*In the street, the kickboxer would win, because all he needs is one punch with the opening given by the rugby guy who didn't cover himself properly and it would either knock him to the floor or stun him which would give the kickboxer room for another 1-2 attacks to finish the job. The professional almost always wins in a street fight if not sucker punched.*
I had a lot of rugby players at my fight gym. You can laugh at their mistakes in sparring, but you definitely don't want to mess with these guys. Even when their striking tech is sloppy, you'll get in trouble trying to punish them. The best strategy is to keep light and technical, conserve energy till they gas. Avoid blocking because you still feel it. Let them hit air. You can tell this guy has more fighting experience than the typical rugby player. For instance, he doesn't push his punches or expose his ribs often. They have really good lateral movement and explosive charges, but he doesn't use it to avoid gassing except when sandwiching someone to the wall. He's worked out strategy to make his limited skills work.
Until you come up against a guy like Paul Gallen, who doesn’t gas out… Many other rugby players, specifically rugby league players, have elite cardio. Particularly for their size. A guy like Payne Haas is massive and would put most heavyweights to shame with his cardio abilities.
@@izzy031096 Rugby players generally have excellent cardio, but it's no universal metric. When boxing, you are using your body very differently, and inefficient technique burns you out fast. Then there is the simple difference of how much weight you are carrying, 85 vs 110 kilos. Every time there's a little bounce back and forth, that's an extra 25 kilos they're accelerating then decelerating. It's just more work, and it adds up.
I believe a good way to non verbally deescalate from a too hard punch is to respond with a hard punch and then going lighter right after, most of the time ppl understand
Idk why but while watching this I kept thinking about Genki Sudo vs Butterbean (much larger opponent) and how Genki played it smart by evading close quarters striking until he was able to get a heel hook on Butterbean

Second Sparr. My favorite sparring rounds have always started light/flow, and started ramping up when we both felt more confident and honed in. I think it helps you stay calm while you start adding more speed.
I suspect that switching to smaller gloves benefits the smaller fighter. Since his strikes aren't as powerful, any extra ability to cause damage is more proportionally helpful. Does that make any sense? Anyone know the facts on this?
Rukiya did quite exceptionally all things considered, good job to him! I’d love to see Terada take on a “no weight class limit” style like Ssireum, Sumo, or Bokh, could be interesting to see a clash of the titans!
It'd be amazing if they could get Shinya Aoki to sign up for this. He's just a bit on the shorter side at 5'11 and 170ish pounds (good for these David/Goliath matchups) but he's so brutally effective with his jiujitsu, plus he's extremely good at judo and wrestling. My only concern is that he's notoriously aggressive, so I'm hoping he wouldn't dial it up to ONE FC levels. Anyway, it'd be great to see if Shinya were more or less neutralized; if he can't pull off jiujitsu against this guy we're all in trouble. Reminds me of Nogueira vs. Sapp back in the day, or Sauer vs. Mr. Utah.
It's almost revenge of karate here. Lots of good karate on display in addition to the top notch kickboxing and some nice Muay Thai to round it out. Really, really sharp fighter (I guess that's why he's a pro).

Usually if you're a big strong guy, you'd still gas and you're not used to taking one to the chin plus you don't know how to defend yourself from a trained fighter, but a pro rugby player would not only have strength and speed but also cardio stamina and durability from constantly tumbling and eating impact everywhere in their training and matches, so even though they can't fight properly they are properly built to fight
Smaller gloves bring bigger awareness…both on the damage they can give and the damage you will take…they showed respect for their opponent because of this.
People need to now that size isn’t everything that matter the rugby player could only grab and do a inefficient throw where as the kickboxer was landing all the shots about 95% size doesn’t matter when you vs someone who knows martial arts and fighting more than you
In the second clip the rugly player is not using his size and power (he is sparring and not fighting). So of course he will lose to a more skilled opponent. But in the first clip it actually shows better what happens with size and weight differential in a proper fight.
Rugby league players are better suited imo. They train the wrestle tactics far more as the aim is to pin the player with the ball and slow the play down so that your defence can reset. Also a lot more one on one contacts from further distances. League players also typically have better cardio
Imo light sparring is very disadvantageous to bigger fighters, who tend to be more powerful but much slower. So in the sense it totally robs them of their advantages while zoning in on their weaknesses.
The thing is, if this was a real fight, a couple of those punches would have destroyed this rugby player. If you've ever been punched bare-knuckle, you know how much it hurts, even if it was from a smaller guy.
