    How ironic this footage is named "Nigel Mansell's Greatest Drives" when this actually was one of the greatest drives from 3 time WDC Nelson Piquet.

      yep, one of the best drives ever
      with the amount of wing nelson had on compared to the v10's and v12's there was no way he should have made his tyres last

    Nelson did the GP without changing tyres, excellent foot!
    His B190 had so many less horsepower than Ferrari and McLaren that he was forced to race with a rear wing half as thick as his rivals. If in Japan he had won due to the withdrawals of others (as in Canada the following year), on this occasion he had shown everyone who Nelson Piquet was, and had made me jump out of my chair as I watched him ❤
    Obrigado Nelson!!!

    Great charge by Mansell, although with fresher tyres.
    But Piquet was the master here, even when Nigel was on him he was able to keep enough pace to fend off his attack. Great victory.

    As far as I'm aware Mansell and Piquet never crashed into each other. There was a lot of bad blood, slander and shit calling (by Piquet) but there was also true racing respect between them. That's for history. You don't get that now

    • @clubberlang589
      @clubberlang589 4 роки тому +2

      christschinwon The difference they were competitive out of the racing circuit and in the circuit, but knew in the end whoever collected the points or victories deserved it the most. Plus a huge difference is that they brought out the best of one another in different ways. So one cannot go without the other. Mansell and Piquet one of the great rivalries always remembered for entertainment value.
      Plus drivers during that period not only by Senna so much believed in sportsmanship behaviour. The best car one on the day and that’s it. Dirty tactics entered into the field during Senna Prost era. But before that you did what you needed to win. This race is a great example of that. It was slowly diminishing but elements of it came to the fore. But the new image of Formula One was taking root by the late 80’s to the early 90’s. It finally embedded into cheating and games in strategy at a team level. All this did was slowly progress and evolve with it to these depths. This is why Formula One after mid 2000’s I’ve shown no interest because of that. I come to watch old races even though I know the result, the entertaining value and suspense is still there.

  • @clubberlang589

    This race is great illustration of why Piquet always was and is better driver than Mansell. Here you see clear and vividly how dominant Mansell was for most of the race and Piquet just did enough to keep himself competitive. Then when opportunity presented itself and where Mansell burned out his tyres all because he was all about speed. This shows the difference in thinking 💭 capacities of both drivers and why Piquet ended up winning 87 season with 1/2 the amount victories to Mansell. Mansell was a tough racer don’t get me wrong but failed on strategy and competitiveness. This is what made Piquet the Champion he was.

    • @weallfollowmanutd
      @weallfollowmanutd 4 роки тому +2

      I'm not sure about that. Mansell was definitely the quicker driver, who charged more which possibly put more on the car.
      Piquet won in 1987 because he finished raced most races and Mansell didn't, because the car failed on him.
      If Mansell was racing in an era with better reliability, he would've beat Piquet quite convincingly. I honestly think Piquet was lucky that season and 9/10 Mansell would've beat Piquet every other time.

    • @clubberlang589
      @clubberlang589 4 роки тому +1

      Max G ok 👌 so 80-85. Mansell 2 victories only with Williams Honda towards the end of 85 season. Piquet amounted a total 13 victories and won 2 titles 81 and 83. So Mansell a great racer. Couldn’t manage a win with Lotus and was outclassed by Elio DeAngelos time and time again.

    • @weallfollowmanutd
      @weallfollowmanutd 4 роки тому +4

      @@clubberlang589 Mansell improved dramatically from the end of 1985. He wasn't the same before then. You only need to see his early start to Williams, where he was well off the pace of Rosberg. By the end of 85, he was already at the level of Rosberg, who was highly regarded enough, for McLaren to take him.
      Mansell pretty much dominated Piquet immediately.

    • @clubberlang589
      @clubberlang589 4 роки тому +1

      Max G I will grant you that Mansell was improving remarkably and was impressive enough to keep at Williams. Yes Nigel got the fire to win as in 86 and 87 respectively he amounted a total of 11 wins to Piquet 7 wins. But the difference is Mansell didn’t understand the delicate balance of competitiveness and consistency. That was the difference as Piquet said Mansell drives fast but a fast idiot. He did deserve to win 86 season. But with his 5 wins he should’ve had a commanding lead in the title if he was thinking intelligently. But that was evident by 87. 6 wins to 3 wins. But how come by the end Piquet was well ahead by 12 points. Ah yes that’s because Nigel Mansell has not mastered consistency and racing intelligence. He was fast in my view but to beat a great like Piquet you need to be on your game for most of the season. Piquet learnt this skill well enough in his Brabham years. He was in a field were you had Jones, Reuteamann, Prost, Villeneuve, Lauda and do I have to name the rest. They all were competitive one to another. All amounted points but it was about who could remain smart throughout the season. Plus reliability was a factor during those early years of development, especially in turbo engines. All the cars even from Ligiere were good enough to win. 82 season where Keke Rosenberg won the championship with 1 race win to his name, attest to this fact. So my point is Nelson was schooled during this period and he understood that delicate balance. Just because you’ve got speed and lap records, in the end does not make you the champion or race winner. This race in Adelaide 1990 proves my point. I’m saying Nigel Mansell time at Williams with Piquet as his side kick were vital years and yet again with Prost at Ferrari. But the difference is at Williams Mansell in 86 and 87 was given a lot of support while at Ferrari with Prost he was left to operate with equipment that was far less capable than in Prost Car. So in reality Mansell to his credit showed resolve and determination with whatever was handed to him. But it was those years in 86 and 87 that showed Mansell you need to be competitive for a good season. Winning is great but in 86 where he lost the season at last race. Well yes it was a tragedy, but he with the wins he amassed should never have put himself in a position where he needed to finish the race to win the title. He should’ve done enough throughout the season which he did not. Plus how many times was Piquet leading a race from 80 - 85 and was cruelty handed a puncture or engine failure or even a gearbox problem. So the argument goes both ways. My point is Mansell should be smart enough to realise speed is not everything and that is attested to the race Spa-Francorchamps Belgium where he attempted to pass Senna in a compromising part of the track. All he had to do was wait until he was in an advantageous position to do that. He thought Senna would crumble. Senna should never have put himself or the car in that position to begin with, but Senna at that point in time was a man who would put you in a compromised mindset, left it up to you to make that decision. Off course if you pulled it off, great but the chances where small. What happened he spun off and handed a lead to Piquet. What I’m saying is Mansell level of maturity to be World Champion was not there yet. He was close but as they say no cigar.

    • @weallfollowmanutd
      @weallfollowmanutd 4 роки тому +3

      @@clubberlang589 I can't really read on after, you wrote 3 wins to 6 wins. Mansell had nearly all the mechanical issues, yet he still won 3 more races than Piquet. He had mechanical retirements in virtually every race he didn't win or compete in that season. In Brazil, Monaco, Germany, Hungary and Portugal, he was in a position to either win or finish on the podium. Piquet finished those races and got an incredibly lucky result. Mansell absolutely trounced Piquet.

      +Gaucho
      Hardly "destroyed". Senna was a country mile in front when he went off (which was a gearbox problem not a mistake).
      Piquet drove a really good, smart race and he did have a brief return to his best form at the end of 1990 though.

    • @gaucho5073
      @gaucho5073 8 років тому +11

      +Anthony Papworth The same logic applies when Mansell or Senna won over someone else's problems. There many examples. Some1 was leading, then crash, goes off, quit or whatever, and "the great" Mansell or Senna "owned" the race.
      If you follow your logic, then Senna should have won every single race in 1991. But racing is much more than driving fast or having the best car...
      Of course Senna was in front! He had the best car, and was an excellent pilot! So what? How many times Piquet was leading and abandoned races?? Only from 1980-1985 I can quickly remember like ~10 races at least... and all the glory went to the winners of those races.
      Same thing for Prost and many many others since then.
      So the term "destroyed" is correctly applied by the other user. Piquet setup his car the best way possible, commited little-to-none mistakes and was fast all race long.
      Cheers

He spun twice, only gained the lead when Senna dropped out and even with the extra pitstop that allowed him to regain the lead he couldn't maintain the lead. Definatly not one of his best!

    Mansell & Alesi were exciting drivers to watch on some stages, but overall results doesn't exists due to tyre usage.. On the other hand watch Senna & Prost, they bring the results at the end..

    And then we have to listen this boys nowadays crying at loud "Lewis is the GOAT!!! Lewis is the GOAT!!!" They don't know a shit. Mansell with that Mercedes would've won the same amount of races and WDC than Lewis. Or even more. Mansell wouldn't have lost against Nico Rosberg.

    Eheh!!
    Piquet says that Mansell is a fast idiot. Not the cleaverest pilot, but surely he is fast. Piquet is in another league, three times champeon

      Piquet also said that Mansell deserved the 1987 championship but also added that he deserved the 1986 championship. 11 wins to 7 in Mansell's favour over the period 1986-87 suggests that Piquet was not in another league.

      Benito Lonard of course he was. Piquet was runner-up in his second championship. He has 3 world titles, the first two he didn’t even have the best car. He was revolutionary, with the warm blankets for his tyres, the pit stops, the adjustments of the wings from inside the car. He was someone who understands the mechanics of the car. He was the first turbo-champion with a 1500hp car on qualification mode. He was very consistent in an era when the cars were unreliable. He managed to win 3 championships in a very competitive era with drivers like Prost, Senna or Lauda. That’s why he ruled in the eighties. He managed to do this while having fun with countless beautiful girlfriends and living in a huge boat in Montecarlo. Thats living a dream.
      Mansell was just a fast driver in the best car, always complaining. A fast idiot, like Piquet used to say.

      @@manuelpedrosd No he was not in a different league. I am no massive fan of Mansell and was expecting Piquet to blow him away in 1986. It did not happen. Mansell beat him in 1986.
      As for complaining, it wasn't Mansell whinging for number 1 status in the Williams team in 1986. Frank Williams has since said, probably in jest, that one minute benefit of his 1986 road accident was that he didn't have to listen to Piquet whinging. Why did Piquet require number 1 status?

      Benito Lonard
      because that was the agreement he had with Frank Wlliams, which was forgotten when Frank had his acciddent and was far away from the team.
      Piquet belongs to a league of drivers that won three or more championships, like Stewart, Lauda, Prost or Senna. Mansell wasn’t.
      Mansell was a fast driver that in his late career arrived finally to be a world champion, after loosing several championships and races because he was an idiot. A very fast one. Like when he lost the canadian grand prix to Piquet in 1991 because he started waving to the public long before the race was over.

      @@manuelpedrosd Piquet is a 3 times champion who lost to Mansell in 1986. Only won 7 races compared to Mansell's 11 over the 1986-87 period and in the 17 races when both Williams finished a race during the same period he lost to Mansell 10 times.
      Their time together as teammates clearly demonstrates Mansell was in the same league as Piquet.
