Watch the whole film, it starts out with just David Byrne, then one by one band members enter along with their instruments and stage setup. It's just a phenomenal stage design.
Yup totally agree, it would be great to start from the beginning of 'Stop making sense' and take it a song at a time in order. It starts as a totally empty stage, you can see the back of it, and with the lights full up. David meanders on with a ghetto blaster, with the beats on cassette, just him on an acoustic guitar. With each subsequent number the stage is build up bit by bit, risers wheeled on in front of your eyes with an extra band member added each time, until you have the full band. The energy level is there throughout the concert, and how he doesn't even seem slightly effected by all the dancing is astounding. If you think this dancing was fun, wait till you see his big white suit!
If you liked this video, you’ll definitely enjoy the rest of the movie - very visual and lotsa fun! Another fun, visual concert movie is Secret World Live from Peter Gabriel.
One of the greatest concert films ever made. Period. I had already been a pretty big fan of the band before this came out, but this film made me fall in love with them. They literally build the stage while adding musicians as the show goes on. The energy, the musicianship, the creativity, the pure theater of it - it's all unique. Gotta watch the whole thing to get the full experience though!
I saw them in Berkeley outdoors on this tour... the joy they exuded captured everyone in the audience and EVERYONE was on their feet the whole time. I hadn’t a clue previously just how fun the concert would be. The little 2 year old daughter of one of the background singer’s came out for the encore dancing onstage with everyone. Adorable!
This album tour was the one and only time I saw the Talking Heads live and it was really great it was such a high-energy show everybody left with smiles on their face it was just amazing great time
The next one to do from stop making sense: -Girlfriend Is Better But really, you should watch the WHOLE CONCERT from start to finish. Best concert film of all time. (also, shout out to Bernie Worrel from Parliament Funkadelic on keys!)
This is my favorite video from the Talking Heads. Their stamina is phenomenal. The song is great as well. But the "Stop Making Sense" movie was absolutely amazing.
Stop Making Sense is one of the greatest concert movies ever made, period. BTW, Justin, if you hadn't noticed legendary keyboardplayer Bernie Worrell in the corner, Parliament-Funkadelic is a whole new rabbit hole for you to dive into.
Just when you stopped the video, David Byrne steps to mic and asks...anybody have any questions? The entire film, directed by Oscar winner Jonathan Demme, is fantastic. Must see.
This film was directed by Jonathan Demme close to the time he was directing Something Wild, great movie. (Ray Leota's coming out film.) The whole thing is well worth a watching, particularly "Slippery People", "Once in a Lifetime", "Swamp", "Making Flippy Floppy" and "Crosseyed and Painless". If you want to see their best in my opinion, l suggest "Born Under Punches" in Rome 1980. Adrian Belew at his weirdest and a background vocalist, Dolette McDonald who'll just floor you.
"I don't know WHAT I look like!!" That's my favourite "crazy Byrne" moment. Nobody does hilarious frustration better than Dave. 😂 Oh, and check out the performance of "Burning Down the House" from this film. It blows the studio version out of this galaxy.
If you do the whole concert, it is IMPERATIVE that it be experienced start to finish in the proper chronological order. The staging from the beginning is brilliant, as instruments are added with each passing track. Starts off with just Byrne with an acoustic guitar and a boom box providing the beat. Musicians and instruments incrementally maneuverd in one song at a time. Roadies roll in the drum kit during a song. Amazing Staging that will surely impress you, your friends, family and random passerbys alike! So wake the neighbours and phone the kids, it's time to STOP MAKING SENSE!
Now you did it JP....stop making sense is the best concert video of all time. What you saw here was just the tip of the masterpiece of theatrics that went into this show. Do yourself a favor and watch it all.
This is actually three nights of concerts. In order to fully capture the concert, while avoiding the cameras themselves, they filmed from one side of the stage one night then from the other side and finally center. Before some of the songs start you can see Chris hold a small speaker to his ear. He is getting the beat so all shows match.
Interesting, the video's in reverse image. Great reaction again! You're covering all of the important artists. BTW, one of the keyboardists is Bennie Worrell, founding member of Parliament-Funkadelic. This ain't no foolin' around. There are some great studio recordings to cover by Talking Heads. Drugs and Animals are two that are often overlooked, but genius.
Some people mentioned that the late, great Jonathan Demme (who also directed The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia) is behind this incredible concert film. I was fortunate to have dinner with him and some friends in Quebec City in 2010 and he was an absolute gentleman. Some context: Jonathan was a great friend of Haiti and he sat on the board of governors of a foundation I helped launch shortly after the 2010 earthquake. One of the instigators of this foundation is Régine Chassagne, from Arcade Fire, who are, in my opinion, Talking Heads’ direct descendents! (This is particularly apparent in their live shows, which have the same frantic energy - and well-populated stage - we see in Stop Making Sense!) Speaking of David Byrne, his book “How Music Works” is a must-read for all music fans... When he launched it in 2012, he came to Montreal and he talked onstage, in a small auditorium, about his book for over 90 minutes with... Arcade Fire’s Win Butler! A fascinating conversation between two of the most thoughtful musicians I know...
You're on a roll, Justin. On Stop Making Sense, Crosseyed And Painless is da bomb for me - deceptively starting as lounge soul, then erupting into the most urgent funk available to humans.
This was before my time, but my gf and I went to a local theater where this was being played. The crowd was going nuts, everyone up and dancing, cheering between songs, it was a live show energy at a theater, my gf and I were so blown away by what an experience it was. Bottom line, if you find a theater playing this, go.
I saw this tour at the Greek Theater in Berkeley Ca. It was impossible to be still. Even the security was bouncing up and down. The most fun you can have at a concert.
I was fortunate enough to see the Talking Heads a couple of times as a teen. It amazed me how much David Byrne can run, jump and wiggle while still sing without being winded. This was a concert film directed by the late-great Hollywood director Jonathan Demme. The film has many iconic moments; Psycho Killer and Girlfriend Is Better when Byrne wears his ridiculously large business suit are couple to mention.
David Byrne has a Broadway show called American Utopia which has taken this show and made it more mobile!!! Everybody plays, sings and dances including the drummers and keyboardists. No members of the Talking Heads other then David Byrne are in the show however! Going to see it in September, can’t wait!!!
The 60s and (early-mid) 70s were my 'formative years' musically. I stopped following trends when disco music made the scene in the late 70s, sticking with the groups and people that I came to know and love earlier who were still around in one form or another. I heard the big hit, Burning Down The House, because it was on the radio a lot in that late 70-early 80 period. But I knew nothing else about Talking Heads. Then a younger friend of mine said, let's go see Stop Making Sense, the regular midnight movie where I lived. This was 1985 or 86. My jaw dropped.....I became an instant fan by watching the movie. This may have been before DVDs. In any event, I didn't have a DVD player. So I went back to watch Stop Making Sense multiple times at the midnight movie, dragging any friend along who would go and sometimes going by myself. I have the Stop Making Sense DVD now :)
Went to see them in the seventies in Central Park. Someone I went with knew somebody working at the concert. Well we didn't stop walking till we ended up standing in front of the stage . As an added bonus some girl groped me on my way to the stage.
I was fortunate enough to see Byrne in concert about 10 years ago in Gateshead. The show just exuded fun, joy and vitality. You could feel the collective ecstasy of the crowd the whole way through. I’ve never felt anything like it. Thank you Mr Byrne!
I remember going to see this film in the theatre in Oakland CA when it was released. Half the audience was up on their feet dancing in the aisles - for this movie! And I recall talking with a buddy who saw this tour in Phoenix AZ in the summertime - when it was 100+ degrees. And the band was doing ALL these crazy moves.
There's 1 video I recommend above all others, 'A Quick One (While He's Away)' by The Who from the Rolling Stones' "Rock and Roll Circus" in 1968. Their performance was so good they put the Stones to shame and they shelved the project for 28 years. The Who were fresh off of a tour so they were in top form. This was their mini-opera before making "Tommy".
Being in this band was a cardio workout!! Love it! David Byrne is a genius. Tina & Chris and the rest - brilliant! (Check out their side project, “Tom Tom Club.”) Bernie Worrell (keyboards) was a founding member of Parliament & Funkadelic. Plus, Byrne’s image was nerdy cool guy. Like you’d expect a pen-pocket-protector. His moves are intentionally awkward. He’s also come out to say he’s got Asperger’s. He’s anxious one-on-one, but luckily (for us) enjoys performing to crowds. Thanks 🤪
You should watch the whole movie, It starts with just David singing on his own to a backing tape with no audience or band and each track adds more band members then winds down again to just him, It's the most awesome music movie ever :)
The concert footage was filmed over a few different shows, you can tell because Tina's bass changes from orange to blue and back again a few times during the course.
It’s not counterintuitive if you speak Irish/Gaeilge. If you speak English, you’re not gonna get it. The Irish language has no K in their alphabet so all Cs are pronounce K. Unless it’s an Anglicized version of it.
One summer at my first little rent house, this movie was absolutely the only thing in rotation on my TV at all times I wasn't listening to some on the stereo. Top 5 film of all time, needless to say.
Tina Weymouth is amazing. Her bass lines are always soo good. No to mention, playing bass while jogging in place. That Hoffner 500 is light as basses go, but still, damn.
Great reaction! I feel you man. I had so many shows lined up in 2020. A lot of refunds. As for this, I got to see this tour at Forest Hills, amazing! Even though the Talking Heads are no more, look for David Byrnes "American Utopia", it's the closest you can get to see something which resembles this tour.I think it starts up again in the Fall. You can see it on Amazon as well!
Their tour previous to this one had mostly the same line up but also included Adran Belew on guitar. He performed with them after leaving Frank Zappa's band, and before joining King Crimson. Stop Making Sense is better known to a larger audience because of being a spectacular concert film, but their previous tour was even better. There are many videos from 1980 and 1981 that can be found on youtube. And half of the double album The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads is from that tour. It is their best album.
Treat yourself to the rest of the movie - one of the best concert movies ever. (I second the motion: Secret World Live - Peter Gabriel, and also Jeff Buckley Live in Chicago, and Joni's Shadows and Light, with Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker...)
Very cool that you're branching out to live material and videos. This may be my favorite concert film/music video (next to The Kids Are Alright). I love the way they keep adding musicians as the show progresses. How fun would it be to be in that BAND! Notice that Chris Franz never used a ride cymbal in Talking Heads. PS. You may want to turn your mic down a bit in relation to the audio.
Great song choice, I like the addition of the video thing, do lots more of them, and, whatever else you do, Stop Making Sense, dammit! *grin* Yah, do the rest of the songs from the SMS Tour video. I guaran-damn-tee I'll watch 'em all.
I had the privilege of seeing this is a theater when it was released. Great movie hope you find the time to watch the rest. I also hope you find the time to watch Todd Rundgren perform "Sweet" Live From Daryl's House. It's such a fantastically soulful live performance! Life affirming.
That game is called get dizzy and fall down from my memory... Great having the videos and a great one to do early on... now about the rest of the concert video? Its as great and fun as this one.
Saw this during its theater run - then was pissed I didn't see them live lol If I had seen them it might have been a show in this film because I lived in the LA area.
This is actually a great format to watch Patrick Watson. There is a live version of Lighthouse under Domino Recording Co. which afaik is his yt channel. It is recorded on a rooftop in London. It is ethereal and laid back. p.s. if you ever decide to watch a live version of American Woman by the Guess Who, you need the one recorded in 2000 in Winnipeg. It is over 14 minutes long. Bachman managed to play half his solo with a broken string.
Absolutely fantastic Justin! you started a new era in your channel with two items at the same time, reaction with video and live music 👏 🙌. "Seconds Out", "Yessongs", "The Songs reminds the Same" and many others are waiting for you!
you really should watch genesis live. I suggest Supper's ready. Or watcher of the skies, The knife with Hacket and collins. Also The musical box is amazing live. Ive seen a Montreal band named Musical box who recreate the original Genesis shows. Ive seen them alot in the 90's. You dont know Genesis until you see them live. Supper's Ready live is the greatest experience i had in all the shows ive seen. So powerful.
The image is reversed for some reason. Jerry Harrison on the keyboard solo. A member of the group. He also plays guitar. Bernie Worrell is the other guy on keyboards. He played with Parliment/Funkadelic. I saw this tour in Costa Mesa, CA. a few months before this was filmed. Great show. Ranks among my favorites. So glad it was released as a film so people could enjoy it decades later. I think you took the song too seriously just listening to it. Now you can see it's a fun song. And you missed what he says to the crowd at the end. 'Anybody have any questions?' Then walks off.
Hope it now makes more sense, even though it was back to front. Think that’s a small recording issue but no sweat it’s a great performance and great to get your reaction to the REAL talking heads, the best dance band ever.
I saw this tour on a friday night and Asia the next night when I was in High School. Sometime watch the whole show. The staging was amazing starts with just David and a boombox and members are added as the show progresses. NIN did an homage on their last big tour. Lastly Live shows. I believe You are in Fla. Dead and Co On sale Wed.5-19!!! Tampa for You WPB for Me. Good luck.
If you're going to do more live concert videos, you'll like Phil Collins doing his tambourine solo during I Know What I Like (In My Wardrobe). Then, of course, there's the legendary Neil Peart drum solo.
Love your reaction ♥️ ❤️ and glad to know you are a fan of live, local musicians! BTW, I would love to see you do a review of band of gypsies any song you choose 😊
When I was a high school senior, in 1987, I painted my locker door as the cover of the Stop Making Sense album.
Watch the whole film, it starts out with just David Byrne, then one by one band members enter along with their instruments and stage setup. It's just a phenomenal stage design.

David starts with Psychokiller on acoustic with a ghettoblaster doesnt he ? And then the big suit later on 😂😂
@@MrDiddyDee Not just the dancing but the fact that they’re building the stage around him. :)
Such a simple and brilliant concept.
@@antitheist2000 A ghetto blaster that does nothing because it's really a drum machine.
The Talking Heads are super worthy of a significant dive!
Stop Making Sense - the only aerobic workout that you need.
If you liked this video, you’ll definitely enjoy the rest of the movie - very visual and lotsa fun! Another fun, visual concert movie is Secret World Live from Peter Gabriel.
Yes, those are two of my all time favourite live shows. Add Pink Floyd's The Wall in Berlin and there's a trifecta delecta.
@@Vince-lq3ve I’ll have to check that out - I love the Floyd!
@@Vince-lq3ve I did the Trifecta. TH at the Greek in Berkeley. PG at the Oakland Alameda Arena and PF opening night at the LA Sports Arena.
@@bradhernandez5823 Nicely done!! I did the oneefta: Pink Floyd Winnipeg Stadium....awesome sound, missed Waters though.
Both hands in the air for Secret World Live. One of the greatest live performances ever staged.
Probably one of the best live concerts ever recorded! You must watch the entire concert video to appreciate this performance! Brilliant!!
One of the greatest concert films ever made. Period. I had already been a pretty big fan of the band before this came out, but this film made me fall in love with them. We wouldn't steer you wrong, Justin. We've been around, we've seen some stuff. Glad you enjoyed this, Byrne is quite the performer.
You're very right :D

Great having the videos and a great one to do early on... now about the rest of the concert video? Its as great and fun as this one.
Saw this during its theater run - then was pissed I didn't see them live lol If I had seen them it might have been a show in this film because I lived in the LA area.
Digging the goatee! And the MOVES 😅 I think Cillian is pronounced with a hard C. You would love this whole film. Highly recommend 👍
I keep on forgetting that😅 ty Sarah!
Dude... love how much you appreciate the Talking Heads. I think I'd have to do 6 months of cardio training to be part of that tour
I never noticed TinaW is left handed!!!!!!
The whole band for that matter. : )
I noticed that too, and whenever I'm on Zoom, I'm left-handed!
Love, love Bernie Worrell.
Fantastic that you are doing videos.....wait until you see David Byrnes Big Suit! 😊 Stop Making Sense DVD may be the best concert video out there.
This is a great live version
I will repeat everyone and recommend the whole movie whole heartedly.
Re Watch ONCE IN A LIFETIME with the Video Version Which Is Amazing And creative.
all of the Talking Heads are part of the band on stage ..... plus extras
Absolutely fantastic Justin! you started a new era in your channel with two items at the same time, reaction with video and live music 👏 🙌. "Seconds Out", "Yessongs", "The Songs reminds the Same" and many others are waiting for you!
Christgau described it as "the finest concert film"[16] while Pauline Kael of The New Yorker described it as "close to perfection".[5]
you really should watch genesis live.
I saw this tour
Live performance of Slippery people is worth a listen also.
Heeeeeeere we gooooo!!
FFS view the whole Stop Making Sense concert film. It is GOAT.
Good luck.
Thats awesome Ed!
If you're going to do more live concert videos, you'll like Phil Collins doing his tambourine solo during I Know What I Like (In My Wardrobe). Then, of course, there's the legendary Neil Peart drum solo.
The occasional video is just fine - there are many classic performances that blow away the recorded versions.
This is the best concert film of all time. That energy you love so much? Fueled by quite a lot of cocaine intake.
You absolutely need to see the whole film.
For a band whose videos must be seen, dive into OK GO.
Love your reaction ♥️ ❤️ and glad to know you are a fan of live, local musicians! BTW, I would love to see you do a review of band of gypsies any song you choose 😊
