Written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of Abba! It’s from a musical they wrote in the 80’s called Chess 🤗 One of my favourite one hit wonders ever!
And Tim Rice
@@toriboy25 yes, thank you for correcting me, not fair to leave him out!
@Karina Rodriguez - I'm Gen X, I had NO idea about this information, you @toriboy25 just blew my mind, lol. Makes sense why it was such a hit and why ABBA could not sing it, lol.
I Did not
Know this I’m a gen x also. We never had readily available info back then though. So many times I watch reactions and I had no idea what the songs were about. You had to buy the “album” to get the mystery lyrics
Played and sung initially by Murray Head. Later replaced with his brother Anthony Stewart Head who played Giles in Buffy tv series
In general, I would say this song was emphasizing mental pleasures over physical ones; And the game of Chess is considered a supreme mental exercise.
This is one of my favorite songs of All Time.
Yes
Same here - love it!
Now that I've seen the lyrics, it reminds me of back when me and the guys used to go to weekly heroclix tournaments
Same for my husband, there was a whole host of 80's music i had no idea i would like.
This song is a tie for me. Anthem from he same musical is also fantastic, and very emotional.
The man singing the lyrics in this musical is the reigning American chess world champion. He’s in Bangkok to defend his title against a soviet player. A game he ultimately loses to his Soviet opponent. The entire play uses a US-USSR chess rivalry as a metaphor for the Cold War, but this song is mostly known for the double-entendres. It’s one of my favorite musicals of all time.
Those guys from ABBA can write some fantastic songs.😀🎶👍❤️
Sure can. Ive lived with this song for years & even I didn’t know that!
He was talking about chess tournaments being held in all these big seedy cities but the chess players aren’t into all of the stuff normal tourists would be. They are after a ‘different’ type of queen - one that can’t be found on the streets but in the chess board. They get their kicks above the waistline - meaning their brains / cerebral fitness - chess is a brain game. Thats what I always got from this song. Loved this ! One of my favs.
You would think it was literally about chess but Chess, the rock opera not the game, is an allegory for the cold war spy game between east and west.
It's the curse of the traveling artist. All the cities look the same because you are focused on the next move on the board. It also as A LOT of double meanings...
You had to live the 80s to get this... it was pre dial-up lol...
This host doesn't get the song. He thinks the singer is a tourist. He was talking about being a musician gig hopping.
@@mrballoonpimp no. It was written for the musical Chess and is sung from the perspective of one of the players in an international tournament in Thailand.
@Johnny96ri
How do you know
I still think it has other meaning but I'm open to being wrong
@@mrballoonpimp Because it was written for the musical...which is about an international chess tournament in Thailand.
This song is from an musical called chess. The chess tournament is being held in Bangkok. You should react to Abracadabra by the Steve Miller band soon.
He's a HUGE ABBA fan and the Chess play was written and Directed by BENNY AND BJORN. The two men from ABBA❤❤
The musical essentially is about a famous Russian chess player wanting to defect to the US. The chess tournament was held in Bangkok..
It's held in Merano. At least in act 1.
@@thebronywiking This song opens Act 2. In the stage version, the beginning cacophony is twice as long and starts with the orchestra tuning up to an A.
@@rickardroach9075 In Merano the Russian played the American, who is quite an antagonist. The Russian wins, I think because the American has a hissy fit and forfeits. He's portrayed as a bit of a dick. This second act is some significant time later, a year or more, and the Russian is defending his title against another player and the American from the Merano match shows up as a member of the press gallery. This song is being sung by the American as a journalist doing his field piece from Bangkok and basically belittling the place because he's still a bit of a dick. The thing is from the cold war but makes both sides look childish and petulant instead of the typical hero American and cold Russian trope we were fed constantly in the 1980s.
Ohh yessss! This song came out when I was a teenager. The 80’s were the Best!!
Yeah me too! I was in Jr high.
Agree. 80s were the best.
Pressed the like button right away because I know this song and love it.
"The sound of this song is unique" like you said, because it was composed by Bjorn and Benny from ABBA.... and like every ABBA songs it is Unique
Jayvee obviously doesn’t know the background to this song. It’s about playing chess and not being involved in the nightlife. It’s from the musical Chess
Lyrics by Tim Rice. Lyrics by Bjorn and music from Benny. Perfection.
From what I have understood Tim Rice mainly worked with the overall story and the play, Benny with the music and Björn with the lyrics. But as it is a joint project and the lyrics has to fit the story I guess it can sometimes be hard to know who did what.
@@standersson6420 You might be right since Benny Anderson was the music of ABBA, and Björn the lyrics.
Björn and Tim wrote the Lyrics, mostly Björn.
And Anders Glenmark singing the chorus
A fave of mine. The whole soundtrack to "Chess" is excellent.
I LOVED this song when it came out! As others have already said, it's from the musical 'Chess,' about a chess tournament held in Bangkok, where two women are competing for the love of one of the players. Fun fact: the singer of this song, Murray Head, is the brother of Anthony Head, who played Giles in the tv series 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Angel.'
Anthony Head was also Nathan/Repo Man in the film Repo: The Genetic Opera, and when this musical first premiered in the West End in 1986, Anthony would take over as The American/Freddie Trumper, after his brother Murray who originated this role in that production.
ua-cam.com/video/HcNL8kafqtg/v-deo.html
Always such a fun song. "Siam gonna be the witness to the ultimate test of cerebral fitness." (Chess)
I always loved this song. It was such an anthem for nerds like me. lol
It’s awesome
The sound of this song is absolutely unique.❤❤❤
I was a teenager when this came out...I used to know every word and lipsyncing for my mirror... pre-tiktok 😁
Absolutely! We were pros and didn't need all of the thumbs up☝ as approval either.
Love your style my friend, keep it up! You actually react instead of interrupting 17 times in a two-minute song. LOL
Yeah there are several I've seen that only stop to talk about random stuff...they only wanna hear themselves talk rather than actually react to something new. Like their title says of their vid.
Murray Head performing this on Top of the Pop has to be one of the best examples of " I really don't give a s#*t " that I have ever seen.
Oh my days, THANK YOU! I’d never seen that but looked it up after reading your comment. What a legend, that was epic!
@@Kagsy_BRD thank you Karina. Good to know it's as I remember it.
Part of that is that he's staying in character - the American literally couldn't give a s#*t about anyone or anything but himself - it's why the lyrics are so sarcastic. He was also the original Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar and strangely enough had a hit single then too.
@@alphaomega7191 fair point but a small part I feel. I think that's Murray Head who couldn't even be arsed to learn the lyrics or keep time to the music.
"I bet you'd watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you"
More songs need lyrics of this calibre.
Maybe 80s movie soundtrack songs could be a new direction. "You're The Best", "Show Me Heaven", think you've done "Take My Breath Away"?, "Flashdance", "Fame"...
‘just a girl’ by no doubt soon!!!! my favorite
This song is *so* early 80s. Fantastic stuff.
Love this song
I always crack up at the way says "so you better go back to your bars, your temples, your massage parlors..."
On my 80s playlist always!!
He’s not a one hit wonder, he also sung « Say it ain’t so ». Such a beautiful song.
Great song - and of course he had Superstar and Heaven on their Mind back when he was Judas.
But that song only charted in one country, # 18 in France. In the US he only charted with one other song. "Superstar" that got to #14 in 1969.
Lead singer of Radiohead!
Murray is the older brother of Anthony Stewart Head, who played Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
He wrote a song about high-level chess -- chess -- and it's still a masterpiece 40 years later.
This song is a about a chess match with double entendres about the night life in Bangkok as well
From a 'musical' from the 80's called 'Chess', it was about... well, chess. I believe it was written by Benny and Bjorn from ABBA.
Chess and Cold War drama*
One of the best catchy tunes in the 80s! I remember hearing it is about two chess chess players one is the Soviet and the other American in Bangkok. And something to do with the cold war at the time. One of the best songs of the time! Peace! ✌☮
The fantastic musical score written by Benny and Bjorn from ABBA... I know him so well also from Chess...
For those who don't know, the singer in the video, Murray Head is the elder brother of the actor (Anthony Stewart Head) who plays the character Giles on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer".
Or as UK viewers know him Anthony the guy in the coffee adverts.
@@Hi-kq1vi Or as appearing in Little Britain.
@@electromaniac1 Much later though, long before Buffy & LB he was the guy in the Gold Blend ads.
Oh shit, you’re right. I thought he looked familiar.
@@Hi-kq1vi hahahahaha
Song written by Benny and Bjorn from ABBA - they wrote the CHESS musical.
"I wanna be a cowboy" by Boys Don't Cry and "The future's so bright (i gotta wear shades) by Timbuk 3
The brother of Anthony Head, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Technically a one hit wonder, he was the lead singer on the hit Jesus Christ Superstar from the '60s. From a musical taking place at a chess tournament. Music by the guys from ABBA, words from the lyricist for Jesus Christ Superstar.
Oh wow. I love Buffy and I know this song, but I never realized they were brothers.
@@ZennaD Yup, they really look alike.
Who knew???
I had no idea they were brothers! Whenever I've heard his name, it always reminds me of Anthony Head, but it never occurred to me they might be related. lol
@@bellephegor I see that now and can't unsee it.
I did this show in college. This is the only song I really remember ( other than "I know him so well"). In my defense, I was stoned in college...
Another great song. Thank you. 👍🎶
Digging deeper into the 80s. I love that you're doing this. These are all songs that played on the radio in the 80s every day, and a lot of them, like this one, are largely forgotten in today's 80s playlists. Good job man!
Murray Head also had a hit single with “Superstar” from the 1970 album musical “Jesus Christ Superstar“ in which he played Judas.
That's all I've known him for for decades...Pontious Pilate!
I was singing this in Wal-mart just a couple hours ago.
Matt, you should be a comedian, one of those alternative ones who observe real life and make it interesting and funny. Loved the Walmart incident! 😂 When I was in New York ion vacation from London, I was in a CVS and this song came in. I couldn't help but walk purposefully around to the beat, even threw in a couple of fancy moves. It was New York, no one took a blind bit of notice... 🗽❤️That's why I love the place.
You do that too? 😂😂😂😂
I find myself singing most tunes in Walmart now. Lol
Love this song. I used to dance like a crazy woman to this......😊.....don't over think this song. It is fantastic.
The song was from the point of view of a chess grandmaster that came to Bangkok to play chess and not be distracted by the city. This song was writen by members of the band ABBA and performed by Murray Head. It was writen as a piece in the musical "Chess".
This is from a play called chess. Listen to the entire album sometime. It is excellent.
You finally made your reaction to this song, I was waiting for it ... I love it, good music ............... thank you.
This song is part of the musical Chess. Was musicaly produced by Bjorn and Benny from ABBA. Other musical hit is I Know Him So Well.
This song was so different in the 80s. That's why I liked it.
Another remake to react to - Putin’ on the Ritz by Taco
I was a teen when this came out and it was catchy and hard not to like, sounds like something that came from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom lol. If you Like this you will probably like Wang Chung's Everybody Have Fun Tonight.
Heck yeah.....love that song too.
I always liked Wang Chung's earlier song "Dance Hall Days" more. I think it was the early video shows and channels playing it late at night made it seem more 'mysterious' or something sounding.
Oh Yes Dance Hall Days is Definitely a Good one too
This was from a Broadway show in the 80’s which was in fact, called simply “Chess”.
Hope you check out Billy Ocean's LOVERBOY... it was one of the biggest hits of the 80's. x
I was in Bangkok about 6 months after this song came out. (mid eighties0.
It was certainly an eye opener for the young me at the time.
Love Thailand. The people are generally quite friendly and it's a relatively safe place to visit.
Oh sir, I am HERE for this!
I love this song lol
The singer in the song, Murray Head, is the older brother of Anthony Stewart Head who's best known as Buffy's Watcher, Rupert Giles, on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".
Great song.
I love it from the very beginning, it's got such an exotic feel to it.
Written by the 2 guys from ABBA and performed brilliantly by Murray Head.
"I'd let you watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you"
Favourite line, I saw this musical when it toured NZ wasn't into it but loved this song.
I know every instrumental nook and cranny of this song. EVERYONE!!! It is one of my all time favourites!!!!!! YESSS
I fucking love this song.
From this musical Chess, there's the song "I know him so well", sung by Elaine Paige (the singer, Susan Boyle admired) and Barbara Dickson. The music is written by Björn and Benny from Abba, so it is a kind of Abba song with other, very good singers. Please consider to react to this as well!!!
Later, Susan Boyle sang this song together with her star Elaine Paige, and both did it very well.
I've got the 12' of this.
;)
I used this song to make an invitation video to my 50th birthday party but then Covid hit. Love this song & the 80's. ✨🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾💜
This song is from the musical Chess that was written by Benny and Bjorn from ABBA, and the guy singing it is the older brother of Anthony Stewart Head who played Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The singer's brother is Anthony Steward Head. He is a British actor who most famously played Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
This song was the SHIT when it came out and was played constantly on radio. An 80s favorite and classic!
This was one of my favorite songs in the 80's! The flute solo is phenomenal. Fun bit of trivia - Murray Head is the brother of Anthony Stuart Head who played Giles on the Buffy the Vampire TV series.
Oh take me back to the 80's!
One of my favourite songs from the 80's. "the arbitor" from the same musical is also good. Murray Head is the brother of English actor Anthony Head.
This song I remember when I was a little girl, I'm a 80's big fan. ❤️
2. I love this song as a kid
As many times as I've heard this song, I don't recall ever seeing the video. Great choice and thanks for sharing!
Love the way the music swirls in this great song!! Love your reaction!
Peaches & Herb-Shake Your Groove Thing
Excellent choice!!!
@@kimwallace907 Thank you
YES PLEASE!!!
One of the most unique songs (and videos) ever.
It was a unique song then and still is now, and yes much like alotta eighties songs it sounds so good in the car... you just don't ever forget songs like this J...:)
Fabulous song this one. 80s does it again❤️💕
Beautiful song of all time of the 80s...
This song was written for a movie called "Chess", so what I gather is that he is singing from the perspective of a professional chess player, not so much a tourist.
Like the line "One town's very like another, when your head's down over your pieces, brother." So it's like he is the chess player singing to the simple tourists.
Say it ain't so Joe, Never even thought, and many more gorgeous songs were written by Murray Head. He wrote even French lovely song... Check out his discography!
We need some more Bee Gee's they literally have hundreds of songs.
This is a great tune as usual by Björn and Benny. And i watched some other video of Murray Head singing in the 70s and damn he is good.
The 80s are the peak of music, though I'm biased due to being a teenager at the time. 😉
I had the cassette to this song,my daughter and I loved this song out of all the songs on it.
WAS JUST THINKING OF THIS SONG LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know this will get buried, but after watching your reaction to Bangkok UA-cam suggested me Sandra - Maria Magdalena. I totally forgot about this song, I loved it as a child, and it goes well with 80's hits theme :) check it out someday.
Back in the day, we would listen to this song over and over again trying to figure out what the lyrics were. In the pre-Internet era, they were quite a few songs like that. I’m laughing as I recall the arguments with my friends over what this guy was singing.
“He said God’s a sheep!”
“He said she, dummy.” Lol.
I remember that lots of people wondered why there were Tea Girls Warm & Sweet some are set up in the Somerset Maughan Suite not realising that it's really T-Girls.
Written by the ABBA boys - Bjorn and Benny with lyrics by Tim Rice from the musical "Chess". Some of these songs from "Chess" were rejected or unused portions of ABBA songs. For instance a song they sang during their 1977 international tour titled "I am an A" became "I Know Him so Well" in Chess. Great music.
My Dad loves this song he got me hooked on it, the beat is so catchy 👍
haha it's so interesting to see a reaction to this song if you aren't aware that it's from a musical- like others have said, it's a song from the musical "Chess", written in the 80's from the boys from ABBA. it's about 2 chess grand masters playing in a tournament, who are also fighting over the same woman. they tour the world playing chess, with this match occurring in Bangkok. I loved this soundtrack as a kid, and now I wonder how my parents let me listen to it as the whole musical is fairly subversive lol.
Well the American isn't really fighting over the woman - he's just being a jerk because ... well because he's a jerk. "Pity the Child" sums up the character and his feelings so well - he knows what he's doing is wrong but he's so self pitying and self-absorbed that he hurts others just to feel better about himself. He doesn't care about her - it's that she left him to go with his rival that is the issue for him.
One of the best musicals ever made - Great variety in genres and none of the songs sound the same (as they do in AL Webber musicals).
Funny how both AL Webber's earlier musicals and this one have the same lyricist Tim Rice on board.
Same with how Murray Head, the main singer here, was also the original Judas of the 1970 cast recording of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Please react to the Pet Shop Boys - Domino Dancing
The long play version
Chess, an underrated show! Watch checkers, on UA-cam. It’s Chess, the concert. But called checkers to stop it from getting banned! It’s brilliant! 🥰
Mike Tyson's rendition in The Hangover 2. Legendary! 🤣🍻
Murray Head is the brother of Anthony Stewart Head, who you may recognize as Giles in the TV show "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", or as Rupert in the TV show "Ted Lasso"
A pop song about real issues! It was quite a hit in my 80's.
Story song. Yup. Thx for reaction. Takes us right there! Not much between despair & ecstasy .......
The hook is sung by Swedish singer Anders Glennmark who was a big star in Sweden in the 90s mostly due to him being in the group GES, they mostly did songs in Swedish but it’s a nice 90s band.
It’s from a musical-Chess. Murray Head sang the part of Judas in the original version of Jesus Christ Superstar, which is fabulous. The album. The musical Chess is about a puppet master & the ‘the chess game’ of power. His brother, Anthony, played the part of Giles the librarian in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. He can sing too.
I've actually heard this song in a bar in Bangkok.
It was my third--I think--of FIVE nights in Bangkok. 1996.
Love this one when it comes on the car radio the volume goes up
One of the best songs of all time. I have this full blast driving down the road having the time of my life everytime
Murray Head spitting bars!
