He's the Anti Nicolas Cage. The only role he's suitable to play is retiring/sidelined professional and the guy that's a grizzled vet in any 80's anime that dies saving the younger protagonist.
People give Nicolas Cage a lot of shit but he occasionally pulls out absolutely awesome movies. Sure a lot are flops but we can forget the flops and will remember the great films (like Mandy) for far, far longer. Willis.. it's all flops.
@@BlazingOwnager I mean, Willis was in RED, and that quickly became a classic heist flick, so I guess he had some decent roles, but most of them are pretty terrible and one-note. Hell even in RED he plays the same old retiring guy he plays 90% of the time.

Bruce Willis is like Nicolas Cage in that he'll take literally any role just for the paycheck, but at least Nick brings a special chaotic energy to his roles that occasionally makes the movie somehow end up working
I almost feel like Nic Cage chose to star in those weird B, C and D movies solely because he’d be more in charge on how he could play his character. His acting has been off the walls nuts lately, and it’s made the movies he plays in thoroughly enjoyable somehow.
cage can still act in the right role
Like Willy's Wonderland?
His new film "pig" is great. You gotta know that his "bad actings" were deliberate.
at least nick is fun, willis is just old and sad
Turns out he was diagnosed with dementia (FTD Aphasia) and was churning out straight to dvd movies to retire. I wish him and his family the best.
Yeah, i hope he can still live a fulfilling life with the time he has.
It's amazing that so few people acknowledge what a first-rate A-hole he is in RL.
That's not really a respectable thing to do though. He was already a millionaire and this is called selling out regardless.
@esbenm6544 It's not for him, he was banking up to leave as much as he can for his kids and family.
It was his management taking advantage of his illness. He was basically at a point where he was completely unaware of what was going on.
It's sad to see a great actor get reduced to these types of movies
Can you be a great actor without great acting skills?
He's not reduced to it, it's just an easy paycheck. He shows up for a day, films a few scenes, and boom some quiche.
Oh you are here too
Is he a great actor though ? He's definitely been a good actor depending on the movie but I feel great is a bit of a stretch.
@@Gatorade69 I actually think that he did have some serious acting chops, he's done action, he's done comedy, he's done drama. Don't forget that he didn't start off an action hero like Arnie and Stallone (Moonlighting), but can you imagine anyone else in the role of John McClane? It's just that post 2000 he's not been in any standout movies, a few decent ones but nothing that really lit the critics on fire.
Kevin Smith said working with Bruce Willis was the most soul crushing thing he's ever done, he said he's so dull and depressing in real life, I know Nicholas cage makes millions of weird movies but atleast he's a walking meme and funny af without trying to be

A lot of comparisons here to Nick Cage and how he's done well with bad movies, but I'd say that Nick Cage has embraced pulp movies (or they've embraced him) and has had success. Bruce Willis has just gotten old and tired and just doesn't care anymore. That's the difference and why Cage is loved.

Bruce Willis can't pull the older gentleman action hero; Liam Neeson and Denzel Washington can do it because they're good actors, Nicolas Cage is self-aware and can sell the self-parody in bad action movies, and Keanu Reeves has a quiet dignity that helps him portray action roles. Bruce Willis has none of these qualities.

How bout the movie red
LoL how Nicolas Cage gets away with it cuz he's so bad.
I bet the flasks Bruce was drinking were just him out of character, and it was easier to write him as a moonshine maker than edit them all out.
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't he almost like Steven Seagal now? He's starring in all these bad movies for the check, but on set they become nightmares to work with? I feel like I recall reading a bunch of others experiences with him that were mostly awful...
Only difference is that Bruce Willis was once good.
He's pretty infamous for having checked out and stopped caring going on about 15-20 years now. As to how he is on set I couldn't say as I've heard both good and bad.
Seagal is, somewhat, got a narcist pride in showing off (his aikido, gun handling, singing, etc)

Well the rumours are true, he was doing as many films as possible, irrespective of the quality, to put cash in the bank before retiring.
Just announced he is quitting acting after being diagnosed with Aphasia.
I'm thinking the aphasia actually might explain why the quality of acting is so poor as well. Reports he can't remember lines and all.
You can't be diagnosed with Aphasia. It's a symptom not a disease/injury. Alzheimer's, Huntington's, stroke, TBI those cause aphasia of three 3 types. From what's been reported me mostly has Broca's probably from a TBI from one of his movies and he never got the right treatment.
@@davidkanavel4241 people with broca's speak in broken English as the injury impacts the motor strip. Meaning he would understand language but have issues producing it. Even with hm this kind of language problem a person can't repeat lines at the rate he does.
Not saying he doesn't have an aphasia as it's possible he has a fluent aphasia but it's likely not broca's.

@@alexmammoth2916alrighty, and yeah I mentioned on other comment I have Broca's (injury from an explosion in the Army). I think the VA doctor calls it Mild Broca's Aphasia, about 20-30% I have a hard time putting out words. I tend to mime the damn word and people at work have gotten used to it. And then I do have problems with understanding speech too, I hear people talking but I miss alot of the damn words. I've learned with that to just watch people's mouths and almost lip read and it tends to help (if people are turned away from me I'm gonna hear about 20% of what they day)
I just suggested it as alot of the reports say he knows the lines just has a hard time saying them now, as these last few movies he has only a few lines. And listening to him he sounds like I do some times when I speak. And Bruce was one of the people my Dr was talking about of people who he thought had it (guess he was right).
@@davidkanavel4241 If you haven't watched Red Letter Medias thing on Bruce Willis movies, you'll also see he's been using earpiece where they speculate his lines are being told to him so that he just repeats what they say. That has nothing to do with the aphasia, but probably due to an ongoing dementia with problems remembering lines. (speculation about his dementia has been going on for a few years).

Bruce has unfortunately been on the decline for years. He's an alcoholic, and I'm not saying that to be a d*ck, he's literally an alcoholic. I've heard people complain that he shows up late to set or sometimes doesn't show up at all, and when he does he's often drunk or hungover, which you can kind of see in the films themselves. He's also apparently pretty rude, which I know is disappointing to hear when you grew up watching his movies like I did. A lot of actors have stated they won't work with him again. He was used by his people. He can't even speak now from what they're saying. Dementia has taken it's toll...it's tragic.
Imagine creating a movie with someone crawling in air ducts and casting the guy who's big movie hit have a famous scene in an air duct to just avoid making him go in.
I wonder if the original intention was for Bruce to crawl through the vents like John McClain, but Bruce told them that he wouldn't do it. From what I've heard, that seems like exactly the kind of thing that he would do.
@@dvt1393 probably... Bruce is kind of becoming a bald, thinner Steven Seagal with him seemingly putting minimal effort into his roles as an "action hero" where he doesn't actually do much action anymore.
Granted, Seagal believes his own lies about being the coolest guy who ever lived, and Bruce just seems bored to death and uncaring.
@@jcdenton2187 Yeah, I can see it, that's a good comparison. But, like you said, at least Bruce isn't deluded to the degree that Seagal is. 😂 I'm not sure which is the worse kind of has-been. The kind that still buys in to their own hype and has deluded themselves in to thinking that they are the best in the world, or the kind that has completely given up and doesn't give a single shit anymore. 😂
I mean, he was never a great actor to begin with. Not bad, but mostly just good for action flicks. Once he got too old for that and the new younger action stars took over the roles dried up because he isn't a great actor, so to keep paying his bills he just started picking up any film that would pay him what he asked, especially those where he could do as little as possible and still get a massive payout just to put his name on the poster; even if he's only in it for a couple of minutes. It's kinda genius actually. Especially since he knows almost none of these movies will be seen by anyone lol
Nail on the head.
I feel the same except for his performance in Pulp Fiction was really good in my opinion.
@@trvrt1cl3 he was nice on pulp fiction, but in my opinion it was just because Butch was a well written character, he didn't really do something impressive with his performance
Ngl he did a solid job for over the hedge IMO
I really liked him in 12 monkeys
Bruce Willis is trying to do the Nicolas Cage thing of doing almost everything offered to him. The major difference is, Bruce Willis doesn't care about doing movies anymore and it shows in everything he's done in last 20 or so years. While Nicolas Cage will give every single movie he's in his 110%
I don't know, Cage was barely awake in that new Left Behind movie. Granted, it is awful but he didn't get it his 20%, let alone 110%.
@@Nocturnalux With Cage I think it largely depends on the director. Good directors will let him be Nic Cage but still keep it reined in a little. Nic Cage could be made to give a fuck.
Bruce Willis has just completely given up.
@@gaiusjuliuspleaser Left Behind is Evangelical propaganda. There is no point in trying hard or even trying at all. No one cares, not the people making the movie and not the audience for whom it is intended.
In the movie one can feel Cage's loathing for everything about it, the "message", the holier-than-thou attitude involved, the horrible agenda behind it all.
@Asimpnamednutsack Indeed. But he didn't try, I cannot at all blame him: I wouldn't either.
I mean with the exception of Glass, Looper, Red 1&2, and Motherless Brooklyn I agree with you. The last 15 years he has been batting .200
And now we know the REAL reason why....and it just makes this video sad.
Why though? Him being sick and retiring from acting doesn't suddenly make these movies good lol
@@aristosachaion_ It's not about that, it's about how he did all this stuff to earn quick cash for his family (or he was persuaded to do these movies because of his condition) before his brain turned to mush.

I would like it if you reviewed one of the Percy Jackson movies as a guy who loves the books. Some of the worst book to movie adaptations you will ever see
Dominic Noble has a series on his channel called Lost in Adaptation where he does exactly that. I'm pretty sure he covered PJ a while back, if you're interested.
I watched the movies before I read the book, actually enjoyed it a lot
Best thing about that movie was introducing Alexandra Daddario to the world everything else was crap
i liked the movies as a kid but it was probably just because i was happy my favourite books got adaptations as a movie. i would love if someone redid it probably and would focus also on doing all parts of the book series. my favourite part was part 4 and I’d wish to see it as a movie sometime, but properly adapted

Since Bruce Willis has become completely retired due to the deterioration of his mind, and it was announced it has been going on for years, this video did not age well.
I love how even Coachella was able to do a really decent holographic image of 2Pac several years ago, and in all those movies about the future, they still glitching.
24:02 I feel like Elvis saying "who wants barbeque?" is more badass than Bruce Willis saying it in the movie.
I went to a talk by John McTiernan, the director of Die Hard 1 & 3. He explained that when he wrote the script for Die Hard 1, it was supposed to go to Richard Gere but then decided to go with Willis and rewrote the script for him. He said it was a difficult task at first because back then, he only played in movies where his character was an asshole so moviegoers didn't like him. Then, he had an idea : he made John McClane's character an asshole yes, but a self-hating asshole. DUring the whole movie he insults himself, always acknowledges when he fucks up etc... So people would relate more to him, the rest is history.
I think that's why everyone knows him as this retired cop and nothing else, it was when his character was the most appealing, and these kind of movies aren't really made anymore so he can't play that role
Wow trying to imagine Richard Gere in Die Hard is wild.
What a story, Mark

When Elvis’s editing is unironically better than most of the shit movies he reviews

Shooting “real” guns in enclosed space requires this “yelling” to reduce the damage done to the ears and brain. But in this case - obviously exclusively to ears.
well i were no real guns cause in movies they dont do that rlly
The fact they called it “new earth” is probably the most realistic name they could come up with. Remember we literally have a place on earth 1 called “new found land”
It’s the English version of Terra Nova, which is used in so many different sci-fi properties.
Yeah, the name is decent, I don't know why he thinks it strange. Millions of people live in a city state called "New York", that used to be "New Amsterdam" located in "New Netherlands". People colonizing things and calling them "New xyz" is pretty common in history. We suck at naming creativity.

@jay a lot of the criticisms in this video are still legitimate regardless of Willis’s health
@jay youre making excuses for him. The movies were terrible, and that’s the main point of this video. There are plenty of sick actors who don’t feel “forced” to be in terrible movies.
His illness only explains why is acting is so terrible. Does not excuse him for his greed and more than a decade of making terrible films

And now 7 months later we find out he's been dealing with Aphasia,,,
Some things I noticed about 'Cosmic -crap- Sin'
- its set 400+ years in the future yet Frank Grillo's driving what looks like a 2016 or so Ford pickup
- any shot of Brucey where you dont see his face, is a stand-in. Kinda obvious in the bar scene that its not him walking into that 20th century roadhouse
- the suits may look decent, but the helmets sure are a tight fit
- this movie has that thing often found in low-budget crap, where there's very few people around. Crowd scenes tend not to be so crowded. Gives the impression of a really empty world. I guess hiring extras for the day gets expensive.

The 5th element, Die Hard saga were so influential to me as a kid growing up in the 90s. To know just how bad his health is, it’s just truly heartbreaking and the manipulation and abuse that execs and producers did to him to get many of these abysmal films made just to have him in them is horrible. I’m glad his family and Demi Moore are taking care of him now. The guy has so much money somewhere around 4-600 million dollars, he doesn’t need to make more films.
