  • The fun adventure I had collecting the elassoma gilberti in FL: • Collecting HUNDREDS of...
    The elassoma gilberti is one of the most spectacular fish that I have been able to keep. They are such a unique and interesting fish in both their coloration and behavior. I having kept them for a year and half now I have a much better idea both how to care for them and how they behave in tanks,
    Hopefully after this video you will have a greater appreciation for the Gulf Coast Pygmy Sunfish, the most underated nano fish in the hobby.
    Also, the more of these latin names I've learned, the easier it is to just call them by it to avoid confusion, plus they are shorter than the common names so why do we have common names.
    What do you prefer to call this fish? Elassoma gilberti? or Gulf Coast Pygmy Sunfish? Tell me in the comments below because I am genuinely interested.

    I was so happy to see you put out a video about these fish. So little information about them. Do do they eat shrimp???

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 роки тому

      So, in their native habitat they are surrounded with thousands of shrimp. I'd imagine that they do eat shrimp, but they can only really fit tiny little shrimplets into their mouths. They have a hard enough time eating an adult white worm, so an adult shrimp isn't going to fit into their mouths. As for them harassing and pestering shrimp to the point of death, I haven't seen that in my tank, but that is because I have very little shrimp and lots of cover.
      I have a friend who is currently housing them in shrimp tanks so I will have to pick his brain about them and will make a video about that here in the future once he has had them for awhile or once I get more shrimp into my tanks.
      Sorry that I couldn't be more helpful.

      @@TheAquariumLibrary do you find that even wild specimens convert over to aquarium life easily or do you find that you lose a good amount of them due to not wanting to make the change to aquarium life? I am planning on ordering this species soon and would like to know since the source I'm getting from is more or less wild caught ones and not tank bred ones.

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 роки тому +1

      They made the change to the aquarium pretty easily. The problem I had was in aquariums if they are packed in there the smaller ones got singled out and I would only lose them. I was able to reduce losses by putting a lot more spawning mops in the tank and basically had it packed with them and saw deaths decrease. My friends that have gotten the others from the trip haven’t had any losses in their larger tanks. I tried putting 30 into two 5 gallon tanks and they had 12-16 in 20 or 30 gallon tanks with lots of plants and cover.

    I think your Elassoma gilberti are absolutely fascinating & beautiful. Their fin dance is marvelous, and I confess I love blue. Their short life span is a drawback, but they look worth it. I’m hoping to set up a 20 or 29 gallon heavily (eventually) planted tank in about 2 months after moving to a new apartment. I would love to have a set of these but am hesitant due to their need for live food. I’m handicapped & can’t make regular runs to a pet store for live food & don’t feel confident or competent enough to raise live food myself at this point. If you raise some accustomed to flake food or have been in contact with someone in the Boston, MA area who breeds them, I would be extremely interested. Thank you for posting about them.

I've set ip a hospital tank and put them in there with salt and tried a fungal medication which killed them a lot faster. Seems they are a very delicate fish. I won't get these little fish anymore. To sad to see them look so good to dying within a month.

    • @TheAquariumLibrary
      @TheAquariumLibrary  2 роки тому +1

      I’ve heard from other people 1 per square foot of tank bottom if you want lots of colored up males. The more heavily planted/decorated the more you can squeeze into a tank. I’d think 2 males with 3 females would be a good combo for that tank size if not a little more. You might be able to even get two fully colored males depending on the amount of line of sights breaks you have.
      In my 27 gallon cube I have two males and have one dominant, colored up male and one sub-dominant male that will flare up and contest the dominant male. I also have 1 female in there.
      One friend of mine has 13 juveniles and sub-adults in a 20 long that is heavily planted and over grown. Just the way they like it. I’ll be showing that tank tomorrow in his fish room tour.

And like you said you can easily more them around to other tanks and they shouldn’t bother the other fish that much at all.

    I think colony breeding is OKAY.
    I would rather sell off most of the offspring and use the money generated to get some frozen foods and some more unrelated pairs to boost the genetic diversity of your founding population of fish.
    For example I start with 4 pairs, I would pick the 4 pairs out of all the offspring those 4 made to add on to the breeding group, while also adding another pair or two to the breeding group.
    Good way to reduce inbreeding while building your own genetically diverse group.
    If people are going to breed fish, we gotta think about establishing a very genetically diverse group so set up the hobby for success in the long run.
    After getting a diverse bloodline going, just cull heavily.
