  • Does the SECOND Bond movie of each actor hit a "sophomore slump?" Joe Darlington, from Being James Bond, joins me as we explore this theory and evaluate whether 'Quantum of Solace' suffers from growing pains, OR is it "second to none".....?

    I will admit, I was a little disappointed with QoS on first viewing but in the last couple of years it has aged well to the point where I now enjoy watching it. I still believe the end battle needed more, like a epic chase scene getting away from scores of guards chasing them down, like the beginning of Goldeneye or at least like the escape scene from Blofeld's compound, rather than the secluded near empty hotel with a skeleton crew.

    For me QOS has aged really well, some of the action I find really thrilling more so that Spectre. It does feel 20 minutes of story telling was left on the cutting room floor. I am pleased Craig's performance was mentioned as this is my fave version of him and yes, a great question, can you imagine this version of Craig's bond in Skyfall and Spectre, it would be great, in my opinion at least ha! Great discussion as always.

    I can watch the first 30 minutes over and over. Great action, coolness, and I like the clothes but then it falls apart....and how do you follow Casino Royale? I really love the Bourne ending where he confronts Vesper's lover/blackmailer. This took years because I left the theatre that day wondering how they could have just pissed away all the goodwill from the previous film. No one walked into Casino Royale loving or even liking Daniel Craigs casting as Bond...and yet here we are with him considered to be arguably the second best 007 in movie history. I will say this...I would watch QoS on repeat a lot sooner than I would Spectre.

      There didn't seem to be much of a plan for Quantum as White escapes [and fades into the background] pretty much straight away. I think the film would have been vastly better if White was the main villain not Green [make Camile his mistress instead as we don't know a lot about White at this time] as he's far more charismatic and Bond already has a grudge against him. You can still have him escape at the end for later films if needs be.

    As far as Mathis being left in the dumpster, would you rather Bond had left him on the street? Propped him up against a lamppost? Or drove to the Chilean desert with him in the backseat?
    Mathis spent his last moments on Earth consoling Bond [ "We forgive each other. Forgive her, forgive yourself " he tells Bond, not wanting Bond to blame himself for Mathis' death, or seek vengeance. He was trying to give Bond a sense of peace and closure. ] Bond then gave Mathis the closest he could to a funeral, then took his money to make it appear as though it was a robbery to whoever found him first, then told Camille, " He wouldn't care " , knowing Mathis would understand Bond's decision to " bury" Mathis in the dumpster.
    Quantum Of Solace is my third favourite Bond film of all time. It's both Bond at his most stylish, in the Tom Ford suits, at his grittiest/ most bad ass. Spectre is a hole in the ground, it's the only Bond film I actively dislike.

    Solace is, along with Tomorrow Never Dies, the one Bond film that has climbed through the ranks. For many years it was my most disappointing Bond film, but now I look on it as a fast paced mess of a film, that perfectly captures Bond’s psyche in the film. The brief encounter with Fields, the score, the action set pieces (with the exception of the boat chase) is all to keep up the momentum, as Bond needs to keep up momentum in his quest for vengeance. The song meanwhile is still the worst of the series.

    I first saw Quantum in the Odeon theater in Leicester Square in London in Nov. of 2008. What a letdown! At the end of the movie, when the Bond theme plays and the gun-barrel animation happens, I remember thinking, "Oh yeah, this is a James Bond movie!" because it didn't feel like a Bond movie to me during the past two hours. The writers strike is so evident all through this movie; for example, naming a character "Strawberry Fields" but never mentioning that in the script until the credits. The writing is very sloppy. Quantum was the last Bond movie to be reviewed by Roger Ebert, and I remember Ebert panned the film, giving it a thumbs-down, saying of the Bond girl, "Camille? That's it? Camille?" and Ebert was right. Everything about Quantum is so mundane and "un-Bondian". Quantum lacks all the cool style, the sex, the glamour, the travelogue, the great theme song, the thrilling set (think volcano lair in Only Live Twice), the tough henchman, the suspense-filled villain-scheme, etc. Quantum is a completely joyless movie for me. I seriously rate it even lower than Die Another Day.

  • @alexlamas6324
    @alexlamas6324 3 роки тому

    I must say as a Quantum fan, Joe Darlington‘s criticisms are the most coherent and thoughtful I’ve ever heard. In Quantum’s defense, I felt it was the “art film” of the whole Bond series. Daniel Craigs portrayal is most deep and introspective of all his performances. You feel his pain within, although not always outwardly expressed. This film gave us the most complex psychological understanding of who Bond is and for me probably the most three-dimensional portrayal of the character that has ever been. Thanks guys, it was great and it left me wanting more. Is there anyway you can do a longer version of this?

    • @katemara667
      @katemara667 2 роки тому

      Totally agree about Daniel's performance in this one. It's an introspective performance that conveys complexity. Despite its flaws, a lot of the film feels pleasingly emotionally connected. That chaotic car chase is the perfect expression of Bond's grief-fueled rage, his violence feels connected to what he's feeling. When he's interacting with other characters he's more shut down and stoic, but in the fight scenes he's letting everything out, expressing his emotions in the action (just like the parkour chase in Casino expressed his relentlessness, brute force and ingenuity) and it's compelling to watch.
      Compare that to his worst performance in Spectre. I often don't know what he's meant to be feeling. He feels so two dimensional. What is he thinking from scene to scene? Probably 'My leg hurts and this script is balls!'

    I think it's underrated. It's not what it could have been, clearly, but tonally it was on the right track going darker and more realistic rather than in the Die Another Day direction. Up against installments like that one, Moonraker and View To A Kill, Quantum looks like high art. I've never been a fan of jump cuts, but Bond has usually been very current, good or bad. The Bourne movies were in vogue, so a movie like this made sense at the time. When the series goes too much for what's in fashion, it tends to fall flat, but it's not like that mistake hasn't been repeated over and over again.

    Interesting discussion. Here is my completely honest opinion: I've always loved QoS and I never understood why people who enjoyed CS didn't like it. It was, to me, simply the 6th act of CR, and it was one of the few times where I walked out of the cinema not being disappointed by a sequel to a film I loved. CR still ranks first among the Craig films for me, but QoS is a close second, and only because it wouldn't have worked as a standalone without CR before it. These two films made me a fan, and so I was disappointed when they didn't continue in the same vein, but rather decided to concede more to the more clichéd Bond approach with a more gadgets, more obvious plot holes and the typical disfigured insane villain (don't get me wrong, I still think Skyfall, Spectre and NTtD are fun flicks and I enjoy watching them, just not as much as the first two). What you say it true, I love the hard-hitting action heroes (McQueen yes, but also Jason Bourne), so that is my jam. I particularly didn't like that they didn't fully commit to making the movies interconnected and abandoned Bond trying to dismantle this relatively realistic Cartel all the way through, and instead everything ended up being reduced to a personal vendetta of Blofeld against Bond (I think this is what I hate most about the Craig-era). I loved Spectre until Blofeld came in, then it went haywire. I understand anyone who says that CR and especially QoS aren't really a traditional Bond movie, but then that is what I enjoyed about them. I can't wait to rewatch QoS now. Thanks for the discussion! Oh, and as a woman and a feminist, Camille was already stroking his cheek in a rather non-platonic fashion, so that kiss is totally fine in my book (and I have a rather strict book).

    • @katemara667
      @katemara667 2 роки тому

      Yes! I agree with so much here. I hated how they dropped the continuity from CR and QoS and rebooted into the dour, cliched cartoon world of the Sam Mendes films. Craig's era didn't need a Blofeld or SPECTRE, The Quantum cartel was a much more interesting and realistic idea, fitting well with the grounded feel of the first two films. There seemed to be a weird fad in movies and tv shows for making everyone somehow related and every mission personal.
      I'm with you on the kiss: it never felt creepy or pushy to me. It felt like a nice character moment. There was just a hint of raw desperation in it, Bond seeking a tiny bit of comfort/affection, allowing himself a second of emotional vulnerability.
      Though I do wish they'd used the Gemma Arterton's character better, both giving her more to do and furthering Bond's character arc. The s*x scene always felt wrong emotionally to me. They could have used it to show how much Bond is grieving for Vesper, trying to drown his sorrows in another woman just as he's doing with alcohol.

    This is totally off-topic. But what do you think of the idea of you doing a new series for your channel? It would be called something like: "Dining Like Bond." You would eat and try out everything Bond from the novels ate and drink, as well as everything he ate and drank from the movies. After each meal you would give your review/thoughts on it etc. What do you think of that idea?

    I'm with Joe, best viewed directly after Casino Royale as Bond is hurting after
    the death / betrayal of Vesper.
    Quantum is one of those movies that has some good scenes but is by no means a classic Bond movie.
    It could be said that rather than Greene Bond is at times his own worst enemy.
    Personally, I came out of the cinema the same as l did with Spectre, a bit underwhelmed / disappointed.
    Also a shame Olya Kurylenko's character was so poorly written.

    Late to the party, not sure how I missed this one. I think Quantum gets better over time and because Daniel is near his best as Bond in this one, and probably looking the best he has in any of the films, it has that going for it. I think though if you're realistic, it has a weak premise, weak villain, so so Bond woman and spastic direction. But, as Joe says, if you put it in the context of a larger story, and realize how poor Spectre was, it jumps up a bit. I definitely wouldn't say it's a great film by any means, unless the yardstick is style. It knocks it out of the park there. Great work, gentlemen. Be safe and thanks for all you bring to the Bond community.

    Suggestion for a theory on the 4th ones: Does the 4th film jump the shark?
    You have already pointed out that the 3rd film is usually where both actor and writers find their sweet spot. So when it comes to the 4th film, the question is: Where to go next? In the Bond franchise, this has been repeatedly answered with raising the stakes and going bigger, to the point where they really push the audience's suspension of disbelief. And more often than not, this is to the detriment of the movie.
    I know you have already covered Die Another Day and Spectre in the "Last = Worst" series, but you could review them from a new angle. There is a common denominator here with at least Moonraker that you haven't discussed yet.
    Also, as soon as No Time to Die comes out, Spectre is retroactively disqualified from the "Last = Worst" series, so you need to find a new reason why it failed anyway. 😉

    For Your Eyes Only had Bond acting as a partner to a women out for revenge but then had to force a romantic relationship between the two at the end. To Quantum's credit, they do a similar storyline but at least commit to the woman and Bond just being partners in there respective quest.
    Unfortunately, they don't commit to it fully as it feels like Fields was added into the script so the film would not be without Bond getting a love scene [understandably Gemma Arterton doesn't look back on the role fondly and I don't blame her as it's a bit of a waste of her talents].

    • @katemara667
      @katemara667 2 роки тому

      I wish they'd used Gemma Arterton's character better, giving her more to do both as a character and furthering Bond's arc. That s*x scene could have been used to show how much Bond misses Vesper, he's trying to drown his sorrows in a another woman just like he does with alcohol, but it's not working. Seeing him turn away afterwards, looking emotionally shut off and unhappy would have given the scene more impact and made it less gratuitous.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja 2 роки тому

      @@katemara667 Agreed. The writing for the character is something Arterton herself has expressed displeasure about in hindsight. That scenario would have also worked in the context of Craig's version of Bond. He seduces but doesn't sleep with Solange before Vesper and between Vesper and Madeline [and probably in the five year time skip in NTTD] his Bond does seems to use sex in a 'drown his sorrows' way [like in his recovery in Skyfall] without really getting much out of it if he has no emotional attachment to his conquest.

I absolutely adore Dr. No, and it’s been a very long time I think since I’ve seen Russia. Doubt I’d like it better than Dr. No, though. Dalton only did two, both fantastic. With Tomorrow, I might actually like it a little bit more than GoldenEye. Though I had a great time with GoldenEye recently. Of course Casino would’ve been hard to beat regardless. So Joe’s theory I think does largely hold up.

    Quantum of Solace is the best Bond movie to date. James Bond is undoubtedly a very weak secret agent. An agent who tells everyone his name and almost everyone knows he works for MI6. This character would not have a long life in the real world of espionage. In addition, according to Daniel Craig, the character looks unsophisticated and cumbersome. Jason Bourne is an undercover agent who doesn't even exist. Agent 47, Hitman, is a real threat, even to Jason Bourne. Quantum of Solace brought Bond closer to the character of a bodyguard from MI6, to an operator who moves in the field and it is believable that he would survive. The film has a good story.

    The editing in QoS is still a major problem for me. Not just the overly frenetic action scenes, but even quieter moments have a dizzying amount of cuts and poor camera angles that don't tell a visual story in a pleasing manner. I find QoS a hard film to look at. Also, a pathetic villain. Bond has the same arch as Casino Royale. And it being reconnected later that Quantum was merely a division of Spectre makes the film almost superfluous.
