    Replace cherry tomatoes with regular ones, asparagus with something cheap, whole wheat penne with a cheaper option, storebought dough with homemade one and this goes on. These are not budget friendly at all.

      redrapunzel wheat penne is only like a dollar a box from barilla. asparagus you can buy on sale for 88c a lb and freeze. Cherry tomatoes i agree that can be replaced

      redrapunzel so buy fruits/veg when they are on sale and in season at rock bottom prices. It can be done, even cheaper than shown here with a little know-how and planning. I made acorn squash for dinner last night (because it's in season here) at rock bottom prices. I rarely meal prep tho cause I'm lazy and don't like to eat the same things over and over. Your mileage may very

      In some countries finding asparagus is really hard. In my country not only it is very rare, but it costs around 8-9 in US dollars,just for a pack with 6-9 one of them in a pack.

      Dark Rays Of Sunshine love their videos but feel like almost $5 for a single meal is a lot, when your meal prepping too! Especially when you can get a 'meal deal' for £3 that includes a sandwich/salad/sushi, a snack and a drink. Obvs, quality isn't the best but these seem quite expensive overall... Feel like they need to shop around.

    • @mintinired
      @mintinired 7 років тому +179

      $5 a meal is $465 per month per person. That's too high for alot of people and its also unnecessary. There are plenty of ways to eat well in the $1-2 per person range. It just involves a bit more creativity with fewer ingredients.

      siennavine81 Is that supposed to be insulting to her? There are tons of meals you can make for under a dollar a meal, easy. Cabbage stirfry with pork and rice is a great meal for under a dollar each. Salmon cakes and quinoa salad, real Mac and cheese, chicken meat loaf with a seasonal root veggie mash, summer rolls with home made pork sausage and asian coleslaw, chilli and cornbread, chow mein... These are things I've made in the last 3 weeks that are under a dollar a meal. If you can't achieve that price point, you are limited by your imagination or can't be bothered to try.

      For me in the UK - the other day I made a big batch of pasta sauce (6 servings) to refrigerate and use over the next couple of weeks. A big bag of pasta is about 50p, tinned tomatoes are 30p, cheap cream cheese is 50p, garlic is 30p, onions are 15p. I made enough food for six days, plus garlic and pasta left over, for £1.75. 30p per meal. The most expensive thing is stocking up on dried herbs, but that's a one-time purchase. Student budgeting ftw.

      I thought it was to be cheap but if you are spending $5 a meal and $5 a smoothie you aren't eating for very cheap. That plus maybe one night out a week and you are at $500 a month per person.

    • @SpadesHeart
      @SpadesHeart 6 років тому +37

      For a lot of people, it's not what they're eating but how much. Meal prep is great for portion control. It's a really holistic approach to calorie counting honestly. Last time I lost a lot of weight, that's how I did it.
      On another note, regardless of restaurants being more expensive, these guys did not shop with budget in mind. These are not cheap meals, but really, very easily could be. For example, you can buy pre-frozen berries which would cut the cost of those smoothies by more than half. Get rid of the greek yogurt as well. Those breakfast sandwiches should also be much cheaper as ham, eggs and bread aren't all that expensive. The vegetables being used were not inexpensive; asparagus and cherry tomatoes aren't exactly budget options. The splurging on fresh herbs also kills your budget. I don't know how those pizza's were that expensive if they made their own dough, a jar of tomato sauce is like a dollar, a brick of cheese is like $4, really those should have been under a dollar each. Same with the pasta, pasta is cheap. I can understand meat being expensive but you can shop sales. Once your pantry is stocked with your grains and dough and spices, you can easily get by on $20 a week and eat well.

      Alex Westphal, I had a low cow. A heifer, actually. Her name was Bambi. Sweet thing. We went to pick up a couple of week old steers to raise for beef, and they gave her to us in the bargain.
      She was a runt, but she made a fine pet for a few years. She developed tumors along her neck, and we had to have her put down. At least we gave her a pleasant life while we could.

    Smoothie prep is overrated and kinda unnecessary. It's easier to wake up in the morning and roughly cut whatever fruit I want into the blender, it'll all get blended anyway. Cutting using a board, putting it into bags, freezing, etc is too much effort

    • @Michelle-pn9xt
      @Michelle-pn9xt 5 років тому +2

      If is in the bag already, you take it out of the bag, put it into the blender, and blend. If this is done ahead of time, it is quicker. Most people do not have time toi chop fruit before going to work, so some people do a weeks worth of smoothies ahead of time. much quicker when you are going to work or school in the morning.

    You guys, food in the US is so expensive. 😲It's easily 4x more than Germany for basics like flour, sugar, or vegetables. It seems like they actually want to discourage people from cooking at home.🤔 I was shocked at the prices when we went back to visit my family! For almost everyone, fast food and restaurants are cheaper than cooking, which is so unhealthy.

      But it also depends how you shop, and location. Say you were in Los Angelas, the food will more expensive then going to Ohio. The grocery stores put all the expensive stuff at eye level so thats the first thing you see. So look up or down if you want the cheaper things. Buy more off brand stuff too because they can be the same exacthing but for a cheaper price. And a plus, most grocery stores have all the things you need around aisles so if you avoid the aisles, then you will also save money 😊

    Here's an easy chili recipe that only costs me $6 to make (feeds 3).
    1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
    1 pound can of Kidney Beans
    2 cans of tomato sauce
    1 yellow onion
    1 green bell pepper
    1 head of garlic
    3 bay leaves
    Seasoning I use is Cayenne Pepper, black pepper, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, and a packet of sazon. I do it to taste. (If you're lazy or go too heavy handed, a taco seasoning pack would work fine...)
    Mince half the onion, bell pepper, and 3-4 cloves of garlic as finely as you can. In a pan on high heat, add oil. When the oil begins to smoke, add your onion and bell pepper. When soft, add your garlic. When the garlic becomes brown and soft, lower the heat and add your ground beef. (At this point, I season the meat VERY LIGHTLY. If you're using a taco season pack, just add about 1/4 of it).
    Combine your meat, vegetables, and spices and let the beef brown. While this happens, take a separate pot and prepare the beans. Strain all the slime from the can of beans thoroughly. You can use a colander to make it easier, but I do it from the pot by rinsing, shaking the beans with my hand, and draining the water until it stops foaming up. Cover the beans with water in the pot and place the pot on the stove. Add 1 clove of garlic (peeled) and only your pepper, a bit of sazon, and garlic powder. (DONT USE TACO SEASONING) and let the beans soften over low heat. You don't want to cook them completely yet.
    Once brown, In a slow cooker or large pot, add your meat. Pour all the beans in as well as 1/3 the bean water (keep the rest in case you overcook your chili and need to add water). Now, add your two cans of tomato sauce and your bay leaves. Add the rest of your seasonings and your spices of choice (or the remainder of your taco packet). Let it simmer until thick and BOOM! Chili.
    Serve over rice or chips and top with cheese. May not be the best chili, but a cold night with empty pockets makes this hit the spot

    when looking for food imagine 5 categories in front of you when you eat (4 foods 1 drink)
    1-Carbs (potatoes/rice e.c.t)
    2-Protein (chicken/beef e.c.t)
    3-Fresh Vegetable + Cooked vegetables (Carrots/tomatos e.c.t) + (onions to add with mince for example or cooked asparagus e.c.t)
    4-Fruit
    5-Hydration (Tea/Milk/Water e.c.t)
    and always eat salty/plain meals with bread (black/white, sweet and sour, seeded/seedless, doesnt matter just get bread) - fills you up more
    out of these categories pick the most affordable things and you should be good to go for weeks if you pick a couple of each item
    try make things in big pots so you can store them in fridge to eat next day or/and the day after (anything that can be refrigerated)
    To a lot of people spending £10+ on food for one person every day is not cheap, a month that can get to 240+ on food, multiplies with every extra person to feed. a family of 3 can spend over 600 a month on these recipes. Not very affordable to people on minimal wage for example - especially if theres 2 or more people to feed but only 1 person in the house getting income

    Ignorant editors, it's $5, not 5$. From the comments, that's not your only failing, just your first.

    The reason it’s called low cost is because what if one day u don’t have enough money on buying food 😕 so when u don’t u can just pop out one of these recipes out of the freezer heat it up and eat it 😐 jeez people

      That doesn't make it any cheaper and when you prepare all those not so cheap meals at the start of the month you are more likely to be broke by the end... Overall you didn't save a penny.

      Wrong. You save money because you already have the food, so you don't have to buy more at the end of the month. You will save lots of pennies.

    Ok that's it I'm eating nothing but these types of meals for the rest of my life! This will help me greatly when it comes to having fuel that gives me a boost for my work outs!

    I am a savvy shopper. I see ppl complaining that the ingredients are too expensive. I can make this work for me and my family.

    What I cook every week: 500 grams tofu (€1), 500 grams frozen vegetables (€0.90), fresh vegetables (€~1.20) and some rice (~€0.50). I fry small tofu cubes and then stir fry it with the vegetables, soy sauce, fish sauce and when it's all warm some oyster sauce. With two people, we can eat for two days. Which would make it 90 cents for one meal.
