    I'm a historical reenactor and many years ago, I noticed that a lot of the "manly men" in my group were having all these conversations about hats and shoes and colours and new clothing. In the context of reenactment, there isn't any reason to label them "sissies" (to borrow Jacob Tobia's excellent word). They are just reenactors trying to get the look of the historical people they represent correct. But there was something more. Men in our society have not had license to express themselves through clothing for nearly 200 years. And reenactment somehow gave these butch guys an excuse to "play in the dress-up box". I think we all need that. We all need to adorn ourselves. And to assume it's a feminine thing is to miss the point. As Trevor found, he looked more traditionally African in earrings! Men don't have to be trans to wear skirts. Women wear trousers all the time and we don't have to be trans to do it. I think gender nonconformity is an amazing thing for all people on the gender spectrum. Thanks Jacob Tobia for teaching us about it through your journey!

      I have had a similar experience amongst high level viking fighting reenactors. Before a big battle with the swedes I overheard a group of men eagerly discussing how one guy had decorated the sleeves of his robe, and how did that stitching to make the fabric sit a certain way. And this was not unusual. Bearded, badass warriors who enjoys a chance to sow and embroider and play.

    • @Maracujakeks
      @Maracujakeks 5 років тому +25

      Cheers on that. I'm all about men wearing makeup, nailpolish, skirts, whatever they feel like. Because we all should be able to express ourselves. Men shouldn't be afraid to appear feminine.The only reason those things are considered feminine is because we as a society put a label on it, but men can redefine their masculinity by embracing this style, if they feel like it. Masculinity is still terribly fragile but if we start making it more stable the world could be a kinder place, I believe.

      yes, we feel the need to categorize so that we can decide in a flash how we should interact with someone, based on our preconceived biases. it is a base human instinct that has been commandeered by the powers-that-be to divide and conquer us for eons. if we were not conditioned to judge the content of a person by their appearence, this would just be a guy with long hair and make-up in a dress, ho-hum, so what. when there is a female in exactly the same fashion, no one thinks twice. if he sat there in a suit and tie with short hair and only tv make-up, no one would think twice. he makes us uncomfortable because he makes us think twice. twice about how to interact with him, how to treat him.
      this just really shows how strong discrimination still is. we need to know if we are dealing with male/female, young/old, black/white, etc. because we treat each group differently, some better, some worse. it reminds me how some white people get super offended when they accidentally treat a black person like they would a white person, because they thought the black person was white on the phone for example. i have seen this happen in several scenarios and it is always mind-blowing how the white person is clearly pizzed off that they have been 'tricked'.

I love how you can tell he actually reads the books of people he brings on the show, not just questions from cue cards that his staff hands him. He's always 100% engaged, and he lets them answer the questions instead of interrupting them to try and press his own ideas or turn everything into a joke.
    I approve of the notion of addressing the conversation with acceptance, respect and humor. I don't want people to feel scared of asking me about asexuality, or to feel discouraged from asking about those questions. And I hate the idea of conversations being shut down before they even begin because it feels so dangerous on either side to broach the topic at all. I've always thought conversations had with good intent and an open mindset are far more productive and insightful than those that feel like a verbal jenga tower.

    The reason Trevor stands out from the hordes of late night show hosts is that despite being liberal I rarely see non white, non cis guests and there's few conversations about the fact that the reason most people are biased against women and still like the standard issue white dude as is evident in polls and don't think anything is wrong with that. Trevor is the only person truly being the kind of host you can trust. I like Colbert and Seth but like I said they are still not touching these topics when it's this close to the election. And Maher some of his points are valid but he does nothing but shame people and doesn't ever see anything wrong with it. To use a popular term Trevor is truly WOKE.

    Most of the comments here are just...just ignorant and hateful. Jacob is wonderful for having the courage to be themselves, whereas most people in this world choose to live a life of lies; claiming they're "pure," "honest," "patriotic" and "honorable souls."
    It's those kind of people that are tearing the world apart, even as we speak. No one should be hated or punished for having the courage for being who they are, even if their lifestyles seem "immoral" to you. In my eyes; the only things that are "immoral" are racism, sexism, child abuse, bullying, war, greed, selfishness, and using religions like Christianity to bully people into doing what they say.
    If you live a life where you inspire others to be themselves, to be good people, to be loving/kind/generous and/or respectful to others and if you dedicate yourself to making this a better world so that EVERYONE can be prosperous...you are people worth honoring. But if you choose to live a life where you hate others for little reason, a life where you wish death upon those others without reason or cling to the lies of evil people; it is YOU who are the real scum...not individuals like Jacob

Egyptian men wore eye liner, british men wore wigs, irish scottish wore kilts (modern days skorts) horseman wore heels and leggings, and knee high boots. Its all the same.....we are all the same. We should be able to be naked in front of the world with no shame. We should be focusing on our morals so that we dont fear rape or ridicule from any gender. I want to live in a society where a man can use the bathroom right next to me with out fear. Without fear....that should be our focus. Not the clothes not the bathroom but the morals. That as a society we dont need to rape, steal, stare at our brothers. Once we take that shame away, fear will go away. Love will fill the gaps. The commandments will shine thru naturally.

    I really enjoyed this interview . I am a gay man ( and dislike the label) I’m a man who loves men and honestly for a time I felt uncomfortable and embarrassed at gay pride marches all gays were lumped together just like all blacks are not Afro American there is a diversity within the culture. Drag is drag be it a white lab coat, policemen’s outfit , cowboy or a Donna Summers look alike . The androgynous drag queens I referred to as Shock sheena and found many of the shock sheena’s did it for the shock factor and a form of comedy and income and an art form . Instead of being embarrassed I came to love them and photographed them at my studio regularly . One of my closest friends drag name Connie Casserole lead the way making it an art form all of its own .I never felt compelled to dress in women’s clothing or a 3 piece suit I just disliked the labeling not the people. These gender benders are extremely brave people it takes balls to walk the streets of NYC let alone some Midwest little Creep town. It’s amazing how many Muzak songs we hear in the background of elevators tell the story of transgenders ie Lou Reed “ walk on the wild side “ the Kinks “ Lola “ and of course Multiple David Bowie songs.

While you’re right that there are two different sexes, as you’re originally born with either XX or XY chromosomes, gender is different, as gender is how your brain identifies. When someone has a disconnect from the gender they were assigned at birth, it’s called gender dysphoria. There currently is no known treatment for gender dysphoria other than the person making changes in their appearance to lessen their gender dysphoria. This is why people are transgender! Some of us cisgender folks are actually quite comfortable in our skin and with our gender identity and don’t need to busy ourselves playing dress up and making careers out of convincing people that this an important issue that we all need to be thinking about. To be clear I don’t believe anybody should be discriminated against nor do I harbor any disdain for people who aren’t having the same experience that I am as a human being. It’s just that when I hear ideas being espoused such as the notion that an ideal world would be one where we all try on different gender identities on a whim like trying on different costumes I really can’t help but cringe. Maybe for some individuals, sure, but for most people this is nonsense. Most people I would say are quite comfortable with their gender identity and the constant promotion of the idea that we shouldn’t be is a real problem in my estimation.

      I think you're fundamentally misunderstanding why it is so important to have these conversations. Because when you say "Why do we need to have these conversations. Why do we need to make a big deal out of it?" You're unconsciously invalidating and dismissing a lot of the violence and trauma gender nonconforming people go through. The lack of human rights, the lack of social support and security. The abuse, the trauma, the very life threatening situations we are constantly put it because people don't want to engage and deconstruct not just gender but how that expands to how we treat people. I'm sure for you it isn't a big deal. Because you've never had to make the conscious decision to present in a way you know is going to affect how people treat you for the rest of your life. But for the kids that received bullying and abuse. For the people we've lost to gender based violence. The deep scar that the aids epidemic left on our community. The fact that the average life expectancy for a trans black women in america is 35. It is important to talk and discus and be able to encourage people to engage in gender in a way that is not constantly weighted down by preconceived notions and expectations. But instead rooted in love and acceptance and kindness. Learning how to be kind and non judgemental to others starts with learning how to be that to ourselves.

      I think this new group of people are seeking attention and are definitely getting the attention they want.....Soon schools will be teaching this type of confusion... In my thoughts I feel this is classic demonic possession in my opinion... We need too think about where our, "Inner Thoughts", come from.... The only people that I believe would be confused about gender would be those born with both sexual genders...

    The end bit is a perfect illustration of the fact that gender identities and expression are a product of one's culture. As other's have pointed out time also plays a huge factor. I've used the 80s myself as an example of a time when people regularly colored outside the lines of expression, and it wasn't a huge deal.
