    I hope the humid heat and termites scare more people from moving here. When it takes 40-50 minutes to drive 9 miles to work, the population is to great for the area.

    As a native, because im used to the pollen, heat and bugs... What I'm not used to is the traffic. Ive been to major cities that developed their infrastructure to handle the amount of people/ tourists. Thats basically impossible here so if you dont work from home, i wouldn't dare live in Summerville/ Goose Creek and work mt pleasant/ west ashley. Used to take 25 min, now over an hour +. Live next to where you work which could be very expensive. If you're a bartender, server... good luck. You won't be able to afford where you make "decent money" so you'll essentially be sitting in a ton of traffic. Really that goes for anyone.

    • @LifeinCharlestonSouthCarolina
      @LifeinCharlestonSouthCarolina  8 місяців тому +3

      Yep, I have to say that I agree with you. Though, I do know some high-end restaurant servers who make a good living and only live maybe 15-20 mins from work (for example work downtown and live on James Island, or live and work in Mt Pleasant). It just really depends on your living situation, like if you're single and want to live alone vs. a dual-income household or roommates or living with family. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your local perspective!

    I have been here 10 years. I wish my husband woukd have told me about the traffic. I have never lived in a city of this size and population that only has ONE HIGHWAY! I understand one of the reasons is because it's on a peninsula. And for Charleston to be such a huge tourist destination, shopping and entertainment sucks here. No real mall. No zoo, waterpark, or amusement park. Music artist don't come here for concerts. And when they do, it's a week night. Parking downtown and at the beaches is the worst. But being just a few hours from ATL, Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham, Jacksonville, Orlando and Savannah means that zoos, shopping, concerts, and such are not too far away.

    • @LifeinCharlestonSouthCarolina
      @LifeinCharlestonSouthCarolina  2 місяці тому +2

      Well, technically we have 3 "highways" - 26, 526, and 17. But yes, they all get busy! The Mt Pleasant Town Centre and the Tanger Outlets in North Charleston are the best outdoor malls. The indoor malls are half empty given the decline of in-person retail shopping vs. online. There are some small county waterparks for the kids and Magnolia Gardens has a petting zoo. I think we get a lot of great concerts here personally with some big names! I've never had a problem parking downtown in the garages. I agree that beach parking can be bad at high times. Thanks for watching!

      Try LA for a few years and then you'll feel like you're living in the country here. Traffic is mild compared and the downtown here is an actual walkable Europeanish downtown... meaning it's a real downtown like towns all over were before the1970's, until Walmart decimated them in most places. One of the few great downtowns in America... that's why it's always rated top place to visit. Take that away and there is still a beach. Take that away and there's still no blizzards. Regarding traffic again... I routinely drive 50-100 miles a day in zero traffic. Just don't go from the inner part to the outer parts like Summerville at 4:30pm. If you are going from the outer parts like Summerville to the inner parts including Mt Pleasant/West Ashley at that time there is really no traffic to speak of. I do it pretty much every day. Anyone crying traffic has to be from the sticks. They've definitely never lived where there is MAJOR traffic. They also must be getting on the exact wrong road at the exact wrong time. I can drive from Mt Pleasant to downtown and back multiple times a day with zero traffic basically ever.

    The "CHARM" quotient has all but totally DISAPPEARED here. It's more like a hustling and bustling perpetual city wide construction project which also encompasses all surrounding areas. Can you say the word TRAFFIC??????? There are no "good times" to leave your house to avoid it, so don't get any ideas in your head along those lines either. P.S. The ocean temperature in the summer here maintains a steady 85 degrees or more.

    My son was stationed in Goose Creek. They had short, well-fed alligators on grounds. Personnel had a tendency to feed them.
    Regarding humidity, he said he would get tired of working on his vehicle and having to stop to wring the sweat out of his shirt. It doesn't take long to get soaked in humidity, if you are active outside. He loved Charleston, particularly all the restaurants with great, local food, but he was more than ready to leave when it was time to go.

    It is nice for an October visit. Unbearably hot from May thru September. It's the buckle of the bible belt. Its STILL very very racist and there are pockets of KKK. Rent for a decent one bedroom apartment will be $1200. If you have to ask the cost of a home, you cant afford it. It's stuck in the past and far from progressive even though there's a massive influx of people moving here. Did i mention that it's unbearably hot and humid to the point that it's exhausting to breathe? The pockets of neighborhood walkability mentioned are absolutely overpriced? Again, you cant afford to live here. Mount Pleasant, where i used to live, is laughingly called Mount Plastic, unless you live there and need to shop at Trader Joe's and Whole Paycheck.
    I've made mistakes in life, as we all have. The biggest was moving here and thinking i would be embraced by the quaint Southern hospitality. You won't be. You're, unless you are 4th generation Charlestonian, going to be referred to as "from off," meaning you're an outsider and will never be a part of.
    Don't be fooled by the "Bless your heart." It's not a blessing. It's a snide snarky Southern insult.
