lol). And my initial thought was the wife and I could 2 up to close by canyons and camp. Now I find myself facing a 6 or 7,000 mile trip back east for 2 BDR’s and thinking the 890 would sure be a blessing for that plus the wife would like it more. Unfortunately that stupid truck blowing the engine all on cost us enough that the 890 is just a fantasy and the damn truck is now not working I think a starter that’s under the intake manifold is bad lol. I’m finally 4 months later honestly just crawling out of the depression not being able to make that happen and starting to get back to being ok with making whatever I have work. I love the 701 but I crave the 890R to fill in the gap ;) I rode a 790 r off-road for a spell and I have never smiled so big. But the 701 had done it all for me 1,000 plus mile trips on pavement to do 500 plus miles off-road and back. My only complaint is in utah and Wyoming there are serious stretches of flat with wind gusts up to 50 mph and the light weight of the 701 makes those not to fun. Other than that which I fight through it does it all even with my 82 lb Siberian husky on the back lol Cheers
Certainly is there is pretty much no place a “smaller bike” can go that the 690/701 can’t until we get to “hard enduro or extreme enduro” But in the right hands it could probably do that to (just not in mine lol)
Very nice video! I think it’s a very capable machine. A bit more wind protección would be ideal but you can’t hav everything. I would like you to ask how do you do for your sidebags not to melt because of the exhaust. It’s being a problem for me because with the stock exhaust, even with a giantloop exhaust heat shield, it gets terrribly hot and I think that any soft bag would burn sooner than later in contact with it (the heat shield) Thank you
How is the vibration at highway speed? The bike is nearly identical to the KTM 690 Enduro which has a lot of complaints regarding the vibration from the engine.
Well I find that people are not as “tough” as they used to be lol. But seriously 1- the vibration comes from the knobby tires mostly 2- it is meant for off-road mostly 3- I put a steering stabilizer on which helped I rode 1,000 miles on freeway from utah yo Arizona no problem. It is never going to be a cruiser feeling so if you don’t like the feeling of riding your dirt bike at 80 mph probably not the bike for (whoever). But it is the funnest bike I have ever owned for what I do whichjia pavement to say a bdr for 10 days of off-road riding. If you are serious about off-road riding but don’t want to trailer your bike to the dirt it’s a fabulous option!
I’m looking at maybe purchasing a 2018 husky 701 Enduro like yours. It’s only got about 3000 miles on it. Question is how do you like the WP 4CS forks? And rear suspension? Any issues with the fuel pump? The one I’m looking at already has the Oberon slave cylinder.
The only issue I have really had in 15-20,000 So far was the darn o ring on the slave cylinder I would replace that with an aftermarket I think was like 100$ or so. The suspension is not bad however I have a good friend who makes parts to make dirt bike cone valve equivalent and he won’t work on my forks for the 701 lol I have not had an issue with the suspension however y is the first thing I would upgrade if finances were not an issue. I have a 300 ktm 2 stroke with the cone valve type addition and so I am spoiled by riding that to compare to a stock sys may not be fair. I LOVE that bike it fits what I do so well. I use it solo on backcountry discovery routes and it is perfect for me. I don’t trailer my bike most times I have ridden 1,000 miles of freeway and it’s ok. It’s no street bike don’t take that wrong but it is capable and I always have 50/50 tires. I have not tried more street friendly tires. I have a seat concepts seat that is very comfy but riding in high winds on a light bike is something I had to get used to. Now the 74 horsepower or so on a 300 ish pound bike is pretty fun I have to say lol. The fuel pump I replaced the filter for it not the whole pump and I had to shim the valves at around 13000 miles which I’m making a video about how to do that. Hope that helps let me know if you have any other questions. I am a bit bias however I will be honest with shortcomings I have had like above. If you do get it have some fun I seriously do not regret that bike for 1 second

That’s so great to hear! I have been thinking of making a video about picking your first off-road dual sport or adv motorcycle but have not yet. My biggest suggestion would be seriously think how much on road you will use it and how much off road. The smaller the bike “weight” off-road the easier it is to not only learn on but to handle in more challenging terrain as well as pick up because off-road dripping bikes is just going to happen. I have not weighed my setup however I have had no issues or concerns with the frame. I used the tusk pannier rack for years and am back to it now I carry my Husky 80 lbs dog on the bike! I think the last trip I weighed about 23 lbs on each side and 28 on top (without the dog on that one) I hope that helps. I do use a rear rack (tusk or other) always even with the reckless 80. I also should add that I am not a “gentle” rider and torture test all gear ;) Obviously shedding weight is a priority to us all and as the budget allows I purchase lighter and lighter gear

I did that in a pinch think in a Walmart parking lot lol. I have them tied into the headlight currently and have been meaning to do them correctly with a switch. I just remember having a long ride ahead of me through mountains and knowing night riding would be happening and the stock headlight is way to dim to miss deer 🦌 etc. Thanks for watching and the great question/ reminder that I need to put those on a switch
I added Denali 2.0 DMs to my Duke. Hardest part for the husky might be finding a place to mount I’d imagine. The process was simple as I just spliced the auxiliary lights into the existing low beam wire. It comes with a switch so you can toggle on/off. I would NOT recommend the DM 2.0s as the vibration of the 690 eventually broke the skinny metal bracket that held the lights to the hinge mount. You’ll want something bigger and more robust than the DMs

Just asking to know because I’m an ambassador for the bdr and am trying to keep as updated as I can. I just did Valley of the gods about a month ago and then went into Colorado for a day or 2 with a buddy!
@@2wheelsandatent Yes everything was open, it was extremely hot though. Large group of riders were scattered through Butler wash, and the section into Wellington was had some very deep silt sections. Reservation Ridge was snow free.
@@REDROCKMAN2010 yeah I skip butler now lol. Last year I took some folks on their first bdr and 2 of them ended up in blanding hospital because of that section probably 4 or 5 miles befor pavement on butler wash. Video coming soon well soon ish lol

I mean I’m not saying the T7 can’t handle off-road great it seems to be more comfortable on “touring the tarmac” than the 690 or 701 and my 701 feels like a big dirt bike off road which it literally is but a 1,000 miles of tarmac on it is nothing like your GS :(
I hear either choice would be a great choice!

I had the same dilemma deciding between T7 and a 690 or 701 I ended up with a 2019 690 and couldn't be happier, I do a lot of my riding by my self so 350lbs vs 450 it's big difference, I just did the Alpine loop in Colorado, and that bike will eat most of the big rocks, it's a fun big dirt bike, that will bring out the play mode out of you

I own a T7 since 30.000km (1.5 years). Aweseome bike on and offroad. Not a single problem so far. But doesnt matter how good you ride. Dont ride the t7 alone offroad. I mean actually i would say never ride offroad alone... But if the t7 + luggage falls over at a place where your tank is lower than your tires. Have fun putting it up alone :D. Its possible but holy moly it takes a lot of strengh.
So far i can tell you can even ride single trails with the t7. But keep in mind that weight ALWAYS matters.
i am planning to buy a husky 701 supermoto next year. Just for the fun :D

As cool as my 890R is, it is no dirtbike. Its a good dirt road bike and gravel bike, and a wonderful on road bike.
500 mile day is no problem.
Im a life long dirt rider but at this stage in life I dont really want a near 500lb serious off road bike. Near 600lbs loaded maybe.
The 890R gas tank does work great, its like a bumper when the bike falls over, notice I said when not if. Although Ive only flopped it down twice trying to turn it around in a narrow rocky area. I'm 6 ' and my foot dont reliably reach the ground.
I really love the 890, but have wanted a modern 690 for a good while. Love your reviews, your a tough guy to ride it on road that much. But Ive done 620 mile days on my DR650 with out much problem at all. So I could deal with the 690 just fine.
Well I just added a 2020 ktm 790 adventure R to the stable so hopefully I can give some pros and cons this year to both.
The 701/690 is awesome I have been so lucky to have it.
The 790 is meant for being able to 2 up with the wife not being as top heavy as the bmw I sold to get the 790.
I’d say get the 690 if you can it is literally a big dirt.

Hey Cody thanks for the review I put a lowering link in mine as well. I was just wondering if you lowered your shocks in your triple tree as well or did you keep your front end stock?
I did lower them I believe 3/4 inch was the suggested if I recall.
I have been toying with the idea of raising them just to see how the bike handles but have not ever actually tried it yet.

I had Duke 690 until it got stolen this past summer. Looking at replacing with husky 701. The 690 motor is the most versatile single you can buy. Also- I’d recommend to anyone with any 690 variant to replace the slave cylinder ASAP. Mine failed when I was 50 miles from home. Replace with the Oberon master slave cylinder and you won’t have issues.
I have replaced mine as well that silly slave cylinder lol.
Yes I love the 701 it had treated me well and will go anywhere I dare to point it on not off road;)

The 790 I got to ride last month was fun fun fun but a lot heavier to pick up.
I thought I would love the 701 before I got it but after almost 20,000 miles on her I love her even more than I imagined!

Is that Spanish Fork or American Fork Canyon? If you were at a dealership today and had no bike, knowing what you know.701 or 890? I had the chance to ride my neighbors 890. It is very impressive.
Knowing what I know today would be the 890, tough one because since I got the 701 my adventures and distances have changed DRASTICALLY!
I was just planning on camping and riding up American fork (which is where that video was ... nice job :)
The forst adventure was Idaho Bdr with Tim and then the Arizona Bdr with Tim and then Utah Bdr 2 time’s (so far lol).
And my initial thought was the wife and I could 2 up to close by canyons and camp.
Now I find myself facing a 6 or 7,000 mile trip back east for 2 BDR’s and thinking the 890 would sure be a blessing for that plus the wife would like it more.
Unfortunately that stupid truck blowing the engine all on cost us enough that the 890 is just a fantasy and the damn truck is now not working I think a starter that’s under the intake manifold is bad lol.
I’m finally 4 months later honestly just crawling out of the depression not being able to make that happen and starting to get back to being ok with making whatever I have work.

I love the 701 but I crave the 890R to fill in the gap ;)
I rode a 790 r off-road for a spell and I have never smiled so big.
But the 701 had done it all for me 1,000 plus mile trips on pavement to do 500 plus miles off-road and back.
My only complaint is in utah and Wyoming there are serious stretches of flat with wind gusts up to 50 mph and the light weight of the 701 makes those not to fun.
Other than that which I fight through it does it all even with my 82 lb Siberian husky on the back lol

Certainly is there is pretty much no place a “smaller bike” can go that the 690/701 can’t until we get to “hard enduro or extreme enduro”
But in the right hands it could probably do that to (just not in mine lol)

Very nice video! I think it’s a very capable machine. A bit more wind protección would be ideal but you can’t hav everything. I would like you to ask how do you do for your sidebags not to melt because of the exhaust. It’s being a problem for me because with the stock exhaust, even with a giantloop exhaust heat shield, it gets terrribly hot and I think that any soft bag would burn sooner than later in contact with it (the heat shield)

How is the vibration at highway speed? The bike is nearly identical to the KTM 690 Enduro which has a lot of complaints regarding the vibration from the engine.
Well I find that people are not as “tough” as they used to be lol.
But seriously
1- the vibration comes from the knobby tires mostly
2- it is meant for off-road mostly
3- I put a steering stabilizer on which helped
I rode 1,000 miles on freeway from utah yo Arizona no problem.
It is never going to be a cruiser feeling so if you don’t like the feeling of riding your dirt bike at 80 mph probably not the bike for (whoever).
But it is the funnest bike I have ever owned for what I do whichjia pavement to say a bdr for 10 days of off-road riding.
If you are serious about off-road riding but don’t want to trailer your bike to the dirt it’s a fabulous option!
I’m looking at maybe purchasing a 2018 husky 701 Enduro like yours. It’s only got about 3000 miles on it. Question is how do you like the WP 4CS forks? And rear suspension? Any issues with the fuel pump? The one I’m looking at already has the Oberon slave cylinder.
The only issue I have really had in 15-20,000
So far was the darn o ring on the slave cylinder I would replace that with an aftermarket I think was like 100$ or so.
The suspension is not bad however I have a good friend who makes parts to make dirt bike cone valve equivalent and he won’t work on my forks for the 701 lol
I have not had an issue with the suspension however y is the first thing I would upgrade if finances were not an issue.
I have a 300 ktm 2 stroke with the cone valve type addition and so I am spoiled by riding that to compare to a stock sys may not be fair.
I LOVE that bike it fits what I do so well.
I use it solo on backcountry discovery routes and it is perfect for me.
I don’t trailer my bike most times I have ridden 1,000 miles of freeway and it’s ok.
It’s no street bike don’t take that wrong but it is capable and I always have 50/50 tires.
I have not tried more street friendly tires.
I have a seat concepts seat that is very comfy but riding in high winds on a light bike is something I had to get used to.
Now the 74 horsepower or so on a 300 ish pound bike is pretty fun I have to say lol.
The fuel pump I replaced the filter for it not the whole pump and I had to shim the valves at around 13000 miles which I’m making a video about how to do that.

I have been thinking of making a video about picking your first off-road dual sport or adv motorcycle but have not yet.
My biggest suggestion would be seriously think how much on road you will use it and how much off road.
The smaller the bike “weight” off-road the easier it is to not only learn on but to handle in more challenging terrain as well as pick up because off-road dripping bikes is just going to happen.

How much weight do you carry? Any concerns or issues with weight on frame?
I have not weighed my setup however I have had no issues or concerns with the frame.
I used the tusk pannier rack for years and am back to it now I carry my Husky 80 lbs dog on the bike!
I think the last trip I weighed about 23 lbs on each side and 28 on top (without the dog on that one)

I do use a rear rack (tusk or other) always even with the reckless 80.
I also should add that I am not a “gentle” rider and torture test all gear ;)
Obviously shedding weight is a priority to us all and as the budget allows I purchase lighter and lighter gear

How did you hook up your auxiliary lights?
I did that in a pinch think in a Walmart parking lot lol.
I have them tied into the headlight currently and have been meaning to do them correctly with a switch.
I just remember having a long ride ahead of me through mountains and knowing night riding would be happening and the stock headlight is way to dim to miss deer 🦌 etc.

I added Denali 2.0 DMs to my Duke. Hardest part for the husky might be finding a place to mount I’d imagine. The process was simple as I just spliced the auxiliary lights into the existing low beam wire. It comes with a switch so you can toggle on/off. I would NOT recommend the DM 2.0s as the vibration of the 690 eventually broke the skinny metal bracket that held the lights to the hinge mount. You’ll want something bigger and more robust than the DMs

@@2wheelsandatent Yes everything was open, it was extremely hot though. Large group of riders were scattered through Butler wash, and the section into Wellington was had some very deep silt sections. Reservation Ridge was snow free.

Last year I took some folks on their first bdr and 2 of them ended up in blanding hospital because of that section probably 4 or 5 miles befor pavement on butler wash.
