Written by Walter Vinson and Lonnie Chatmon of the Mississippi Sheiks, and performed in the style of Doc Watson. We were both lucky enough to get to see Doc play a few times before he passed, and as folk musicians with ties to North Carolina, his shadow has always loomed large.
    Equipment/Techniques:
Guitar is a 1961 Harmony H -162 rebuilt by Morris Rowell.
Mics are a Vanguard V13 and an sE Voodoo VR2 in mid-side.
Preamps are an ART Pro MPA II.
Recorded live to 1/4" Tape at 7.5 IPS on a Teac A-3300SX recorder refurbished by Andrew Funk.
Interface is a Zoom UAC-8, EQ and Compression added in Pro Tools
Filmed on a Canon EOS R with an RF 35.

I've discovered a method to learn how to do stuff like this. You first off get away from all critics including the one in your head. It's nice to have a soundproof room, or some other place. Then, record yourself, just go ahead and sing like people do in the shower. Usually your internal critic will let you do that much. Then listen to the recording. Take note of the stuff that sounds good and what doesn't. Repeat, leaning into the stuff that sounds good. Thing is, you have ears, so you can tell what that is. Gradually you build up a repetoir of tricks that work.

    • @gatoryak7332
      @gatoryak7332 3 роки тому +19

@@pappyfiddle Almost everybody can sing at least OK if they turn off their internal critic and loosen up. However, few people can sing well in all keys. It is important to find the right key for your voice. That's why it helps to play an instrument like a guitar or piano and understand how to transpose keys. BTW, the right key for your voice will be different for different songs. The determining factor is the range of the melody (lowest tone to highest tone) and the range of your voice. Find the key that fits both. Some songs have ranges that are to wide for some voices.

I love how these guys play so many different artists and classic songs from the past. I'm only 16 but I'm an old soul, drawn to this music. Billy Joel, Elton John, Billy Preston, The Eagles, Simon and Garfunkel and so many more. They have inspired me to start my own UA-cam channel and share my musical talents and to introduce these great artists to my generation.

My Gosh. The guitar work was clean and crisp. The vocals were dead on. Gentlemen, it's just a pleasure listening to your music.

    Hey Josh,
So I watch an interview about how you read your comments, so I wanted to comment. I saw this video back in February, and it blew my mind. I’ve only hear the Cream version before this, and I was mind blown when I saw your take.
I loved it so much I decided to learn how to fingerpick so I could play it myself. 7 years playing guitar and I’ve never bothered to try. During this time, I was having a lot of heart problems, which made me very on edge because I am only 19. Everyday I would drive into work, the last song I would put on before I went in was this song, and I would sing along. It always made me so happy and relaxed.
Now it’s May and I can actually play the whole song, and I’m currently teaching my dad the vocal part so we can play and record it together.
    Thanks,
    Emma

Josh was always great, but Carson has improved so much vocally and in sheer self-confidence he's the ideal soul-mate to Josh's unassuming virtuosity.

Tuned in because I was a think'n to my soul this must be the Cream version of "Sitting on Top of the World," from 67 or 8. I "play" the guitar. So, I know the guitar player in these videos is VERY talented. Just enough to make me a little green around the gills. You dig?

I love the moment when Carson gets super impressed by Josh's guitar licks at 1:26, with the little raise of the eyebrows .... don't worry Carson, Josh is pretty good !!!
But that moment 1:57 when you start singing together is amazing.

In anything like normal times you would be filling venues. Thank you for sharing. When this country finally gets it's COVID-19 act together we will see you in person. We live in the right technology time such that artists can connect directly with an audience and you can bypass the old arbiters of what should be presented to us. Hang in there everyone and support performers online and in person however you can.

It's a 1961 Harmoney H-162 that was rebuilt by a guy named Morris Rowell. He changed the bracing on the top to an "X" pattern.
