This is one of the most beautiful and theologically elevating Christian hymns. The early church knew how central the Holy Trinity is to the Faith, and how central the Lord Jesus Christ is to our salvation. Gloria in excelsis Deo. From a Protestant pastor.

Also in 63, just a seconary school but you would think we were Cantamus choir lol, choir misstress was so strict that before every concert we had to write every song word for word, we were good . Even when in church & its sung I natually sing this in latin & a few heads turn..Those were the days

The author and Composer was King John IV of Portugal in 1645. Erroneous and subsequently, it was spread as being composed by other authors. Of course, these authors, having been born after the oldest manuscript of this work, can not be considered true authors, nor is there any expert who now defend it. This manuscript comes from the Royal Library of the Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa (Portugal) By the way, it was known in the english royal court at the time, as the "Portuguese Hymn"
A king who composed a Christmas carol? Wonders never cease! I must admit I don't actually believe any king can possibly compose such timeless musical masterpiece. I think the king has ordered someone else to compose this wonderful song and then he simply took the credits for it! Kings have no sense of music at all!
Hi Michael. Don't know if you are still looking for the album. I had a look on Amazon UK. The closest thing I could find was Chior of Christchurch vinyl LP. There is currently a copy available. Merry Christmas
It has always been common for composers to create derivatives or adaptations of previous works, variations on a theme. Recent (within the last century) copyright law has permitted composers to copyright these derivative works as their own works. If you listen to this version [ua-cam.com/video/kfcZlDOa3rU/v-deo.html] for example you'll here a lot of contrapuntal voices in a version that could have been copyrighted even though the original tune could not have been. As there is no known manuscript of this work attributed to King John IV, who was indeed an avid composer, and the music didn't surface until the mid-nineteenth century, it's unlikely he was the actual composer. A stirring work no matter who wrote it.
RedFoxCommissar It's even better if you're not an atheist and embrace what it is actually saying and meaning!! If you don't, it's just a nice tune! Merry Christmas!!
Lisa DC It is powerful and beautiful music regardless, not just a nice tune. I’m a liberal and a Christian, but many I know are atheists and agnostics and still feel this music.
Nice version, but not my favorite. In my opinion this song needs more contrast between different passages in organ playing, varying mostly between medium and powerful, it also sound good to momentarily leave out the bass line before the powerful section. It can be really breathtaking for me.

WOW That has to be the best version I've ever heard!
I sang this in a boys' choir in 1963 - in Latin.
Same. Circa 1977-1-78. Mixed choir though.
Me, too. Episcopal Church in New Haven CT 1958. Also in Latin as is this version.

The best version which I know.... Thank you !!! :-):-)
Wonderful and beautiful....
Adeste Fideles presents a change from the English version and beautifully sang.
The origin is Latin. Mass was always done in Latin until after WWII -- Vatican 2.
El latin suena a musica del cielo . Precioso dialectos.
Merry Chrismas!!!!!!
and Glory we feel !
@ maynooth11 - because of your video's I bought the album for christmas. I love the traditional sound and also the clarity of the vocals.

Irish monks were singing this. World owes them preserving continuity between Roman culture and Modern world.
"How the Irish Saved Civilization"
They're not monks, Christ Church is an Anglican foundation, and this is a simple (albeit smashing) Cathedral choir.
if they would play it for the Vatican national football team it would be cool!
SO much more graceful and elegant than the usual clunking English version.
