Just the video I was waiting for on this boring sunday! Japan has always held some sentimental value. I enjoy the food, I enjoy the pop culture, and I've wanted to go my whole life, and now I have another great view of it from my favorite gaming youtuber! Thanks, and hope your time there is amazing.
As a long-time subscriber, it makes me happy seeing you live the dream and take the first step into the weird yet awesome land known as Japan. I've been in Japan (Kyoto) for eight months now, and though it can be overwhelming at times, it's not an experience to be missed. I hope you enjoy your time here. And while you're in the country, don't forget to try the japanese ice cream, especially the popsicles. It's the stuff of heaven.
I was stationed in Japan for a year and loved it. I tell the wife all the time that I want to take her and the kids there. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience Pete. Brought back some great memories.
So jealous of you Petey D: Japan seems so mysterious and awesome. I bet you could literally walk around for hours every day and find something new and interesting.
Pete dorrs channel is the last place I thought I'd drool over a car but that Supra at 15:44 :0 Great video Pete, love seeing what Japan is like through this perspective and not the typical flashy pictures we see of Tokyo and nothing else. Looks like an awesome place.
You are making me want to hop a plane to visit Japan again right now. :( Really cool to hear about your experiences/impressions. Reminds me of my first time to Japan. Take it all in and enjoy!
Watching this from the future! I didn't realize you lived in the Shizuoka area! Super cool, it's a great place. I've been feeling a little burned out on Japan life lately and this really reinvigorated me by reminding me of the simple pleasures of just walking around and enjoying little things like the streets and konbinis. great video!
One of my most memorable moments in Japan was getting literally lost in the neighborhood without a phone as I explored. I had to use a tower in the distance that I recognized from earlier as a landmark to make my way back where I needed to be. Place was empty, felt like I was in a video game, but it’s moments like that I will never forget.
Wow, it was cool seeing a normal Japanese town/city. It really looked like you were walking in an anime. Hope you are having a good time Pete, do a video with your host family if you can, we would love to meet them.
Good to hear you're enjoying your time here and that you're making an effort to get out and explore. Good on ya. I frequent Akiba quite a lot, so do let me know if you need some help finding Super Potato or any of the other retro stores there. Oh, and you can film in the retro game stores in Akiba, no probs.
Ahh dude I forgot you were going!! I hope you make more walking around videos like this, I really love Japanese streets and architecture so I could watch this kind of stuff for hours. Hope you're having an awesome time!
We had Qoo here in Germany many years ago. I miss it... I am learning Katakana right now to prepare for my japanese classes I'm trying to take a few month from now. It's really fun to read it. Awesome video, Pete! Looking forward to more!
I loved this video, Pete! It'd be great if you made videos like this even when you're back at home, just recording you walking around with your phone! Like a weekly blog where you update with your life, be it video-game related or not. Personally, I'd love that!!
because hes walking, and used to sitting around playing video games. this video makes me want to go to japan so bad. i would just sleep on a bench or something and walk all around every day. the culture is so different that just going to a corner store is interesting. and virtually no crime, so its safe
I lived in Okinawa Japan for 3 years as a kid, but I was to young to really enjoy it and we lived on a Military base. You would find it hilarious how tiny their portions are at Mc Donalds. You will also find it scary how many tombs fill up the island. It was an extremely small, confined place.
It was also a culture crash, even in downtown Tokyo there were lots of stores that just turned you away at the door or refused service because we were foreigners. Many older Japanese people don't speak a word of English. They'd just wave their hand and say "no gaijin" (no foreigners).
It's the cities and towns outside of Tokyo that is "the real japan" though, Tokyo is very westernized yet still "japan crazy", it's those more rural places like this that's the real vibe of Japan. I travelled around for 3 weeks, we spent some days in Tokyo at the beginning and end of the journey. Tokyo was the place I liked the least. It was too crowded and busy.
Super Potato is easy to find. Walk into Taitio Hirose Arcade. the one with the orange sign. walk into it and straight forward and exit out the back. the you're on the street where Super Potato are. just walk to the right and it's right there
I really loved walking around in Japan. Everything is just so similar, but different. You'll find Super Potato. It's on the western side of the main street, I think in the same building as that NHS/Taito arcade but in the back! You'll have to go upstairs. You can find the logo on the building. Google Maps is your friend.
You can, if you are using chrome right now there is a few japanese teaching apps in chrome store for free. Plus on itunes search japanese podcast and you will learn some phrases
I love watching these every once in a while. Relaxes me before I sleep.
same here
Pete Dorr was a Jtube and a video game UA-cam OG haha. Had to walk back down memory lane.
Wow the graphics in Shenmue 3 looks amazing in this video

If you go to the supermarkets you can usually get the same drinks you can find at the convenience stores, but for less than 100 Yen.
Great update Pete!
Waiting for PeteDorr to go Shen Mue mode...
Will you visit the area?
That is amazing! You have an incredible view of Mount Fuji! All I can see from my window is boring houses and some tress. :/ I wish I lived in Japan.
Very cool, enjoy the experience!!!

this video makes me want to go to japan so bad. i would just sleep on a bench or something and walk all around every day. the culture is so different that just going to a corner store is interesting. and virtually no crime, so its safe
Enjoy the trip. Wish i could go to Japan one day. Very impress by how clean the streets look, even on rural place, you find trash in North America.
Seems like a nice place, most of Japan i've seen (on the internet) looked very hectic and so on, but this seems like something more to my liking.
Awesome video Pete!

Thanks a lot for sharing this with us. I sure wouldn't have the balls to walk around Japan with a video camera.

I think I'd like to live in Japan for a few months, always wanted to go, the plane ride scares me too much.
wow you say that's more of a "rural" area, when i think rural here in Australia, what your in looks more like a suburb. Hope your having a blast Pete!
I live in Japan, and it's an awesome country.
