  • When Brave Girls’ “Rollin’” went viral in February 2021, it was one of the best underdog stories in K-pop. After four years, the 2017 song was rediscovered by K-pop fans and the public alike. From there, Brave Girls’ career finally took off after 10 years in the industry.
The girls are now at the forefront of K-pop female groups. They’re on a slew of CFs (commercial films), their songs are getting tons of views, and they have a high power celebrity ranking in Korea. Brave Girls’ story is regarded as one of the best feel-good, comeback stories in K-pop.
But how did a once little-known song in “Rollin’” went viral out of nowhere? And how did a little-known group surge to sudden stardom?
Let’s break down one of the best comeback stories in K-pop history and lessons we can learn from it.

It's because Brave Bro made one "mistake" business-wise, he got attached to the girls and the group so he wanted to take care of them. I'm glad it all worked out for everyone in the end, but other more conventional companies with cutthroat and corporate-type leaders definitely wouldn't do that.
But yeah, this just adds even more mystique to the group, the fact that they even have a CEO that was willing to spend his own money to support a group that has probably never made the company any money. Truly a modern day fairytale.

i think a lot of k-pop fans are also supporting them because brave girls is a well known name in some k-pop circles. many of us remember rollin's release and how GOOD it was and how we knew it could've been a hit, brave sound picked up on the small hype the song got from some international k-pop fans and released a new version a few years after its original release, but that fell flat too. but we always knew the song was too good to be buried, it would eventually shine someday. and it sure did! the members being super talented, funny and absolute sweethearts will help further their career and i hope brave brothers has another gem up his sleeve for their next cb

Most CF and products promoted by them are sold out
The title should remain Nation's ROK Group
Currently Rollin has earned over 260 PAK, Making them the first ever girl group to reach #4 in Most perfect All Kill in Kpop history. With Zico, IU and BTS.

My favorite part of this story is the fact they performed for an audience who didn’t pay them well, but they chose to perform for any. the ROK army is often not performed for since the low pay , but I heard In a interview of BG they performed 100 times for the ROK army and even took a boat to a camp of soldiers who were remote.
It’s those fans love that is so infectious. There’s no way you can’t watch that compilation video and not feel joy and be touched.
I’m excited to see a group that defies kpop norms

i think there’s a growing frustration among fandoms about alleged mistreatment of their bias groups by established agencies. here’s a struggling group with a producer who obviously cares for them and it definitely struck a chord.
aside from EXID, i also think that their relationship with Brave Brothers is kinda similar to that of Bang PD and BTS and there is a growing clamour for this kind of dynamics between talent and management from the public.

Just my opinion but I think alot of the Brave Girls late success could be attributed to the under dog story and the ladies being generally likable and relatable to the public that has decided to support them. The bigger question is who is supporting them and responsible for all those music show wins? Has it translated into commercial success in terms of music sales?
I don't know if this is repeatable or can be manufactured. What I see they have going for them is a very positive image. Their songs are generally catchy and have a good pedigree as being produced by well known hit song writer. Plus they sing live which is a plus in my opinion.
But the biggest influence in my opinion is their resurrected image. These ladies give off a very "pure vibe" that seems genuine. You all know how powerful the fickle Korean netizens can be. They can easily make or break careers.
All their appearances on variety shows have also helped their image. I can recognize them.... As opposed to the multitude of 4th generation girl groups that have recently debuted. Sort of a chicken and egg situation. But in the past, the Brave Girls were lost in a sea of look and sound alike groups.

They make me so excited plus the fact that there older also makes me very happy to see, Ive been a fan since just after high heel came out and my gosh did I love rollin back then, brave girls has such good songs and where actually doing quite well in there early years with the original lineup, there where rumors that they had made a full album and all the songs on it had been given away to other groups in 2013/14, apperantly the original lineup had recorded alone by sistar for there 1st album, which I can see being done by brave girls, then there was rumors that the comeback that was planned for 2018 had been given to Uni.t so instead they did a rerecording of rollin as the 4 member lineup, there story makes me so happy and I'm excited for there future, it wasent till the re-recording of rollin did I realize that brave girls wasent that popular at all, anytime I would mention them to other kpop fans people would be like which group is that and it made me sad. But they got there and I'm so happy. Fun fact they just broke a record set by girls generation on melon with gee holding the number 1 spot on melon for girl groups, it's something like 5 or 6 weeks now.

For sure and it's great to see Brave Girls to suddenly experience success after 10 years. It goes to show just how many groups get lost in the shuffle, since Brave Girls debuted when groups like SNSD, 2NE1, AOA, Girls Day, 4Minute, and others were so strong.
That's awesome that they just broke Girls Generation's "Gee" record. Even if Brave Girls lose momentum (I hope not) later on, they broke so many records in 2021 that they'll be remembered in K-pop history.

Love that despite the name, Brave Girls consists of 4 WOMEN. Yuna, their maknae just turned 28 which is ancient in the KPOP GG world. So tired of the nearly anorexic teenage GG that are cranked out by the Korean entertainment companies. I am not criticizing the young idols, rather their companies that put so much pressure on often teenage girls. BG are women who are confident and comfortable in their own skin. It’s so refreshing. I also hope their maturity will help them endure their new burden of fame.

He gives them bags just cause they didn't disband yet. I mean he knew it was his fault too but he didn't have to give them an allowance from his own bank account either!
I think him doing good pays off. He made a good decision putting them on the military stage.

I've read and followed people cover Brave Girls' underdog story so much that I can now memorize it.
The difference you put into your video is your personal analysis, which I found interesting, and I appreciate it.
You'd done an excellent job in that regard!
I agree with your points that smaller companies need to look for other ways to promote since their budget is pretty limited.
Truth be told, Brave Girls are really talented and they look really healthy, so much so that I think it gave them a refreshing feel?
And who could forget about the "stingray dance"? I've never seen something like that in KPOP before. It's fun and exciting at the same time!
Rollin' was probably just way ahead of its time. Its concept of the time did not mix well with the feel of the song too.
All in all, I guess the world just needs a good, old underdog comeback story amidst this terrible pandemic!
Btw, Rollin' may not be eligible to be SOTY 2021, but we all know it has already won it in our hearts.
Oh god, can't June come faster?
I'm off to stream Rollin' for the 1000th time...

The key for their continued commercial success is to expand their local fanbase, especially the female Korean segment (this segment in Korean fandoms is the real driver of CD/digital sales, streams, and merchandise sales in ROK). It's troubling to hear that some female Korean fans have been driven away from Brave Girls because of hostile male Korean fans who are resistant to any innovation that they deem "feminist" or "misandrist." I hope Brave management and the members themselves will exert more effort in making their general fanbase more inclusive.
After they manage to solidify the local segments of their fanbase, then they can invest more in attracting more foreign fans from outside ROK.

Can we just appreciate that their CEO used to work in YG entertainment and was also a gangsta ( I heard) and when he left YG he said he was going to create his own company and group & make them famous in which YG embarrassed him on a YG show saying that would never ever happen as it’s been too long and that brave brothers should stop giving away good songs to other groups like 4minute and AOA

Now I’ll be looking forward to DKB’s story. Brave might’ve neglected BG over them but that doesn’t mean they never gone through trash.
    They
    • Got and still get lots of hate for their looks especially Junseo therefore that’s why he had on a bucket hat for their debut and 1st comeback (but I’m glad he doesn’t wear one anymore)
    • Things started to get better when BG went viral and BG fans started to discovering and supporting DKB because of it
    • Were called “IKON copycats” just because they had red and fire in their debut teaser. IKon didn’t invent the color red or fire lol. “BTS fans” were also hating on them, giving them death threats, saying they’ll never succeed, etc etc etc (They’re 100% wrong)
That’s all I can think of for right now
But I hope things don’t go downhill when the new gg debuts ❤️ instead I want him to have faith and keep supporting all of the groups ❤️

I'm a little confused at the timeline. I was in Korea in 2018 visiting Busan. I was in my hotel room and found the K force Kuk Bang channel on television. It happened that a Brave Girls show for the ROK Army was broadcast. That was the first I ever heard of Brave Girls, and now they my second favorite K Pop band after Twice!

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  Рік тому +2

Ahhh no problem! Brave Girls actually performed a lot for the Korean military well before 2022. There's a show called the K-Force Special Show, where K-pop stars perform for the Korean military members. It's like the USO tour for US military.
Brave Girls performed on about 72 times from 2017 on on the K-Force show. From these numerous appearances, the girls built a cult following among military members that served from around 2017-2022.
While the girls weren't really known to the Korean public, the army is a vastly different story. They became known as the "army's girl group," or "guntongryeong" in Korean (President of the military).

The comeback story of Brave Girls & their endurance & Brave Brother's persistance in supporting also resonated with me. I felt hope. Yet I thought on it for quite some time. Why were some more videos more popular than others. Surely the virtual Milliboard & the youtube video compilation of their performances had plenty to do with it. Yet what was the the turning point? What was different about those performances? Secret sauce formula = show the audience. When the audience is involved it becomes a feeling of being part of something larger than oneself. Secret sauce = show the audience -- or at least it seemed from comparing with other girl groups with close to as much fame. Secret sauce formula for even larger fame = show an even bigger audience & the group interacting with the audience. Simple. If there is a concern about people not wanting to be shown then plenty of times it has been skirted by simply panning out & showing the sheer size of the audience from a distance. There is a feeling from such a moment. Every once in a while turning the camera towards the audience when the audience is dancing or cheering makes for a more engaging moment. It is a theory. Intent is to for Brave Brothers & Brave Girls to keep & have consistant success. If I knew Brave Brother's email address I would have sent it directly.

i like to hear stories like these but also not every time i support those groups i to do my research and if their songs are in my taste then I will get into the groups lil by lil and their characters before literally standing them, I cried for real when i heard and learn more about Brave girl's story of surviving those hardships and I am thankful that they are getting what they deserve now and hopefully continue on in the future and yes this does remind me of Hype back in the days and the boys BTS as well as their CEO (the CEO of brave girls really do give me hitman bang vibe like if there's no door or window make one like how hitman bang make bts diary/variety shows and use youtube and vlive and here brave girls CEO thinking outside the box military hehe cool cool i mean i would love this song too if i was in the military. In my humble opinion, a CEO that cares and thrives to bring his/her artist to the surface and an artist that never gives up but keeps fighting and being humble will one day appear where they are meant to be. Brave entertainment will one day be big too one day cause these girls are talented and just gotta say their smiles are just ugh adorable like its loveable just from their smiles i can just stan them hehe lots of love and stay safe bye bye
