Thanks for the reaction. I have the same bittersweet feelings every time I see a performance from this wonderful concert, especially this song where the band's faces are projected in the background. I'm thinking, poor Tarja has no idea what pain she's about to face. Then I look at any live show from her solo career and I see how happy she is there and I'm glad for that. But that sadness is still there in her eyes when someone asks her about Nightwish. She said in an interview a few years ago that getting fired from NW was the second worst thing that happened to her, after her mother's death. That she couldn't even speak for a week. She wanted her own solo career, but the guys pushed her before she could jump, and the way they did it could have destroyed her.
They were basically still children when they founded Nightwish, Tarja was nineteen, so she spent her entire adult life with the band. Today, when they are older, they would definitely handle the breakup in a more mature way and Tarja and Tuomas could remain friends.
When you do the last song of the concert Wish I had an Ange, there are two versions of this recording on the Internet. One on the official Nighwish site, and the other on the TarjaTurunenHD fan site. The second one is three minutes longer and contains the very end of the concert, which is very moving. Please do this one, it takes over seven minutes. The recording of the song from the NW site does not include this part. ua-cam.com/video/Xp7Bc00NTNg/v-deo.html

Hi Pete! Whole show is as tragic as it is magnificent. Generally both Nightwish live DVDs with Tarja are my favorite. There have been many live performances with all three vocalists, various festivals, but it's these two DVDs that have most perfect, perfectly mixed sound. Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan is one of most melancholy compositions band has ever created, it sounds almost like their own funeral chime on this show. Sense of finality is heightened by sight of empty stage before next song begins. You could feel that sense of inevitability perfectly. Tarja's lyrical, dramatic soprano makes ballads sound very poignant and emotional.
"Kuolema tekee taiteilijan is kind of a little interlude," smiles Tuomas. "Actually, I've been systematically - maybe even too systematically - trying to come up with something new. It became almost an obsession, it seemed to me that with my band I should try everything imaginable. Eventually I decided to write a song in Finnish. Well, on first album we had "Lappi", but I don't know if it could be called a serious song. It was clear to me from very beginning that "Kuolema tekee taiteilijan" would not be a traditional Nightwish track - a blast of powerful heavy metal sound - because then it would sound totally ridiculous. I decided it would be a ballad, with an orchestra, but without drums and guitars. I had my doubts until very end, and just in case, I wrote lyrics in English as well. But it added a certain exoticism to album and was a kind of tribute to our Finnish fans who had been with us from very beginning. Among other things, it's a beautiful song with a cello solo that I think lit up whole album. You can almost feel heaviness of centuries gone by. Solo was played on a Stradivarius cello, and from what I hear, that instrument is valued at least two million pounds!"
Tarja later revealed that song had special meaning for her. "It was incredible to watch people hushed up to hear song and raise their burning lighters up. And even though there wasn't much going on stage - I was just singing alone - the song always managed to create an incredibly beautiful atmosphere. I sing in Finnish, and since we're sort of musical ambassadors from Finland, I think this song is extremely important. So it's very important to me, and I think it's good to constantly remember where we came from."
I don't know any band other than Nightwish where firing lead singer would be like hardest divorce of a married couple. In first era Tarja was a muse for Tuomas, in an open letter he wrote that he could no longer write songs for her. Almost entire next Dark Passion Play album, anyway, is just overflowing with energy, emotions and feelings associated with Tarja. At that time Tarja had already been fired and album was recorded with Anette's vocals. Nevertheless, for DPP album, Tarja unwittingly became a muse this time as well. Nightwish has been my favorite band since the late 90's and I'm more than sure that Tarja was more than just a singer for Tuomas. Ghost Love Score.

yes i know what you mean .. there's a few moments that hit different knowing what was to come at the end of the concert, but this song specifically with the pictures in the background has this farewell feeling to it. thank you so much for your reactions 🌻 i genuinely always enjoy them a lot!
i hope that maybe after this concert is done at some point you'll do the From Wishes to Eternity DVD. not immediately of course, but eventually would be so nice!! It's not bitter-sweet like this one -- just sweet. Everyone looks really happy there. And there's probably a few songs you haven't heard yet on it because it's from year 2000. Anyway, thank you again! 😊

It absolutely is heart wrenching, and like you I can't ever watch anything from this concert without the thought coming to mind. It's a bit like a time slip, and you know what's coming and she doesn't - and it hurts, in that weird way. Then the press conference, and the tears that came with that.
On the other hand it's also really nice to be nearly 20 years on and know how successful she's been on her own, seeing her smiling and laughing so much - enjoying everything she's earned. But even so, despite all that, its still heart wrenching to watch or listen to this concert - particularly the end, after 'Wish I had an Angel'. You see them depart, after the bow, and Tuomas' and Marko's body language as they leave doesn't look like they just played the concert of their life so far (at that point).
It is what it is, everything worked out for all in the end, but it's brutal every time. BUT really grateful to you for reacting to it because you understand.

This is such a beautiful song with deep meaning. It was played at my aunts funerals.
You should hear her own composition Oasis, both the album version and the Argentina performance from 2013 where she is alone on the stage, playing piano. Those lyrics start with Finnish and then continue in English. Absolutely gorgeous.
    Lyrics to this song:
    Kerran vain haaveeni nähdä sain,
Only once did I see my daydream,
    En pienuutta alla tähtien tuntenut.
I didn't feel (myself) small under the stars.
    Kerran sain kehtooni kalterit,
    Once my cradle got bars,
    vankina sieltä kirjettä kirjoitan.
as a prisoner I am writing a letter from there.
Luojani, luoksesi, anna minun tulla siksi, miksi lapseni minua luulee.
My Creator, to you, let me come, for what my child thinks I am.
(Or: My Creator, to you, let me become, what my child thinks I am. - both translations are accurate.)
    Sinussa maailman kauneus,
In you the beauty of the world,
    josta kuolema teki minusta taiteilijan.
death from which made me an artist.
Luojani, luoksesi anna minun tulla siksi miksi lapseni minua luulee.
My Creator, to you, let me come, for what my child thinks I am.
(Or: My Creator, to you, let me become, what my child thinks I am.)
    Oman taivaan tänne loin,
My own heaven I created here,
    anna minun päästä pois.
    let me get away.

I absolutely agree, the music playing after the song is powerful and hits every time. I'd like to add here for our friend Mr Pete (when you get to it) - the video containing both the song and the full ending to the concert is 7:43 long, as opposed to the version on the official NW channel which is only 4:33 long.

I loved your reaction ❤ This is a bit of a heartbreaking concert to watch, a good one though
The end part always gets me, the lyrics too: "Oman taivaan tänne loin, anna minun päästä pois" witch translates to "I created my own heaven here, let me get away".

I can only speculate. A recurring theme in Tuomas’ music is the loss of innocence. Here are the lyrics
Only once I could see my dream
Didn't feel the smallness under the stars
Once I got bars in my cradle
As a prisoner I write a letter from there
My Lord, to you, let me become what my child thinks I am
In you is the beauty of the world, of which death made me an artist
My Lord, to you, let me become what my child thinks I am
My own heaven I created here
    Let me get away
My own heaven I created here
    Let me get away
When he mentions the child, I think he is referring to himself. So as that innocence dies, the pain helps him compose and why he composes.
But this is one of those songs that conjure up different things for different people. Tuomas is brilliant that way. His ballads are just gorgeous, every single one

Check the lyrics ... there is English translation somewhere....it is so deep that also navy seals do tear too (not just the girls on the first row). I know that the word "Kerran" means Once, a word which is in every song of the Once album. Check also the Lowlands live version of this....also awesome.

I aways listen the Taubertal concert remastered version of this song. From Metallwish channel of course. For one, the remastered ones have better quality.

How to pronounce Tuomas in Finnish. Put that in your fav browser. Of course, it is always hard to trying mimicing foreign pronounciation, ear just fixes words to sound familiar, and that's why adult foreign speakers have accent.
