@@StezStixFix "If in doubt - take more screws out!" - Now put that on a T-Shirt. Greetings from Spain. I found your channel a couple of weeks ago and am now watching from "old to new". Keep up what you are doing!
Good perseverance, I think the reason the iris system malfunctioned in the first place, was that liquid that was on the box too, got into the camera and after it dried around the iris the residue makde it stuck, could have been some sticky liquid. When it worked the first time then stopped working you also could have set to the Av mode ( manual aperture ) which would kick in that motor to move
My "Luck" with owning Canon gear was pitifully bad. I don't trust Canon anymore. I love fixing things, but my Canon stuff always broke in a bizarre, intermittent fashion when it was most inconvenient. There have been recalls, class action lawsuits and I just cant get that trust back into them.I love watching you work on things. It is amazing how this particular repair gets my juices boiling over. !! Canon !! :-)
Hello, Steve, If you are not sure if the aperture unit is working or not, then disconnect its ribbon cable and use your bench power supply to give it about 1.5 volts then see if it opens or not.
Yeah, thats the annoying thing. I really wanted to pinpoint the fault, but it was just so perfect inside there and nothing looked out of place at all. But, happy result in the end, and I've learnt lots along the way. Thanks again for your help! 🙂
The reason it started working is because you loosened it up by cleaning it with alcohol. It stopped working because you used the dirty brush that you use for cleaning up flux from pcb's. Once the alcohol evaporizes, there is only sticky residue left, locking up the mechanism again. Always use clean tools when working on these delicate mechanisms and camera's in particular. I'm sure you caught some dust on the inner lenses too ; )
Nice to see the inside of a camcorder Steve. Strange how the iris got stuck. Been into photography for years and never seen anything like this. I'd be interested to know if it's still working now?
Thanks Jon! I think it is still working, I use it as my backup camera for filming, although I haven't used it for a while. It was certainly a strange fault, but I guess just by opening it up, it freed whichever part got stuck! 👍
wow, I can't believe i am watching my action unfold in front of me, after watching your previous video on this camera, (I didn't realize you had a second video). My actions and results have been identical to yours, I had my camera sitting here for months just convinced it's broken, and just recently I turned it on to actually charge a battery for a different camera (similar model) and i noticed the camera turned on! I turned it off and just like your's it didn't work!! I turned it back off, turned it on, and played with the zoom as I saw you did, and suddenly it came to life again, but since again the aperture isn't opening. Just like you, I'm not content with such an undependable camera. Should I do as you did, break the camera completely down and do a major cleaning or should i try and get a can of dry compressed air and break it down just a little and see if i can, "free something up" as you say?
😁 I guess it's quite a common problem! I would probably give the can of air a go, and see if you can dislodge or free up something. If that fails, then I guess you'll need to go a little deeper! 👍
You're welcome. I too came from Vince. As for your camera, the larger the aperture, the shallower the depth of field. Here's a good explanation: www.studiobinder.com/blog/what-is-depth-of-field-definition/
Yeah, and thats all I need it for really, so I'm happy with it. Hopefully it'll keep on working and not seize up again! And I've learnt a lot about cameras along the way, so it was definitely worthwhile!
Please help me! I have a Canon Vixia HF700 camera. And it's not showing the information on the screen, making it impossible to control the features. But she is recording. Could you please help me. I tried to help in specialized stores to fix. but I could not. thanks in advance for your time. Jorge Douglas / Rio de Janeiro / Brazil
Cheers Steve. Nice one :-) Good ole tinkering brought the camera back to life again. Well done :-)
Thanks Vince. If in doubt - take more screws out! It definitely worked on this one! 👍

It is obvious why it finally worked... I had my fingers and toes crossed as instructed!! LOL! Nice work Steve, I can't take all the credit!

Yay! Good work...even if no one might ever know what the original fault was. 😁
Glad I could inspire you to make a revisit tho!

technically speaking, that shutter thing is the iris, which sets the aperture 🙂
Keep it up buddy
Cheers Coder!
