  • I’ve finally decided to try some studies, after spending 10 months (so far!) teaching myself to play the recorder.
    I always wondered if studies would be boring… or difficult… or pointless?
    Turns out they’re none of those things, of course 🙂

    A few months ago I started adding scales and arpeggios to my practice and my general playing has improved. (doing exercises makes me sweat too) As my Mother-in-law says I need to learn to play the *recorder* not songs on the recorder. I need to learn *music* not songs. "Once you learn *music* the songs will come easily." She's been playing flute for 80 years so I think I'll follow her advice. I bought 95 Dexterity Exercises and Dances for Recorders in C by G. Rooda. Physically a small book but good content.

      I am coming to understand exactly what your MIL means- developing musicality is where it’s at! I think I need to check out some books by Rooda, a few people have mentioned they use/ like them, thanks!

    I think you are doing fine. I encourage you to find songs you like to play because if you like a song you will play it. Etudes and assignments are useful but if that is all you play you can burn out. Any piece you play will be beneficial to your progress. I recommend "Baroque and Folk Tunes For Recorder " by Leo Alfassy. It is full of nice music that is fun to play. Familiar tune as well others you be glad to discover. The songs in this book can be challenging and others will not but all will give you a lesson. I use this book for gig work.

      Sounds like good advice! I will aim for a mixture. I’ve always enjoyed scales and arpeggios (I may be in a minority there, I know!) but I think I do need to choose more things for pure enjoyment. I have a book of baroque music and I love most of what’s in there, so I’ll have a look at ‘Baroque and Folk Tunes For Recorder’ too, thanks!

      Thanks! I’ve really started to enjoy making this type of video, so I’m glad someone’s enjoying them! I find it so interesting to see how other people learn/ practice too.

    Hey Lauren. Glad you’re feeling better. You’re sounding great despite being out of commission for a bit. Recently came across that tenuto symbol on a flute piece and looked up the meaning. It’s an evil 👿 little mark and I keep panicking when I see it and do the reverse-cut it off instead of holding for full duration 😂. Oh well, practice, practice, slow down, and some more practice for me. I need to get proper instruction to sort out all the bad habits I’m sure I’m developing but I am enjoying the process of discovering things on my own. I’ve accepted “sounding ugly” as part of the development of a good tone and I think I’m improving (hubby may not think so, 😂).

      Hiya, thanks, I’m much better now! That tenuto mark- grrr, I do exactly the same and end it early, no matter where it falls. My flute teacher says sounding bad is all part of developing good tone over time. Our husbands will just have to suffer. Mine likes to point out his suffering at any opportunity 😂
      I’m loving having a teacher. I thought lessons would be all about getting told what I’m doing wrong, but actually she pushes me to try new things I wouldn’t have thought to try (with maybe a light sprinkling of moving me away from Bad Habits, haha).

    Also, a great video would be good songs to play on Soprano recorder for beginners! Early music/Folk and modern maybe? They are all over the place and the more simple ones aren't fun

    I've been using the books 95 dexterity exercises and dances by G.Rooda and basic recorder technique vol2 by Hugh Orr as my daily studies. I spend 15 min on each book before I practice repertoire.
    Also just did my AMEB grade 1 exam i think it went well, I loved the acoustics in the exam room. Just waiting for my results.

      I like the idea of a dance for dexterity, haha. I’ll definitely be looking into more study books, so I’ll check them out.
      Hope you get your results quickly, the waiting is the worst part! Fingers crossed for you 🙂

      An advice! That C is not common time actually it's a renaissance way to say that the tempo has base 2 or 4, when the circle is complete (Now is rare) the tempo is with a base of 3=)

    • @ClaythorpeMusic
      @ClaythorpeMusic  3 роки тому +1

      I really, really need to do better with articulation! I had zero idea about it when I first got started, but I’m trying to listen to as much recorder playing as I can so that I can begin to understand what to aim for.
      Well you may have two parts to practice, but that’s just double the fun 😉 I love the Brandenburg Concertos, bet it will sound great!

    What's the name of the studies book? And where did you find it? Could they ship to Brazil?

      Hi, the book is called ‘30 Simple Studies for Descant Recorder’ by Hans P. Keuning, published by Harmonia. I think there are also books of more difficult studies in the same series. I bought mine 2nd hand, but I know The Early Music Shop. com sells this. I think they ship worldwide. 🙂

    Are you able to print a PDF where you live? I mean, let's say you buy an e-book in PDF format... are you able to print that? :-)

    • @corneliaippers603
      @corneliaippers603 3 роки тому +1

      Why would I want to print? I prefer to use ForScore and play right off iPad or Laptop screen. Much better organization of all my sheet music, with annotations in layers, to show or hide 😉 Even with just a PDF viewer this is possible.
      I can print as well, also DIN A3 sheets double-sided in colour, but found this a waste lately.
