As a seller you have to also beware of eBay because a friend of mine sold a real Gucci bag that I bought with her 2 years ago at Gucci on rodeo drive. The person who received it claimed it was fake and eBay made my friend refund the buyer her money. So my friend lost her bag and 900 dollars

Great tips Sophie. I'm in the US and I just recently bought a Celine bag from Fashionphie. It was listed as new without tags and it was around $800 less than buying one from the Celine store. I am extremely pleased with that site. I also sell my own items on eBay and have had a lot of success. If I am going to be selling an expensive item, I will film the packing of the item. There are also a lot of buyers who are scammers. They will claim they didn't receive the item that was actually listed. By filming the packing and the address label it provides some evidence of what I am selling.

Hi Sophie. Sorry to hear you had a problem with your eBay purchase. I feel that eBay have come someway to becoming quite good at being on the buyers side. I purchased a mulberry bag about 10 month ago off ebay and the seller had good feedback etc etc and it cost me about £250 and even though I felt it was real and had seen enough of them to not doubt it's authenticity, just for my own peace of mind, I contacted one of these companies who authenticate things for you for a small fee and it turned out to be fake, so I contacted the seller who didn't bother to reply; I did this twice and in the end I contacted eBay and they were really good and i got my money back really quickly (I didn't even have to prove anything; is was very straight forward) and that person also was closed down. I ended up buying one from a local lady, which was beautifully kept with receipt and dustbag xx

I really struggle with the idea of buying anything designer on eBay now. Years ago I paid $3000 for a Gris Mahina XL - it was authentic and I was certain as I had the same in black, but it stank with this unimaginable stench that filled my room, it was a mildew odour. PayPal decided that odour was subjective and I was stuck with that bag, after months of enclosing it with a product called nilodour, I faded off the smell and had to resell with the truth and lost $1500. That was the last time i bought on eBay. I find a lot of vintage bags also have odour but I hadn't expected it on a newer style like the Mahina XL was at the time.

I agree! And even as a seller they are horrible... For example, a buyer can leave a seller negative feedback, but not the other way around. I've had so many buyers not pay for things, and there's nothing I can say or do! Argh! 😡 I need to get back into Amazon for sure. Thanks for watching! Xx 😘✌🏽️

I sold my Victoria Beckham glasses, brand new and boxed etc, and the girl even asked for a discount and I just wanted to sell quickly cause I was moving to London. So a week later she said that it is fake without any explanation and she got a refund and I never received glasses back! Ebay is the worst. Also, I am not even counting a number of times they would block some item I am selling and find me saying it is fake even though I would have lots of pics and it would be real and not even something you can find fake , plus boxed etc. Then when you contact them they cannot explain anything so you've wasted 1 hour and nerves. Hate them seriously. Unprofessional AF

I hate being scammed! I shop online so often that it's almost impossible to completely avoid scammers. Now I have a handful of fake stuff, some were gifted to me and some were from scammers... how embarrassing. I can't do anything with them. It's embarrassing to wear them, and it's unethical to sell them...

I never thought that I would subscribe to a channel like this that talks about luxury products (especially things like bags which I never cared for) but I'm in love!! The bags are stunning and everything you say is articulated so well and you're so entertaining, Sophie. I just purchased my first sort of upscale bag thanks to your inspiration, a dome satchel bag from Guess, it's nothing crazy but I definitely appreciate handbags & luxury a lot more now.

Vestaire has crazy fees when you're selling so that's why some people price their stuff a bit high sometimes. However, they verify each item before you list it, so if you list it in 'good condition' and set the price too high in relation to other similar items in the same condition, they won't let you list it. And you can't lie about the condition because if someone buys it and it doesn't match what you described, it'll get returned to you. That's all great from the buyer's point of view. Also I like that you can negotiate the offer and sometimes you get lucky and find your dream item at a low price. The only thing is that once you buy something, you can't return it; you can only relist it but there's a fee for that.

The cheap fake leather is polyurethane and often smells sort of fishy and gross I know exactly what you mean when it smelled like cheap pu faux leather! Ebay did used to require written appraisals in cases where the authenticity is disputed but thankfully no longer require that and will just ask you to return for a refund. Often you cant take them to the store to have them authenticated because the company may want to sieze it as illegal.

Best advice is to make sure your listings end at a decent time. I always ensure my eBay listing finish around 8-9pm on a Sunday or Monday evening, when people are likely to be sat at home on their iPads/laptops - I see so many listings finishing between 8am & 6pm - when most people are in work and do not have internet access to bid..

  • @tlk5807

Good advice Sophie! I had the same exact experience with buying a fake YSL bag. Smelled bad, not the same as the picture and didn’t have the same dust bag as pictured or the serial number that YSL bags have inside the inner pocket. I knew something was wrong when after I bought it I tried to ask when they were going to ship because four days had passed and it wasn’t shipped. They never answered two of my messages. Then the following week it finally got shipped but from some place in the Middle East not the location that their site said which was Californina USA. So I figured out they probably had the fake shipped to them from China then another person sends it from another location. Another thing I learned is beware of a seller with (0) sales or approval rating when shopping for luxury items. When I opened my claim with EBay and talked to them on the phone. Explained everything and thankfully they took over trying to contact the seller. This just happened a month ago so Ebay I think handles these issues better now. Finally, they gave me a full refund but could not get the seller to respond. Btw, when I wrote the seller initially about the fake they sold me they claimed it was authentic but then apologized. First tried to talk me into keeping it and they would give me an undisclosed partial refund. Then said if I did want to send back I had to send to some place in Liberia but I wasn’t able to print out a legitimate shipping label. It was a huge lesson learned. Looking back the price was way under what most of the authentics were going for so be careful there too. Love your channel!

    Hi Sophie, love your videos!!
Some other viewers have already mentioned this, but don't trust too much on the "authentication process" done by the seller or any buying format of used bags. Fashionphile, yoogiscloset, vestiaire, even Poshmark, they've all been called out upon, in purse forums in the past, for carrying a fake, and when told upon by the vets about a fake, the good shops will take down the item immediately, but you have to remember, the authentication process is done by a human just like us, and while there are vets, there are also amateurs or newbies. The risk gets higher when it's a vintage. Most 3rd party authenticators that charge you a fee for their authentication skills very often come up with letters saying "inconclusive", for many of the vintage items as it gets extremely hard to authenticate a vintage item.
When online shops confidently states that they can authenticate any item, including a vintage, you shouldn't blindly believe them, and you should always also look out for yourself!!

I HATE e-bay! I never buy there (unless iphone screen protectors), I only sell there unwanted stuff. I agree that sellers will have authentic pictures there but send buyer a FAKE! its ridicoulous we got to prove that item is fake. We should be able to send fake item to e-bay and let e-bay go to LV to prove its fake! What I HATE the most on E-BAY: when buyer DOESN'T pay we open a case, get final sellers fee back (like after 2 weeks) and THEN we want to leave a feedback-------> IT WILL BE A POSSITIVE FEEDBACK NOT A NEGATIVE- FOR NOT PAYING? How is that fair then? I dont agree giving them 3 times chance is good enough before they shut down their account! That feebback drives me nuts! I always write them in capital letters hoping somebody will notice before bidding-I would check all feedbacks even if 100% if buying something expensive. Love u Sophie x I also live near London x

Thank you for this video! Omg I can't believe eBay want written evidence that it's fake I always assumed that they'd just refund you that's ridiculous, It's funny because I was looking at a ysl clutch on eBay and the seller couldn't show me a receipt and they didn't have much feedback and I was debating what to do because I loved it so much, I think I'll leave it lol

+Yaasmeen96 They no longer do that as MANY sellers are getting scammed that way. Person buys item, receives it, contacts eBay saying it's fake or damaged, buyer takes pictures of a fake or broken item they already had, returns the fake to seller, get their money back AND keeps the real item from the seller.

I ended up with a fake Trevi pm once on eBay which the seller claimed it was 100% authentic. The seller took my return because they couldn't prove to me it was authentic. It's the seller's job to prove it's authentic , not yours especially if they claimed it's authentic.

If you want to know whether your LV bag is genuine, you can take it to an LV store and ask for cleaning/repairing. If they refuse to clean/repair it for you, then it is fake. They wont directly tell.

Thats not true about eBay. I filed a case against a seller selling fake Chanel sunglasses. The pictures they had were completely different then what I got and I opened a case and showed pictures and they gave me my money back. All you have to do is open a case as item as not described and they review it. I enjoy shopping on eBay because I find the most amazing vintage and new item pieces for almost nothing compared to retail. I'm also a seller, so you should give eBay a chance again

Yeah i get what you meant the fake goods always have that cheap plastic smell cause when im out shopping and all the helpers or a.k.a maids have LV bag or slg straight away i can tell by the smell the print's that if it is real or fake and the leather tag as well .

Omg Sophie I could totally relate..Had the same story but with LV shawl last year. Went through a battle with EBay ended up with nothing. They didn't refund me any money n I couldn't stand a fake in my house so I donated to charity with other things I wanted to sell on eBay but got totally put away by their service. Now if you use VC, I can recommend Rebeel which is German version of VC. They saved me a lot of money when I bought Chanel bag there. They checked it and contacted me saying that it has a very strong smell so I have cancelled the transaction and two days later got my money back 👌👌Best regards x

I use to shop on eBay like an addict! But i never bought designer items back then. However i did have some bad experiences. It seems that if you pay by a credit card linked to paypal...if you ever dispute you will almost always win. Because if your credit card company pulls the money back from paypal and paypal has given the money to the seller...it's paypal who is out and they can only keep chasing you for payment but no guarantee they will ever get it. I sell on eBay now and it's always worrying for scammer buyers to buy something and then try dispute it for a refund and keep the item. I find the best way is to be super honest in listings and list good photos, i also provide tracking and promptness with communication. I've been eyeing some designer goods but i always have that fear it will be fake or the seller used fake photos. Even designer on eBay will cost you quite a bit that it hurts to lose.

The RN number is not the style number thats the registration number for manufacture. The topshop style number is a mix of numbers and letters on the internal label (probably at the bottom of this top) and will usually end in the colour code (ie PNK for pink, or LBLU for light blue).

I knew when I bought it that I might eventually want to sell it so I saved pictures of it when I bought it and there were plenty of images online and in press at that time. They tend to disappear. Also might be an idea to just take pictures as you buy things and save them on a folder or hard drive for that purpose? Hope you find that useful... Lots of love, Ebru XxX

Make your photoshoots more fun by making them into actual blog posts on your website and as Instagram shots - also get a tripod and a remote, and a selfie stick... ten times faster. Film video "Lookbooks" with each item from the photoshoot. You can actually just pull the stills out of your video in your editing software and not have to take photos at all. The challenge of maximizing efficiency and time is the only way I can get through the repetitive and boring stuff sometimes. :)

Stuff on Vestiaire Collective is so expensive because the site puts a 33% (or one-third of the whole) selling fee on everything. So if someone offers a pair of shoes for 300€ and a person buys them, the seller will only receive 200€ while the site keeps 100€.
I'm looking for Chanel espadrilles on there and I have been looking for a couple of weeks now, and while sometimes there are used ones on there for a reasonable price, lots of people are putting them up for sale for 800€ or 900€, when new in the Chanel store they only cost 550€. It's that 33% markup because the sellers don't want to lose money, but it's still crazy.

If you want to know whether the item is real or fake on eBay, go to PurseBlog and on the forum page there is a list of pages for different items such as Chanel. Once you find the page you need, make a proper post (it tells you want they want) and then lovely people authenticate the item for you. Very helpful. You might need to contact the seller for more images if some are missing and if they aren't giving them to you then it is definitely fake.

Ebay sucks at protecting their buyers, i once faced a situation where the seller had never sent an item and basically ebay told me that i was on my own.
Paypal on the other hand helped me throughout the whole process, and i would not hesitate to use paypal again next time.

Everyone should read: Deluxe, How Luxury Lost Its Luster by Dana Thomas. I love luxury goods as much as anyone, but I can’t stress enough how important this book is!

Thanks for the video! Always nice to get pro-tips 😉 I am struggling though with the fact that I'm a new seller... Have also a pile waiting to be sold and for some luxury items I don't have any receipts and I just know that everyone's scared to get scammed and therefore I postpone selling cause I'm afraid people will want me to drop the price since I don't have any track record. How did your first sale go? I know I must get rid of some of my bags to welcome new beauties 😊 xx

I buy on ebay too. Ebay will refund money if you describe your reasons and send pictures of the item when you can't be sure it's authentic. I have returned 2 items(in fact they wanted me to destroy the fake but I was anxious that the seller had my name and address so opted to return the item at their expense)

I bought a Speedy 35 about a month ago from EBay. Should it have a little label on the bottom that says "China?"

    • @lila1471

I have the speedy 35 and no it shouldn't inside it should have either Made in France though some of them say made in Italy, Germany, Spain or USA because they have factories there too.

I sell on Vestiairecollective, even though I feel their commission is on the steep side it’s hassle free and super easy due to the preprinted shipping label and a simple phone call to have the item picked up.

From my knowledge, you're not walking into a LV store and asking them to authenticate an item. They aren't allowed to do that (at least in the U.S.). If you have a personal relationship with a sales associate, then maybe. What you can do is ask to have it reconditioned or maybe something fixed (if it's used there might be a scuff or some minor blemish). They'll only fix authentic items, this is how you get your item verified. There are also third-party companies that only clean and repair luxury brands, but only if authentic (they have it verified). eBay might accept their verification also. Essentially, you don't need to pay to have it authenticated.
I used to sell on eBay for a living years ago. A quick and easy tip. Do a search for the item you want to sell, but reduce it to show only completed listings. This will give you valuable information about buying patterns, what works and doesn't work, language to use for titles, etc. When creating your description, use bullet points instead of paragraphs. It's quicker to read at a glance. Keep your personal back stories to a minimum. No one cares that you're a stay-at-home mom, married for 25 years and this was an anniversary gift from your husband.
Last tips are for buyers. A seller's positive feedback is nice, but pay special attention to their negative feedback but especially the neutral feedback. A lot of valuable information is often in the neutral feedback as these buyers often did returns or had other minor issues that could be VERY important to you. Take the time to read what was written, some feedback doesn't make sense i.e., buyer leaves negative feedback yet writes "love the item, it's perfect!!!".
For luxury and expensive items I encourage you to contact the seller even if it's to ask a simple question. This will give you information on how quickly they reply, their "customer service" and how they make you feel. I often ask a stupid question that was answered in the description. If they're snotty or rude, I pass. Of course this isn't perfect and accurate, but it's that added bit of information.

Actually ebay is MUCH MUCH better now! I have saved thousands buying high end brand handbags on ebay. I make sure the seller provides me with many photos including the serial number, and then I have the bag authenticated online. Ebay acknowledges these professional authentication services. There are many legitimate companies that to do this at a reasonable cost online...and you don't have to ship your bag to them. Years ago this did not exist. The bait and switch is very hard to do nowadays. If you are buying a used bag there will be flaws. It would be very hard to replicate flaws from use and the have the same serial numbers on another bag in a very short amount of time. The listings to avoid are those with no pictures, very little photos, claims of having a "new authentic" bag, stock photos. and sellers with little or poor feedback.

Hi Sophie, I hope you didn't pay to much for the fake LV bag off ebay 😔 that's awful! I did stupidly buy some Mac make up from eBay, thinking it was the real deal but sadly it wasn't & it was horrid, I never used it and think I ended up throwing it all in the bin. Just so frustrating xx

I dont buy from ebay because of the risks of getting scammed, and for me it wouldnt be worth all the hassle with trying to get money back etc . I do buy from Vestiaire Collective and all tho some items can bee abit expensive, you can find good deals, and i think its worth abit extra money considering you will get the item checked. And there is soo much on there so you can always find something amazing! Something that keeps me off ebay is that everytime you find something that you like, most of the times..the person doesnt have receipt, even tho the item might be just a few months old. And i find that really shady..because with all my luxury items i save all the boxes and receipts incase i want to sell it or return it to the store (if there is something wrong) But yes, i recommend Vestiaire Collective! Last item i bought from there was a few weeks ago, it was a prada wallet listed in excellent condition, got it with box/cards etc. bought it for like 130 euros and it looks like its never been used:) Anyway! Love your videos! Keep it up!!

"I was embarrassed to even have it in my house" lol. I've got my money back for a fake before. I had like two weeks to track down an "expert" and have them write a letter with official letterhead to send to eBay. It's difficult but it did work. After I got my refund from PayPal, eBay told me to destroy the item.

That is why I do not buy from eBay because they don't back up the consumer and people like us get ripped off. They did that to my son. I won't sell with them and I will not buy through them.
