  • Two Ethiopian brothers may never be adopted.
THE OTHER SIDE is used with permission from Josh Leong. Learn more at theothersidesh....
Like many kids in Ethiopia, Abel and his younger brother have spent many years growing up together in an orphanage in Ethiopia. But on the cusp of adulthood, Abel is soon to "graduate" from the institution, leaving Kiya behind, as well as his warmhearted mentor Mihret. Abel will also face life on the streets, where he will likely lean on crime to make a living and face everyday threats of violence and uncertainty.
Feeling bitter and rebellious, Abel struggles with the reality of never having been adopted -- a fate that many Ethiopian orphans face, in a country where five percent of its total population are orphaned and official policies closed off international adoptions in 2018. He will also face discrimination because orphans are regarded with suspicion and shame.
Kiya is still hopeful that he will find a family, but Abel still tries to prepare his brother for a more realistic future. When a prospective adoptive couple threatens to break the brothers apart, their future as a family hangs in the balance.
Writer-director Josh Leong's compelling social drama is at heart a story about the bonds of family, deftly weaving a sensitive, resonant story about the love and loyalty between brothers while shedding light on a difficult social reality that far too many children face in a far-off corner of the globe.
Many social dramas can veer into the didactic, where characters become puppets that espouse ideas and symbolize positions instead of feeling, thinking and acting like real human beings. But the excellent writing and directing avoid that trap, delineating with great care the emotional journey of two young men facing a precipice in their life -- one that they're often helpless to change, but must adapt to, with little resources to draw upon.
The filmmaking, too, has an immediacy and liveliness, from the handheld camera to editing that juxtaposes scenes of Abel's life for maximum surprise and energy. The narrative momentum, though, is character-driven, with Abel making choices that speak true to his fear and desperation. Though the format is short, Abel has a multifaceted complexity here, clearly loving towards his brother yet pragmatic of what he needs to do to prepare himself for his future transition.
He's brought to life by an excellent performance by actor Ethan Herisse, who was last seen in Ava DuVernay's award-winning limited series When They See Us and who powerfully evokes the struggle of dealing with his inner bitterness and anger while confronting his brother's innocence and hopes. His love for his brother and his choices on the street are at odds -- and put him in confrontation not just with himself, but with the person he loves the most.
What makes THE OTHER SIDE particularly potent as a piece of storytelling is not just its powerful portrayal of a difficult reality for many children in Ethiopia, but also how it becomes a heartrending portrait of hope: how hope is lost, but also how it is held onto, even with the most fragile and tenuous of realities that are beyond these children's control.
The ending of THE OTHER SIDE honors this tension by not tidying up its narrative questions with neat, simple answers. A question mark hangs over Abel's ultimate fate, but that's also true for too many children in Ethiopia, who exist in an overburdened system serving far too many orphans. The only hope that remains is love, but the question is whether it is enough to surmount what will likely be considerable obstacles.

Heartbreaking. In the 1960's, there were so many orphaned children in the US that they were advertised on TV. Before that, trains filled with children would travel the country and they were given away to anyone who would take them. How could they not feel unwanted?

The US has the same percentage of children who are orphaned as Ethiopia in 2020. They are often in group care homes or foster care but the same will happen to them when they turn 18. My daughter's friend was just put out with a little money and a counselor she saw for about a year. She had no job or friends outside the group home where she lived. She had a very, very hard time of it for a few years. Some kids are in good foster homes where they have direction and guardians who help them get in to college or job training but often they're just turned out because the state money ends on their birthday.

This film reminds me of a philosophy of "choice", a choice wich involves ascribing qualities such as right or wrong, good or bad, better or worse to alternatives. just Like what the brothers did, the old brother has a choice to either to steel or not to and he choses to steel which leads him to get beaten and missed an opportunity of getting adopted with his brother, and the other brother also had a choice to either talk the the couple or not, but he also chooses to don't talk to the couple because he was waiting for his brother which leds the couple to adopt some other kids and it was his aprotuniy to get adopted. If the older brother dicided not to steel they both would be adopted, and if the other brother dicided to talk to the couple without his older brother he would be adopted. A choice is a choice and An ethical choice But idk it's just my thought on this short film.

Five million orphans on their own at 18, wow.
I wish we lived in a borderless world where all kids can find homes anywhere in the world, can you imagine what kind of world that would be?
    Deafeningly sad international adoptions stopped.
I hope since the stoppage orphanages teach how to live in the outside world.
Such movies expand my horizon and gets me out of the little corner of the world I live in to give thought to issues far greater than the petty daily grind squabbles where you find yourself waking up to being 40 years old asking where has the time flown and what did I accomplish being/living in a mental rut of pettiness.

To all the good, prudish conscious and Eurocentric people out there: no need to go to Africa to look for sad and tragic stories such as this one. Human cruelty against your fellow man reigns supreme everywhere. Especially in rich societies where cats & dogs are better fed and housed than children.
In France, 18-year olds are kicked out of orphanages just the same on the VERY DAY they turn 18 (as a birthday present from the State) whether they have gained a qualification or not.
Hypocrits. You think Europe is perfect and you spend all this money on a film which does not change anything, just so a few couch potatoes have something to watch!

They should consider themselves lucky. Sad what happened. But families are overrated. I joined the army to get away from an abusive and manipulative family 20 years ago. For the past 15 or so years, I sacrificed my personal life to help my brother take care of his kids. So his marriage could succeed , and my niece and nephew could have a stable home life. I did not want past mistakes to repeat with the next generation. Well, it was all for nothing. The marriage just failed in a messy way after 15 years of everyone being miserable and suffering constantly. Feel like I failed in some way, but it was out of my hands. My niece and nephew would have been better off with just their uncle...My point is: FAMILY IS OVERRATED. The happiest time of my life was in the army, with no family! Strength and happiness comes from with in. Heaven is what you make it, hell is what you go through!
