Crazy looking game, hurts my eyes 😂. Some interesting mechanisms. The main thing I learned from this is that you are a gifted teacher and you really think about presentation, logical order, etc. Very appreciated. Keep it up, great quality. 👍
Thank you very much. Most people don’t really watch my channel to hear what I have to say about complex games. I’m known for the family games and shorts, but I enjoy the challenge of teaching complex games and I also like the games and want to share them. I’m glad there are more than a few people who can appreciate this content.
Interested in more of your personal thoughts about luck vs. skill in games in general. I recently listened to an episode of Board Game Design Lab with Richard Garfield sharing his thoughts about luck vs. skill. Have you listened to/watched that episode? Highly recommended even if you disagree with where Garfield takes things. Definitely stretched my thinking.
Finally got around to listening to it. (Which I thoroughly enjoyed and identified with Garfield's view.) With respect to Arborea, I would say that I would identify the card refresh mechanic as being something where the luck is not common enough to even out. You might take this action between 0 and 8 times in a single game. Each time you take the action, you may have been waiting 1-4 rounds for the track to advance. You don't want to put in that much effort and then make a decision that depends on luck. An equivalent "toy game" is playing chess, but every time you capture an opponent's bishop or knight, you draw a random letter/number pair and put you queen on that space.
