When I become a doctor im so gonna be donating a lot of cash to crash course. I mean they help me to understand so much of what my teachers cant even come close to putting over in a comprehensive manner, when compared.
Then also put some money toward moves to nationalize the higher education system - so every student has a primary resources as good as, or better, than crashcourse.

Oh, Oh, Oh, They Traveled And Found Voldemort Guarding Very Secret (Ancient) Horcruxes And to remember the type of nerve (sensory, motor, or both), you can use this mnemonic. Severus Snape Meets Malfoy, But Mad Bellatrix Stays Behind Bushes Misusing Magic.
Great as usual. Most relaxing to stimulate Vagus nerve (breath deep- in 6 secs & out 6 secs.) "You should certainly safeguard your nerves, and force yourself to take time, and not only for prayer and meditation, but for real rest and relaxation." ~ Baha'i Faith, Lights of Guidance

I love crashcourse so much because I've been stressing about and putting off a psych paper because I thought this stuff would be so hard to learn. Looking at the book it was, but crashcourse always explains things so much better
6:20 My dad said when he was in school, he learned that mnemonic, but with the word "boobs" instead of "brains". I don't know why his teacher taught him that, or why my dad told me that story, but whatever.
Can’t thank you enough for this. Not nearly good enough with words to explain the situation lol, but want you to know this info and moreover the delivery is life changing. Can see the light of understanding go off and you’ve created an interest where I never could. Thank you.
Awww thank you very much!!! Well, As a student nurse, this series of videos help me a lot in understanding A&P beside of making my own note (drawing a lot of structure etc.)By watching these videos, I understand easier than simply study using lecture note, honestly... Hope that I can perform well in the final exam tomorrow~
Captivating videos like yours are rare, Hank. Just a reminder for people who might have subconsciously associated the parasympathetic nervous system with cranial nerves: eight out of the twelve cranial nerves are not parasympathetic.
at my med school, there’s a song about cranial nerves that is passed down from generations to generations. they said that some students made it 20 years ago, and we’re still singing it now. even the professors know and taught us about this song.
Ok ...this is strange but I allocate each of the cranial nerves a character of the Simpsons. For the motor nerves they are male characters and for sensory nerves they are female. If they are both sensory AND motor I allocate the nerve to a character of futurama. The function they do...I imagine the character carrying out that function...For example the olfactory nerve I have allocated to Homer which I invision him smelling a pie
I use the analogy of the car. Parasympathetic is the brake. Sympa is the accelerator. Without the brake, you crash. Without the accelerator you vegetate
The one I use is "on occasion Oliver tries to anally finger various guys, vaginas are history" it's very grotesque and crude but it's so much so that it makes me remember it very well
+Lily May Toomey I see that you are studying the terms n. Vestibulocochlearis (VIII) and n. Accessorius (XI) instead of the american ones! Since I'm Dutch I need to study those as well. Thanks for this one, it is great!
Old Opie occasionally tries trigonometry and feels very gloomy, vague and hypoactive. Is the one I think works the best. The first few letters of each word give you a better clue of what the nerve is.

A lot of nursing students I know use the term 'auditory' instead of ‘vestibulocochlear'. Someone mentioned 'oh, once one takes the anatomy final very good vacation start happening' so you can use that one if you prefer (I use that one as well)
Yuzu Mint oh cool! Thanks for the clarification, I feel like using auditory eliminates the thought of balance and orientation though which is kind of a big deal really...

You guys are just too freakin' awesome for my parasympathetic system to handle ;) Thanks :) Damn, over 4 million subscribers, that tells you something... Thank you!
Hank, as a subscriber, I have enjoyed all your videos; but, this is one of--if not, the MOST--interesting and fascinating video you've ever done. Thank you! And, uh...well... just keep up the great work!
My professor gave us extra credit if we created our own phonemic for the cranial nerves. Heres Mine: I. On- Olfactory II. Office- Optic III. Overtime- Ocularmotor IV. The- Trochlear V. Tired- Trigeminal VI. And- Abducens VII. Fatigued- Facial VIII. Adult- Auditory IX. Gives- Glossopharyngeal X. Very- Vagus XI. Angry- Accessory XII. Help- Hypoglossal
I just remember it as oooptafagvah (pronounced as upta fagva) that's a pretty decent word to pronounce. The p is for pathetic nerve which is another name for trochlear and the a is for the spinal accissory.
My anatomy professor uses On Occasion, Our Trusty Truck Acts Funny- Very Good Vehicle Any How And Some Say Marry Money, But My Brother Believes (it's) Bad Business (to) Marry Money. I guess it's "believes" instead of "says" because now we know that the vestibulocochlear nerve has some motor function that involves equilibrium. I just watched all of the nervous system-related Crash Course episodes one after the other, and I will continue to do so in preparation for my lecture exam on Monday and my final exam on Wednesday. God bless everyone at Crash Course, I might actually pass.
My mnemonic to remember the cranial nerves is "Old Optimist Ocean Troll Tried Abducting Facebooks Very Glossy Vampire Attacking Hippogriff" That way you don't mess up the ones that start with the same letters because the second letters of the nerve are also included :)
OLd OPtimists OCcasionally Take The Anatomy Final And (auditory aka vestibulocochlear) Get Very Awesome Highscores (my friend and I made this mnemonic in med school because the first 3 O's can be hard to differentiate but you can keep it straight if you use the first TWO letters for the O's)
The superior oblique (innervated by the Trochlear nerve), actually works to move the eye down and out. Looking cross-eyed is the medical test to see if the muscle is working, as it isolates the SO. We had a massive debate about this in our Human anatomy lab that involved 4 demonstrators and the lead course lecturer.
So, I wrote a dorky YA type story to help me keep these nerves straight. It helps me remember what the nerves do too. Please read! At ONE time the SMELL of my mom’s cooking would call me into the kitchen no matter where I was. (I.OLFACTORY) But as I set the table for the TWO of us, it doesn’t make a difference. The SIGHT of the perfectly prepared food, does little for me. (II. OPTIC) My mom says, “I wish you’d invite that Ryan-boy over here, then we could have THREE places again.” I ROLL MY EYES. (III. OCULOMOTOR) I LOOK DOWN at my hands as I LEVER the turkey onto the serving plate, “What would I do that FOUR?” (IV. TROCHLEA) We sit to eat. I take FIVE bites before my mom speaks again. “You could at least TRY.” I want to tell her that I am, but I just keep CHEWING. I TASTE NOTHING. She doesn’t know about Bobby, or that this is the last time I’ll be eating at her table for awhile. After dinner, I go to bed, and wait. (V. TRIGEMINAL) SIX hours later, Bobby comes to ABDUCT me. I don’t actually know Bobby’s name, he’s an alien. Abducting is what he does. "Bobby" is as close as I can come to his actual name. A bright light shines into my room and I know it’s time. I LOOK RIGHT AND LEFT up the street before opening my window. (VI. ABDUCENS) Leaving my mom like this gives me a bad TASTE IN MY MOUTH, but I can’t keep a huge SMILE off my FACE as I climb out the window and into a light so bright it MAKES MY EYES WATER. (VII. FACIAL) I pull my VEST over my face, I HEAR that helps the transfer. He will probably have food for me, I’ll just tell him I already EIGHT. (VIII. VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR) Finally I come to rest inside the sleek silver spaceship, THE NINE. Bobby takes me into his arms and kisses me, I’m glad I wore lip GLOSS. Kissing him leaves a sweet taste in the BACK OF MY MOUTH. I heard somewhere that it could be a bad thing, but I don’t care. We finally pull apart. “You ready to go?” he asks. I nod. (IX. GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL) We head to VAGUS. We’ve been planning this for TEN months. I know Bobby is an alien, but I can FEEL IN MY GUTS that this is the right thing to do, and this CALMS me. (X. VAGUS) “Hey, I have something for you.” He puts a beautiful NECKlace on me. It has ELEVEN gems on it. “I noticed you didn’t bring any ACCESSORIES with you. I thought you’d like it.” (XI. ACCESSORY) We got married on the stroke of MIDNIGHT. He finally kisses me the way I wanted him to, with TONGUE. We kissed so much my lip-GLOSS was long GONE. (XII. HYPOGLOSSAL)
Marvelous episode! I was hopping that Vegeta and Goku fusioned as the two sympathic and parasympathic nerves systems do so to provide homeostasis but no...Too bad :p
If it hasn't already been mentioned, it should be "Finn" instead of "fin" in that context. I'm very grateful for Crash Course but as there are a lot of English learners who watch it, I worry when I see typos propagated. Spell check won't catch something like this so having several people proofread before taking an animation to "Golden Master" would be a good idea. Thanks for all you do, Crash Course Team (and supporters of Crash Course)!
The best acronym for the cranial nerves: Old Opie Occasionally Tries Trigonometry And Feels Very Gloomy, Vague, And Hypoactive. Very = Vestibulocochlear, the last And = Accessory (spinal). Or you could memory palace it with the number face.
1.Why are parasympathetic ganglion located closer to their effector organs ? 2. How does the distance of the ganglia matters ? Plz answer these 2 queries , it would be really helpful to me
I don't have a nmemonic per se but when I was studying the Cranial nerves it helped me to use them as a rating system for women. For example a Beautiful girl would be a Hypoglossus, and a very ugly girl would be an Olfatory. Even though It is dumb it helped me and my friends learn them pretty quickly.
OtterS OtterS OpiuM, TeaM TuB AlarM, FiB AS GiB, VerB SliM HaM Dunno if it helps, but it combines both letters. I think I *could* learn how this sounds if I needed it for a test... still, work in progress.
I never found those mnemonics helpful. What helped me most was learning how to test each nerve. For the most part their name describes their function then you can reason M/S/B from there.

Keep up the great work.
Oh oh oh to touch and feel vegetables gives vegetarians such happiness.
ttothelow you won dude
ttothelow The flow in that sentence is great!
John Smith CN VIII has multiple names, one of which is "vestibulocochlear nerve"
Connor Armstrong Wish I could take credit for it, but it is the cleaned up version of what I learned in med school :P
ttothelow Yeah, this is a good one. Congratulations.

Heres Mine:
I. On- Olfactory
II. Office- Optic
III. Overtime- Ocularmotor
IV. The- Trochlear
V. Tired- Trigeminal
VI. And- Abducens
VII. Fatigued- Facial
VIII. Adult- Auditory
IX. Gives- Glossopharyngeal
X. Very- Vagus
XI. Angry- Accessory
XII. Help- Hypoglossal
hey there..... i love all the videos of crash course... its being good for my studies.... thanks a lot....
Oh once one takes the anatomy final, very good vacations are heavenly
I just remember it as oooptafagvah (pronounced as upta fagva) that's a pretty decent word to pronounce.
The p is for pathetic nerve which is another name for trochlear and the a is for the spinal accissory.
Heck.... yeah.... I learnt a lot from that Nervous System episode.... thank for making that episode, and also uploading it :D
It's fascinating that the the brain doesn't register the second 'the', read again...
Marise Corrigan your right.
My right what?
Hahhhaha best two comments ever
Joey Fogarty Joey wtf man... I believed in you.
Had to read it 4 times to actually register "the the brain"
Is it preganglionic cells or fibers you are talking about? 02:15

My mnemonic to remember the cranial nerves is "Old Optimist Ocean Troll Tried Abducting Facebooks Very Glossy Vampire Attacking Hippogriff" That way you don't mess up the ones that start with the same letters because the second letters of the nerve are also included :)

this is genius, thank you

How to fix a broken parasympathetic nervous system?
I love my subscription to crash course it gets me through the days.
Your videos are seriously awesome. So helpful, thank you
I could watch a video in this series every day for the rest of my life.
Itd be soooo aweaome for you to do videos on drug prototypes.
(I.OLFACTORY)
But as I set the table for the TWO of us, it doesn’t make a difference. The SIGHT of the perfectly prepared food, does little for me. (II. OPTIC)
My mom says, “I wish you’d invite that Ryan-boy over here, then we could have THREE places again.” I ROLL MY EYES. (III. OCULOMOTOR)
I LOOK DOWN at my hands as I LEVER the turkey onto the serving plate, “What would I do that FOUR?” (IV. TROCHLEA)
We sit to eat.
(V. TRIGEMINAL)
SIX hours later, Bobby comes to ABDUCT me. I don’t actually know Bobby’s name, he’s an alien. Abducting is what he does. "Bobby" is as close as I can come to his actual name. A bright light shines into my room and I know it’s time. I LOOK RIGHT AND LEFT up the street before opening my window.
(VI. ABDUCENS)
Leaving my mom like this gives me a bad TASTE IN MY MOUTH, but I can’t keep a huge SMILE off my FACE as I climb out the window and into a light so bright it MAKES MY EYES WATER.
(VII. FACIAL)
I pull my VEST over my face, I HEAR that helps the transfer. He will probably have food for me, I’ll just tell him I already EIGHT.
(VIII. VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR)
Finally I come to rest inside the sleek silver spaceship, THE NINE.
I nod.
(IX. GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL)
We head to VAGUS. We’ve been planning this for TEN months. I know Bobby is an alien, but I can FEEL IN MY GUTS that this is the right thing to do, and this CALMS me.
(X. VAGUS)
“Hey, I have something for you.” He puts a beautiful NECKlace on me. It has ELEVEN gems on it. “I noticed you didn’t bring any ACCESSORIES with you. I thought you’d like it.”
(XI. ACCESSORY)
We got married on the stroke of MIDNIGHT.
O, On Our Trip To Africa, France, And Germany Very Soon, Hopefully.
This is one of the clearest and simplest mnemonics.
I can't believe I keep sleeping on this video series. It's the only thing that makes sense for health sciences.
OtterS OtterS OpiuM, TeaM TuB AlarM, FiB AS GiB, VerB SliM HaM
Dunno if it helps, but it combines both letters. I think I *could* learn how this sounds if I needed it for a test... still, work in progress.
I never found those mnemonics helpful. What helped me most was learning how to test each nerve. For the most part their name describes their function then you can reason M/S/B from there.
Best video ever!! Quick and precise!
You're the best Hank!!
Good news! You dwelled on how bad that mnemonic war for long enough that I remember it now!
I really need to take a break but I can't stop watching these videos...
may god bless u for the work u do
