The deer knew you were there the whole time. He just waited until the last second to run off so he can brag to his buddies how much of your time he wasted.
I was in tears at the ending!!! Just a mix of emotions! Sympathizing with the struggles on BOTH ends! Can you imagine a mountain lion patiently stalking to feed her babies? The failures are numerous. I will always pray for the hunter’s success but I’ll still tip my hat to the quarry.
That intro of the young boy walking through the grass, barefoot, was the perfect introduction. Reminds me of the good ole days getting so close to animals it was crazy.
You are not kidding , Coy. That is a terrific intro. In my younger days, I had a 6 point buck sniff my boots I could sit so still against a tree. I gave up tree stand hunting for getting my boots on the ground for more exciting hunting.
Thank you for bringing us along on this trip. Hunting with traditional gear is a challenge to say the least. Capturing it on film for us at home makes it even more challenging. Great video, I appreciate the time and effort Clay. You have A fantastic attitude towards finding reward in the pursuit as much as the harvest , but I know the sting of a failed stock or missed shot as well. You handled it like a true ambassador to our life style of being a hunter .
That was INTENSE! Success and failure are purely relative. Your narration over these events are valuable and inspirational. Spoken like a man who understands that life is all about the little things, which most of us overlook or take for granted.
Glad to see you still at it! A fight to retain basic freedoms is on horizon....if it goes down Pennsylvania got your back! GODBLESS YOU AND FAMILY MY BROTHER

I honestly dont watch videos on hunting but i am glad I watched yours! I have been into trad/primitive archery for close to 25 years and I find most people dont get it. Its a great sport we do and your video said it all!
AWE SHUCKS! But enjoy it Clay. I'm 66 years old and the way you're doing it in this video is a young man's game. Everything passes with time, knees, back, and feet. But the drive doesn't go away, nor the memories. I envy you just a little bit. Keep on truckin'. Dang! I wish you'd have gotten that big buck!
Thanks Clay, for a great video. I like it that you say "all you can do is tip your hat" I messed up a shot on not only the biggest buck of my life, but my first buck with a recurve this year. The chase continues...
I'm just now getting into the sport but want to learn as much as possible and begin with hunting small game, one day at a time. Thank you for sharing this Clay.
Thrill to watch Clay. From the origin of the bow to the shared camaraderie of deer camp, to the wilderness experience presented in the stalk. Keep it up!
Complete respect to you man. This style of bow hunting is just next level stuff. Getting that close to a big buck in itself is a blessing. Keep it up good stuff!
Clay, you have created a masterpiece! This is one of the absolute best things I've ever seen on UA-cam. The production quality, the editing, the content, the soundtrack...just fantastic! None of us have any idea the quantity of sheer work and effort this 21 min video required. THANK YOU for taking me along on that hunt. It was so fun, and I was rooting hard for you, but nonetheless you did NOT fail! The knowledge and experience you gained from that hunt will be an important part of your imminent success. I hunt much like you, but in the eastern woods, and with a compound bow. On that note, I've decided the compound is a very poor choice for this kind of hunting. I would love some input on how to go traditional. Great job!
Thanks Jake, as far as going trad goes, just pick up a stickbow and start shootings. I shot a compound to start with as well. But stick bows were just a lot more fun for me.
That's awesome you and Andy Ponce hunt together. You are both my favorite UA-cam stars. I've learned a lot from you both and think it's awesome you know each other and hunt together. Small world!
@@zack_rides_bmx A lot of us have been there...that one, tiny little thing that needs to happen for the kill...aaaand it doesn't happen. That's why we call it hunting, not grocery shopping. ha ha
Man, what a heart breaker of a stalk. I have been there on many times. I don't think I have ever been successful on a stalk with a bow. Have been on a rifle stalk or two, but never with a bow. Just last October, I was there with my recurve and just as I was ready to pull the bow back, I could feel the wind hit the back of my neck and, well, you know the rest of the story. I feel your pain and it really makes me want to go back. Great hunt.
You’ve got no idea what this video did for me. Just yesterday morning I had an opportunity to take a massive buck with my bow, and I spooked it. I haven’t been able to get it off my mind but it helps knowing that it happens to just about everyone. Thank you!
Great work Clay! I need to get one of my knives to you to take out on your hunts. Thanks for all the helpful information and entertaining videos. I really enjoy your book as well.
Dang Clay! I was on the edge of my seat at the end there! I'm not sure if he even saw you when he was staring in your direction! Nothing you can do but get out there again. Thanks for sharing and the hard work.
Sir, I have never thought about the possibility of shooting with my bow tip between my leg. Thank you for this tip and it was duly noted. After watching your videos and a few others, I have made colorado over the counter elk hunt added to my list for 2021. I figure it will give me some time to get in better shape and get in some more shooting time for the trip. I am still planning on making my own bow for the trip, I plan to start making one right after this season is over here in my state. I also appreciate you showing us the misses and letting us know what happened, I would have never thought about trying to shoot like that, so thank you. Thanks for your videos being made so real. You rock sir. I love the fact you are not wearing 1500 dollars worth of camo clothing the average guy cant afford with out going to the bank to take out a loan, sheesh, half the reason I want to make a bow, I think I can afford to do that. Keep up the great videos sir. Dale
Thank you Clay - another great video. Fantastic production values and a real insight of traditional hunting in a wild and beautiful environment. Entertaining and enjoyable, thank you for this post and your great channel.
18:48 i literally yell a very bad word at the screen. Thanks for taking me on your hunt Clay. You'll get it done on a trophy one day soon, in the most valuable way possible to our kind.
Great video! This is my 3rd deer season hunting traditional. I still haven't killed anything. I also missed the turkey I was after this spring twice! I appreciate that y’all hunt in plaid. Nothing wrong with full Kuiu of FirstLite, but I think videos often make it seem like those are the key to success and that anything short will result in failure.
Excellent footage, awesome stalk . Glad to see you remembered your knife this time😉. There is so much to learn from your films, I am a compound bow shooter but I study recurve hunting every chance I get. If I can get recurve close, I can have my best chance of a clean kill.
You will be happy to know, that while I was out hunting this weekend, I ran across two Boldark trees that I believe will make me a fine bow, I will wait until bow season is over and harvest one of them. I seen them both, and looked them up and down, roughly 14" diameter and straight, I know right, pretty straight, only one or two limbs at the 7-8' high mark. I think it would make me a good one. That is another one of my goals, make my own bow to hunt elk with in 2021. :) Have a blessed week sir. Keep up the fun videos. dale
