@@TwinFlicks Well, it's simply a true statement. You do your homework. Your Ghost In The Shell video is how I found you and why I originally subscribed. That's a perfect example on why you are the best comparison channel. Beyond that, your content is always well thought out and articulated. You are killing it. I see you are eagerly awaiting the 4K's of The Abyss and True Lies (finally)! I think we all are.
Great review! I've seen the Blu-Ray version twice now and I honestly think the colors are dull, especially with the skin tones. The 4K looks like a completely different film, for the better. I don't know, it looks more alive. If 4Ks weren't so expensive right now, I'd buy this immediately.
People already complaining about the transfer for their upcoming Trainspotting 4K. I feel like they’re forgetting that these restorations have the involvement of the director, cinematographer, etc. They’re the ones who made it. It’s how they want it to look
I heard very similiar criticism towards the 4K restoration of The Godfather and The Matrix. Both had previous blu-ray releases that actually overdid the yellow/green tint a bit. And as a result, that version becomes ingrained in people's memories, even though previous releases didn't have it.
Right. I did a comparison of The Matrix on here and brought that out. How they used the green tint only for specific scenes. But on bluray WB washed the whole movie with it.
I have the Criterion 4K and the blu-ray and have been watching this movie on other releases (VHS, DVD, streaming) and it has never looked as good as it does on the Criterion. The blu-ray color grading looks as though it was shot with florescent lights and way too blue and cold. When I watch a 70’s movie I don’t want it to look like a UA-cam video I want it to look like film in the time period it was made. It’s a shame one review might make a lot of people pass on what in my opinion was one of the best remastered 4K of the year.
Trolls gonna troll! Nicely done! I've read the comments released by the respective labels about it being the same transfer, but I'd STILL like to see a comparison between the Criterion and Second Sight releases. Any chance you'll be getting the Second Sight disc, or are you taking their comments at face value?
At 3:00, you seem to imply that this release was sourced from Scorsese's print. I believe it was sourced from the original negative, and the print was used as a reference for color timing, etc. I don't think that's what you meant, but it can be unintentionally misleading.
This isn't a movie I'm interesting in (your channel is so good I watch reviews of movies I don't care about!), but it's interesting that some shots look better on the Blu-ray and others on the 4K. I can see why people are bagging on it. Interesting.
I don’t necessarily like the green teal look but this release does look amazing. Scenes look much better. I don’t understand all the hate. Some people just complain cause other people do.
The 4K is how Scorsese wants it to look in the video I talk all about that. This is how it looked in the theater in 73 and on other home media releases. Except for the bluray.
If we didn't have the bluray. You'd never know the difference because you'd have nothing to compare it to. The green teal was there since it's release ij 73. It was only the previous bluray and tv broadcast that changed it against Scorsese's wishes. Yes you are right, which is why I said after the bluray . Com review came our other joined in. Without realizing this is how its suppose to look.
Well done - I would never take any heed of any such statements they are designed to illicit comment Scorcese and his editor Thelma supervised this why would they not know what would be the best form to see this film. Glad I never saw that bluray to be honest. We should be glad that these restorations are undertaken at all as they have a considerable cost attached to them.
While I don’t own the Criterion 4K, the screenshots tell the whole story. Just look at the pool table shot that you described as “natural”?? Give me a break. Since when does pool table felt look close to neon green? I’m sick of Criterion apologists cutting this company slack. Criterion has messed up color on so many films that I’m barely supporting them anymore (5 years ago I was virtually buying the entire catalog by number). The company needs a major change at the top and go back to quality control levels of a decade ago.
The more I see these the clips the more I realise just how terrible this new remaster is. This is my favourite film and one that I have watched many, many times, mostly in the cinema , meaning that I'm comparing it to film prints and not to digital home video formats. It has never looked like this. Never. Whatever we’ve been told about the filmakers being involved etc, this remaster is defo not correct (take it from a guy whose seen it circa 50 times)
That's how it always looked, including the special edition DVD and theatrically. So if you're saying this is terrible, then you're also saying the movie has looked terrible since 1973. This is Scorsese's perosnal print with the same color grading. So what you've been seeing for years is wrong and not approved by Scorsese and your saying the director himself is wrong for his choice of color grading
I like the bluray better. Only time I have experienced green teal in my life is when I'm in a old building with old lighting. So, I don't believe in teal.
Great release. This and After Hours have been my favorite Criterion releases this year.
It's been great. I can't wait to see what Criteiron has next for us Scorsese fans
I'm still rockin the DVD version of Mean Streets
Wish that ending was brigther, we can't see the blood in both the versions. The whole 4K release is amazing though.
You are becoming an absolute favorite channel. Thank you for the integrity in all your reviews.
Thanks so much, man. I truly appreciate that.

So much better when it comes to detail. The Blu was well.. overly blue. I can't wait for my Second Sight copy to show up. This is a favorite of mine.
Some of the best reviews on UA-cam!
Well, thanks. I appreciate that.

Exactly. They are use to seeing the wrong color garding! What they are use to is wrong.
Getting the feeling that reviewers want 4K to look like whatever they see outside their window and not anything resembling "a filmic look".
I heard very similiar criticism towards the 4K restoration of The Godfather and The Matrix. Both had previous blu-ray releases that actually overdid the yellow/green tint a bit. And as a result, that version becomes ingrained in people's memories, even though previous releases didn't have it.

I am looking forward to the Second Sight release, but I have enjoyed watching the Criterion release.

Thanx for doing this comparison for us! I picked up the CC version. But the boxset is nice

Yes. Second Sight is sending me a copy, when I receive it, I will be doing a comparison.
@@TwinFlicks That's great! You have a new subscriber!
Welcome aboard haha. And if you have a movie request feel free to let me know

They sourced the color grading from his print
Waiting for the Second Sight 4k in January which will 100% have a better encode than the Criterion version.
Did you get Blackhat yet? I got it a couple of days ago and I'm VERY happy.
I think the blu ray looks better

If Criterion can’t do it right, no one can. I’m still waiting for Criterion to give us HD up-scales of their Armageddon and The Rock DVDs.
This 4K blows the Blu-ray away.

Absolutely 100% I want to the the film how the director intended us to view the film.

Bang on. Look at "Targets" - teal everywhere just like this one. Someone is really yanking our collective chain here.

It just a couple sweaty zoomers, who think a blue ray was a definitive version it clearly was not.
I always find it hilarious when the internet losers think they know better than professionals🤣
