Textured paint, rifle stock remodel

  • I have been stuck inside during the 2014 Polar Vortex of Death cold spell, so I spent time tinkering in the shop. I decided to try a Rustoleum paint product to renew the stock on my Remington model 7 rifle. I share before and after video of how it turned out. Now I need to get to range and spend some trigger time.

    5 years later, how well did it hold up?
    Thanks!

    I like that paint . Great Job . How has it held up for you ? I bought some furniture for my rifle and I save around 40.00 buying black it was discounted ,where none of the tan green or plum etc were not . Which allowed me to buy a fore end for it instead of buying just a buttstock alone and waiting to grab the fore end later . And I figured I could paint the black and original color instead of following the pack . I have to say I am glad I ran across your video.Have a good one & God Bless

    I just bought another Marlin rifle , this one's a model 60 with wood stock,..and only complaint is that it is slippery as heck, even when dry. It is my intent to change this finish anyway and
    this textured paint might just be the way for me to go. I am about to refinish the stock anyway,...so yeah,..I like the looks of this Remington's finish.

    Nice looking finish. The thing I dislike about spray paint is you never know how well it is going to adhere. Sometimes it sticks forever and sometimes it starts peeling when you least expect it. Rustoleum is pretty good stuff and you did a good surface prep so hopefully it will last a lifetime. Thanks for sharing this idea along with the project results.

      mtslyh I am hesitant to say this will work long term, but I'm gonna give it a go. I'll report back any issues that come about. It seems to be a quality product by Rustoleum, we shall see. Thanks for adding to the discussion , Jon

      I always use adhesion promoter with all my rattle can jobs, whatever your painting you just apply 1 light coat with the adhesion promoter, I've never had any peeling or flaking issues, The brand I'm using now is called bulldog, but I don't think it matters I've used all different brands I think it's all the same stuff, Walmart near me has it but some don't , guaranteed you can find it at any auto body shop though and as long as you're doing small projects one can of adhesion promoter will last you a long time , I think the can I have now I've had almost a year and I've done a bunch of small projects, An old body shop guy had told me about this he said do your prep as usual make sure it's really clean and then a light coat of adhesion promoter give it about 10 minutes and then spray your topcoat

    Do you believe this would work well on a polymer forearm on a 12 guage? I'd like the wood furniture look without having to hunt down matching pieces.

    Thats a inexpensive cure to a rough looking stock. Looks like a marlin gold medallion color 22lr look to it, if my screen colors are right. Good job

    • @jonwithnoh7
      @jonwithnoh7  10 років тому

      Lumberman2011 it is a medium brown color on the stock, the gray background makes it hard to see well. I am experimenting with some different benchtop covers to find one that works with video. Not sure if the gray is a good choice yet. Thanks for adding to the discussion , Jon

    Looks good!! I just redid my .270 synthetic stock in brown. Now it looks like it has a wooden stock. I’ll take it!!

    Nice work! It turned out really nice. I have a rifle that I've been meaning to try a rattle can cammo job on. Good idea for a winter project. Thanks for sharing.

      @jonwithnoh7  10 років тому

      Thanks ccreyeder no reason with a couple colors, a camo job could be done. I can do more, and use this as a base, with other colors, but I'm afraid I'd muck it up and make it look like heck.

    Do you know if Rustoleum makes a black texture spray paint? I would like to try this on my black plastic stock 12 gauge break over 12 gauge! Just to give it a bit more grippy texture.

      Kris Says: the color has lasted well, a few nicks here and there, but held up pretty good.

      I have done this with flat earth even with clear coat after every deer season it needs repainting. Doesn't wear well .this year i will remove all paint .hopefully it didn't ruin the srock..

    Why would you just leave the splotch when you could take light sand paper and sand the splotch to match the paint

    Can i use paint directly to my gunstock without applying basecoat?

  • @Fister_of_Muppets

    Wow, that looks really good, the color makes it look like a darker wood stain. I have a black synthetic stock on a gun that I have been looking to change-up, I might give this a try.

      RPMIDAHO I would imagine Rustoleum also has this paint in black, but I do not recall seeing it when I got this can. Black would be good too.
