Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2 - Square Eyed Jak

- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- The only Activision O2 game to get a sequel was Pro BMX, as this game was already well into development prior to the FIRST GAMES RELEASE! A confident follow up for sure but was it a quality follow up?

Best final level in any game ever.
Sorry, but did you just talk shit about Iggy Pop’s “The Passenger” in the intro? Them’s fighting words!
seriously, ive heard of bad taste but jesus.
I’ve never seen such a disjointed soundtrack, a good amount of it is brilliant (Gang of Four, Bad Brains, Eric B. & Rakim, Iggy Pop, etc.) and then there’s fucking Crazy Town and N.E.R.D. lol
My thoughts exactly, The Passenger is a great song
One of the best songs ever top 50 for sure
Right? Hard not to think now what kinds of songs he actually considers good xD
I seriously did a double take when I saw this pro sports game just turn into a fps all of a sudden. Like just imagine playing Doom Eternal and at the end you had to beat the final boss in a skateboarding competition.
You should see the PC version of THPS3. Doomguy is there.
Well the doom slayer does have a skateboard in his fortress 🤔
Love winning a game of NBA2K and then having LeBron James pull out a sword to go fight a colossus at the end.
@@kanemello Space Jam 2 plot leaked
Can't wait for the secret ending of Gran Turismo 7 where you have to beat your B spec driver at basketball
Whenever I heard Amoeba I always thought they were singing "Tony Haaaawwwk!"
good to know im not the only one haha
The final boss fight caught me so off guard I can't help thinking it's just so funny. It's the kind of weird I could actually love. We're definitely going to remember this game more than any other Hawktober O2 title we have seen so far, no matter whether it's for the best or for the worst.
Absolutely, more games need this kind of thing because as silly as it is, it's so much fun to discuss!
@@SquareEyedJak honestly, what can you really expect when a mega-profitable game publisher sees dollar signs?
I wish we could have gotten that random final boss (and the playable version of it) in a good game like THUG or something,; I really enjoy the thought of playing it, but not so much all the other stuff leading up to it in MHPBMX2.
@@SquareEyedJak How about a wrestling game again? My personal recommendation is WWE SmackDown! Vs. RAW (2004) for the PS2 and then follow it up with WWE 2K20 on PS4.
@@SquareEyedJaksince when did sports games become like f****** doom all of a sudden. What's next? Tony Hawks pro skater with a f****** BFG 9000
Having a sequel already in the works almost never ends well.
Yeah. At least with THPS1 they just tease the idea of a sequel at the end of the credits and nothing else.
In a different universe:
Me: *Beats THPS3*
Also Me: *”Why am I in FPS mode?”*
it was an awkward game but I personally really liked it. the music was great and the graphics and animations were really smooth. the soundtrack was also pretty awesome.
I didn't expect a goddamn Tiki final boss battle either. Game turned into fucking Turok all of a sudden, but that's just me when I saw that.
12:19 I mean ... I think that'd be an improvement to the FIFA games, sure.
At least it would have something ORIGINAL
I can't wait for you to look at Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer. That game surprised me a lot with how much I enjoyed it. But we'll see how you feel!
Dropping tomorrow, same time! 😄
I loved the demo for that
Paul, he's going to break our hearts, I just feel it.
@@kitgautier1658 You were not wrong.
@@paulw858 hahaha,. Unfortunately, I was not. Having said that, as I mentioned in a comment on that video, I can understand not enjoying the goals and such for KSPS, but I'm betting that you and I accomplished those goals 18 years ago and have only been playing free surf and multiplayer since then. :-)

That final level almost makes me want to love the game, almost.
The more you mention Proving Grounds, the more I really wanna get a used copy on PS3, sticks out to me more when the game had adverts of a new GUN game that was also developed by Neversoft.
Will you be doing the Dave Mira games?
I hope so!!
I generally think those are better than Mat Hoffman Pro BMX.
not activision 02, so it wpuld probably be next year or a one-off video sometime in the future
@@ChaseRogers2115 nah, Dave Mitra games were clunkier than the Mat Hoffman games.
@@sk8brdkee really cuz I was a pro bmx rider and literally every fellow bmx rider I know prefers Dave mirra freestyle bmx over the Matt Hoffman games.
That is the stupidest way to end a BMX game ever! Tiki Battle is something else. I laughed so hard at your commentary of it though. Halirious!
Love how this shows how Activision only puts effort into their successful series like tony hawk, and leaves the rest of the O2 games with little effort and just looks like they were trying to cash in on the Celebrities fame
Activision doesn't develop games. They publish them. I would get what you're saying except neversoft didn't make most of the 02 games.
Sequels normally improve upon the first game, and while Pro BMX 2 does improve things, its a "one step forward, two steps back" situation.
It still would have been nice to see these spin-offs getting improved sequels, but the oversaturation of extreme sports games lead to an untimely demise for the genre.
Just like the peripheral based rhythm game.
Probably practice for Call of duty.
Can someone PLEASE make these levels in THPS 1+2?? They would be great in a skateboarding setting 🔥🔥
THUG PRO
Can't wait until they come out with Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 1 + 2.
11:51 When I think of Mat Hoffman and Pro BMX, I think of giant Tiki monster that you have to shoot down. That is seriously the end to a BMX game. wow
Instead why not just make a giant possessed BMX that turned against Mat, where you have to destroy it, part by part by throwing explosive wrenches at it
That end bit at the end of the console version was just... WTF?!
Lol the most random thing ever
ive never had a final level catch me so off guard as this one. my jaw literally dropped
I never finished it so that really threw me off
The bails at 9:00 makes Mat looks more like he wants to be a pro helicopter than a pro bmx.
Matt Hoffman's Pro Chopper
11:43 This is like saying you play Resident Evil go around kill zombies and monsters and solve puzzles to progress through the game, but when you get to the final boss, you have to play Dance Dance Revolution to fight the boss, such uncanny concept
He spins in the air just like Crash Bandicoot!
Always loved the ways u remade the intros and logos, really skillfull!
Aaaahh thank you! 😊
You know, I was always interested in these games because I only ever played the demos of Shaun Palmer & the Wakeboarding one . Now I’m no longer interested.
I played those and the first Matt Hoffman demo and eventually got SPPS on PS2. Got bored of it.
The Hoffman games are the only “decent” games in the whole brand besides THPS. So yeah you’re not missing out on anything at all
oh, one more thing you never play Aggressive Inline is the same as Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3&4 you got to play this amazing game you do not miss.
More sports games should end with FPS kaiju boss fights
“The B.F.F-in’.G”
The Big Fuckin’ Fuckin’ Gun
Pro BMX 2 was being made beforw the first game was released?
Talk about the Osborn effect, where a company annpunces something before the thing they released had any traction!
Man I actually had sort of high hopes for this one! I really think that it could have worked in a Tony Hawks Underground setting instead of following the arcade Pro Skater style.
This is my childhood game. I enjoyed & loved the soundtrack. I still listen to the songs today. I also liked the cutscenes from the roadtrip. It was a major step up from the original.
Ah yes Humming The Bassline one of my favorite JSR songs....Jet Set Jak....no wait Square Eyed Radio review in the future one day?
I saw people talking about the boss fight at the end and thought they were talking about a skit our dude Jak might've done...but no...
IT'S ACTUALLY IN THE GAMEEE?! THE FUCKKK?!
Wow.... I could not have guessed that game's ending AT ALL.
Oh really? Think it was quite predictable tbh. 🤔
2:19 Sorry, Jak, but you're absolutely wrong about The Passenger by Iggy Pop. This song is a timeless classic and the best song in this game's soundtrack, comparable to She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult in Dave Mirra 2. But it makes sense given you have shit taste in music :^)
Honestly the fact that the final level is an FPS is amazing. Name a twist more shocking. They know why they did and it was brilliant. In spite of all the glaring issues. I loved this game but hated it, probably for all these reasons I couldn’t articulate as a youngin.
He disrespected Matt Hoffman Pro Bmx 2 opening song iggy passenger... I'ma head out
Havent watched the vid yet, but I have this game still and really enjoy it. I’m thinking 6/10
Edit: oof a 4. That’s rough.
Let me know how that goes.
@@SquareEyedJak not very well :,(
"bidley twangy music".... You know that's iggy pop you're disrespecting right?
Are we getting a video on BMX XXX, I feel like this is what we're building up to.
That was published by Acclaim, so he’d have to do Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX first, and maybe even Thrasher: Skate and Destroy before that because it’s the same developer.
@@DoswarePictures It was originally supposed to be Dave Mirra 3, even.
@@PoisonedPocky I’m well aware about what happened
I liked the first game but something about this one always put me to sleep. Can't wait for the rest of the reviews, I've only played demos of the last 3 games.
Do any of the O2 games use the "Pick and choose" mission structure of 4? Probably not but the Hoffman series looks like it really needed
From the developers of Cars on PS2 comes the only sequel in the O2 lineup... which makes me wonder just how far in development Shaun Palmer 2 was in development before it got canned...
11:50
Someone on the development team REALLY wanted to make a shooter game but thought it wouldn't fit the O2 brand so they just made it a mini game in their throwaway BMX game... INGENIOUS!
Can't Vicarious Visions make ONE portable outing for the O2 Subseries?
@@TimGaukerToons I think Vicarious was busy with other clients.
@@DoswarePictures they had tons of GBA games under their belt for sure, licensed games, sports games, portable versions of popular console games... CRASH!
we went from Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2 to Serious Sam real quick
Now I wanna see Frame Rater talk about these games, which he’ll get to when he reaches them alphabetically on his GameCube library miniseries.
Never had a chance to play this one and kinda glad for that. Top notch review mate. With the amount of work you have done to make this years Hawktober its great to see you still keeping it fresh and evolving. :)
Bought this game just this year, huge fan of the first. Excellent video mate
Does anyone remember BMX XXX? It's probably shit but I had a lot of fun playing this with my friend back in the day. We were actually riding bmx bikes in real life so we kinda did a game in a game thing - one of us did a combo line in a specific place and the other one had to repeat it. Great times :D
I almost bought it.
@@DoswarePictures I still have the illegal copy along with the chipped XBOX at my parents house, so yeah... :D
That would be the 3rd Dave Mirra game, which was Mat Hoffman's competitor at the time. Dave had the better first game, though honestly Mat Hoffman BMX 2 is the better sequel compared to Dave Mirra 2. BMX XXX is uh... its something.
@@Xindictive so much something that Dave dropped out.
@@Xindictive Oh, I did not know it was supposed to be Dave Mirra 3.

As a tony hawk fan, Are these games worth buying and playing through?
Most of them are incredibly cheap so for curiosity sake, maybe. But in general, I'd say no.
Can't wait for you to cover Dave Mirra freestyle BMX 2, I played the hell out of that game. Mostly the wipeout mode because of the hilarious ragdoll physics and awesome maps , overall great game and worth checking out.
I havent ridden an actual bike since this game came out
I don't think I've ever tapped so fast on a video before 😂
I am dying at the ending!! 😂😂 Well done Jak.
I watched this video solely for Jak's reaction to the FPS Tiki battle

One of my favorite action sport game is agressive inline because it had the best progression, it’s similar to thps 4 but the challenges are more creative and you don’t need to speak to npc’s. I just wish it was on a skateboard with the perfect thps controls
When are you going to review Jet set radio
This is just a fine game.
I wasn't subscribed last year for Hawktober.. I didn't know it was 1 video every day for a week! Im really glad I subscribed now! 😃
Yes it's weekly special, cheers! 😁
@@SquareEyedJak Im so glad i found your channel about 2 months ago! Thanks for it all! ❤😃
I’m in consideration.
Edit: Nevermind, I’m in
My god!! This game is so disappointing!
The soundtrack is boring, the levels have a terrible game design and i never realized that fps bossfight because i never ended this game haha
At the 8:30 mark, I never knew that. Looks like I made certain grinding challenges and gaps way harder on myself. Thanks for teaching me something new! Oh and do you know if anything from this game got into american wasteland? Seeing how that also had bikes in it I could see Activision recycling anything they could.
spoiler alert *ksps does*
12:20 Fun fact, I once had a dream where I was playing FIFA 2004 and when I won a match against Manchester City (me) and Aston Villa, the Villa players transformed into aliens and the game turned into a twin stick shooter like Dead Ops Arcade from Black Ops.
I didn’t even know this existed lmao
Him loosing his shit to the first person shooting part got him a new sub 😂😂😂
9:01 OH GOD I'M GETTING THPS 5 'NAM FLASHBACKS
7:47 Are you an incel? just kidding XD
Keep up the great work. I honestly wouldn't even watch skateboarding game videos if it wasn't for the reviewer himself being awesome.
This Hawktober keeps getting better! Thanks for continuing this great series Jak!
Just wanted to say as the world record holder for the speedrun on this piece of garbage that you releasing this video on my birthday feels poetic
I know it's not an O2 game but I feel that you'd do a phenomenal job reviewing Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX. I spent countless hours playing it with a friend and making fun of broken this game actually is.
i played it and it's not broken
@@frank627full4 But you can do a backflip off the ground with the best bike. Also try bouncing off the wall. The tricks you can do this way are amazing. Sometimes you can wallride like gravity doesn't exist. You can also do a single backflip and it counts as a triple backflip if you know how to pull it off.
@@FelixGameRoom I played the Maximum Remix one, and i didn't experienced that backflip thing
@@frank627full4 And I've yet to experience the Maximum Remix.
That boss fight made me go "WTF" out loud.
I think the best part of your reviews is seeing another person who likes all consoles and doesn't just stick to playstation or xbox or something
I mean if I have a choice for 3rd party titles, I go with the systems I always prefer (PS1, PS2 and 360) but the OG Xbox versions are usually way cheaper and included additional content.
@@SquareEyedJak that's true. I've also found that some xbox versions like gta san Andreas have better graphics or dont have that orange glare that ps2 had. OG xbox also had some really great exclusives like halo and fable.
The Xbox versions of THPS4 and the THUG games actually outputted in 720p.
Oy mate! Once again, greetings from Brazil! So nice watching this the day after watching your last vid (yesterday's), therefore getting the joke! (Dude, I may have drunk just a tad bit more than I should've, so sorry)
Now, down to 'binness. MATE, YOU'RE GETTING THINNER BY THE HOUR, WHAT THE ACTUAL MARVELLOUS HELL?
Yo, share that diet wit' yo' fans from South America's Down Under!
Move over Rayman 3 boss fight with a shooter section. We have another contender for genre and gameplay changes that people don't expect and don't want. XD
I’d say this game should get at least a 5/10 because some of the level design was good and it can be fun in multiplayer definitely the best 02 spin-off game
Love the twinsanity idol boss music 11:54
Absolutely had to do it!
Matt Hoffman 2 seems to resemble Dave Mirra 2 a lot, especially with the tiered system for challenges. I'd love to see you check out the Mirra series, theyre really janky games.
I didn't have this as a kid, I had the superior (at least in my mind) Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2, and trying to play this as an adult left me so disappointed. Rainbow did capture that feeling of momentum and fun with Splashdown: Rides Gone Wild, though, although the early 2000's artifacts that are left behind reach obnoxious levels
"Awkward and stiff, like everytime when a girl looks in my direction". Fucking lmao!
So not this time, but I bet we'll get a Kelly Slater Pro Surfing review next.
Edit 1: HAHA I KNEW IT!
You should review Dave Mirra FreeStyle BMX 1, Maximum Remix and 2 plus a comparison to the Mat Hoffman games when you can. Maybe even BMX XXX, the mature Freestyle BMX spin off.
I know it's not an O2 game but you should review Airblade. And also Aggressive Inline.
I always thought MHPB2 was the worst of the Activision O2 games. I never found it fun and its just boring. Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 came out almost 1 year before and imo that was a much better BMX game.
I think the ending is the only part of this game I can say is above board, I never finished this game as a kid it was too miserably awkward to beat more than a couple levels, so learning the end now makes me wish I would’ve just pushed thru the whole game… I wish more games had such shockingly switched up finales
Gonna be honest I reckon it was Hoffman's idea for the first person ending, it is a bit of a pissa gotta give it to him to be like fuck it this would be sick hahahahah
not gonna lie i had MHP BMX 2 and MHP BMX on the PS1 both great games although i do prefer the original as it was more nostalgic to me and I cannot forget Pennywise - Wouldn't it be nice badman tune for the PS1.
I bought my mums old OG Xbox, and this game was included among others, and being a Tony Hawk's game fan I was quite excited to give it a go, but two levels in and its been sat on the shelf unplayed since, it's not even mediocre.
I feel like you missed the point with the videos and theme of this game, the game is based on a real road trip these guys all took, each level is a location they visited, and the videos you unlock show you what they got up to in that city or town. I actually always really liked this aspect of the game as it gave a lot more context to where you were going and what you were doing, as opposed to the early Pro Skater games where you bounce around from level to level without much explanation. The intro to the game was always one of my favourites as a kid too, Iggy Pop's "The Passenger" really sets the tone of the game, which is all about taking a cross country road trip with the boys. I actually went on a skatepark tour with my friends as a kid, driving across the state visiting all the different parks and I remember thinking about this game a lot during that trip!
Hey jak these serie's is awesome but i want to see a review of wrestling games and you did a video legend's of wrestelmania and you use wrestling games theme music so please do a series talking about wrestling games please?
First MHPB? Oh man, I love this game, but second one is pure frustration and I'm glad I didn't finish it... twice.
It wasn't Matt hoffman pro bmx 2 I played, it turns out was Dave Mirrah Freestyle BMX 2 that I really enjoyed as a kid.
The only really great games on Activision O2 brand are the Wakeboarding Unleashed ones (GBA version included).
