Circumcision is a big part of machismo culture in the Philippines. All boys need to undergo this procedure before entering puberty. However, hospitals are not accessible to majority of the families living in rural areas. The procedure is performed by a non-medical practitioner and there is no anesthetic med used. During the procedure, the guava (bayabas) leaves should be chewed to take the attention of the child away from the sharp knife. He then should spit the chewed guava leaves (they say it's anesthetic) onto the wound after the procedure is done. This tradition is still conducted as of today but is not recommended anymore because of high risk of contracting an infection. Hence, every summer, free circumcision missions are conducted across the country to avoid this practice.

In addition, I don't think they use a bolo. This is probably just to exaggerate. From what I hear, they use "labaha" /razor. Circumcision has health benefits, as seen from a medical POV (Mayo Clinic supports it). Meanwhile, this has biblical relevance and we are generally Christians, so you know. It's just most people don't know that anymore.

    • @edyumul

:) some use a bolo. I went through the procedure using a small jungle bolo. I was 10 years old and it was in summer during school break that I had to go through it because some of my friends in the same age had to go through it also. Else your friends will tease you, calling you "Supot" (uncircumcised). It was scary but at the same time fun because you're not the only one. Five of us lined up chewing guava leaves waiting for our turn. Hahahaha.

me also, my uncle use a bolo knife to circumcised me before I was too afraid because I thought it's gonna be hurt but when I close my eyes in a minute while i'm chewing guava leaves and then I opened it's already finished.. and then my classmates stop bullying me because I already circumcised..

Because way way back kids in the provinces are born at home with herbal doctors and not in the hospital. Also it is some sort of gives bragging right for a kid and it is like some kind of a counterpart to girl's menstruation. Somehow symbolizes their transition from being kids to puberty or manhood.

Me and my friends had the exact same experience on the summer before high school. Mikey's video is very accurate - the bolo, the wooden stick which served as "chopping board", the guava-leaves chewing, the wearing of skirt afterwards, et al.
Before the "procedure", the uncle (he's just some middle-aged guy in our village who knows how to do it, let's just call him uncle) asked us to chew the guava leaves. After it was done, he asked me to spit out the chewed leaves onto the fresh wound. I stared at him blank-faced... I unwittingly swallowed it! I remember the horrified look on the uncle's face. The uncle and all of my friends panicked. "Quickly, chew again!" And then my friends were scrambling to pick leaves from the guava tree. Two of my friends were holding my shoulders from both sides (for fear of me passing out), one was shoving guava leaf in my mouth, the uncle was shouting "chew!", "this time don't swallow!" and "spit out!" in rapid succession. It was hilarious! It was scary, but at the same time it was fun. I wouldn't trade it for any doctor procedure.

i was circumcised when i was in grade 3 or there after the school year together with a group of kids also in my age then but there was one boy at his 13th to 15th year old, most likely just what mikey bustos has shown. this is a very true story especially in the rural areas, no kids has been circumcised during after d the days of their birth. circumcision in the phils is a big thing, there's always is an impression that without being circumcised, girls will be turn-off and a belief that wives will turn away.

I remember circumsizing my cousin some years back through a proper medical procedure (with anesthesia, sterile instruments, gauze, and everything....plus a lovely nurse too). After the very successful procedure (of which i was medically trained)....my cousin asked me "kuya, did you experience any circumsicion complications with your patients before?"......i quickly answered...."NEVER". Because you are my first patient. Hahaha.
His face turned red....so i said i was only kidding.
Later on that same day....i saw him riding his bmx bicycle. 😉

In Philippines circumcision usually done during 7 to 8 years old when boys are old enough to take care of his woulds.. In modern time it is now likely done in hospitals. But in provinces children still cut this things through a big bolo and w/o medicine only using leaves of guava for the woulds. Yes it is a tradition that every summer children are line up for circumcision usually near the river as you saw in the video.

Circumcision in the Philippines is done to boys ages of 9-13. It actually depends on the foreskin appearance I think, I haven't observed any since I'm a woman. But I got nephews and we have a family doctor so he decides when will be the right time to do it. This has become part of the tradition though I'm not sure if it existed even before the Spaniards came. And that process Mikey showed was the traditional, I mean the ancient way of doing it. But now, it is mostly done in a medical facility.
It was usually done during summer, when there's no class and wearing skirt is true or Big shorts to prevent the fabric from touching the wound. After few days when the wound is a bit dry, some boys would swim in the beach since salt water helps clean and heal the wound faster.

They don't use that type of 'knife', more on the one they use for 'shaving' in old movies (it's lantseta or lancheta) just to 'skin' the little guy. In western culture (I heard) they had the baby boy circumcised after birth, though some private hospitals are doing it nowadays. Filipino men aren't tall (mostly) that's why some have to wait for 3rd grade, but it still depend on what the nurse or doctor will say. And that old practice is still popular in provinces where hospitals and public health centers are barely reachable by foot, so they go to an expert and be doe with it.

Don’t know if you already got answer for your question, but circumcision is done that late in the Phils due to the same reason other cultures has different ways of becoming a man. If it’s the walkabout in Australian abbo culture, or bar mitzvah for Jewish, it’s circumcision in the Phils. I’m sure that you already got the answer that the vid is still exercised in the provinces or for folks who can’t afford a doctor, but yes many also go to the doctor.

Many filipinos are still doing the traditional way of circumcision for reason there are still communities which don't have access to hospitals. Filipinos are always conscious of having a clean body and we believe circumcision is a way to a hygienic and sanitary way of living. Its usually done during before puberty period because it is common belief not to have babies undergo it because of the risk that the organ can go back to its original state as the baby boy grows to puberty.

In the Philippines, circumcision is like a cultural rite of passage from boyhood into manhood. And a man who is not circumcised is laughed at by anybody who finds out, even his girlfriend, fiancé, or wife. It's like he had avoided a test of courage. A circumcised man is "normal" to Filipinos, even though it might have been done while he was a baby, but the cultural pressure is not as strong nowadays. In previous decades and centuries, a man who was uncircumcised was considered as a pagan or foreigner (not a baptized Catholic), a coward, a gay/homosexual, a weakling, or "all of the above." The pressure to conform in Filipino society is immense even now so even the Muslims and the Chinese adopted the practice rather than have their sons bullied and taunted by his peers and elders throughout their teen years as "supôt" (uncircumcised). Actually, it's one more trait common to Jews/Israelis and Filipinos (there a few others).

Circumcision in the Philippines became a culture of who's man enough and who are coward, unmanly, or sometimes connecting it to being gay. But some circumcised guys change their minds and personalities and ended up being gay, bisexuals, or transgenders making the connection between circumcision and being a true straight guy or real man (in context of Philippine culture) blurry. So some people connect manhood or being real man with psychological, social, and moral or gender preferences than physical standards like gender roles, endurance, bravery, being gentleman, and being responsible to family or towards their girlfriends, fiances, or wives, than of being just circumcised. Being a real man is a gender idea that is still debatable for some to put standards. In case of the Philippines, circumcision became a physical standard of being a real man. Like who can really tell who is a real man? one who is circumcised? one who respects women? one who is gentleman? one who is brave and courageous? one who likes women? one who is stick to one? one who is playboy? one who only had one girlfriend and who also became his wife? one who had a lot of girlfriends? one who have many girlfriends at the same time? one who is not virgin already before marriage? one who is responsible as a boyfriend or husband? one who drinks beer or smokes cigar? one who is brave enough to be a soldier or police? one who does carpentry than cooking? one who does "man" jobs or "manly" things?
Who is a real man anyway?
hehe. I am circumcised but I am just questioning this social stigma placed upon young boys telling that a real man is circumcised or should undergo circumcision, and for me there is more to being a real man than just being circumcised or enduring pain in circumcision. Kids should be told also how to be responsible guys especially to the women, be a good man for girls, be loyal, be someone who girls can get courage and lean to, be a responsible father in the future, protect and respect rights of women and other genders, and other social culture we have as Filipinos and not just get circumcised and you can exercise already your manhood without being responsible. Yet we cant put standards or criteria on who is more man than other in a world where gender fluidity and gender equality is existing where guys choose to be cooks or designers than traditional carpenters and engineers, where guys choose to work in a traditional women's job than in a traditional men's job, where some guys are becoming "house husbands" and are the one's raising children and do chores at home, where guys also show their emotional side than the traditional culture of men being emotionless especially in public, where guys don't learn to fight back unlike traditional where guys are the one's most getting in troubles and fights, and where guys come in all shapes and sizes with different personalities and preferences or with different fluidity in gender or sexual orientation. We are not sure now who's really a real man and who's not. We can't put standards, divisions, categories, criteria, or call names as if the distinction of being real man and real woman is getting blurry or gradually is disappearing in our collective world culture. It's up to the person if he identifies himself as a man, for we can't judge right away these present times for sometimes who we think as real man is not a man for other's eyes and preference and who we think is unmanly is more manly for others.

the right time to be circumcise is from the age 8-12 y/o..it is because the kid undergoing circumcision must have fully expose glans (head of penis) and foreskin is completely detached to the glans, a good requirement to have a clean and very good looking cut. and also at this age's we are mentally and emotionally prepared a bit.

This tradition is still happening in some rural areas, but is not practiced anymore in most urban areas like cities and the National Capital Region. The Department of Health is respecting the tradition but is advising to stop this practice and see those medical practitioners with much knowledge and experience or even those non-medical practitioners but are licensed by the health department to practice free medical or clinical circumcision in medical missions conducted by the national or local government units. It is rare in the Philippines to circumcise a young boy when he was still newborn or a young baby like what is practiced in some Western countries. Circumcision in the Philippines happens every dry season or summer/long summer vacation (commonly around March to May) for every young boys ages 8 and above. One important thing is to make sure that the male genitals' glans can be seen when the foreskin is pulled towards the body to make the glans visible, or else the young boy would wait next year until his body is ready for circumcision. Aside from physical readiness, emotional and psychological readiness are also required. True that it had been a culture of machismo in the country that real man should undergo it before or during early puberty, and men who don't undergo this are placed under social pressure, embarrassment, and even bullying at some point because they are seen as unclean and unmanly enough or sometimes connecting it with cowardice or being gay which is still quite unaccepted for most in the Philippines unlike in the west except for parents who are open to this gender or the western perspective of this gender. Yet some young guys or adult guys who underwent circumcision still change or can change their gender expression, gender identity, or sexual orientation and preferences in the future making this connection between being circumcised and gay unreasonable. Women are also used to have or prefer the most that their husbands or boyfriends are circumcised which indicates they are clean and real man, which in turn adds more to the social pressure to young boys that they should undergo this procedure in order for them to have girlfriends or raise a family in the future. It also became a sense of bravery, courage, and pride for kids to compare each other on who had circumcised first or between who are circumcised already and who still aren't around the puberty age. It's a part of culture, a part of stigma, a part of social pressure, a part of Philippine manhood, and a part of women's preference with their boys (kids, boyfriends or husbands). Some Filipinos are gradually embracing the Western culture of circumcising the newborn or young baby boy, some are also gradually embracing to still prefer guys who aren't circumcised, but most still prefer the tradition. That's why young boys are trained by older brothers, elderly people, older male cousins, uncles, or their dads to be brave, hide emotions, endure pain and wounds, and do male gender roles at an early age to prepare their kids for this tradition and for manhood.

Because if your not circumcize you are ashame kids will tease you that you are not circumcize and call you names..

Let the boy CHOOSE when he is 18 or legal age. Parents should NOT make a decision that will affect his entire sex life. Sexual pleasure is GREATLY reduced, and if someone wants to do that to themselves, that's their decision. TORTURING baby boy's needs to END!

Holy molly! I'd been circumcized when i was grade 4 (9 years old) we used to chew guava leaves when the procedure was going on and there's this old man will do the circumsision, and when he hammered the blade that was placed on my 'you know' i swallowed the guava leaves i was chewing, others are fainting in sudden shock of pain!

its just a tradition here. and the most of the boys are actually excited about this, its like a coming of age thing, being one step closer to be a man, and bragging rights.. etc. its like ear piercing for girls here.

Elementary days circumcision is more of a rite of passage for boys. I had mine in a hospital but my brother, who's only 3 years older than me, got his in the province where he had to chew guava and spit on his private after the foreskin was sliced. I used to tease him that his looked like a cauliflower lol

Circumcision of boys in the Philippines is engrained in the Filipino culture. It's not an option. It's a must do. Being uncircumcised male in the Philippines not a good thing. Your peer will look at you differently and probably disrespect you as a man. Above anything else, boys do it for religious reasons. Being a predominantly christian country, the bible encourages it. So Filipinos do it no matter what.

This is actually a leftover practice from pre-colonial Philippines. You see a majority of the islands that would become the modern-day Philippines were islamic polities hence the need for circumcision. Muslim tribes that still practice this call it pag-islam literally, "to induct someone to/enter Islam" since, in addition to being a boy's rite of passage, it's also a religious practice. Don't worry though since traditional circumcision has been largely replaced by modern circumcision so it's not as painful as before 😅.

I did it after 4th grade but in the hospital, but people still do it with the itak (short sword) even now. You chew the guava leaves then apply it to your thing to avoid infection. Crazy thing is, now that I think about your saliva has more bacteria that could cause infection

Reason it became a tradition because in the old days, most babies are born at home with a help of a midwife. This is also because of hospital are far from most towns and only few of em. It's a "manhood" thing because when you get to an age, you know what hurts and what's scary and kids being told their ___ is getting chopped off...you want to avoid going to the clinic as long as you can lol! The older you get and still uncircumcised, other kids starts to teased you. I had a neighbor who was running around the neighborhood crying because his parents told him he need to get his circumcision and they had to drag him all the way to the clinic lol! He came home a tougher man😂🤣
