Yeah, there's merit trying to do it all in blender but the specialty of pepakura is hard to pass up for me. I will say that if I were to design a paper craft and was the only person making it, I wouldn't be putting this much effort and thought into making a more user friendly template.
I make all my paper crafts out of paper not printed paper for my bfdi craft s and they are so good I just made liy so think u so much viq to make bfdi come to life❤❤
I haven't looked all that into it but I do remember seeing a online one that takes prompts or images and can give you a 3d model with a few choices to choose from. Might be worth looking at If you find 3d modeling hard and aren't too picky with the result.

there is a blender addon to export it all in blender as papercraft but i usually make voxelated charaters anyway so i make the whole thing in gimp
